So, apparently we loosened ‘Cuse up enough that pretty much anyone can beat them now….aaargh
FergusWolfParticipant^^I need one of those silver lining blankets for every game.
Or, I could just go for Jennifer Lawrence’s silver linings playbook (cheap and cheesy, I know):<br>
Hot girls always make the day better.
thanks!
FergusWolfParticipantOk, you win on the defense front, this is actually the worst defense we’ve had in years.
FergusWolfParticipantAlso want to point out that we have 4 games that the final score at the end of regulation was either 0 or 1 point that we lost
That would be:
NCCU lost in OT
Wake lost by 1
Syracuse lost by 1
UNC lost by 1 in OT.So, you could say…if we had score 6 (count them 6) more points in regulation time, we could be 21-7 and 10-5 in conference, with two wins over top 25 RPI teams, and 2 fewer bad losses.
Skipping all the complaints about calls (which I think we have at least in the 3 ACC games), it shows just how close we are to being a good team.
FergusWolfParticipantWTH I might as well go against the grain just for the sake of being stoopid.
Pack wins 85-74
Don’t ask for the details or how they will do it becasue I have no freaking clue!
Someone’s gotta go there, just so someone can say “I told you so” tomorrow.
I’m being safe, I’m telling half the people I talk to that I think we will win, the other half that I think we will lose. Either way, I’ll be right with half the people tomorrow.
All the negative talk aside, I think our team is made up of a great group of upstanding young players, who are doing the right thing by attending class and working hard. The team, across the board, needs experience, which they are getting.
Go pack!
FergusWolfParticipantfound this on twitter, after I picked myself off the floor, I decided to share it here:

The Shockers are REALLY fun to watch. They play balls to the wall. And they do have some very good players.
There are several teams that play this way, Duke, WSU, VCU, probably more that I’m not aware of. Unfortunately in the ACC, we have Virginia, VT, and Clempson that stifle all the fun out of the game.
I really like attacking defenses and attacking offenses. But then, I watch NASCAR, Snowboard Cross, and Curling for the crashes too…
Maybe there is something wrong with me, I’ll ask my wife.

We were up 28 last year on these assclowns , dammit!

FergusWolfParticipantSo, out of interest, I watched part of the Wichita State vs. Bradley game last night.
If you haven’t seen them play, I’m sure you’ll get a chance during the tourney.
The motivation and commitment they demonstrated during the game was what I want to see every time I watch and NC State game…
I saw that during the Syracuse game, I didn’t see it during the first half of UN*, first half of Duke, any of Clemson (I could go on…)
It would be easy for WSU to say “Hey, we’re 29-0 and playing Bradley (who has a sub-0.500 record in their league), so we don’t really have to try hard tonight”., but they didn’t to that. And, even though they were not shooting well in the first half (3-14 from 3pt line at one point), they were hustling…

