This will never happen but it’s a fun idea to play with.

Here’s a plan that should produce a season of good football games and an undisputed National Champion.
Split the FBS (128 teams) into 2 Divisions – Majors and Mid-Majors (64 teams each)
Each Division has 4 conferences of 16 teams
Divide the conferences into 8 team divisions.
Each team plays 1 inter-conference game – first game of the season.
Each team plays 3 crossover games – next 3 games — don’t count in conference championship determination. This replaces OOC cupcake games.
The 8 Division teams play each other to determine Div. Champ.
Div. Ch. Play for the Conference Championship (12th game)
Bye week for teams playing on Thursday night and their next opp has bye week also.
Season starts 1st Sat. in Sept. and completes last Sat. in Nov.
Major Conference Champions play Semis 2nd Saturday in Dec and Finals 4th or 5th Saturday depending on how Christmas falls. (14, 15)
Mid-Majors play 1st and 3rd Saturdays in Dec.

Scheduling is the easy part. Getting conference affiliations that satisfy everybody is next to impossible.

It’s a good read. Give it a shot if you have a little time.

Thanks! I did and I agree whole heartedly — it is a good read. Makes me appreciate what opportunity I had even if I didn’t take nearly full advantage of it.

Doeren and our staff getting to know and being known by the Florida ‘country boy’ coaches is a very cool thing. They’ll get tips from coaches who have players who can play in Div. I, boys like Anton Bolden. Coach Doeren is just what these kind of young men need, family away from home with teammates who will keep the on the straight and narrow. IMO What he did for Shad after Shad screwed up is just the kind of thing many young men need.

What our team needs more than anything is a bunch of ‘rabbit catchers.’

State didn’t score a plus with the opponent, as anytime you play a team outside the power five, unless maybe it’s Boise State, you won’t elevate your program much by winning, but if you lose, you’ll be seen as being on the mid-major level. Thank John Swofford for the Notre Dame “addition” that cost the ACC a tier one spot.

State didn’t score a plus with the opponent… can’t argue with that. But the rest is merely valid opinion. Without looking, who did UCF play in the Fiesta Bowl. Did UCF’s opponent suffer the indignity of losing to a non Power 5 opponent thereby being seen as being on the mid-major level? Baylor doesn’t think so and neither does anybody who knows football see them that way.

Nice to criticize Swoffard for any reason — true or false — but ND didn’t cost us a tier 1 spot, the shenanigans of the committee did that. Until the committee maneuvered the rankings to give the BIG another spot, we were set just fine. Furthermore IMO the ACC getting to play ND 5 times a year is worth an occasional tier 1 spot. While it could have been, it just wasn’t this year.

Great post — just what I hoped would happen when I originated this thread. Perhaps when the Bowl selection calms down other folks will join in with their ideas and opinions.

my personal suggestion is to avoid saying ‘thugball’ though – even though a ‘thug’ can be any race, unfortunately the PC crowd has made it so that the term is connotative of a certain race

You are so right. I’m an old guy and I was thinking “thugs” like enforcers for organized crime. I have to laugh when I think about the PC crowd accusing someone else when it is they who are bringing race into it.

I looked and I can’t edit the post to take “thug” out. Maybe a mod will see this and turn my ‘edit’ on and I’ll fix it.

Just a little correction from a noob. Mr. Dylan sang,” It don’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.” (not weathervane).

Ashe, thanks for the correction. The older I get the less accurately I hear the old songs in my head. You’d think I’d know better. I was working for Columbia Record Distributers in the Boston branch when Mr. Dylan’s first LP came out. A secretary and myself put on the demo at lunch the day it came in. We were going to just listen to see what kind of music “Bob Dylan” was. When the demo ended and lunch was over, Jo and I looked at each other and I said, “I don’t know what this is but we’ve got something here.” No original stuff IIRC but what an album.

I learned a valuable lesson with that record. Never let the boss make a fool of himself. The Branch Manager told us, “Don’t buy any of that sh!t.” He also was the guy who told me, never let the boss make a fool of himself. He did not like being reminded of that.

Unfortunally, the vast majority of optimistic predictions about State have turned out to be horribly wrong.

