GreywolfParticipant
Did any of you notice our starting RT was out both games? How about our starting LG moving to RT to cover there and then got dinged up a bit? Just wondered. Nobody mentioned it in the lamenting about no running game.
Our atrocious DBs pitched a shutout in the second half.
If you load the box to stop the run, you are giving something away like the passing game.
dont ever change
If you mean become a cynical, smart-arsed, self-styled comedian like many on this board, I don’t intend to.
Don’t know how long you’ve been around but I doubt it was back when SFN was a place one could come to discuss or make comments of a serious nature about State athletics — pro and con, the good, the bad, the ugly.
POP!
GreywolfParticipantThe SC game may have been disappointing but it was far from monotomous. Same could be said for Marshall game.

GreywolfParticipantCool! I did the ground version from Sweden down to Prague/Budapest and lots of other places in December. You picked the right time because the sun doesn’t go down at 3 in the afternoon. We picked up a new Volvo in Gothenberg and drove around for over 2 weeks. The cruise is nice. One of my buds is starting from Budapest in October…I’m “pooping” him on how to order beer and find the bathrooms in Hungary!
A river cruise isn’t a party trip — unless you make it one. It’s not a great way to really get involved with the places you go. It’s a hit and run type trip. You mostly travel at night and visit a stop during the day. All the stops had tour guides and there were optional tours such as dinner and the opera in Vienna. No, I didn’t go on that one.
The food on a Viking Cruise is truly outstanding — taste, presentation, variety, quality. All 3 meals are a dining experience if you are into that. The wait staff will get you just about anything you want — just ask. The entire staff is most friendly and seems genuinely interested in you — from the Captain on down. The entire trip was terrific and I enjoyed to some degree most of it.
About 8 days out I picked up a cough, then chest cold and lost most of my energy and all my appetite. There’s no ‘getting off the ship and going to the doctor’ for a chest cold. On the return flight the chest cold evolved into acute bronchitus. I misread the dosage for the antibiotic for the bronchitus and only took half the dosage I was prescribed for 4 days.
Missed my first game in C-F in 15 years Saturday but will be back for Furman.
GreywolfParticipantAs I said earlier, punting has become thought of as the “safe” choice due to coaches concerns about who gets the blame, not who wins.
Your facts about going for it on 4th down are interesting. Is you conclusion that coaches take the “safe” route due to concerns about blame based on research or personal opinion. You have IMO co-mingled fact with opinion.
Perhaps most coaches believe, right or wrong, that being safe is the way to go. Teams who are behind late in a game tend to go for it on 4th down and many are successful. Should a team decide to go for it on every 4th down get ahead by doing that, the other team would go for it in order to catch up.
I would like to see the other teams go for it because we have a strong defense and while that is no guarantee we would win, I’d like our chances.
One thought would be to eliminate punting as an option. Good luck on getting that passed.
GreywolfParticipantI will freely admit that his expectations are more likely turn out to be more on target than mine but are ‘on target expectations’ what most of us are here to get?
Well, you’ll have to pardon me, sir. I might just be in the wrong place if this is indeed where folks convene to read and post about “off target expectations.” As you were.
Your and 92owen’s problem is distinguishing expectations from possibilities. I don’t post about expectations primarily because I don’t harbor “expectations.” I post a lot about possibilities.
Any fool can look up Vegas odds and derive expectations which you have honestly admitted that all you have to offer. As near as I can tell you and 92owen don’t look at what’s possible with the returning starters, the red-shirts who are will be joining the returning starters and the incoming freshmen and transfers.

