I see Frank Haith (formerly of the U) is leaving Mizzou for the basketball mecca that is Tulsa (Danny Manning’s former employer). Interesting. Pat Forde’s Yahoo story overtly implies the black coaches are leaving the SEC for lesser programs because of the way they are treated by fans/alum.
I think it is likely much more complicated and complex to pin on one thing, but no doubt racism and bigotry would be a big part of it.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/frank-haith-merely-the-latest-african-american-coach-to-leave-sec-for-lesser-job-060826346.htmlDaniel_Simpson_DayParticipantCan’t say I’m shocked, but I hate that Ware had to transfer; I hope that was genuinely his decision.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWhen I saw this my first thought was how long before someone makes the HS to ASU comparison. Never mind we had 10 years to reach a conclusion on HS. I hate this for UT and completely understand why Martin left; UT’s administration is a slow motion train wreck.
04/16/2014 at 12:17 PM in reply to: Gottfried’s Wolfpack will have work cut out for them next year #51194Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWhile I agree we have several players with the potential to see significant growth in their game between year 1 and year 2 (Anya, Barber, Washington, Freeman), I just can’t bring myself to raise expectations above last year. As Rick and others have said, that is a lot to ask when you lose Warren and Lewis. I see us finishing in the middle third again, somewhere in the 8, 9, 10 range, but I can understand how some can see the potential for us to finish in the 5-7 range. Anything above that is a reach imho.
That being said, before the start of this past season I thought Warren was a garbage basket scorer (from observations from his freshman year) that would have trouble creating his own shot so WTF do I know.
And I too miss Noah. The great thing about being a pessimist is you are constantly either being proven right or pleasantly surprised.
For NCSU to have success in basketball, Gottfried is going to have to keep his core guys together for 2, 3, 4 year stretches. Losing key members is going to significantly handicap his chances of gaining a foothold in the ACC. The group of 4 I mentioned above is a great foundation that could really pay dividends in the spring of 2016. That is what keeps me from jumping completely off the Gottfried bandwagon.

Some sirens love up your buddy Pete and turn him into a horny toad?
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI got fraud…sounds about right; thanks Don Draper. The consequences: being split into pieces over and over. My significant other would love to only have to deal with about ¼ of me. Question is, which ¼; I can think of one area that cannot handle any reduction. There aint nothing silly about that, Jack.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantIMHO Manning would be a high risk hire. Very little sample size of HC and a small amount of assistant coach experience. Hometown hero hire is not the way to go; seems like a reach to me.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“…think it will be Brad Stevens. That’s about the right timeframe for him to get sick of the NBA.” – that’s the exact thought I had; I just didn’t have the guts to put it on paper.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI would hope Duke has learned from their friends down the road it is not a good idea to limit yourself to candidates inside the “family” as well as how it turns out when the outgoing coach names his successor.
I haven’t been overwhelmingly impressed with Amaker or Dawkins; their resumes don’t scream success. Both have sub-0.500 conference records at their power conference schools. Collins may be ready by the time K retires, but 6-12 in the B10 isn’t going to impress anyone even if it is your first year at Northwestern. I think that might be the job S. Smart is holding out for.03/26/2014 at 11:29 AM in reply to: Steve Masiello should have waited to apply for the Chapel Hill job #49615Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWhat is this guy thinking; this won’t be discovered? It is so easy to complete a degree these days with on-line classes that this is inexcusable. I guess you get away with it for a few years and you sort of forget about it. Like George Costanza said, “it’s not a lie if you believe it is true”.
All that being said, I wouldn’t let something like this keep me from hiring the guy at a low-mid tier program. UNCW, App St, etc. should be happy to have him (if they don’t have a min. bachelor type qualification) if Manhattan doesn’t want him back. Just like O’Leary, he’ll get another job.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantLike I said in another thread, the coaching carousel season is going to be painful for me to watch if GT, WF and BC make coaching hires comparable to VPI. There are so many good to great candidates out there and they will likely make substantial improvement before their first practice. The more good coaches I see in this tourney the more it makes my heart ache to think we may have Herb2.0 (and I hate putting that on Gottfried, but that’s what I see). I can already see the divisiveness in the fan base starting to emerge.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantRetreads are not the way to go for big time basketball coaching hires. They are fine for programs coming off scandals or probation, but not for programs looking to make the next step.
Obviously there is no way we make a coaching change which makes the coaching carousel so difficult for me to watch this year. There is huge potential for other ACC programs (BC, VPI, GT, WF) to make a monumental leap just by making a coaching change. Unfortunately I’m afraid we are stuck in that purgatory of a program with a coach who does just enough to not get fired, but doesn’t really accomplish anything spectacular. I see a foundation of good players on our team, but I don’t see any go to guy on next year’s team or on the horizon. Maybe Lee or Turner evolve into that guy.
I was not a fan of the Gottfried hire when it happened and I remain skeptical despite the good recruiting numbers. The offseason and next year will be an indicator of how well this staff can manage, teach and develop a team. Anything short of a top half ACC finish and NCAA bid next year will reinforce my opinion of the staff, in spite of any chemistry/cohesion problems that may develop/exist over the next 7 months.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“Is not “Beating the Road”… an automatic stay of execution?” If that is your criteria for head coaching decisions I think it is extremely narrow-minded. By that philosophy it’s ok if you go 3-15 in conference so long as you beat NCSU, Duke and UNC? In year 4? I don’t think that should be tolerated anywhere, but it seems to be the case in W-S.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI heard speculation on David Glenn’s show that Bzdelik will be retained but two assistants will be let go. WTH good is that going to do?!? Do they not know Phil Jackson already has a job and is not interestedin being on Bzdelik’s bench?
