I understand…but why call the slow-developing rollout?
Classof89Participantlame blocking by #48
Classof89Participantdoes look like we are wearing down their D a little…but we have to finish…
Classof89ParticipantClearly, they’ve figured out something about VT’s d-line..
Classof89ParticipantRight–you run the low percentage roll-out because you have something special for 4th an 2…Fake FG maybe? And then #$%^ Bambard gets another delay. I thought the Heisman pose was cute at first…now it just irritates me.
Classof89ParticipantTHough I hate to agree with Mack Brown, I thought for sure they were setting up something else (play action, some kind of misdirection)….but evidently they were not. I’ve never met Canada or seen him speak. Is he not the sharpest knife in the drawer?
Classof89ParticipantWe just knocked Motley out of the game. AFter that awful UNC game in Charlotte, we know 3rd string QBs are the kiss of death for us…
Classof89ParticipantTHe playcalling continues to boggle my mind…Seven straight runs, and then a rollout pass on 3rd and 2? WTF?? And what good does a field goal do when you are downn 11?
Classof89Participant^^
first ACC swim trophy since Easterling retired. We won 24 ACC championships from 1953 to 1992, and then zippo in the next 23 years until now. Congrats to Coach Holloway and his staff (particularly since Holloway, though a State alum, graduated almost a decade after Coach Easterling and his championship tradition retired…)Classof89ParticipantIs it just me being grumpy, or is this the thing you used to do AFTER Doeren retires 15 years from now with a record of 14-1 vs. UNC? Seems to me to be a reflection of our instant gratification culture. He beats the Heels once and we put up a plaque like he’s some sort of guru. Sort of silly to do it in year 2. After all, we did finish 8-5, and midseason, the consensus seemed to be that Doeren was in the middle of a steep learning curve in terms of on-field and game management decisions. Sure that record is a big improvement, but lets put it in perspective–it’s still not relevant nationally. If we proceed to lose the next five years vs. UNC (God forbid), I think this is one plaque that (like the abominable and plagiarized “Our State” campaign) is quietly dismantled and thrown in the dumpster…
Classof89ParticipantLots of folks down on Cat, but I think Lacey was gassed the last 8 minutes against FSU because of having to take more of the PG duties, and that was one reason for our struggling in 2nd half (and I think Cat’s absence was one reason for Turner’s foul trouble). Cat’s role right now is not to have an impressive stat line in terms of scoring or rebounding. It’s to have as few turnovers as possible, make the offense run smoothly, and use his quickness primarily on defense. Others have the primary scoring and rebounding roles.
Classof89ParticipantI’m not as much of a number cruncher as some of you, but I’ve been watching State since the mid-70s. My eyeball assessment on this team is that it seems to be coming together very well. Was impressed by how they overcame an absolutely horrendous 2nd half at FSU to pull out a win. Good teams win games in which they play dreadfully. I don’t see any team at all remaining on the schedule that is “untouchable” if we play like we did against Duke (and I think it is very likely we will play that well several more times this year–that Duke win, IMO was not flukey like some of our wins vs. ACC elite in the past featuring 10-3 pointers by the likes of Scott Wood and CC Harrison). I see less chance of a bad loss against the really bad ACC teams, because we go at least 8 or 9 deep with players that can come in and have a huge contribution type of game (like Anya’s 14 pt. performance against Duke), so less worries when one of the starters is having a terrible performance.

Students Respond #69480Classof89ParticipantBoy, Technician staff must have changed from the days when I was on staff (late 80s–with Tim Peeler, et al). Doing the Daily Tar Hell was the highlight of the year. The current staff appear to be WAY too serious (or seriously lacking in creativity…)

didn’t mention Holt because I figure everyone knows that name. I had forgotten about Naz…thanks for the reminder. IMO, TOB’s primary failing as a recruiter (yeah, I know that is sort of like trying to identify the worst problem with UNC’s academic support program) was the complete failure to recruit blue chip WRs, thus breaking a string that was pretty much unbroken going back to the Kiffin/Reid days of always having one really good WR in the program.12/03/2014 at 10:41 AM in reply to: Football Recruiting: Wrapping Up #Pack15 and a quick look at #Pack16 #64099Classof89ParticipantGiven we already have Gallaspie, is the general consensus that we will get either Frasier or Hines, but not both? If somehow we signed all three, would one of them be used at TE or WR? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have all of them, but we seem to have an embarrassment of riches at running back. However, we really haven’t had an elite game breaking Wide Receiver since Koren Robinson or Jerricho Cotchery, which is a pretty sad state of affairs IMO, given the great tradition of Wolfpack NFL WRs going back to Mike Quick. (if the OP is a student at State, he probably wasn’t even alive when Quick wore the Red and White, but google him, as well as Danny Peebles and Haywood Jeffires.
