Bass – I think it’s on the coach (in this case.)
It’s great that we beat UNC-Ch Tuesday, but we had a chance to almost get off the bubble and we blew it. This wasn’t some January meltdown that we could easily recover – this was the easiest remaining game on our schedule.
I suspect Foose is probably onto something here…I mean, again, like TOB – you have a track record. We can sit there and ignore it (“This time it will be different!”) But I think we know what we Gott. I just wish he was 2 games a year better. Unfortunately, I think it’s more likely that pretty soon, he’ll be 2 games worse (as happened at Bama.)
choppack1ParticipantYea but Bass – how come some 18 year olds give consistent effort and others do not?
Here’s a question: Give Gott UVa’s roster – what do you think the results are?
Give Gott Duke’s roster – what do you think the results are?
OTOH, I bet his results at Wake or GaTech or BC would have been better than what they have had.He is a good coach. He’s not a great one. As much as it makes us pull our hair out – he’s been pretty consistent in Raleigh and Bama.
choppack1ParticipantThis is not on the coach, this is on the players for coming out flat.
I agree. When you look at Gott’s career at Bama and so far at State, you see a team that consistently defends well, rebounds well and is rarely on the bubble.
I don’t know why this team is so different than his others.
choppack1ParticipantYep whiteshoes. That was kind of my point about Coach K earlier. His team with 7 scholarship players available and its best player in an ankle boot – came out pressing.
The simple fact was that in terms of a season – the team accomplished NOTHING. To say “go celebrate” in the middle of the season when there’s lots of work to be done and be so damn blissful, well – you see exactly what we’ve seen vs. Clemson, vs. Wake and now vs. BC this year.
The first moment we had some daylight, we totally screwed it up. Is it any wonder we’re all so damn schizophrenic when it comes to this team. It’s really flipping disgusting.
choppack1ParticipantThis is surprising as the sun rising and setting. I don’t guess there will be any dancing by the HC today.
There’s a reason we’ve been on the bubble all 4 years despite different personnel. Gott can coach, and he can recruit – but I don’t think we’re ever “solid” with him at the helm. Funny, he went 12-4 a couple times at Bama – I wonder what happened? Did the game change, did the league suck, did he change?
choppack1ParticipantIf you want to know why coach k is coach k and others aren’t… After their game vs. UNC they played Clemson without their best player (okafor). They came out pressing… And dispensed of a decent Clemson team quickly.
That’s the kind of statement we need to make today if we’ve truly turned the corner.
choppack1ParticipantYep. Important game. It can give us a little breathing room and a boost in the “new” RPI.
We need to win 2 of next 3 to feel nice and relaxed come selection Sunday (and the worry wart in me thinks we’d still need to win our first gsme with a loss.)
choppack1ParticipantI would say this…if you’re new RPI, old RPI, sagarin and ken pom are all under 40, you are good to go. I think we need to win 3 of our last 4 to do that. Beating BC makes that much more likely.
choppack1ParticipantTexpack – I am not sure if we have “peaked” rpi-wise. If we beat BC our “new” RPI will probably get another bump….if we go 2-1, you are probably correct.

Incredible defensive performance… Between cat and anya – good luck. But d was a team effor . Tokoto never got a clean look in his comfort zone, nor did Brice… Hell, nor did anyone else.
Our guys played with fantastic focus, not many stupid fouls did a great job on the boards, not many turnovers. It all came together and EVERY ONE involved deserves credit.
Remove the UNC equation and realize what an incredible performance this was.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – many thanks. I will/may have to remember that.
choppack1ParticipantWhat does it say when you dread a game? Not because you’re opponent will simply take it to you but that you don’t think your squad will be allowed to win.
Yes – I have thought of asking the doc for Zoloft or an equivalent just for games like these. I guess its good to have these problems – we could be Christians in Syria or Iraq.
choppack1Participantno way we get a fair shake tonight. The screwjobs in 2013 (acc semifinal game) and last year were 1972 Olympic men’s basketball level…horribly unfair.
Like a crooked boxing match – we have to knock them out…. If it comes down to a decision, in the immortal words of bobby Knight..”lay back and enjoy it.”72 Olympic men’s basketball level…horribly unfair.choppack1ParticipantBjd – the screwjobs in 2013 (acc semifinal game) and last year were 1972 Olympic men’s basketball level…horribly unfair.

choppack1ParticipantNo way the acc allows us to win this game.
choppack1ParticipantWell if you were watching uva you just saw their best 2 remaining players take each other out on a play.
choppack1ParticipantAgreed alias. He’s a good coach and comes across as a likeable one too.
As for unc-ch, the keys will be keeping them off the offensive boards, not giving up the open 3’s and being patient on offense.
choppack1ParticipantI think our victory vs. Vatech took us to #4 sos and #51 RPI.
We are still in good shape. We win 3 of next 4,and we are in. 2-2 and we need to win minimum 1 tourney game and likely 2 to feel good about selection Sunday.
The skinny: we need 1 more good win (UNC, Clemson or our 2nd opponent in acc tournament would likely qualify.) And we cannot have a bad loss.. (@ BC or 1st round acc loss) without having a “marque win or 2”
choppack1ParticipantYea wulfpup – I agree, but we’d have another bad loss if that happened and it could hurt our RPI enough to get us in the danger zone.
choppack1Participant13ot – none of the indicators anyone uses back up your claims. The conventional wisdom is that if we go 4-1 and win 1 game or 3-2 and win 2 games, we’re in. That’s not guaranteed but unless the committee uses a different criteria than they have in the past…
choppack1ParticipantVawolf – I agree that while you can argue about whether RPI should so highly factor into decisioning, the committees actions are consistent and predictably.
choppack1ParticipantWulfpup – trying to understand the logic here. You get tired of the sendek’s and Greenberg’s gaming the system by going 9-7 in a power conference and beating up on the Arkansas pine-bluffs of the world ooc. You’d rather see them replaced by a team that goes12-4 in conference by beating the Arkansas pine-bluffs of the world but not winning their conference.
choppack1ParticipantHere is an interesting quote in the linked article.
The RPI rather tends to underrate teams from strong conferences and regions and to overrate teams from weak conferences and regionsAnd this is why its smart to schedule good teams in bad conferences… I also would be sure to play a UNCG and its various equivalents around the country on the road every year.
choppack1ParticipantThis is actually a fun conversation.
Me – I would like to see that kenpom and/or sagarin is better than RPI. I think the RPI is used and quite frankly it’s the primary tool used by the committee…but you should present hard data to show that the “model” used should be replaced.
