Cat drove the ball several times and didn’t get a whistle. If I had the time – I would do a thorough analysis.
Having said that, just because there’s a disparity doesn’t mmean the refs aren’t calling a good game.
What would only improve the experience of fans and create a little more confidence in the system is if there some sort of transparency and obvious accountability. Perhaps if the league published a scorecard or gave schools a recourse or outlet.
I love watching golf. I love the fact that fans can see something call a PGA rules official and action is taken. I love being able to watch an athletic event that is clearly and obviously determined by the skill and luck of competitors and is not subject to the whims and biases of officials.
choppack1ParticipantMak4 – i’d argue that it does especially when a blown call that cannot be disputed ends up awarding a team an extra foul shot that could be the difference in the game. Our last 2 games our opponents have made more foul shots than we’ve attempted and I believe the game is being called differently for us than it is for them.
When we lost to Carolina I thought we deserved to lose…not so last night. I had to do my monk chants.
choppack1ParticipantIt sucks being a state fan. I feel like I have been watching the same game for the last 15 years.
choppack1ParticipantLooks like he committed and we also got a commitment from a DL prospect that originally committed to ecu.
choppack1ParticipantThis game ain’t on barber or on gott. I can’t stand Acc refs…the call against cat was beyond absurd. He played a solid game tonight. He is an acc calibre point guard and he will play better.
We have 2 guys – turner and lacy – who will take some very bad shots – they make enough of them to give them positive reinforcement. Martin had some bad fouls that bailed them out…but he’s young.
Team was tough tonight. We had some shots spin out I couldn’t believe – but the effort was there and playing a team like this was great prep for the domers.
choppack1ParticipantJigs – love the dance card. Thanks to va wolf, yoirself and others I feel more informed on the NCAA than most of the media commenting on it.
It’s sad that an nc state fan has to know the bubble so well, but that’s just our lot right now. Of course, the reality is that everyone not named uva and kentucky is on it right now…that changes with each week, and it would be nice to go into the tournament knowing we didn’t have to win 1-2 games to get bid. It would be even nicer to be playing for a top 7 bid in the tourney.
choppack1ParticipantJigs – just used his time @ nc state.
choppack1ParticipantDance card is live and we are 100% in at this point with an overall ranking of #24.
This is no doubt due to the non-conference schedule and their methodology which uses the “old” RPI. (From memory old RPI didn’t give as much weight to road games as current formula does.)
choppack1ParticipantSo. I am looking through kenpom’s #s. This – so far – is gott’s 2nd best team defensively.
And its pretty obvious that the only thing that keeps this program from being elite under Gottfried is defense. The last 3 years we have typically been one of the worst defensively of those receiving at large bids.
choppack1ParticipantOur games against the canes, domers and the cuse are huge.in addition, we can switch spots with louisville. It would be pretty cool to see this team finish in top 25 of RPI.. Giving us shot at a top 6 seed and avoiding the play-in fatigue in the tournament.
We’re a third of the way through the acc season and are a solid 4-2. We got to this point by beating a then top-5 RPI team, losing to one on the road, beating 2 doormats (1 on the road one at home) beating a bubble team and losing to a top 15 RPI team @ home.75% winning percentage at home and 50% on the road (both of which are impossible with an 18 game schedule) will have us between 10-8 and 12-6. The difference between those 2 records is sleeping soundly on the eve of selection Sunday and worrying about the bubble. Keep in mind, just to reach that 10-8 mark we’ll have to go 6-6 the last 2/3 of the season.
Translation: without a nice winning streak and dominance over those not in the hunt, we’ll be fighting tooth and nail for that real estate.
choppack1ParticipantThat game was frustrating on the radio…can’t imagine watching that 2nd half. Still team pulled together and held on. No such thing as a bad conference road win.
Hopefully all the cat critics saw his value today but I kind of doubt it.
choppack1ParticipantTeam really fought tonight. IMHO -,that sorry zone and allowing Paige to get good looks on 3s was the difference. The team that defended better won tonight. The refs – after screwing us – kept us alive for a 3 minute stretch…we made foul shots and turned the corner.
Less defensive brain farts and we win that game. This team – more than any that gott has had – will have to be good to very good defensively for us too win. Tonight we were not good defensively overall… And that’s why we lost.
choppack1ParticipantI would really like to launch into full-blown “blame the refs” mode but I think this deficit is just as much a result of our refusal to figure out Paige is a pretty damn good 3 point shooter and to figure out defensive rebounding is important.
choppack1ParticipantTob’s teams were strong in this area. What is very impressive to me is that he has done this with a young team. To do the “don’t beat yourself” stuff so well for a young team bodes well for the future.
choppack1ParticipantGreat game today. When we get our inside guys involved we can play with anyone.
