I have no problem with Keatts, but only IF we are now a school that is willing to pull the plug after year 3. In this day and age of one and done, there is absolutely no reason to keep a bad coach around as long as we did Lowe and Gottfried. By year three, it will be abundantly clear if Keatts is up to the job. In 1983, Coach K’s third season, sure they had a terrible record…BUT…he also had the FANTASTIC recruiting class in hand. As ESPN said in a retrospective a few years back:
“…Krzyzewski’s six-member class in 1982 that included Johnny Dawkins, Mark Alarie, David Henderson and Jay Bilas. They accomplished many of Coach K’s “firsts,” including their run to the 1986 Final Four. Without them, Krzyzewski’s tenure could have ended in an early and unceremonious exit from Durham, North Carolina.”
Duke fans knew the minute those 1982 HS seniors hit campus. ANd likewise, we will know as well by year 3. No need anymore to go through years 4, 5, and 6 of handwringing and growing realization a guy doesn’t have a clue. So in that sense, and the hope Yow’s replacement will be someone who isn’t afraid to pull the plug, I’m more than happy to give Keatts a chance. I know for darn sure he is WAY better than either of the last two hires.

If we’re going to spend $2 million for a buyout in order to throw $4 million more at LSU’s sloppy seconds, I’d rather just wait a year and get the 2017 SEC castoff. No need to spend that sort of dough for a caliber of candidate that will be available every year. South Carolina getting Holtz and then Spurrier transformed their program, but look how they’ve sunk back to the middle in just a few seasons. I think we missed with Doeren (the Tom Reed of the 21st century), but I think there are mid-major success stories out there who would do a good job here. I was in school for Sheridan’s glorious first season in 1986. It was wonderful to behold how most of the same players who had gone 3-8 the year before under Reed’s gloomy reign played with confidence and sound fundamentals to the tune of 8-2-1 and a bogus VaTech player injury from a nine win season (which really meant something in the era of 11 game seasons).

Given DD has a five million plus buyout, he’d be a complete idiot to resign…Unless a heretofore unknown donor steps up with said $5 million, plus $5 million more to sweeten the deal for the next guy, I don’t see it happening. We will have to endure recruiting going in the crapper again, and then another 5+ year rebuild. Rinse. Repeat.

Troll, I can’t imagine there is enough polish left for this titanic turd. I wasn’t on the fence about Doeren; I fully expected that he would coach out his contract and then hit the road. You can’t lose a game like this one and keep your job. In the seven wins Doeren has earned in four years (excluding the 35-7 pummeling of the Asterisk in Kenan), he’s needed the other team to make significant mistakes in order for his teams to win. He needed a late turnover from WFU and a hurricane against ND to earn his only decent home wins in his four-year stint. A poster on TOS mentioned Tom Reed, whom I barely remember as Sheridan is the first coach who my memory can recall, and Doeren might be every bit as bad as Reed. His record is very damn close.

DD also shares Reeds unfortunate habit of blaming others for his teams poor performances, as Luke DeCock documented in his column yesterday…

Like Doeren or hate him, it is apparent that the death spiral has begun. His comments after game (accurately skewered by Luke DeCock in yesterday’s N&O) remind me of Tom Reed, who used to throw his team under the bus in post-bad loss comments (Reed lost at home to pre-Cutclife Duke as the notable “we are going to fire this guy” loss). The egg-laying at home on a beautiful Homecoming Day also reminded me of TOB’s dreadful loss to an awful Virginia team that more or less sealed his fate. It isn’t going to happen this year, but another losing record in the ACC next year, and DD’s going to get the Mike O’ Cain Hardees breakfast biscuit visit treatment (that’s an obscure MAF reference).

I say this because if our stadium is a proxy for our baseball budget (and I don’t really know), it would suggest we’re punching above our weight. I don’t think Avent is perfect but I’m fine with the results given what we are seemingly paying.

But there’s a difference between capital funds and operating funds, right? I think Yow has said pretty of times that her philosophy has been to give the program what they need to win (full scholarship allotments, recruiting and travel $$, asst. coach salaries) before putting a higher level of expectations. If indeed the lack of capital investment is also indicative of low operating budget as you say, then that would probably explain why she didn’t fire him the day after the regional ended.

