Last night my wife told me to “get that silly grin off your face” so I fired up SFN and read about NC State basketball. It worked. The grin is gone and she also told me if I stop reading about that damn Doeren and his recruiting, maybe it will stay gone.

UVA is a veteran team, and we are made up of a bunch of freshmen and sophmores.

When do you suppose Gott found out he had a “team made up of a bunch of sophomores” — opening day of practice?

Something is distracting Gottfried. New day, same sh!t.

Thanks for all you do now and during the season.

Maybe one of the code jockeys on this list could set you up with something where you could list early enrollees at the top and list commits on the bottom. When a LOI comes in, move that commit to the top list. With a table set up ahead, it should go pretty smoothly for you and for those of us who like it neat and tidy. 🙂

There’s a world of first class accomplishment occurring at North Carolina State University. Thank you for posting NC State University: A year in review.

After watching “A year in review,’ at the end I clicked on highlights of NC State’s 35-7 ass-whipping of EweNC. Does anyone know of a rehab center that treats over-dosing on those highlights? I mean watching for an eye-opener first thing in the morning, a pick-me-up mid-morning and a couple of times with lunch, a quick view or two in the afternoon and a couple of times during dinner followed by an after dinner viewing is OK but this damn watch, watch, watch all day long has got to stop.

What’s this concern about red shirting? If Sessoms works hard and is the better returner, he will play. Doeren makes that promise.

Grey – “disgusted” fits for Clemson game, probably an exaggeration for BC.

Chops, If you and I sat down and had a conversation, I’d bet that we were referencing a different connotation of the word, “disgusted.” And thanks for the unasked for retraction of “disgusted” on the BC game. Peace!

Also, try to stay on topic – each author takes time out of their schedule to try and publish content that is worthy of news and discussion. Respect it.

Unfortunately after about 6 posts on topic most everything to say on the topic has been said. Meanwhile the topic causes thoughts along similar lines and off we go. If the topic is football related, don’t be surprised to see us branching off on similar topics.

I went all in after south Florida and was then disgusted by what I saw vs. Clemson and BC.

I hope “disgusted” was simply a bad IMO choice of words. I was disappointed by our play vs. Clemson, but certainly not disgusted. Had I not been so upset by how Clemson played the first half, I would have been relatively pleased by our effort in the second half. Clemson didn’t pull its starters until the fourth quarter had started. What there was to see was once again our players did not quit but played harder and with heart in the face of being blown off the field in the first half. Players and coaches not quitting is a very positive sign for the coaching staff.

On a more general note, I would be cautious about evaluating what I saw these coaches do. What we think they are doing may not be what they are actually doing. What one does in a teaching mode may not be what one would do in a playing mode. Fans can be painfully short-sighted. We only see the moment. Our defense was in a teaching mode in the first half or so of 2014. We were building a defense and we chose to teach basic defense before we installed blitz packages and that neat little trick where Pharaoh McKever dropped back into coverage. You can’t do that stuff if your base assignments aren’t second nature. A new defense that is being played with the players thinking about what they are supposed to be doing is not the same as the same defense with players flying around unrestrained by having to think. Rodman Noel’s second half of 2014 was All America type play while the first half was tentative.

IMNSHO we would all enjoy Doeren and the Wolfpack a whole lot more if we tried to understand what the coaches were doing or trying to do, instead of second guessing EVERYTHING they do by comparing it to what WE would have done.

Note to foose and Yogi: don’t waste your time with some POS troll — although I will admit I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. 😉 Glad to see you two guys back and Mr. DOG commenting about football.

We had LSU and Tenn on our schedule and they both cancelled out leaving us in a lurch. I wasn’t aware of just how much ignorance existed regarding scheduling football until I read threads like this. Schedules are made years ahead. Buys out such as we experienced create pressures to schedule teams we might not want to schedule and to schedule home and home when we don’t want that either.

The 13s — one is leaving or so he has announced several times and one wouldn’t go to games if the best seats were free — will not be missed.

You want a top 15 program? It starts with good, loyal fans, not with winning conference championships and attracting football snobs who can only be bothered to watch top ranked teams. The really good programs sell out every game regardless of the opposition. Hell, Alabama sells out it’s Spring Game.

So 13OT now that you are leaving, is this your last obituary? BTW where were your season tickets? I might want to try to pick them up if they are better than the ones I have.

I mean, other than the 1st half against CFU and FSU (which is debatable how good they are on def), did we really run a good offense on a good defensive team?

I read various comments of this ilk regularly on this and other boards. Canada coordinated an offense that did not have one single All Conference player on it. I doubt that Butch Jones was only considering Canada’s work here at NC State. Canada has a body of work to be considered — Indiana, Wisconsin, No. Illinois as well as NC State.

