For a while I have maintained that the biggest problem with basketball is the lack of spacing because players are quicker and longer. My proposed fix is to make the courts bigger. Sounds like the NBA is considering that; I have no comment on the 4 point shot:
    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10517078/nba-discussed-bigger-court-4-point-shot
Logistically it would have to be a top down experiment; start with the NBA and if it works, expand it to D1 college basketball and it probably doesn’t need to go any further than that.

If Donovan had pulled the trigger and gone to Cleveland he’d never have to actually coach again:

I don’t understand recycling Capel so soon (at least not at a school in a power 5 conference). Not very impressive sans Blake Griffin.

I purposely fell asleep in my chair right after tip hoping to wake up with about 10-15 minutes to go. My plan worked perfectly except when I woke up and saw we were down 12 I couldn’t bear keeping myself awake through another loss knowing it would be well after 1 before I was able to get back to sleep.

I watched the last 5 minutes during my lunch break, and I couldn’t help but wonder, what does LSU’s coach say to his players after that game? I mean, that is an epic choke job; can’t imagine what kind of positive spin you can put on that as a coach.

I didn’t see a tourney open thread, and I wasn’t sure where to post this so if it needs to be moved somewhere else, feel free to do so.

Some will enjoy this article for the barbs thrown at our friends down the road; others will take be turned off at the swipe of BJD’s “shadow pack”. I just thought it was all-around good muckraking fun. For those unfamiliar with Phil Mushnick, he is to trolling as Gregg Doyle is to…well…trolling.

Who are you people taking naps in the middle of the day on a Tuesday. Do you have a geriatric nurse bringing you butterscotch pudding too? I kid, I kid. I actually just crawled out from under my desk from my after lunch nap too.

With most trivia questions like this, it’s further back than you would have initially assumed. I’ll say Julius Hodge.

I’d take Doris Burke over 2/3 of these guys, especially Doug Gottlieb. I can see keeping him around as a studio analyst, but not as a sideline analyst. What a douche.

Speaking of rule changes, I’m curious what you guys think about revising the way teams/individuals are penalized for fouls. I’ve always hated how players can be disqualified for fouls. I propose doing away with fouling out of a game. In contrast, when a player reaches 4 or 5 or 6 (whatever number) the fouled team gets an extra free throw; three instead of two if in the double bonus or if not they get 1 FT plus the one and one. Or give the fouled player one FT and let the team retain their possession.
Another alternative might be to give all players an extra foul with each OT, i.e. a player who fouled out in regulation would be permitted to play the OT until he committed his sixth foul.

“Quick shots tend to stand out in our minds, but we don’t shoot an abnormally large number of them”
Xphoenix, you’re right. The quick shots all came after the flagrant foul. We had the ball 9 times for a total of 80 seconds after the flagrant.

I think the flagrant foul was with between 2 and 3 minutes remaining.

We lost the game because we play undisciplined and took way too many contested shots early in the shot clock. Really curious what the time of possession was last night, but UVA just works the ball around so well trying to get open looks (which they did get, they just couldn’t hit them). Only when they are unable to get an open look and the shot clock is running down do they take contested jump shots.

Is it just me or does Anya just look lost when he’s on the floor. Just standing around acting like he wants to set a pick for someone, but doesn’t know where he should be on the floor. I can remember more than once he would look at one of his teammates, palms turned up with a “where am I supposed to be; what am I supposed to do” look on his face. He also got lost a few times on defense and gave up uncontested shots or layups.

Regarding WP76’s poll, I want to meet the two people who answered they do not care about team success and only want to be validated on internet message boards. I want to buy those two people a beer because they are the only two honest people on this blog.
As others have said before me, we are now reduced to gallows humor.

Seth Davis is to Greg Doyle as Magic Johnson is to Larry Bird. They are both the best at their chosen calling; that calling being complete tools.

“How can you stand to watch UVA play?”
“UVa is as heady and disciplined team as they come.”