I’d like to see a change, but not if the $$ isn’t there to upgrade. If someone is willing to write the check for the buyout and a coach worthy of an upgraded base salary, then by all means pull the plug. If not, well, I guess I agree that we could do a lot worse. (Sendek looked a lot better to many of us by year 3 or 4 of Sidney Lowe).

wonder where we sit in ACC if you divide ticket revenues by wins? We have to get less bang for the buck than any other fanbase in the ACC. I still haven’t completely lost faith in Doeren, but two ACC home wins in three years just makes his program look worse to the donors than it really is…

i haven’t seen the fanbase this divided over a coach since Les Robinson (urban legend is that he decided to resign after some well connected donor sent him a picture of two wolves fighting). Sure there are always the Bob Kennels of the world, the suckups who support any incumbent, but with respect to Avent, some people really seem to love him, others are convinced (bizarrelly) that we can’t do any better in baseball until we install a roof over the stands at Doak so what’s the use of firing Avent, and others (like me) look at the bright young minds in Clemson, Louisville, and Boston College and think “we can do better” Does he love NC State? No doubt. So did Les, Sidney Lowe, and Amato. I’d hate to see him unceremoniously tossed out on his ass, but can’t we give him a window office in Case for a few years and put him in charge of something less important than the baseball program?

Here’s another guy that we are looking at (along with WFU):

Manning reportedly also is eyeing Ronnie Johnson. The Houston player, who comes by way of two seasons at Purdue, has earned his degree and will be eligible to compete immediately. He put up 9.4 points and 2.9 assists for Kelvin Sampson last season but also is being pursued by ACC rival NC State.

Is it just me, or are we the basketball recruiting equivalent of the homeless dude rooting through the dumpsters behind restaurant row, hoping to find something really good in the trash?

yeah, I remember how excited people were about the Tennessee and LSU home and homes, until they were bought out. Heck, even Navy bought out a return to Carter-Finley.

This thread is amusing and insightful as to how various people’s brains process and store memories, and how stuff gets lumped together after the fact. Texpack is referring to a “48 Hours” report that aired in March of 1988, just as all the stuff was breaking on Valvano’s program. review of program

On subject of Avent’s screwy lineup choices, can someone explain to me why Willard is starting some games in outfield with a .188 batting average? Its not like we need his defense in left field…

On another note, I’d appreciate you baseball insider’s opinion on Avent’s chances of being back in 2017 if the BC series results hold up and we go something like 10-20 or 12-18 this year in ACC (not impossible, if you look at our road series). It’s pretty obvious he doesn’t have a warm relationship with Yow, but, on the other hand, he seems to have a LOT of support from the good old boy network as a Pack alum and eastern NC native. I dislike Avent, but I feel pessimistic given what’s going on in the revenue sports that Yow feels like she’d be in a position to pull the plug on a 20 year coach. Baseball is a little higher profile than Mens soccer, the last sport where she put an old timer with some past success out to pasture.

Doak Field is an example of what happens when NC State tried a “go it alone” approach for facility upgrades. Fact is, we have a notoriously cheap fanbase that likes to scream a lot, but doesn’t back it up with money. If you look at our Wolfpack Club donor pyramid, the vast majority of our donors are in the $50-$500 range, and not nearly enough folks able to write $1 million checks. If we tried to build our own facility on campus, we’d maybe end up with something about the size of Minges Coliseum at ECU, but a little nicer. I don’t even think we’d have the fanbase support to build a modern arena with the seating capacity of Reynolds (12,400). Given that our season ticket revenue from PNC is based on ticket sales several thousand bigger than 12,400, why do we keep having this discussion? When we have a team/program that isn’t the suck, PNC could provide a daunting home court advantage. I was in that arena for one of the Canes Eastern Conference Final games against the Maple Leafs in 2002, and the place was so loud that the sound felt like a blanket enveloping you. Gottfried builds a top 10 program, and you will be amazed how loud PNC becomes.

We foul a 3 PT shooter with 11secs. to go for Martin’s 3rd foul. Their guy hits all 3 FTs. Our season in a nutshell or what?

Ahhh, Curtis Marshall. One year he punched a plate glass window and was out for the season…IIRC, our guard play actually improved that year…He was the player who taught me the lesson that “Player of the Year” in your state is not very meaningful if your sport is basketball and the state is Nebraska…

I suggest ya’ll start following the womens team. Coach Moore is the real deal, and I think he’s building a program that is going to be in the top four in ACC in next two years. They are very young and thin at PG, but he’s managed to coach them to a 3-1 start in ACC play, with a huge game this week at Duke (a team that is ranked 18th nationally, but has been somewhat erratic this year).

Yow has yet to fire a coach she hired, right? After watching this team play, I’m still thinking I must have dozed off and was dreaming when I heard Gott tell the Raleigh Sports Club last month that this team could be the best defensive team he’s had….

I see no sign that Jalen will have any by anyone to throw to. I hope next year we will have some run plays out of pass formations and pass plays out of run formation too, because right now we are painfully obvious on offense.

They have a stable of big athletic wide receivers and linebackers that we simply lack in our program and it was painfully obvious today.

A poor effort from top to bottom today. Another in a long string of them in Carter Finley over the last three years. What is it about the home crowd atmosphere that makes our staff and players tighten up?