After Biliema left and Canada was free to run his offense, Wisconsin hung 70 points on Nebraska in the BIG CC game. Only a fool would judge the ability of a coordinator’s work with a mediocre talented team. Folks a team that did not win a conference game the previous year and went 3-9 over all is talent wise a mediocre team.

How did Canada do as a coordinator? His RB and their coach did very well and got better as the season progressed. The OL was effective and progressed. When injuries occurred second teamers stepped up and got the job done. TEs, HBs and FBs did a good job. Of the 3 TEs that played regularly only one caught a pass all year. The other two were blocking for the big yards that we were picking up at the end of the year. Our freshman HB had a sick yards per carry and caught the ball quite well.

Our WRs were not so good. Hines was very good but the others? They dropped a lot of balls. DAVE Doeren was credited with our WR coach leaving. In good coaching structure that move was probably shared with Canada. Canada is our QB coach and he coached Brissett out of a bad mid-season slump.

So don’t give me this “did we really run a good offense on a good defensive team?” Canada developed a fairly good offense out of a rather mediocre bunch of lackluster performers.

Anybody not excited about 2015? I can hardly wait. I have no idea who will be the tackles in our rebuilt OL, but I have confidence that we will be just fine. Let’s see what your new DC has got Carowhiner.

Matt Canada was the OC for an offense that won 8 games without one single all conference player. Perhaps Butch Jones sees something we of SFN don’t see. Instead of inconsistent Jones may see extraordinary results with the talent he is amassing at Tennessee.

I don’t worry so much about Canada possibly leaving as I do his taking Coach U and/or Coach Kitchings with him. I’m reasonably sure that Coach D has a short list of OCs who would love to come to NC State for the money Canada would be leaving. And there are several promotion possibilities.

??? McClendon is built like a QB, not a RB. He also apparently throws like one. Dude is likely the future for us at QB. I don’t understand this discussion at all.

OT13 had a “senior moment” and was maybe thinking about TA McC from the past.

Most encouraging news I have heard in 20 years. Ifwhen Doren keeps this recruiting like this we will see the results on the field. IfAfter we become relevant in the football world let’s don’t repeat the past and let Doren leave for another school because of our lack of salary—PAY HIM AND HIS STAFF FOR POSITIVE RESULTS. Money isn’t the only issue but remember Holtz and Rein—people who left for whatever reason but I suspect money and lack of commitment from the top were part of the reasoning for their departure. We then proceded to hire a bunch of faillures (excluding Sheridan). Again—lets don’t repeat the past experience.

Let’s do repeat the past as we did with Earl Edwards and keep Doeren until he retires here in North Carolina.

The circumstances are entirely different now than when Holtz and Rein were here. We had a tightwad for an AD who was more interested in keeping the department in the black than keeping good coaches. (He let Sloan get away because he low-balled him with a salary offer.) We also did not have the Chancellor support then we do now. I’m not going to get into how Willis could be an asshole with the coaches, more interested in winning pissing contests than having great relationships with his coaches. This is all my opinion regarding WC and I’m sure there are those that disagree.

Debbie Yow is an advocate for paying the coaches well. Our OC and DC make good money and our assistant coaches do as well. We aren’t paying guru prices but we are very competitive. Keeping our assistants is a bigger concern of mine than keeping Doeren. DY will do what it takes to keep DD.

I understand what you are trying to communicate, I just want to head off any notion that these times and conditions are anything like the days of Willis Casey and the Chancellors who headed NC State University then. We should all give thanks for Randy Woodson, Debbie Yow, Dave Doeren and the football staff, both on-the-field coaches and the support staff as well as the S&C coaches headed by Veldkamp. Football is a team sport and a top 10 football program is a team effort.

With this team we may be out spent but we will not be out worked.

While I agree with your point, there was this guy named Russell Wilson who was pretty good with both his feet and his arm. Just saying.

(blush) Of course. It’s too bad he had to play with an Old Testament OC. Can you imagine RW playing for this coaching staff?

The 1967 team was a big and bruising team that was built on defense. It’s now looking like our running game is about to get better, especially if our O-line improves some.

I still think we need a passing QB instead of trying to plug in a running back at this position, especially since we’re getting a 4-star RB in McClendon. I think Brissett has done as well as he can at QB, but I certainly hope Doeren will look for a good HS prospect for our next QB instead of us taking yet another transfer.

There are still some possibilities out there, as Michigan just yesterday grabbed a 6-7 pocket-passer who had been committed to Texas but will now go to UM instead.

