Well – it’s one of the NCAA’s tools to measure success. One could argue it’s the backbone on which all criteria are based…. RPI determines your quality wins, SOS and your ranking… And there’s definitely a correlation to seeding.
I have always thought it’s a simplistic tool (since it doesn’t take into account margin of victory or defeat). I think the bigger flaw is that it over-values road wins…I haven’t seen the actual hard numbers but I suspect a “road” win over a team ranked between 150-250 may be worth more than a home win over 40-85…I would like to see those numbers.
However, the bottom line is that everyone knows this “tool” is used, so if you don’t factor it in when creating your ooc schedule.. You’re a fool or Seth Greenberg.
choppack1ParticipantJigs – as always great stuff. Really liked the differentiator info.
It highlights why some of us were so down in the dumps. What I do love about gott’s last 2 teams is that they take care of the ball. I’d say, defensive positioning is key for us…that’s, when fouls, offensive rebounds and wide-ass open 3s kill us.
choppack1ParticipantAs always vawolf – great stuff.
Is my memory correct? Didn’t you say the bubble was weak last year? Then again, when it seems like the top tier has 3-4 losses and the bubble has 8-10, I imagine that’s a quick drop to the deep end.
Very interesting and encouraging that a fellow bubbler moved up so high with a bubble win…because we can use that same movement.
We’re a wacky team – only cincy has dominated us start to finish – against everyone else, sometime under 10 minutes left it was a ball game.
Also really interesting to see the difference the home/away factor makes. Our “old” RPI is 33 or something, “new” RPI is 49.
choppack1ParticipantYea – I see those black jerseys and I develop a tick. Painful losses in that color (in basketball).,, hell, we should probably give gott an extension based on that alone. (Halfway serious)
choppack1ParticipantWas this the first victory of signicance in the black uniforms?
choppack1ParticipantGott rec recruits well, schedules well and if you are one of the guys playing – appears to be a players coach. I’d say the reason this team is on the bubble right now is the same reason we’ve been on the bubble 3 of his 4 years…we have a couple of bad losses ooc, and we are 1-2 close calls away from being solidly in. Of course, we are also a couple of “bad breaks” away from being solidly out.
Like others have said – we kind of know we’ll be “on the bubble” most seasons with gott as our coach – if we are lucky. Hopefully this time next year we’ll be in the top 25 and won’t need to go 4-1 in our last 5 conference games to feel confident about selection Sunday.
choppack1ParticipantTeX – define margin of error. If we go 4-1 we’re in. 3-2, it will come down tournament.
choppack1ParticipantThe few times I watched Louisville play I wasn’t impressed with their offense. However, they are an incredibly tough team. That we went head to head with them on the road and came out with a “w” is huge.
Hopefully, this is a season defining win. We can beat every team we play if we play smart and smart.
And major props to cat. And major props to gott for sticking with him.
choppack1ParticipantI love that the team is driving to the basket. Turner needed the break his knees were bothering him. What was up with Washington?
choppack1ParticipantYep. Great heart by the team. Great job by the staff. Apparently, I am not allowed to watch these games. When I give up we play well, that factor is doubled when I watch less than half a game.
choppack1ParticipantI am not sure if the herb we had the last 5 years won’t end up being better than gott..but there is no question that he has started out better. The big question in my mind is did he peak in the first season and a half?
I am sure he took the job rested and recharged but big time coaching is incredibly stressful snd i can see how the last 60 games would have dulled the enthusiam and confidence. Regardless of what happens on the court this year – he’s earned year 5. However, I am seeing similarities to another coach we hired with extensive d1 experience.
As colin cowherd was saying yesterday – people tell you who they are. The past tends to repeat itself. It certainly did with tob and it appears to be doing so again.
choppack1Participant1) Gottfried and his teams has been very close, but they keep falling short enough to put the postseason in jeopardy each year.
2) Gottfried’s most experience team was only a bit better than his young teams and finished the season no better than his other 2.
3) I’d love to see Gottfried and yow call a presser to specifically address concerns about officiating. They have enough material for an hour and nothing will be done until these officials and the league has been called out…(if I had their coin I would pay for a study and threaten legal action if nothing changed. The treatment we receive borders on bad faith.)
4) Gottfried deserves credit and another year to see what he can do. However, nothing I have seen in his first 4 years here makes me feel he will do any better than he’s done thus far. He did have two 12-4 seasons at bama but he was also ran out in part because he results were slipping.