Yeah, I don’t get the negativity aimed at UVA from some of the posters here. Their brand of basketball is so much better to me than Duke or UNC’s. Folks bitch about basketball evolving into nothing but kids trying to make highlights and then bitch about UVA’s style. I’ll take Billy Hoyle any day of the week over Sydney Dean. I’d rather look bad and win than look good and lose.

They are so good at taking care of the ball and seem to never make the boneheaded, scratch your head turnovers you see from even well coached teams.

I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I would think the 5 on offense, 5 on defense would be unrealistic based simply on logistics (especially in the first half of the century); as in it would be difficult to get enough girls to field teams especially in rural areas (most counties had more community high schools than now and all the schools were segregated).
Oh, and my only experience with organized basketball was that I played JV basketball at a private school in rural NC in the 80s. The JV girls coach asked a couple of us guys to help with some 5 on a 5 drills/scrimmage since he had some girls out with the flu. I volunteered and practiced with them for about 20-30 minutes. It was the roughest form of basketball I have been involved in.

“It is no longer about playing defense with your feet but clutching and grabbing.” – I agree, and this is the result of officials not enforcing palming and the evolution of the crossover and blow by. Can’t complain about one without complaining about the other.
“Pair this with the poor free throw shooting…” – college teams have averaged around 70% from the FT line since 1960. That is an acceptable % to me.
Players are longer, faster and more athletic than they were 20-30 years ago when I was most interested in college basketball. The only way for the game to resemble anything close to that is to change the dimensions of the court so that the spacing returns to something comparable to how Naismith intended. Obviously that will never happen.

I’m with you BotB. I thought it was a well-coached and well played rivalry game. There was some inconsistent officiating, but not enough to get me overly bent out of shape. The last foul on Anya produced some mumbled expletives.

The coaching lapse that stood out to me (and I think it was pointed out in the game thread) was why Turner wasn’t subbed out while we were shooting FTs with <5 seconds to go. If you don’t force a TO on the inbound you know you have to foul the first guy to get the ball. Why not make a defensive sub with Lee and while they are shooting FTs sub Turner back in? I guess the argument could be made that if we force a TO our best 3P shooter is on the bench, but that’s a pretty low probability. Overall it’s a pretty small criticism of the coach.

Decisively beating Duke and taking UNC to the wire has shown me we can play with anyone. Keeping the guys up and focused for the next two road games will be important. Miami scares me. I know they’ve lost some head scratchers, but they were fearless and aggressive against Duke in Cameron. Speaking of which, how far has that “home court advantage” fallen in the past few years? It doesn’t come across as nearly as intimidating as it did in the 80s-00s.

Looks like we were pretty “average” in most of the categories both in conference and overall.

Generally speaking we beat the lesser teams (<48) and lost to the better teams (>48). With the benefit of hindsight we see just how difficult our ACC schedule was. At the time I was very disappointed in the BC game since I actually watched the game in person (at least until the sky opened up) which is a rarity for me, but as others have pointed out that game was all about us being on the short end of bad matchups. Finishing off the season strong has softened my view of coach Dorean.

Are let down losses exclusively NCSU’s MO? I think it is safe to say let down losses following a big win (i.e. an unranked team beating a top 10 team) are fairly common for every coach/program that is not considered one of the elite. I remember a loss @ Maryland after a big win against Duke and a loss @ UVA after a big win over UNC; hindsight being what it is I wouldn’t consider those WTF losses. I agree with JG, you don’t need a great motivator to get you ready for your biggest rival. As JH said, a validation win over UNC will be another positive step in the program’s evolution.

“Hope that is not the end of Peyton’s career as he has been a joy to watch”
I’m kindda hoping he does retire. I’ve been a huge fan of Manning’s dating back to his days at Tennessee and I’d hate to see him struggle through another year if his body and physical abilities have declined so far that he can’t be really competitive.

If you look at his splits, he had a pretty significant decline in the second half of the season. Not a big drop off in Y/A or completion percentage but the TD:Int ratio went from 5:1 to 1.5:1. Could be a sign of his body not being able to answer the bell.

I’m really curious what BJD thought of the booing during the game. Was it directed at Peyton, the coaches, the team or the overall situation?

And oh yeah, Aaron Rodgers is un-freakin’-believable.
