choppack1Participant
Brisset threw one horrid pass on 1st and 10 aside from that he looked pretty good. New guys look pretty good.
The mistakes I saw yesterday can’t be made on gameday but 1st team looked good. Of course that may say more about 2nd team and depth.
choppack1ParticipantCow – I didn’t say good ballplayers, BUT gott signed purvis, da thaey and Lewis…that is 3 of 4 players whom he brought here as frosh. 4 for 4 is not encouraging. It may just be a fluke though.
choppack1ParticipantAnd with our defense that is certainly possible.
Time will tell. Is it a signal there is problem here retaining good kids or is it simply a typical transfer for typical reasons.
choppack1ParticipantFunny how we expect more from kids than we do adults. As for this ending drama, does anyone really think that’s the case? Drama and churn are constant in college basketball. However, our case thus far is a bit extreme. Hopefully, things will stabilize now, but expecting that is incredibly naive.
choppack1ParticipantTry this again. 4 Four year scholarship players…no 3rd year players. Half call out coach….gott may be great 3 years 3 bids – nothing to be ashamed of. I don’t doubt what these kids are saying. Remember, great coaches aren’t always fair or other things.
choppack1ParticipantFirst off, you have to love the term “haters” – a word made up by entertainers to protect them from any kind of criticism.
Regarding Gottfried, at this point his record here in Raleigh is pretty impressive. However, he’s now lost every scholarship player that he’s recruited to nc state.
Between this issue and our consistently bad defensive rebounding, its hard to get the warm and fuzzies about the program at this time.
choppack1ParticipantNot true – gott took one of his bama teams to the elite 8.
choppack1ParticipantOK – there are more than a couple of ironies here in this thread.
1. The “early exit” in sendek’s last year was in the round of 32. As we all know, the last 2 years we’ve lost in the round of 64.
2. Regarding meltdowns….the meltdowns vs. UNC, Syracuse and then finally st Louis rival some of the sendekian collapses that caused us so much pain.
3. A lot of praises (and rightfully so) for arch and Sean….strangely enough both either played for or coached with sendek. I really have no idea what kind of relationship they have with him, but if they respect him there’s a good chance that they don’t really want to come back to Raleigh as a coach. The feelings about sendek are very mixed for me. I think he was very close to being a great coach, but he couldn’t and still can’t get out of his own way. I think he moved our program forward significantly but had 2 bosses who naturally pitted him against the fan base…and I am afraid those who had a close relationship with him won’t harbour warm feelings towards nc state.
choppack1ParticipantYogi – there is a chance that his head was on straight in the first place. Today was his best overall game since his freshman year….he doesn’t do well with a revolving door. He evidently has to “feel” the game.
Some players are like that. They have to be in a rhythm to be truly effective.
choppack1ParticipantDid I hear right that tj averages 27 when Tyler starts and 20 when he doesn’t?
Great game with lots of heroes. This is what I was hoping for when Tyler committed to us. He was the second best player on the floor tonight. Anya was awesome. Vandy is very efficient offensively, never bringing it down and flushing it. Turner did a great job defensively.
Freeman continues to impress. Just a blue collar guy who fights and seems like a great teammate.
choppack1ParticipantNever thought I would be getting pumped up about the first 4…but I am. Xavier will be a tough matchup for us.
choppack1ParticipantWe have the worst efficiency d of any team from a power conference in the tourney….oddly enough if we advance, we play the team with the worst efficiency offense.
I don’t know how Gottfried does it, but he has managed to make the tourney 3 years in a row with very mediocre defenses. This is also why I don’t see us getting much farther than bubble status unless we learn how to rebound and play d.
choppack1ParticipantWhile it was shocking it wasn’t a travesty of justice or anything. We were very close to being “in”…cal, SMU and green bay were close, but like us they didn’t do enough to feel confident on selection Sunday. We got in by beating 2 at large teams away from home in last 4 games…did those other teams do that?
Very happy for team and coaches.
choppack1ParticipantI think we know what is what right now. Our next game is in Reynolds.
choppack1ParticipantThink we are one of 1st 2 out.
choppack1ParticipantBad news. I just looked at automatic bids and there are 20 out there below the cut line. This means the top 48 teams are taken.
Having seen that I am convinced we will NOT get a bid. It sucks because the nit is irrelevant but we made our bed…
choppack1ParticipantDance card has us at the 50 spot right now…in the past the cut line has been #51. I don’t think there have been any upsets. They are talking about state right now on ESPN. All 4 of the guys said nc state should go after looking at resumes of the other bubble teams.
Not a big fan of bpi but state is 5-8 vs. Top 50 bpi teams…that is pretty impressive.
choppack1ParticipantThe dance card actually has us “in” if you look at where life e has ended last 2 years (#51)…the problem is that we have to beat a great duke team that we just don’t match up well with. If we lose to duke our RPI will drop enough to keep us out of the tourney
choppack1ParticipantI don’t think a loss vs. Duke will give us a bump. We have to win, we do and we dance.
choppack1ParticipantVa wolf – correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t dance card include the old RPI for their evaluation? If so, Pitt’s roadies don’t matter as much.
Still…enjoy the data, and thanks to vawolf I am not surprised on selection Sunday.
Regarding the bubbles, I think those days are back. Gott wins enough to keep us near it, loses too much to clear it. I don’t see that changing too much during his tenure here. Hope like hell I am wrong.
choppack1Participant1. We are not yet on the bubble.
2. Win 1st round game and beat ‘cuze we are on bubble.
3. Lose in semi’s – miss tourney
4. Win in semi’s – definitely “in” on Saturday…
5. Lose – back on bubble, totally dependent on what other bubble teams do.We are definitely setting up to be an interesting case study. Our RPI is OK going into tournament and will be close even with loss in semis, but we have had very little media attention. The cw is that we have to win the acc to get a bid, but I guarantee you of we beat Miami, cuse, and duke we will have a very good RPI.
choppack1ParticipantThe acc tournament is our last hope. To have a shot at an at-large bid we will have to advance to sunday…and will probably need to have beaten duke on Saturday to get there…so the odds are indeed very slim
choppack1ParticipantTj warren….wow. most amazing stretch I have seen in quite a while. Simply incredible. He’s also our best rebounder and defender. I hope he gets to play in the big dance.
choppack1ParticipantWhat we have consistently seen from gott’s teams is poor foul shooting, poor defensive rebounding and a lack of defensive fundamentals.
The good news is that typically his teams are effective offensively and he is a good recruiter. As a result, we can play with most teams.
The jury is still out. He had some 12-4 years in the sec @ Alabama, but aside from a final 8, had pretty pedestrian NCAA tournament appearances.
My theory is that he is not a big details guy. I have zero evidence to support this statement other than what I see on the court. The poor foul shooting, the poor fundamentals on d and lack of boxing out all scream that his teams don’t do the little things that separate good from great…
We will see. The last 2 years don’t give me the warm and fuzzies. We lose the leading scorer who is also our best defender in a likelihood.
choppack1ParticipantBill – I think its easier to argue improvement on tj’s end. Does anyone see him putting up these numbers last year? Heck, the stats show he has increased his scoring 100%. Is he technically as efficient? Nope.
But those stats don’t measure the defensive attention he’s receiving.
