I thought the thought but didn’t have the cojones to say it.

I’m looking at preparation, attitude, effort, and in-game focus.
Show me that, be dialed in, and win or lose, the rest will follow.

    Can I getta Amen?

whiteshoes67, FSU’s great TE O’Leary did not have a catch in the game. Hard to say our LB’s and safeties weren’t doing the job since the TE is their responsibility. I was at the game, not watching on TV, and from my seat I couldn’t tell how the Nickel and corners were doing but I’d disagree with your assessment that the safeties and LBs were the weak link unless you consider the nickel back a safety.

For what it’s worth the FSU nickel back had a very hard time defending Bo Hines.

We wore down GSU and IDU and came from behind to win. FSU wore our OL down and came from behind to win. Our starting left guard was out with a virus. Our OL played without the benefit of substitution the entire time we had the ball — 91 snaps.

It’s My Not So Humble Opinion that Doeren’s philosophy is to build a base 4-2-5 defense that is fundamentally sound. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about what fundamentals of the 4-2-5 defense are to know where we stand, however, until in Doeren’s opinion we are playing fundamentally sound defense, I don’t expect to see anything exotic. Even if it might result in an advantage for us. I believe Doeren is in it for the long haul, not short term gains. I am putting my trust in him, his philosophy (whatever it is) and our assistant coaches.

Most of the comments I read are concerned with immediate results — 3rd and 4th down results, running outside instead of blocking for up the middle gains. Fortunately our offense with Jacoby Bissett, Shadrach Thornton, Bo Hines, the OL, etc., is very fundamentally sound and we are starting to see the more complete offensive package. Hopefully, soon our defense will shape up as well. We shall see. Until then I’ll just do what the rest of us do — grab the rearview mirror, look at the past and try to steer this vehicle through the conference schedule. 😉

    Good answers, primacyone.

I was concerned about the noise until I thought about it some. We’ve been practicing with loud music, etc., all week. Has Clemson’s defense been practicing with crowd noise? With our shifting and motion will Clemson hear its own defensive signals and calls? Let the crowd noise work against them more so than us.

“We were tired and weak at the end of the game last week.” True. Our guys played without substitutions, 91 plays I think it was. It was the best call we could make last week. Thuney will be out again this week so unless the coaches have figured out a way to rotate at least one lineman in to give them some break, we will have to do it again.

I have a question of my own. When is the last time NC State’s OL an asset instead of a detriment?

In the first quarter we seemed to be in Jameis’ face early and often, but as the game wore on, we just couldn’t get there.

Doeren complained about “invisible holding”. Holding is one way of keeping the DL form getting to your QB. 😉

I like the way you ask questions regarding complicated situations instead of having immediate answers. More often than not, questions are more valuable in solving complex problems than answers. Questions open up possibilities. Answers close down possibilities. Without new possibilities we are stuck with old answers. And if the problems were simple, they would be solved by Grad Asst’s.

switching to the 4-2-5 has left us with one less linebacker to blitz with, which may be the reason we aren’t seeing more exotic blitzes on third down situations.

Switching to the 4-2-5 was to provide a better defense to combat the spread offenses that are proliferating in college football. When we have the athletes with speed and size to do “press coverage” with our corners and maybe our Nickel, we will see the 4-2-5 as it is intended to function. Meanwhile we are having to accommodate less swift DBs. I don’t know what we are doing to compensate for the needed speed, but I’m sure it’s difficult to do.

    “There’s stuff I know and I know there’s stuff I don’t know.
    Then there’s stuff I don’t know that I don’t know.
So as I learn what I don’t know I add that knowledge to what I do know.
Yet the more I know, I’m aware that there is more that I don’t know.
No matter how much I learn, The stuff I know that I don’t know seems inexhaustible.
I’ve deduce that what I don’t know that I don’t know is infinite.”

This is how it is installing a new defensive set — for the players and coaches. The leaders stay ahead of the herd and the followers never catch up.

Why don’t we let the straw man rest in peace.

I’m for that, VaWolf82. While we’re at it, let’s let gratuitous swipes at the Pack rest with the straw man.

Unfortunately, in order to have any chance to win this year, our guys will HAVE to average 40 pts/game.

That’s a valid opinion, (Okay so far, Gowolves?) not that I share it. 😉

You do seem quick to jump on some people’s opinion rather harshly.

Gowolves, You are right and I hate it when I do that. Apologies to whiteshoes67 and any others I’ve been harsh with. Unfortunately it likely won’t be the last time. ;-(

Quick, without looking it up, when was the last time State scored 40+ points 4 games in a row? (Yes, this is a trick question.)

Since one of those 4 was ranked #1 in the coaches’ poll, we don’t have to devalue that accomplishment with “cupcake” conversation. Unless of course you are that kind of person and feel the need.

Most of us, myself included, thought it would end last weekend. Will this weekend end the streak? Is Brissett as good as the Clemson freshman QB? What would you do to negate our lack of speed in the back?