5) there’s nothing wrong with him hitting the town now as long as it isn’t impacting his work or he’s not embarrassing himself.choppack1ParticipantIt’s hard to imagine them being more unethical really.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – gott just stood there and took it. Did he say anything in the press conference? Has he or yow publicly called out the officials? Until then – expect no changes in the treatment from the zebras.
Mak4pak – you won’t throw gott under the bus but you’ll throw a student attending your alma mater under the bus? Odd who gets a pass and who doesn’t. It doesn’t appear we’ll get the equivalent of the 12-4 conference record gott delivered twice at bama.
choppack1ParticipantBass – I agree. Its frustrating as hell. Its like watching Charlie liebrandt take the mound in the bottom of the 9th with the world series on the line. But only, where’s gott’s Marquis grissom.
choppack1ParticipantBasspacker – you blame gott for this one? Does anyone on this board honestly believe that if the 2 teams switches coaches uva would be 10-1,22-1 overall…nc state might still be where we are, but I guarantee you uva wouldn’t just have 1 loss.
Funny thing is – gott coaches tech, BC or wake and they may be on the bubble. Such is the life of an nc state fan. I appreciate crappy coaches – no downside to firing them.
choppack1ParticipantIn the words of Kenny loggins…this is it.
Win here and you’re in the thick of it. Lose here and well, we’re approaching pipe dream status.
choppack1ParticipantAgreed bjd.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – its definitely differen but the vision, the identity should come from the head coach. I see Gottfried as that smart boss you like to work for, but who doesn’t stay on top of things and when things blow up – he’s looking at his direct reports for answers. He’s not a micromanager -and that’s good. But perhaps he’s not enough of a hard-arse and maybe he’s too close to his people.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – its his job to find one. I would also say that it’s critical that the main leader has a vision and great leadership as well. Dd’s vision for the football program is clearly articulated. He’s found his face and he now has a level of credibility. Do we hear the same vision coming from gott?
Do we see him looking for great leaders and perhaps compromising on the athletic side to bring this man in? Perhaps terry Henderson is this leader you think will right the ship.
I think we have a good coach. I just don’t know if “good” is enough at this level.
choppack1ParticipantI think out guys play hard, they are talented, and by all accounts are decent young men…this should give us an idea of where the problem could lie.
The evolution around here is funny. When a coach first arrives – the coach has bad kids, no one can win with this lack of talent/group of malcontents. Then it slowly transitions to “its the coach dammit.”
It was obvious in year 2 what was going to happen with sid. With gott – the jury is still out. Was his collapse at bama after a promising start the result of personal issues or did the game tweak in a subtle enough way that his way couldn’t bring better than 65% in conference wins.
He clearly deserves another year short of on-court issues. But depending on how recruiting goes, yow may need to do another proactive removal after year 5.
choppack1ParticipantI thought it was going to be an apology.
choppack1ParticipantHere’s a question – have we had 2 quality wins in a row since our run to the sweet 16?
This period of time really does harken back to last 5 of hwsbn without the acc championship runs…better scheduling – that’s the biggest off-court difference. But Tue results are el mismo.
choppack1Participant13ot – I’m assuming you mean 9 or 10 Acc wins not 9 or 10 more wins.
If that’s the case I agree – we’d need to go @ least 4-3 our next season… Which could happen, after all we went 4-3 with games @ uva, @ Miami, @ FSU, with home games vs Pitt, wake, UNC and duke.
We have @ ville, @ Clemson, @ BC (or is it @ vatech?) @ unc
At home we have uva, cuse, vatech(? See above)…If we win 4 vs. That schedule we’d have at least 2 quality wins and as I indicated above an RPI similar to what it was before wake… As others have mentioned we’d then have avoid the 1st round loss to avoid the RPI event. Losing to our next opponent probably wouldn’t hurt our RPI and would improve our sos and we’d be on the edge of our seats on selection Sunday.
But as you indicated – at this point that seems unlikely. Still its sports and crazy stuff happens all the time.
choppack1ParticipantOk – can we all agree that this is what we should expect in our current situation? What has occurred in the last 3 years and gott’s coaching career that would lead us to expect otherwise?
I mean – we see times when we’re very good and fun to watch – and others where we are awful. I don’t expect anything other than us falling on the wrong side of the bubble eventually because that’s what happened at Alabama.