If they retain Bzdelik, it will truly be a most stubborn move for Wellman. Wellman is obviously very well respected by his peers, but your coach has a 51-76 overall record and a 17-51 conference record. That is 51 conference losses in 4 years. That’s an average of nearly 13 conference losses per year for those of you who went to HS in Bertie County.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI don’t know what to say – appears to be from the Asheville Citizen Times.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“Surprisingly solid attendance for this garbage” – A lady I work with is in attendance for today’s “festivities” with her entire family just for the Scotty McCreery concert. Sad that the highlight of the opening round might be that guy.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantMan has that program tanked since B. Brownell left. Wonder if either program will look at LeVelle Moton. I’d expect he would be a more realistic candidate for both programs than Lutz.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantThis move is actually coming a year late, but that’s hindsight. They should also be moving D. Williams and J. Stewart; too much money tied up in those three skill position players. Defensively they are pretty set but the offense needs help in several areas, especially after losing J. Gross. Lots of work for the front office to do.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantOne of the more interesting questions for Wake is will Wellman be around to make the next coaching hire or did he use up all of his AD equity sticking with his buddy for too long?
Everybody swings and misses and makes a bad hire every once in a while. Indiana, UNC, Kentucky & UCLA have all made bad coaching hires. The difference is when those programs make a bad hire, it’s usually obvious to everyone within 3-5 years. When Clemson, VPI, GT, BC, etc. make a bad hire it takes a while for the general public/media/fans to call attention to it. Unless you hire Bzdelik and it is obvious even before the press conference that it’s a bad hire.
Clemson & NCSU outperformed my expectations. FSU, Md, ND & BC were disappointing to me this year. Funny, but WF tied for 11th at 6-12 outperformed my expectations. I didn’t think they would win 4 ACC games.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantCoY – Bennett ; PoY – Warren
1st Team – Warren, Paige, Parker, Ennis, Harris
2nd Team – McDaniels, Fair, Patterson, Hanlan, McAdoo
You can make the argument to switch Ennis & Harris with McDaniels, Fair or Patterson.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“No Coaching experience.” – Bilas was an assistant under K while attending Duke Law school after his professional playing days in Europe.
Not that being a coach has anything to do with being a conference administrator. I would value experience as a D-1 athletic director over coaching experience; also, I think knowledge of contract law would be more valuable than many of the attributes commonly associated with an atheltics director.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWolfpup76 said “…plus Virginia has once again benefited from an unbalanced schedule in a top-heavy league. They beat Pitt on the road, and lost to Duke on the road (probably should have won the Duke game). They played Syracuse and *nx at home. That’s it though as far as tests among the top teams. The rest of the ACC is easily beaten home or away. This is certainly not to discredit Virginia’s accomplishments thus far in the season – just factual.”
What you say is true, but if UVA really is a mediocre team (read has mediocre talent), then I think that’s a testament to Bennett’s coaching ability. UVA doesn’t have any conference WTF losses. Any coach can get their players up to play home games against top 25 “name” programs like UNC, Syracuse or Duke. A great coach is able to keep his players motivated and hungry for every game. Personally, I think going 16-1 even in a “weak” ACC indicates your team is anything but mediocre. I think UVA is being labeled a paper tiger or an anomaly because they haven’t been in this position for 30 years and they didn’t get a lot of pre-season hype. An early elimination from the tourney (ACC or NCAA) wouldn’t surprise me any more than an early exit for Duke, Syracuse or UNC.
UVA is taking advantage of their opportunities (read “while other programs struggle”). Something we have repeatedly failed to do over the past two+ decades.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI was thrilled to see FSU and Miami have great regular season and ACCT success in lieu of the blues. It thrills me to see UVA on top of the standings over Duke, Syracuse and UNC.
BJD said – “Back to the topic at hand, I am a little hesitant about building a “defense first” model. Such teams usually flame out come tournament time, when you need to hit a higher offensive gear…”
Mike Krzyzewski began his career at Duke by instilling defensive tenacity and solid fundamentals. As the talent level of his recruits/players improved, he adjusted his coaching style and philosophy. That is the key for a coach like Bennett. Lay the foundation and build from there. I don’t see any reason a guy like Bennett can’t do the exact same thing. Personally I would trade Gottfried for Bennett right now. Maybe that’s shortsighted and blasphemous, but it’s how I feel right this minute.
My $0.02 worth.02/28/2014 at 3:36 PM in reply to: Is TJ Warren the best basketball player we\'ve had since David Thompson? #43252Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantShhhhh, I should have chosen a less conspicuous handle. HR was great. Before his passing few knew of his connection to the guys from the Delta house.
02/28/2014 at 3:22 PM in reply to: Is TJ Warren the best basketball player we\'ve had since David Thompson? #43247Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantGood topic to divert attention from Wednesday’s debacle. IMHO, I think you are reaching Pike. I’d put Baily, Monroe and Guggs over TJW. The basis for my opinion is if you put any of those guys on this team I think they would put up (at a minimum) comparable numbers to Warren especially Monroe. Now he is definitely having the best performance as a second year player as any of the guys I listed. Warren is just a bit too one dimensional to label as “best since” (and one dimensional may be a bit harsh on my part).