I remember a post a few weeks ago where the poster made a good point. What if the fellas are reading these forums? What if they saw the lack of faith people have in them? Could that be contributing to their lack of confidence on the court?Today’s world is different that previous generations, these guys have had access to people lauding their greatness and tearing them down for their every flaw since they were in middle school.
By now, the smart ones have figured out not to visit web-sites like StateFansNation.com, because 94.3% of it is irrational hooey.
I’d be more worried about the paranoia our team would have about the refs /league/country/taliban/etc… all being out to get them (personally), because they decided to play for state. That’s the predominant theme of this web site at times. If they read this web-site they would be constantly looking over their shoulder waiting for a bad call..
hm…. maybe THATs why Des dribbled off his shoe, because he was looking over his shoulder…
FergusWolfParticipantAnd, yes, I have spent too much time thinking about this
FergusWolfParticipantsee, I have a different, yet equally awful guess as to how the game is going to play out…
In the first half, we are going to play lights out ball, probably lead by, say 17 at half time…but, the fouls are going to a lopsided, and TJ will have 2 just before the half.
We will come out on fire at the beginning of the second half and quickly stretch the lead to 25 points…then, TJ gets his third foul, 3 minutes into the second half.
Due to a stretch of bad shots, turn overs, ridiculous fouls, at least one technical on Des Lee, and 2 missed Vanderoops, Carolina will out score us 31 to 9 in the next 16 minutes and 50 seconds. Leaving us up by 3
During which time, TJ, V-berg, Des Lee, Ralston Turner, and Tyler Lewis will have all fouled out of the game. In fact, the only reason we will still be tied is that Carolina only hits 12 of their 39 free throws in the 2nd half.
Then, we will have the ball with 10 seconds left, and rather than allow himself to be fouled, Cat will put up a quick three, miss badly, and the ball will go out of bounds.
Carolina will get the ball under the basket with 5 second left, a quick pass to Paige at 3/4 court. He will heave up a shot, and be fouled by Barber…and, then Freeman will goal-tend the shot at the other end, leaving the score tied, no time on the clock, and Paige at the line…
The next thing I’ll remember is waking up in the mental patient ward, with my wife explaining that I had a nervous breakdown.
FergusWolfParticipantMaybe….
TJ will be so offended that he didn’t get his due from the media that he will insist on returning to State for his Junior year just to prove the media wrong…
What? I guy can dream, can’t he?
FergusWolfParticipant^ I’m with Wufpacker, the stats don’t really show anything yet. No pitcher has started twice, number of at-bats are not statistically significant yet. At 10-15 games into the season, they should start to round out.
FergusWolfParticipantIf the bats keep up this pace as the season goes along, that really gives the pitchers a lot of flexibility to go strong against batter.
I’m willing to wager that the high our scoring average, the more strikeouts our pitchers throw…
But, that’s probably obvious to everyone else.
FergusWolfParticipantI think if you are TB Management/Head Coach, and you have an opportunity to go after a big-time talent, then you go after it.
At a minimum, you have 2 potential franchise quarterback, so if either of them work out, you are good, if BOTH of them work out, you have excellent trade bait.
FergusWolfParticipantDefense wins games, like it or not, unless you have multiple elite scorers (we have 1, a pretty d@mn good one, but only one).
If I was in Yow’s position, I’d be sitting in GOTTS office right now explaining to him how he was going to retool his assist coaches next year (chances are one or more of them leaves for low-level HC positions anyway), and he need to grab an assistant from a defense oriented program. There are 71 teams with better FG % defense and 141 teams with better scoring defense…certainly SOMEONE would be available.
I’m not suggesting we go with a Virgina or Clempson like game plan where were bore the opposing team and fans into submission. An active attacking defense, like Duke, Maryland of past years, or VCU would still provide for interesting games.
Also, as noted above, we need to consistently have 2 3-point threats on the floor (meaning at least 3 on the team). I’m pretty sure that leading the nation in % of points coming from 2-point baskets is a big time winning strategy.
FergusWolfParticipant^^^^ I must have missed something…how was ANYTHING about our first half against UNC “fantastic”…unless you are a UNC fan?
EDIT:
I want to be clear, I’m not accusing you of being a UNC fan, I assuming maybe you meant 2nd half or something.
FergusWolfParticipant^^ PapaWolf
Dang…knew I was going to miss someone. I also forget HWSNBN.
FergusWolfParticipantI’m just glad we have another game to focus on, so we can (at least temporarily forget about how not only the refs and the ACC, but likely the NCAA, possibly the “establishment”, and maybe even the KGB has singled out NC State for long term pain. Probably has to do with that ’83 national championship).
Anyway, the think that GOTT is a good enough coach to reinforce the positives from Saturdays game, fix some of the negatives, and use the end of the game as an example of why we need to be up by 10 with 1 minute to go.
Another point of good news is that there is no Raleigh native on the Tiger’s team who will take this opportunity to have a career night.
So, now all we have to watch out for is the player with latent 3 point skills who is bound to have a 24 point night.
FergusWolfParticipantSo, the documentation of us being unlucky in a large number of losses is that (how ironic is this), Herb Sendek’s ASU team was the benefit of a no-call playing against Sean Miller’s AZ team, and Duke was the benefactor of an “administrative error” in their game against Maryland…
This doesn’t really establish a pattern of “bad calls” against US.
I guess you could consider the no-call on ASU vs. AZ as “against US” because we like to hate on Herb.
But, we kind of hate on Duke and Maryland the same (I personally blame everything that goes wrong for me in life on Greivis Vásquez), so I don’t know how that was against us,….
So, unless we are deciding that the ACC wanted Duke to beat Maryland because it would make our RPI worse (since we had beaten Maryland, not Duke), rather than because Maryland was abandoning the conference, I don’t see how this like was “documentation”.
I think we like being thought of as the lunatic fringe.

There’s a lack of consistency, there’s a trend of our opponent – whomever it is – being the beneficiary of that inconsistency, and that’s why a lot of us continue to be so frustrated.
I’d like to see documentation of this trend. I’m sure it (the documentation) doesn’t exist, except in our brains as NC State fans.
None of the conspiracy theory statements, particularly those that indicate that NC State has been singled out hold any water, and just make it easier for the media to go back to the “lunatic fringe” title for us.
Yes, over the years, there have been bad calls at bad times against us. But just a few weeks ago, Pitt had Syracuse by 6 with 1:45 left in the game and Syracuse outscore Pitt 10-2 the rest of the game. I didn’t see the game, but I guarantee with the microscope we put on the game, if it was State losing that one we would have picked out 14 missed calls, two goal tends, and bench technical.
We’ve got to stop using the ref’s as our excuse for losing and establish a winning culture.
And, if you want to drag conspiracy into it, go with it this way:
- The perceived “better” team is NEARLY ALWAYS going to get the benefit of the doubt in a 50/50 situation
So, we need to make ourselves the “better” team.
FergusWolfParticipantI’m not going to comment on what’s done, because it’s done and the media is already jumping on the “lunatic fringe” rationalization, so we, as State fans end up looking like a bunch of whiners, which I don’t enjoy.
Instead, I’m looking to the future. We have 6 winnable games ahead of us. We need our team to have the kind of focus and effort that we put into the Syracuse game for each of the 6 games.
After watching the game on Saturday, I’m convinced that we can win all 6 of our remaining games, leaving us 22-9 and 12-6 in conference going into the ACC tournament. That is far, far better than I would have guessed.
We play a smart, controlled game, never had a significant period where we allowed Syracuse to take control of the game, always kept it within reach. Sure, the game wasn’t perfect, but Syracuse is a tough team also, tougher than anyone left on our schedule.
So, I hope the coaching staff can properly use our play and loss to motivate our players going into Clempson, and that our player take their play to mean that with the right effort, we can beat anyone, without the right effort, we can lose to anyone.
Go Pack!
FergusWolfParticipantapparently I suck I attaching images. well, add that to the list of things I suck at
FergusWolfParticipantI miss the wide variety of face palm pictures, so I thought I’d add some.
anyway…enough of that digression…
I’ve been pretty happy with the development of our young bigs this year. The Vandwagon started out hot, which I think helped a lot, and both Freeman and Washington have contributed quality minutes. They are far from perfect, but I think in a year or two with more experience, strength, and body weight (except KH), we will be pretty happy with them.