I can’t seem to find the thread. If I do I may repost it.
The thread you are looking for originated as “Johnny Frasier is no longer on the roster” or something like that. It changed to a lot of comments about how and why the 2017 Pack was shaping up. I like you had put a lot of thoughts in it.
That thread suddenly disappeared. Poof! Gone. It’s too bad but it’s missing. Perhaps the admin who took it down will put it back up.
GreywolfParticipantGrey, the point is that punting is MORE risky than going for it in many situations.
Says who?
GreywolfParticipantI’m not so worried about 4th down as I am on 1st,2nd and 3rd down against teams like BC.
At first reading this sounds like a bit of a smart remark and it may have been intended that way but BC had/has a very good defensive line. DE Harold Landry is considered to be the best in the conference and one of the best in the nation. I thought BC’s game plan against us was well thought out and well executed.
By the same token our DL is one of the best in the country. Our starting 2 LB’s and NIK back are seniors. There is very little drop off if any when we rotate in defensive line and linebacker subs. Our back four is adequate.
GreywolfParticipantTraveling?
Touring South Carolina?
McCallum
Seen all of SC I need to see although I’ll admit the girls are worth a second look.
This ‘traveling’ is a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam.
GreywolfParticipantDoeren makes the final decision on 4th down go/no go. He doesn’t make the play call if he is smart. You mention the pros. The TV cameras are on the OC making the calls as they should be.
I want our coach to make the decisions that give us the best chance to win. I’m not one to put the rent money on the table to place a bet.
GreywolfParticipantGreywolf I like your passion but I think you are making his point. He is siding with the majority of strong opinions.
I disagree that I am making his point. As you said he is more or less going with the flow — siding with the current popular opinion — strong or otherwise — as is expressed by betting in Las Vegas. He doesn’t have anything to contribute to a discussion of Wolfpack football except to say that he is going with the current odds in Las Vegas. And piously calling his opinion reality. His pretense of knowing is as false as his user name indicates — Alias.
I will freely admit that his expectations are more likely turn out to be more on target than mine but are ‘on target expectations’ what most of us are here to get? I assert that most who actually discuss Wolfpack football are here for that reason — to discuss and exchange our views of Wolfpack football.
As one would expect those views are all over the map. Some are held because of the HC’s record. Some are held because of their perceived intelligence of the HC. The reasons are many and varied. Alias Troll’s reasons are the opinions expressed in the betting odds by Las Vegas clients. Nobody but a fool would think that the odds offered by Las Vegas odds makers are their opinion of which team is better. The odds change to insure that the sporting books make money regardless of who wins the game, conference championships or national championships.
freshmanin83, I’d like to hear your ideas on the current Wolfpack’s chance of being successful in 2017. We know what Vegas’s ideas are and you probably know mine. Don’t know if I will be posting much longer before Sept. 2nd as I will be traveling and haven’t decided (meaning wife hasn’t decided) if I’m taking my computer with me.
GreywolfParticipantMy book has NC State at 33 to 1 to even win the ACC championship with exactly 8 teams in front of us with better odds. 16.5 to 1 we even win the Atlantic.
I was merely sharing my personal expectations which are probably a little more grounded in reality based on Vegas odds.
I think my prior reply is pretty clear. My expectations are in line with Vegas oddsmaker’s predictions. I don’t expect us to make the college football playoffs, win the ACC championship, or even win the Atlantic division. Vegas futures clearly imply we won’t even be in the conversation.
Wow!! Your opinion, which you are trying to pass off as reality, isn’t based on your opinion at all but is actually what the bookies’ clients think. Vegas odds change depending on how the betting goes.
Actually those of us who have opinions you sneer at as being hope, etc., are what you base your opinions on. If 100,000 Wolfpack fans called your book in Las Vegas and bet on the Pack to win the conference championship, the odds would drop considerably from the 33-1 odds you are basing your expectations on. If the betting was heavy enough those odds would drop dramatically.
GreywolfParticipantI was merely sharing my personal expectations which are probably a little more grounded in reality based on Vegas odds.
What are those reality based expectations. I seem to remember 5-7 or 6-6 from a thread in the spring. (Said thread having to do with Frasier leaving has mysteriously disappeared.)
So, how about sharing the reality with us. What do you base you expectations on? We need all the reality we can get this day and time.
I’ll follow up with what I see as reasons why we will exceed low-ball expectations.

Defensive line rankings

Thanks, VA. Well done. These don’t mean anything but are mote authentic than the prejudiced ideas of some of us optimists.