We simply have too many times where we’re in a position to get off the field, and we don’t. I’m not talking 3rd and short, but whether it’s 3rd and 5 or 3rd and 15, we struggle to get off the field. In those scenarios, we need to dig a little deeper in the bag of tricks. Not buying the blame on youth and inexperience.

We should fire coach Doeren because he doesn’t know that all we have to do is “dig a little deeper in our bag of tricks” and our 3rd down problems will be solved.

You learn something new everyday. All this time I thought it was strength, technique and tackling. Come to find out it’s just a bag of tricks.”

    Perhaps I shouldn’t use the phrase NC State S@$t;

Not directing this at you, triadwolf and I assert that the phrase, NC State Sh*t is all too often said in some whiney-assed, poor-us, we catch all the crap kind of way.

Doeren said he came here to build a top 25 caliber program. Part of this building includes a big boy fan base IMNSHO. Sh*t happens and it happens to everyone sooner or later. Part of having a top 25 caliber program is having the depth to overcome anything including multiple hits on one position like we took at LB this fall.

Pretty sure that was related to crappy S & C.

This is calling a spade a spade. Find out what’s wrong and correct it.

All too often teams that lose a tough game that means a lot to them like Saturday, don’t recover and lose the next game. No matter what happens, it will be the law of sports or lack of preparation or being out coached or some other big boy reason. It won’t be NC State Sh*t.

Again triadwolf, not directed at you or anyone in particular.

You know Florida State wouldn’t fake an injury. They might claim a catch of a ball that hit the ground OR they might stretch the ball out to get a first down after they were down OR they might try to take the ball away from the opponent in a pile up OR they might steal crab legs OR they might sexually assault a woman, but do something as onerous as faking an injury to slow down a runaway offense and maybe get a timeout to enable the coaches to coach them up. But you know they wouldn’t ever, ever fake an injury, now would they, Jimbo? “I know nothing about any injury faking. All 11 of those boys were injured or thought they were.”

Scan the State sideline. there is a number 17 with the name, Lacca, his back with a number 12 on his shoulder. Number 12, Lacy, is a couple of feet away, Further to the right there are 2 Hakim Joneses standing about 3 feet apart. All this was very helpful explaining to my wife the blonde next to me. Well, it could have been if there was one there, couldn’t it?

I just don’t see teams holding us below 30 unless NC State S#%@ creeps up and bites us square in the A$$.

Can we grow up and put our big-boy pants on? That wasn’t “FSU S#%@” that put 24 points on them in the 1st Qtr. That was Jacoby Brissett and friends. When it happens to us, it won’t be NC State S#%@ either. Sorry if this offends you but this “Poor us, we have NC State S#%@ happen” has about run its course. Let’s leave it with the Carowhiners.

IMNSHO all 5 OL playing every offensive snap was biggest factor in 4th quarter fade. Plus it was our best O lineman, Joe Thuney, who didn’t play (due to illness.) Barr played LG and he isn’t near as mobile as Thuney. Doeren would never throw them or any player under the bus but IMO this is one of the biggest factors in our loss.

On the other side of the coin, our top six OL are doing very well — much better than I expected. Maybe our recruiting will reap some ready to play OL and not so many ‘projects.’ Regardless, Veldtkamp and his staff will continue to develop some bodies with who we have.

I’m not convinced zone coverage is suited for this group.

I’m not sure we are in zone coverage but if we are it’s because we can’t hang with FSU’s receivers in man coverage.

if it were me, I’d risk giving up big ones–we already give up plenty of 20+ plays–and put our big corners up close, bump, and bring more pressure. Force them the QB’s to make quick decisions.

Call Doeren. I’m sure he would like to know how to bring more pressure and how you would force Winston to make quick decisions.

You are right about one thing for sure. We would give up big ones.

If it is truly to give Bissett some time to rest I will watch the next games to see if it is run right after he scrambles and is tired. That would make sense and explain why we ran it so much. But if that is the case why did they go away from it in the second half? I would think that is when Bissett was the most fatigued.

Rick, think of it like a runner who paces himself early in a race so that he has energy to go full out at the end. The set is not necessarily used to rest Brissett after he scrambles.

The read option gave USF fits. It is a different preparation than the for the pistol or what whatever we are running with Brissett. I like what fosse said, “I know enough to know I don’t know enough to understand.” Or something like that. Most of us don’t know enough to know we don’t know enough to understand what the heck Canada is doing.

We have scored 40+ points in 4 games in a row. It’s time to stop nitpicking our OC.

Yes, Bo Hines is definitely a top rookie. True freshman Tony Adams played 91 snaps at right guard. I’d like to see how he graded out. (All 5 interior linemen played every snap on offense. WOW!)

Jerod Fernandez is already a very good middle LB. We should have quite a fight for who starts next year when Salahuddin gets back and Ty Linton joins the mix. Freshman Coult Culler is red shirting and Bradley Chubb will be in that mix also. Somebody is moving to the outside where Noel and Pitman are graduating after this year.

I just don’t think we play to strengths.

We graduated a few seniors and added a few freshmen to last year’s 3-9 team. Just what strengths are there that you don’t think we play to?