Great gameplan and execution today.
Channeling my inner-Bill the team “GOTT” the message he delivered vs. Cincy. Hopefully ship has been righted and we are off the bad side of the bubble to stay!
choppack1ParticipantWhat is pathetic is that it took this incident to fire him AND he is considered a “good” official. I think one thing professional and sports should try to do is get away from officials incorrectly impacting outcomes as much as possible. Technology should soon be at a point where this is possible. (Its certainly possible in cases of out of bounds calls.)
Regardless basketball officiating is horrible and officials are a big part of acc power structure.
choppack1ParticipantBill – I can’t really disagree with that statement.
Ilian Emtimov’s and Julius Hodge’s are pretty rare. Like you said, the big issue is whether you can take kids who are smart – and turn them into high IQ ballers.
UVa is doing it right now. The initial returns here are and in Gott’s work @ Bama are worrisome – but he deserves time. Different league – different opponents.
I’d also say discipline is a huge component. And while I’ve seen pretty good effort the last 2 years – the discipline has been another story. Again – this can improve – so really, it’s an academic exercise. We’ll look around year 5 and see where we are. I have no clue which direction we’re headed or where we’ll be….I can see it all going any of 3 ways.
choppack1ParticipantGott did have 2 season of 12-4…that ain’t bad a’tall.
I said in another post, sooner or later, he’ll slide off the bubble, the big question is which way.
Interesting thing about Bennett at WSU – his first season was his best. The shine on that diamond had kind of faded. Granted – Gott has a much longer track record – but I’m glad to see a consensus.
I think we all like easy choices…It would be nice to have an “easy decision” after year 5 in the positive.
I also think it’s pretty difficult to find the kind of athlete that’s going to succeed in this conference. If you look at Sendek’s first few classes – they were much more athletic than what he put on the court his last 5 years. He went for a smarter basketball player – and got on the right side of the bubble and conference.
I think Gott’s kids are plenty smart (based on interviews) – but basketball IQ – that’s another thing…and that requires ALOT of scouting.
choppack1ParticipantCan we all agree that with the results gott has had so far he’s at least earned a 5th year?
That said, his teams do play a frustrating brand of basketball.. But I am not sure there is any other kind when you gravitate to the bubble every year.
It did take Bennett 5 years to complete his total turnaround @ uva. This of course doesn’t mean gott will turn the corner – only that he could and deserves a shot to try.
choppack1ParticipantI thought we played pretty good d tonight. But I never thought uva would kill us on offensive boards but then again we pretty much have a sign that says “we don’t box out or do end help d well.”
Still – I think its encouraging that our d played well enough for us to get the “w”. It was horrendous shot selection that killed us….its low IQ basketball and it is always manifesting itself in one lopsided stat or another.
However, that was not an nit team or attitude I saw wearing the “s” tonight so that’s a good sign.
choppack1ParticipantThe one thing that should give us hope is that is that it’s obvious that gott learned about the perils of mediocre scheduling so its quite possible he’s realized the only reason his teams haven’t been top 25 his first 3 years is because of poor defensive rebounding and mediocre d.
It certainly sounds like it based on his comments.
choppack1ParticipantI think a big key for this team is not settling for jumpers…part of the reason Abu is seeing more time is because he’s much more aggressive offensively.
I think when you see our big guys contribute offensively turner will be getting better looks and it probably means cat and lacy are driving more.
It will be very interesting to see how we do vs. Uva. We can hang with them athletically and they don’t hit the offensive boards too hard. If they don’t break our d down too bad we can hang with them and have a shot at the upset.
choppack1ParticipantI am not sure if our RPI will improve if we lose the next 3 games…you are punished pretty severely for home losses.
That said, it would be nice not to test that statement!
choppack1ParticipantIt depends. If cat has shown he isn’t capable of driving the ball in those situations that’s one thing…if he’s not comfortable that’s another.
I don’t know. In general, I think its better to push the tempo and I have hard time believing that a McDonald’s all American guard isn’t capable. But I am not at practice either.
I don’t have access to analytics coach may have either. So, its entirely possible coach gott is making a data driven decision.
choppack1ParticipantBill – I think it’s better for both cat’s development and the team if we are pushing tempo.
I do look for cat to take a big leap next year too. He’s tough and improving.
Will be fun to see how we play against uva.
Loved the effort and attackinng from Cody today. That’s exactly what I want to see from barber. Realize that if one guy has you in the open court you will likely get no better look in the half court and are more likely to get fouled.
