FergusWolfParticipant
But, as Joe Ovies would tell you (and he does, at least 100 times a day), the current crop of “student”-athletes didn’t have anything to do with the scandal.
What Joe forgets to mention is that 18 years of cheating and reaping the rewards from it goes a long way in recruiting. How many of those guys would have gone to Carolina if the program for 18 years would have had to rely on “student”-athletes that could actually pass the classes?
How many fewer ACC titles, NCAA titles, etc…would they have? Would not having them have changed the playing field? Would Roy Williams ever have left Kansas?
Just like we can’t blame the current players for the scandal, no one can say whether the current players would even be here if it hadn’t been for the cheating.
FergusWolfParticipantnow would be the ideal (for UNC) time for the NCAA to decide that penalizing players that weren’t part of the program at the time of the violations is NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS, also, they will conclude that stripping past teams of wins and/or championships amounts to no penalty at all.
So, as a result of this, the NCAA will fine UNC $5000, and smack them on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper.
FergusWolfParticipantWent to a family lunch on Saturday. My sister-in-law (who is a Carolina grad) was proclaiming the unfairness if the situation that they were going to have to play a bunch of cheaters (meaning Syracuse) on Saturday.
Apparently she is completely unaware (or blissfully ignorant) that the university she got her degree from was happy to cheapen the value of her degree by giving them away to athletes with no work required…
Or, maybe she also enjoyed the “no work” classes…I’ll have to ask next time.
FergusWolfParticipantI predict that not only will UNC get off Scott free, but they will actually be awarded several national championships (most notedly those for basketball in 1974 and 1983) due to the inconvenience heaped on UNC during the lengthy investigations.
FergusWolfParticipant^ Wow, that’s a hard one to bite. What the twin are effectively communicating to me (and I know, my brain doesn’t work right), is that they admit they are not as good as the other players, and are unwilling to work harder to get good enough to earn the playing time.
I always appreciated the twins effort on the court (if not always the result of that effort), but this I’m transferring because I’m not getting the promised playing time (because the other players are better)…urg
FergusWolfParticipant^^
I’m assuming you mean the Wear twins, not the Drew twins…unless you are talking about Larry Drew II schizophrenic personality 🙂
FergusWolfParticipantI find it somewhat incredible (not to say that I don’t believe it) that ANY player would believe that minutes were “Guaranteed”. No coach in his right mind is going to actually do that, regardless of what the “promises” were.
Are kids really dumb enough to believe that?
FergusWolfParticipant^ +1
But, maybe as important, can he heal the locker room. We not only need the DSJ types, but we need the bench players who are willing to stick around for 4 years to get their shot.
I think one of the downsides to the Martin twins getting early starts because of a short bench was that once they got the starts and the minutes they didn’t like the though of giving them up.
FergusWolfParticipantIs there solace in the fact that UVA plays very boring basketball?
I think that success overwhelms boring
FergusWolfParticipantmaybe when it’s time, Julius Hodge will be ready…currently at Santa Clara with HWSNBN
FergusWolfParticipant…close enough to zero that I’m not going to waste time trying to figure out which is more likely.
but…but…wasting time is what we do best
FergusWolfParticipantTrivial. Fire now, worry about the consequences later.
Maybe Sid would be up for round 2
FergusWolfParticipantStrange that my posts aren’t showing up.
Even stranger that the only one that does is the strange one.
Frankly, I’d be ok with firing Gott now. My only concern is who we would get to replace him. Would probably have to be lucky and pickup a young guy from a mid-major that could become the hall of famer we would want him to be. No sense in picking up anyones retread.
FergusWolfParticipantAnd, before you ask, yes, I did start drinking early today
FergusWolfParticipantActually, Archie signing the contract extension at Dayton may be the thing that finally works out for us…my prediction is:
2016 – Abu goes pro, someone transfers (probably Anya), we finish 6-12 in the ACC, no tourney
2017 – DSJ goes pro, everyone else transfers, we match BC’s record for 0 wins, Yow retires, new AD, Gottfried is fired, Archie is hired
2018 – We hardly have a team, but Archie coaches us to 9-9 in the ACC anyway, no tourney
2019 – We are in a building mode with a young coach who will lead us to an ACC title in 2021FergusWolfParticipantNot sure why with this team it’s starters minutes or transfer.
It’s because Gott plays such a short bench. If you aren’t in the top 7, you are sitting
FergusWolfParticipantHenderson + Dorn = Less time. ( Per step-father ) “…they felt that they didn’t fit into the offense. “
I’m not sure what this quote means…the Gott offense is whichever player takes over…TJ Warren -> Trevor Lacey -> Cat Barber -> ????
I’m guessing the issue is that the players don’t feel they can trust the coach…which seems like a HUGE issue to me…
FergusWolfParticipantHe does introduce the concept of relegation into the college landscape, which I think would be a fantastic idea. There needs to be some penalty for being a dumpster-fire like suckfest.
But, the branding would have to be handled carefully, as colleges won’t accept changing conferences, it would have to be divisions or something.
Still, I’d be surprised if ANYTHING he says actually happens, college football makes so much money now that they aren’t going to take a chance of breaking a good thing.
FergusWolfParticipantProbably would have helped (although only slightly) if he would have linked the article he’s talking about…
It’s here: Link to article
That being said, this was written by someone who is speculating how he thinks things would change if all of the assumptions he is making is correct. In other words…he’s pretty much making stuff up.
FergusWolfParticipantMight be interesting. I’m going to be in New Mexico through the 23rd. it’s just a quick jump to vegas from there.
03/11/2016 at 9:09 AM in reply to: Should Mens BBall Go Back to Reynolds? One former player thinks so. #101240FergusWolfParticipantIf they don’t go anywhere it’s because no one wants them. Last in the league in attendance by a long shot.
This is what a market economy does to losing teams. Look at the long term attendance and you can see that in the past 10 years they’ve lost 5,000 people per game on average. If the team started winning again, the attendance would shoot back up.
That, or schedule the penguins every game…
FergusWolfParticipantWhile I’m sure I didn’t watch as many minutes of NC Basketball as Cat Barber played (I’d like to see the statistic for him, minutes played vs. minutes not played), my thoughts are as follows:
1. Watching Cat Barber was amazing. I was in school at the beginning of Chris Corchiani’s playing time, and I completely missed everything that happened before 1985, but in my mind, Cat is the best PG we’ve ever had.
2. The upside for Mav Rowan is very high. I think before he’s done, Scott Wood will have faded in our collective memories
3. The year was certainly disappointing, but at least the team listened to Jimmy V.: they never gave up. Too bad we couldn’t say the same for the fans.Enjoy the offseason guys, but remember, in 8 months we start this road again…
FergusWolfParticipantBeejay just always seems like a guy looking for a good time. I’m not sure he’s NBA material.
FergusWolfParticipantIf you think about it, that’s about the expected quality for a 12 vs. 13 game. Close, but not good basketball. Nice to see Mav get one a roll, he’s going to be big for us next year.
FergusWolfParticipantI’m personally savoring every opportunity I have to see Cat Barber play, so losing today is worse than losing tomorrow. I’m hoping Cowdog is right and Cat sticks around for his senior year, but just in case, I want to enjoy every moment.