But we aren’t talking about “the vast majority of optimistic predictions about State.” The context for this conversation is the accusation Rick made about foose judging this football team based on one game, the Holes beat-down. In context foose’s assessment of this State football team isn’t wishful thinking or optimistic prediction.

My remarks are in no way are a lack of appreciation for or meant to lesson the value of WV Wolf’s work producing the stats for this thread. As Doeren’s program matures in the next several years, these stats will take on a very meaningful role in evaluating the program. To think that stats are meaningful as significant measurement of a program in transition is just damn foolishness.

    Greywolf

Conclusions with meaningful data are always going to be more accurate that wishful thinking or premature predictions.

Conclusions with meaningful data? Oh, I see. 20/20 hindsight. And what the heck is a “premature prediction?”

VaWolf82, I have no problem with those who analyze data to draw conclusions but to knock those who analyze and evaluate football progress or improvement without having the results to guide them and accuse them of wishful thinking is over the top and condescending IMNSHO.

If one looked at the meaningful data, one would have concluded that Wake would stop the Pack and the Holes would roll on the Pack D. I know Mr. DOG said otherwise and I think I recall foose doing the same.

Evaluating what is happening as it is happening by looking in places other than the stat sheets is far more difficult than using 20/20 hindsight, i.e., meaningful data. Just because you don’t understand how to do that, please don’t make those wrong who do.

I just read the other posts that followed Rick’s to which I responded. Apologies for the redundancy.

Glad you cleared that up. I thought for a moment you were paraphrasing my interpretation of what you weren’t saying. Does that make any sense? I didn’t think so. 😉

This Doeren guy really is one of us, isn’t he? He even looks like one of us. Is it any wonder he’s doing so well with the HS coaches out in the boonies? We’ll always lose some of the recruits who grew up dreaming of playing for the Holes. And although he would never say it there will be some 4 and 5 star players who don’t fit in with the staff and the team.

This has been a good thread. I always enjoy comparing notes with you, DOG, bill and others. BTW where’s Yogi? He needs to get his ass back here and chime in. You just have to apply the Latin slogan: Illegitimous non Carborundum

Correction – we are ranked 45 nationally.

It was 43rd when you wrote it. Somebody got another commitment. I don’t understand all I know about the recruiting rankings but I expect we will be more than respectable when a couple of our 2 stars upgrade to 3s and we land Hines, and Hughes and a few others.

Just what IS the number of available scholarships for 2015?

I’m afraid that a non-motivated Georgia team is enough to easily roll us. They have a huge advantage in the trenches.

Ryebread. that’s alright. We fear what we fear. There are some who feared the Holes would roll us. Didn’t happen.

Regardless, we’ll bowl where we bowl and face who we face. I just hope we play the best that we possibly can.

Now that’s manning up. My thought? Anybody we play better bring their “A” game. Doeren will look’em in the eye and tell’um, “Gitcha best holt.”

Oh my that seems like a bit of an over reaction to one game.

Whatever gave you the idea foose was talking about one game? He’s not alone either. Mr. DOG has weighed in with much the same opinion only expressed in DOGese which I sometimes don’t quite understand.

Doeren is putting something together that’s going to be pretty special. foose, DOG and a few others are like scientist looking at a microscope. They see and understand stuff that we see as just stuff wiggling around — clueless about what we are looking at. They saw it long before it became visible to me and a few others.

The W/L is a weathervane and like Mr. Dylan says, “You don’t need a weathervane to know which way the winds a blowing.”

I do have a thought that’s a slight variation on foose’s concern about keeping the cook in our kitchen. How long can we keep the assistant chefs and the food preparers?

That’s kind of why I want us to bowl against a fringe top 25 team, which is my definition of “bowling down.” I’m comparing that with the Belk Bowl/Georgia situation.

You may be the only person I know who considers playing a top 25, any top 25 team, “bowling down.” You can trust the bowl people to do their dead level best to match up teams in their bowls to have a good, competitive game. I don’t know what Georgia has but if we get paired up with them, I say ‘bring it on, Dogs.’ We’ll find out just how much Doeren and staff have developed this bunch of freshmen we depend so heavily on.

