Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant
“I am not sure how this would affect him with playing baseball this spring for FSU” – I would be shocked if he is on campus; there is no way he is going to class (assuming he has ever gone to class).
I listen to a lot of sports radio and all the talking heads/experts whose opinions I respect say there is no comparison between Winston and Mariota (as in that Winston is far and away a better pro prospect than Mariota). I can understand that and appreciate their evaluations. However, were I an NFL GM, in desperate need of a franchise QB there is no way I would draft either of them. I’d draft the next best player or trade the pick to the highest bidder and hope I can find my guy next year. I’ve heard a lot of experts talk about Winston’s high football IQ, but he comes across as a mental midget to me. I see Winston being an NFL bust; maybe not to the degree of a Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russell, but a bust nonetheless.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantDaniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“Now that, for all practical purposes, would make most any kind of development virtually impossible…” BotB, I’ve always assumed the majority of the property is undevelopable by today’s standards anyway because of wetlands and bad soils. If the owner did grant the feds/military an easement for training, I would bet money the majority of that area is wet. Either that or someone made a booboo.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantTexpack, I’ll be curious to hear what your neighbors think about their new coach. Mike Riley is no spring chicken at 61 and his resume is fairly meh. Career record @ OSU: 93-80 overall and 58-63 in conference.
I understand wanting to hire a good person to heal some of the PR wounds left by Pelini, but how long are the boosters going to tolerate hovering around .500 every year on the heals of a coach who won 9+ every year?
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI think it’s splitting hairs to not call VPI a national power. They’ve had back–to-back subpar performances by “national power” standards, but in the past 20 years they have thirteen 10+ win seasons. I’m not going to do the research, but in the past 25 years I bet the list of teams with a stretch like that is pretty limited. Oregon has nine 10+ win seasons in that same period; 6 in the past 6 years.
Now, VPI may have peaked and we may be witnessing the beginning of their decline, but I still consider them a national power.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantIt’s easy to forget how good VPI has been for the past 20 years because of their recent mediocrity. In the past 20 years VPI has thirteen 10+ win seasons. That is astounding to me for a ‘lil ole land grant school in Blacksburg, Va. In that same period, Oregon has nine (six straight in the past six years).
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“I wouldn’t put Virginia Tech in the “national power” classification like I would Oregon”

I think the BB gun antics are rather pedestrian, although the actions clearly show a level of immaturity. The real lesson to be taught is how easily these BB guns can be mistaken for actual guns and therein lies the real danger.
For reference, when I was a kid in high school and college, I helped my father train bird dogs. For this I had one of my Dad’s old “starter” pistol that fired only blanks, no red cap on the end of the barrel to indicate it was not a real gun. Because I was an idiot teenager I kept the thing in my glove box. One night I got pulled by a state trooper in town because of a busted tail light. When I opened the glove box to get my registration the starter pistol dropped out. The trooper was busy running my license on the radio so he didn’t even notice the thing and I quickly tossed it to the back of the glove box, but had he seen it things could have gotten really uncomfortable.

And as warden Norton said, there’s only three ways to use the taxpayers money: more walls, more bars and more guards.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantTFJ, I figured you were and I guess I should have added a smiley face emogi.
The issue that I have not seen addressed and I’m very curious about is if the police force is hostile and aggressive to the black people in Ferguson and it is a predominantly black community, why do they continue to elect local officials (city council & mayor) that tolerate their hired LEO to behave in that manner?
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“It’s about agenda, you big dummies” – so much for having a civil discussion
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantThe more I read from the other witnesses, the more I believe the officer’s overall account.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI hate to bring this back up, but am hoping it can be discussed in a civil manner; hard to believe this all started over three months ago.
The rioting and destruction of private property is unjustifiable.
But I do find it reasonable to vocally question the officer’s account of what transpired. I’ve read it and I think anyone who is truly objective will agree that it sounds fishy, possibly coached (particularly the part about the kid reaching in his waistband). I also read the account of Brown’s friend Dorian Johnson and I believe portions of his account can be questioned as well.
One side is portraying the kid as a stoned, loud mouthed, out of control thug/punk and painting the cop as the model civil servant. The other side is claiming the cop overreacted and shot an innocent college bound kid multiple times while he was trying to surrender with his hands in the air.