I only brought up the ’67 Pack to point to what’s possible to the younger folk who can’t see NC State ever competing for the NC.

We haven’t had a QB like Brissett at State — one who could beat you with his arm and feet. 13OT, look again at McClendon. The word leaking out of the practices at State is this young man can really throw it. I’m glad to hear he’s an RB type QB as well.

That little QB at Clemson who can both run and throw — was the number one dual threat QB in his class. He can hurt you either way. DD wisely protected Brissett from injury. We should have enough talent at RB, FB and SB to take the heat off our QB — keep him from taking a pounding running the ball. Jacobi was smart while running the ball, taking the 10 to 20 yards the defense gave him before stepping out of bounds or hitting the ground before he was hit.

I hate to bring it up but we are likely to see the Wildcat again this fall. Too many really good RB’s not to. The average fan like myself has a limited imagination as to how to use all those backs but Matt Canada, Des Kitchings and George McDonald don’t. I’m trusting Coach U will have the OLine blocking and clearing the way for this stable of thoroughbreds we have at RB to all have opportunities to show why they are highly rated.

Not only does our coaching staff know recruiting, they know the details of coaching our boys up as well. And they will not be out worked.

To seem, rather than to be. You and Geno make a GREAT pair of douche bags.

Please, no need to insult douche bags. Besides, they need douche bags at EweNC with all the pussies they have on defense.

Does 24/7 seriously think Doeren is building a Playoff Contender? I don’t think I will consider staying home from Carter this fall because we aren’t playing Alabama. It’s a good thing we have an agreement pending with the SEC because not many good teams will want to play NC State.

Wanna see what’s possible for State? Look up the Wolfpack teams under Earl Edwards in the 60’s. We were one damn yard away from being #1 in the nation when we were stopped on 4th down at the 1 by Penn State at “Happy Valley.” I only bring this up to counter the “it can’t be done” crowd.

    Go Pack!!

JR Sweezy…I can’t really find anything good to say there.

Did you happen to notice who along with RW knocked the interceptor out of bounds on the 5 yard line preventing a TD — that would have put a nail in Seattle’s coffin? The stupid GB un-sportsman like conduct penalty helped but GB had to settle for another FG.

Regarding redshirting, I’d like to see our skill position players [4 & 5 star] enrolling early and ready to go their freshman year. Our lines be sufficiently deep so as to be able to red-shirt nearly every incoming OL and DL with the occasional freak coming in every other year or so who doesn’t need maturing.

I occasionally find myself thinking in terms of the “old” Wolfpack and thinking about being good enough (good enough, isn’t that the old thinking?) to redshirt a few players.

Since this is the Valdes-Scantling thread I’m going to give my point of view — an optimistic point of view. First things first. MVS played as many downs as any WR and more than most. Why was that? The boy could and did block. Failure to block has curtailed more than one skill-player’s PT or in some cases added to his PT. Bo Hines had very low PT compared to what his receiving skill would seem to warrant. Our run game did pick up and we got good blocking all the way around. It won’t just the OL. I don’t know if Hines could block or not but if I had to bet money, I’d go with his not being a good blocker.

So what’s up with MVS? He sounds like someone who is disappointed in himself, doesn’t want to leave but is doing so based on the past. He’s for sure, whether he means to or not, giving the coaches time to talk him into staying. With a new WR coach coming in Ramos and others can all have a fresh start.

Not to be ‘too’ critical, but we might need someone to throw the long ball. Hope that is a point of emphasis this spring. At least overthrows aren’t picked off…

I love talking Wolfpack football and comparing points of view. With all due respects IMO our offense is not “long ball” oriented. With 2 new tackles to develop we don’t need to be running deep routes with Jacoby running for his life.

With players like Dayes, Thornton, Samuels, and Grinnage already on the roster and Gallaspy, Hines and maybe Frazier coming, offensively I expect the emphasis will be on getting the ball in the hands of playmakers in space and of course finding the ‘right’ combination of OL.

Oh, we’ll have a deep threat or 2 but that won’t be our emphasis IMO.

BTW has Mac been sighed yet? I sure hope DY works this out. 2 years of establishing NC State in FL, you can’t buy.
I say 2 years because that’s about Mac’s average stay with a team. Nothing wrong there, just fact.

I can see several scenarios that might turn out differently. We have to consider that Matt Canada might be leaving for an HC job especially if we are as successful as we could be. Mac fits right in with our offensive thinking and could be our OC in waiting although I don’t like that designation.

While it was just a passing thought a couple of years ago, we just might be in position to challenge for the big prize sooner than any of us thought. A lot closer to that in football than basketball.