    Larry Beightol, boys.
    BEIGHTOL. Pride of Catawba.
Coach Beck was one whale of an OL guru. 20+ years in the NFL.

Alright already. So I was using the phonetic spelling. Don’t I get any points, MR. DOG? 😉

DOG, Do you remember who the OL coach was with Edwards?

    Greywolf
    Participant

I don’t remember, if I ever knew, who coached the OL anchored by Bill Yoast and Rick

Yoest 70-73. Earl in ’70. Al Michaels ’71 and Holtz (Bechtal) 72 and 73. The best coaching the best!

In the days when you could attend practice I remember watching Bechtal on Friday line up his OL’s and go through the play book, play by play, defense by defense with the line taking their first step as he called out the defensive alignments. You could see anybody who took the wrong first step. What an efficient way to check to see if the line knew it’s assignments. Not many took a misstep and those who did heard about it. Taking the correct first step is half the success in blocking a play.

(or just the best we’ve had in a very long time… )

My apologies to Robbie Caldwell and Larry Bechtal. For you Young’uns Bechtal coached for Holtz and eventually in the pros. I may have Caldwell mixed up with someone else who coached OL for Earl Edwards.

Thanks Bill for remembering some of the guys from the most successful football ever played at State.

Rye, We’ve had some decent and respectful conversations and I hope you won’t be offended if I take issue with a few things.

graywolf: I love your excitement and all, but I am not so sure that we improved so drastically as much as we hit the easy part of the schedule. If you pair WF’s defense with UNC’s offense and special teams, then you might have actually had a legitimate Power 5 conference team. That pairing probably would have beaten us, like anyone else with a pulse did all year.

First, what foose said. Second, FSU, Clemson, Louisville and GT are a bit more than teams with a pulse. It could be argued that BC was just another team with a pulse but they did beat USC and do have one of the better running QBs in the country, a very senior OL and a very good coach.

I don’t know if you were just trying to make a point but you are way off the mark calling FSU, Clemson, Louisville and GT teams with a pulse. We got spanked pretty good by CU and GT but not FSU and L’ville. Pure speculation but we likely would have taken L’ville had we run Jacoby like we did vs. EweNC. Why didn’t we? Again pure speculation but I don’t think Doeren wanted the Holes to know about that little wrinkle. IOW he traded an L for a W over the Holes. The man is one of us. He don’t like the Holes anymore than we do.

I’m really hoping we bowl “down” against a team we can look good against.

You may feel that way but if our team and coaches feel that way, I’m outta here. We will never amount to a damn thing. But not to worry. Doeren is not that kind of man. And we likely will not get a top 25 team like any of the above mentioned FSU, Clemson, Louisville and GT.

harder to get a read on with respect to intent.

When a team lines up on the 2 yard line with 2 tight ends, an H back, a FB, a RB and a QB under center, it’s not hard to get a read on intent either.

That Wildcat was atrocious and was a wasted down at best.

Was it any more wasted than the plunges we tried with Shad when we were at the 2 yard line? My comment was somewhat in jest for the reasons below. When we ran it with Shirreff we picked up 3, 4 and 5 yards nearly every time. It wasn’t working as well with the personnel we have in 2014 and we stopped using it. It wasn’t worth the practice time to correct it. Prepare yourself for more frustration as we will likely see it again in 2015. It does give the opps something else to prepare for and it is a +1 set up.

I hope the “in-over-his-head” quips never stop.

Pak, I think he was relatively new to being a head coach and as such made some mistakes in his role as head coach. That’s different from being in over his head.

I think what we all failed to see is that his assistants were not new and were not “in-over-their-heads” in performing their duties. I only hope and pray we can keep this staff around for a long time. Staff continuity is important.

Is there a team in the ACC that has progressed the way this team has? Frankly, I’m amazed the level of play of both our offense and our defense considering where they started from.

Our OL coach has gotta be one of the best. Our center, who had taken every snap of the season, goes out in the first quarter and a true freshman guard moves over to center and the offense doesn’t miss a beat. Have to admit we looked pretty good for a mediocre offense. Must have been getting rid of the Wildcat.

No way it will happen but I’d love to play Duke to see how our in-over-his-head coach does against Dukes COY.