The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. Kid was probably being disrespectful; cop probably overreacted and couldn’t control his rage and it escalated from there. Cooler heads on either side likely prevents the whole situation. Sounds like the community was a powder keg waiting for a spark. Sad all around.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI think it can be reasonably argued that the Coastal is a more competitive division compared to the Atlantic division. The disparity between the best team and the worst team is much closer than in the Atlantic. The Atlantic is top heavy; three good teams, two average teams and two really bad teams. Is VPI really that bad? Are GT & Duke really that good? Or are all 7 teams just ok?
I know it’s not a very good metric, but the average RPI of the Coastal division is 48; the Atlantic’s is 54 (WF’s RPI is 128).
For reference, the average RPI of the SEC west is 17 and the SEC east is 52.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantMy nature is to focus on the negatives since those are things that need to be corrected. 15 TOs is too many against a team of this caliber, especially 5 by Barber. The FT shooting is one of the few things you can evaluate regardless of opponent. 18-28 isn’t horrible, but it’s not spectacular either. However, when you point out that 4 of the missed FTs were from the Martin twins and a garbage minute player then the FTs look a lot better.
Most players have a significant jump in their FT% from their freshman to sophomore seasons, i.e. +7.5%. That is an area that needs significant improvement from Freeman, Washington and Anya if we are going to win close conference games. <50% FT shooting from the big men will cost us games.
Did we really get 20 offensive rebounds and 53 total rebounds?!? Were we playing Lilliputians?Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantInteresting, I’m surprised you guys think so highly of TCU, Baylor and the teams in the B12 they have beaten. Do you think your view is skewed because MSU’s loss is more fresh than the others? I think that is one of the things the committee has vowed to avoid, i.e. penalizing teams for having the most recent loss.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“A one-loss B-12 champ (TCU or Baylor) will go over a one-loss Miss St team that doesn’t even play in the championship game.” – they may. Do you say that because you think the Big12 champion is better than MSU? Or are you saying Miss St shouldn’t even be considered because they (probably) can’t win the SEC? I think Miss St should be in the final four because they are one of the 4 best teams in the country.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“FSU won’t be the top seed Tuesday night I don’t think. It will either be Bama or Oregon with FSU as the 3 seed” – Personally, I don’t see how the committee can jump Bama from 5th to 1st, even with another shaky showing from FSU. Oregon, FSU, Bama, MissSt in that order. That’s it; that’s the list. The Big12 and Big10 can go pound sand.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipant“I do have one question. What about this post is not factual?” – don’t go expecting the rah-rah, everything is sunshine and rainbows crowd to be able to objectively evaluate the program or the coaching staff. They are now emotionally invested in this coaching staff and they will defend them tooth and nail to the very end. I seem to remember SFN having this same problem about 10 years ago with some fans giving their undying love and support of a certain b-ball coach (not that DD is comparable to that b-ball coach; I’m comparing the emotional attachment certain fans develop with a coach earlier than they probably should).
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWufpacker, the condescension and overall douchebaggeryness of a handful of posters here are really becoming a buzz kill. Cause and effect for the degradation of the forums.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantWas listening to Dan LeBatard’s podcast from yesterday and the FSU-Miami line looks suspicious. From what LeBatard said, the gambling public is betting on FSU, but the big money professional gamblers are betting on Miami which is making the line creep down. Looks kinda fishy.
To me that line is screaming for you to take FSU. By the Costanza rule of opposites, I am going to put my kid’s college tuition on Miami.Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI made a cursory glance at which FBS schools have been shut out so far this season.
Week 1 – Southern Miss, Southern Methodist
Week 2 – Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Michigan
Week 3 – Army, Kent State, Louisiana Monroe
Week 4 – Troy
Week 5 – Southern Methodist, Kansas
Week 6 – NCSUThere are 128 FBS schools so that means there are roughly 60 games each week so roughly 3%-4% of all the games played have resulted in an FBS team being shutout. That’s not good company to be in. I’m not trying to kick dirt on the program, just throwing some numbers out there to show how rare it is for an FBS school to go an entire game without scoring any points.
Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantSorry to continue on my tangent, but…
“…the best bird dog I ever had was a Brittany.” – BoB, I like Brittanys, but they better stay out of the cockleburs. -