Classof89ParticipantIt is never a good season when your top OOC win is a Sun Belt team, no matter how good they were in the Sun Belt. I refuse to get excited about Georgia Friggin Southern.
Classof89Participanttoday was a first for me–first game at Carter Finley when the opposing team never punted once. They could have left the guy in Atlanta. Complete domination. we have a long way to go on defense…
I truly believe GaT could have run that @#$% toss sweep 100 times in a row, and we still couldn’t have stopped it for less than 5 yards a single time.
Classof89Participant^^
what is Pomeroy ranking based on in preseason, when noone has played each other? Shocked that Richmond would be ranked above us in any sort of power ranking, when you look at the talent level each program is putting on the court? Does Richmond have a couple of transfers or dropouts from Power 5 Conference programs this year? And I didn’t say that I thought Purdue would be a cakewalk; only that it will help us discern whether we will be any sort of threat to finish in top half of ACC.
You have identified the toughest five games in presason, however. If we stumble to four or five losses in those and the other games prior to ACC play, that will tell me not to expect much more than about 6-12 or 5-13 in the ACC.
Classof89ParticipantI saw the GaTech/UNC game. They have an amazing offense. If they have zero turnovers on Saturday, we have zero chance of an upset. Maybe they will see red jerseys and think we are Georgia (they are 1-12 vs. Georgia since 2001)!!
Classof89ParticipantLike the way the schedule ramps up gradually. We have six patsies at PNC to start, and then two games vs. middling Power 5 opponents (Purdue, picked 11th of 14 in Big 10, and Wake). We sweep those two games, and avoid early stumble a la NC Central last year, and I might start to get a little excited. BTW, I don’t see an NC Central caliber in those first six, but honestly, haven’t done any research, and I guess last year no one knew they had an experienced senior laden team until they beat us and everyone started noticing them.
Next “name” game is vs. Tennessee (picked in Wake Forest territory in SEC preseason–13th of 14).
The real indicator game for me this fall will be the Dec. 20 matchup with West Virginia in New York. They, like us are predicted to be also-ran in their conference (tied for 6th of 10 in preseason Big 12 poll).
Wake me up if we are 13-0 when Cincinnati comes to town on New Year’s Eve-Eve. A team that wants to contend for top 4 in the ACC and a national ranking should have no problem reaching that mark, given the fact there isn’t an unwinnable game in the entire set of 13. Until then, breathless preseason predictions that we will be better than expected won’t do a thing for me.
Classof89ParticipantHonestly, I’m glad we are readapting the building to new athletic uses instead of just taking a wrecking ball to it, as has happened to many old on-campus facilities. Hard to believe the place is 65 years old this year.
Classof89ParticipantAbsolutely astounding to me that we are in the midst of a historic conference losing streak, and yet our attendence vs. capacity is still 4th in the ACC (I assume we trail only FSU, Clemson, and VaTech, but didn’t look up). We truly have one of the most dedicated and loyal fan bases in the world. I was in Chapel Hill Saturday night for the GaTech game, and was astounded by the amount of aluminum I could see in that stadium for a pivotal nationally televised game. We show up in much greater numbers for a far inferior product.
Classof89ParticipantGood grief, people act like Florida State is the second coming of Lombardi’s Packers. Not saying we are going to win, but stranger things have happened in college football.
Classof89Participant^^
Other nice thing about Syracuse as a road opponent is that I think, like USF, their fan support has really fallen off in the last 10 years with their disappointing results. Bet it’s not anywhere near as loud in their as it was when that MOC team won on the surprise 2-pt. conversion in the season opener back in the day (which I think was our last trip there…). Plus the debacle at home last year was one of the “worst of the worst”, and I hope the players remember.Classof89ParticipantWhat this game confirmed for me is that the ODU and GSU offenses are among the top third of the teams we will face this year. Defense made USF look horrific.