Ya have to wonder how our O will look in 2015 with Jacoby free to run. Got a good feeling about our D as well.

One stat I hate to hear an announcer say is “NC State has never beaten XYZ on their field and the last time they played was 30 years ago.

    Mike wrote this.
WTF? I quoted Mike, not 89 or whoever.

(sarcasm alert) Aw come on Mike. Give the announcers a break. They study “preparing” for the game. Stats is all they know and they have to talk about something. The poor announcers never saw it coming Saturday. All they could do was mumble something about the Holes coming back vs. Pittsburg. They kept showing pictures of “pretty boy” #10 and him running back and forth, lost, on defense.

Mean time Rodney Noel was looking like an AA making tackles and ringing bells. Only say Marsqeasy slow down at the sideline one time. Hux may not be much of a DC but he can coach some LBers. Caldwell last year and Noel this year came out of nowhere. We are going to have an abundance of LBs in 2015. Some of those boys are going to be ‘dangerous’ on special teams, trying to make a name for themselves and get noticed.

So Mike, thanks for being my entre into talking some football. Talking about us struggling against second and 3rd tier BB teams ain’t my cup of tea. I’ll admit seeing the Holes lose to the likes of Butler is pretty cool.

I like this but have no idea what it means to us, us being our team and the staff. Hopefully other 4* recruits will feel more inclined to commit to State, i.e., have other 4* recruits to play with — fulfilling the future Doeren is creating in his recruiting.

I don’t understand why anyone would want their team to play in a Tier 2 bowl instead of a Tier 1 bowl.

I’m with you on this. I have some idea as to why but I promised myself I would stop being such a smart-ass so I’ll not say.

Link to complete Pack/Holes game. I’ve watched it 3 1/2 times and I swear it gets better every time. I don’t get upset at stupid penalties or missed tackles or anything. I just watch the Pack kick the living sh!t out of the Holes.

Question: what is that on the Holes’ helmets? Maybe Wolfpack foot prints?

In my late 60’s I stopped trying to improve my drive and did things to stop thinking.

My distance went from 225-250 to 275-300. I’ll admit I changed my swing to inside out and let myself just swing. My friends didn’t like me all of a sudden out driving them 50 yard and keeping it in the short grass.

I didn’t want to put this in the post above as it wasn’t the point.

Can a QB really improve his deep ball??? It is like me trying to improve my drive after years and years of effort and lessons. Have gotten better but still inconsistent.

This is what can be expected when improvement is the goal. I know about trying to ‘improve’ my drive. After years of effort and a few lessons not only was I still inconsistent but my distance blew (which is past tense for suck.) In my late 60’s I stopped trying to improve my drive and did things to stop thinking.

Ever just tossed a balled up piece of paper at a trash can? No thought, no aim, just threw it? Yeah? Me too. damn thing goes right in. Try it again and I’m lucky to hit the floor with it. When conscious thought gets in the way of hand/eye coordination, undesirable stuff happens.

I said all that to say this: my guess is that Jacoby is trying too hard on the deep ball or is trying to put in some particular correction and like the second toss at the trash can, his mind is getting in the way of his hand/eye coordination. Usually this is corrected by repetition until thinking stops and instincts take over. During the season may not be the best time to try correction by repetition and elimination of thinking is easier said than done. And as Mr. DOG indicated earlier, receivers going after the ball would correct the problem.

Hmmm. I don’t understand all I know about what I just wrote.

Jacoby! I can see why Doeren was so high on him now.. No offense intended to Hines or our other WRs but if Jacoby had just one receiver like Clemson and FSU seems to be blessed with every year, he would be All Conference and we would be looking at 9 or 10 wins. There aren’t many of those guys around so we’ll just have to run it down their throats in the near future. 😉

    Moving on..

It will be nice to see how this year’s recruiting class shapes up, and how well DD develops talent from last year’s class but I’m hopeful for the future.

If the development of our Red Shirts is anywhere near the development of some of the active roster, we will tough to deal with in the future. I think our recruiters are looking for athletic ability as much as size in the OL. Of course both is ideal. We have many big OL who can’t move their feet which has them playing on PAT and FG teams, but not regular players.
