Vawolf – yes. We didn’t start out with a lack of depth, Gottfried just didn’t play a lot of guys. We had 4 returning starters…more than 80% of our scoring and rebounding. We brought in 3 McDonald’s all American’s.
I would tell you that if any program brings back 4 returning starters from a sweet 16 squad and adds 3 McDonald’s aa’s they will likely be ranked in the top 10….unless you think the coach is retarded.
It certainly wasn’t a stretch to believe that we would be higher than an 8 or 9 seed. We underachieved last year by any measure and we may very well again do so this year. (Let’s see if any other team misses the tourney with 3 MCD aa’s.)
choppack1ParticipantI love how people make contrarian arguments on one hand we’re told that last year we are overratedin spite of returningover 80 percentabout our scoringfrom a sweet 16 team.
this yearin spite of having to McDonald’s All Americans and plenty of talent, we aren’t underachieving again. I guess we can’t hope to compete with the nc centrals of the world.
choppack1ParticipantLook, its too early to give up on the Gottfried era right now. However, I think what concerns some of us is that in year 3 we are seeing the problems that sunk the ship in Alabama.
choppack1ParticipantGray – I think you may be right. Pitt is showing how it is done. Defend, rebound and get out in transition.
Gott desperately needs to improve d. Otherwise, I don’t see us having the success we have had the last 2 years.
choppack1ParticipantWulfPacker a lot of teams will shoot 80 percent if they are shooting layups and wide open threes
choppack1ParticipantI will say this. I love guys gott brought in with this class.
choppack1ParticipantDefense is absolutely awful in the 2nd half. Sadly, that is not a surprise.
We are as good as cat and warren are playing. We don’t execute well enough defensively to have much of hope.
choppack1ParticipantThis is a story because she has a rocking body.
choppack1ParticipantThis doesn’t mean I don’t think we don’t have a shot at the tourney – we do.
Oh yeah, regarding magic numbers I would say if we win 11 of our next 19 we are likely in. This means even if we went 0-7 against the rest of the account, we would have gone 11-1 vs rest of acc which would give us a solid RPI.
choppack1ParticipantWhiteshoes – I agree. After the game Saturday I tried to post that the key to this team was improvement from barber. We simply have not rebounded and avoided silly fouls consistently enough in the Gott era to expect anything else.
Our team is talented and athletic enough. We take care of the ball good enough…. but we’ll likely give up too many easy points to do much unless this team improves significantly.
choppack1ParticipantThis analysis isn’t premature. The season is more than 1/3rd over. It is pretty set in stone now what we have to do to make an at large bid likely. One thing about the RPI and conference, I wouldn’t expect that our entire conference’s RPI ranking will change much. In essence, everyone is swimming in the same fishtanks now so the number of slots is somewhat predetermined (I would think)…this doesn’t mean that the acc can’t get all the “in” and “bubble” teams and US in, it just means you won’t see 8 teams from the conference getting in
choppack1ParticipantNo – it wouldn’t have. However, the drag is that you have to play and beat those teams….and you have to avoid losing to talented teams that won’t make the tourney.
I would love to see the math on what the UNCG road did vs a home loss to Missouri.
choppack1ParticipantSince we have an 18 game schedule and the tournament, I would set our magic # at 11 wins in our next 19 conference games. That record would probably give us enough quality wins combined with a minimum amount of head scratching losses and would give us an RPI in the 50s (I suspect) on selection Sunday. If we hit 12 we are a lock. With 13, we could have a decent seed.
In general, I loathe the RPI. I think its lazy and is specifically designed to benefit mid-majors. I prefer pomeroy’s rating
choppack1ParticipantHope so go wolves.
choppack1ParticipantVt – remember, in gott’s first year we lost to every good team we played in the first half of the season but got some key wins down the stretch. I can see that happening with this group.
choppack1ParticipantI don’t think haith is a bad coach at all. Well, he did lose several to Sidney Lowe so there’s that.
Time will tell if this is a bump in the road or a sign of consistent problems that will cause us to miss the tourney. We had a good game plan and executed for the majority of the game.
choppack1ParticipantA lot folks were mocking frank haith’s coaching ability before this game. Yet his team won on the road, executed down the stretch and made foul shots.
So is frank haith a bad coach?
choppack1ParticipantYea…the refs made cat miss the front end of the 1 and 1….the refs made us shoot a contested 3 with 19 seconds left instead of driving for an easy bucket. The refs decided not to involve tj the last 5 minutes.
choppack1ParticipantLook…this game isn’t on cat. I am convinced he is doing everything he is asked to do as was the pg last year.
I think our guys are well-conditioned, play hard and run their stuff. I think gott is doing a solid job….hopefully, this team will continue to improve and won’t let this game be like the Clemson football game.
choppack1ParticipantHmm. So haith is the bad coach here?
choppack1ParticipantBTW…I don’t blame cat.
choppack1ParticipantCat barber showing the defense that….the pack was so well known for the last couple of years.
choppack1ParticipantKyle Washington! Come on pack!
choppack1ParticipantYea…the refs control a lot. This is why college basketball is closer to rasslin’ than an actual sport.
choppack1ParticipantWe’ve made some huge gains in RPI and Kenpom lately..we’re certainly on the right track, but if we lose this game, we won’t be taken seriously. Win it…and we’re in almost everyone’s bracketology.