Sorry about that. Know it was the Troll. Like who else would crap in a “Four Weeks to Kickoff” thread?
There is some glitch in the system that sometimes attributes quotes to the wrong poster. It’s happened to others as well.
GreywolfParticipantMy expectations are staying put for now.
What a flippin’ surprise! If we finish 10-2, your expectations would be what? 7-5?
How about refresh my memory. What are your expectations?
GreywolfParticipantI can’t locate a site for this but I have heard the Pack’s O-line is ranked in the top 30 by Athlon.
I started watching Wolfpack football back when we played in the Southern Conference and football games were won mostly by the teams who dominated in the trenches. So now we are being ranked by many as being in the top 5 D-lines (vs. the run) and top 30 O-lines. Low and behold in the CBS poll we are rated 23rd.
I know Pre-season rankings don’t mean anything. Neither does it mean anything that they don’t mean anything. (I put that in for Owen92.) lol
IMO we are the team that nobody wants to play.
GreywolfParticipantThey’ve used the copy and paste method for the Atlantic Division for what, 8 or so years now?
I thought that for the Coastal, too, until I saw where they had the sleeping giant — 5th place. Duke & the Holes both had 4 votes for 1st place.
CBS lists Wolfpack at 23 in its preseason ranking.
In those ranked 26 through 130 the reader could vote on whether we thought any team was ranked too high or too low. UMass, ranked last at 130, had 56% think they were ranked too high. You couldn’t give your opinion on the top 25 but if we could, I’m sure the Pack would get a lot of “too high” votes.
All and all it’s a harmless diversion waiting for September 2nd — if you don’t let some A-hole try and shame you into not expressing your thoughts — even if they’re the SWAG method. 😉
GreywolfParticipantThe players believe! The coaches believe. Many fans believe. You all know what Mr. DOG says about believing.
Some folk don’t get it, Mr. DOG. Say it again.
Got some opinions, though. CJ Riley will give teams fits as they hone in on Harmon.
We are a dangerous 2-deep with the wides.
GreywolfParticipantStacked with experience and headlined by an NFL first-round prospect in Bradley Chubb, the Wolfpack’s front four could be the best symbol of the program’s steady maturation under fifth-year coach Dave Doeren. And so much of the defense’s success in 2017 will depend on how well that unit stuffs the run and hits quarterbacks in the backfield.
Bryant and Roseboro are set in the rotation and are referred to as “starters.” The emphasis is on finding 2 to 4 more for the rotation especially during the hot weather. A little help from the DBs in coverage will give the DL a little more time to pressure and as you say, hit the QB.
Having the DL pretty well set is allowing them to work on ‘details’ as Coach Patrick puts it. Same hold true for the OL.
GreywolfParticipantReally looking forward to football. DD Inc have done a great job putting the program in a position to have the best season in a long time.
Secondary is a bit of a concern – as is field goal game. All in all, the most complete team we have had in my memory. A credit to his building….
During Earle Edwards’ first 6 years he was 9-21-2. The last 11 years Coach Edwards’ teams finished 1st or 2nd in the conference 8 times.
In his first 4 years Doeren is 9-23 — very similar to Edwards. Will the future be similar?
GreywolfParticipantSo, are we stealing We Believe from 1991 ECU?
Didn’t realize ECU had a copyright on believing. Perhaps they should put it to use themselves in 2017.
GreywolfParticipantI bet even Greywolf would line up to kick him in the nuts for that ludicrous prediction.
Greywolf doesn’t see it as a prediction, but simply a statement of belief that the Wolfpack, could possibly make it to the CFP. Cole Cubelic of the SEC media made one early season prediction that the Pack will be in the playoffs. Cubelic admits that prediction was more to stimulate preseason conversation than a serious prediction. Even that is a little more bold than I am willing to be.
Considering the failure to win any significant games and the losing conference record, you have to wonder what these outsiders are seeing that’s influencing these seemingly ludicrous statements and so-called asinine predictions.
I guess I had better post something that gives non-believers something to rail about.
The players believe! The coaches believe. Many fans believe. You all know what Mr. DOG says about believing.
Our D-line is as good as it needs to be.
Our starting LBs are 4-year starters and this year are backed up adequately.
One starting CB is very good.
The other started some games as a freshman.
One safety is returning and is very good
The others need to prove themselves.
Getting off the bus they do look like football players.
The returning safety is being checked out at NIK.
Either they will or they won’t be a problem. Our OC is in his second season and is comfortable with his players.
The players are comfortable with the offensive system.*
The playbook is opening up.
Our QB has put on 15 lbs of muscle.
Our top 2 receivers are back and their back ups look like starters
We have our secret weapon, JaySam, returning.
The O-line has reasonable experience.
Is competing very well with our D-line
Is aggressive and sometimes just plain nastyOur RBs must step up. If not one then by committee.
The kicker must come through adequately but not necessarily spectacularly. It will be easy to find fault but we should be OK.* On the first day of fall practice the offense started to install more of the offense. We were on the first day where we were last year at the first game.
IMNSHO If we play up to our capabilities, we all will be happy with the Pack. If the ball bounces our way a few times, we will be very happy and our expectations level will go off the charts.
