choppack1Participant
Devoe… Holy cow.
Thank heavens he didn’t discover that groove until 2 minutes left in the game.
The boys toughed it out tonight. It will be a good boost for an RPI that took a beating last Saturday. Tcb vs. Syracuse and we go dancing.
choppack1ParticipantGuts. That’s all this has been. Our guys played balls out tonight.
Character win tonight barring a st.Louis type collapse.choppack1ParticipantOn a different note – if you haven’t heard Abu interviewed – he’s the most articulate player we’ve had since Todd Turner. (Its probably close between him and Scott wood.)
But Gottfried definitely appears to be bringing quality kids.
choppack1ParticipantI know who I want as DC for basketball if he gets run out of Clemson.
choppack1ParticipantTurner needs a rest. Cat with a great hustle play.
choppack1ParticipantYea. Gott definitely has his pet. It was pretty obvious who it was in his first 2 years, pretty obvious who it is now.
I guess we now know at least one of the transfers next year. (Just guessing.)
choppack1ParticipantHmmm. Not good. We are tied…bit they are going to the basket. We, of course, well we are who we are.
choppack1ParticipantClemson has 2 possessions looks great…we, OTOH.
Make that 3 possessions.
choppack1ParticipantWow. I am glad I didn’t let my kid see that.
choppack1ParticipantIn gott’s defense, I think his job is incredibly stressful. He’s good at it too – but he’s in the sam air as the eagles.
I think we fight tonight. Hopefully that is enough!
choppack1ParticipantAlpha – the term “bitter” is somewhat of a misnomer. To me its a great taste and creates a comfortable buzz vs dizziness and a pounding!
choppack1ParticipantBill – yes those ipa’s have a kick. I have become a huge fan of a local brewery’s mild brew (inspired by bitter they have in UK.)
As for forgiveness – you and cow have now both tendered it..and its appreciated as is the comic relief before the big game. Cuz sometimes the game ain’t funny!
choppack1ParticipantI am a beer man – I have moved onto IPA’s which makes the 2+ hour drinking sessions I like to engage in a bit risky. The damn upheaval IPA at the local bar gave me a wicked hangover Wednesday and resulted in me missing church for the first time due to overindulgence in quite a while.
As for the game, this is huge. We have a team with whom we can easily dispense if we are on our A game. Of course, we have seen what can happen if we are not on ours.
choppack1ParticipantYes it was. I do think the emotional fatigue of being on the bubble is greater than the physical fatigue.
Unfortunately, we’ve created a situation where any slip could be fatal in the next 3 games. Another quality win would be huge and should quiet the critics. Again, I think we really need to win tonight. 2 straight and we don’t have to beat another “good” team until NCAA tournament.
choppack1ParticipantHow do uva’s players have any zip? Are they not tired??
choppack1ParticipantClose – I was going to bring up umd but didn’t include because we didn’t need that game to make the tournament. It probably did result in us being 4/5 that year vs 2-3.
But that’s what was so disgusting about the BC game. You have a chance to turn the corner and you blow it. This is showing up 15 minutes late for your follow up interview. I could understand it if we shot 33% and BC shot 37% and won because of a lucky break or if BC was a good team.
choppack1ParticipantI think we need to win at least 2 of next 3.
Our remaining 2 regular season games will both qualify as quality wins and neither (on paper) qualifies as a wtf loss.
If we go 1-1 we may need one more quality win. Like vawolf said, its not some random number we’re playing against its anyone who can’t afford to lose their next three games and anyone who can’t go to the tourney without winning theirs.
choppack1Participantbill – I agree with you. But when you say that, I guess you’re saying you can’t hope for 12-4 from Gott. I don’t know if Bama could have played like we did today and beaten Auburn or Georgia when he was there.
I guess it’s too much to ask. That’s one thing I love about a coach who fails. At least the path is clear. I mean, it was an “easy” decision to fire a Lowe or Robinson from a performance standpoint. I mean, you can’t fall from the floor – and as history has shown us – we can do a heck of a lot worse than Bubbles and .500 records in the ACC!
choppack1ParticipantBut bill – both Duke and UVa won. And UVa, when the played at Wake they doubled up the Deacs – without their 2 best players.
This team can play fast…and perhaps that’s the best way to deal with stuff like this. We didn’t make our run vs. Clemson or Wake until we started pressing. Perhaps, we should have started the game in the press. We’ve got a lot more depth than do and a faster game definitely favored us. But I don’t know what happened – all I see is the “effect” – and it’s the same effect that keeps a team on the bubble year in and year out.
choppack1Participantmak – It’s not the players fault. When your coach dances a jig after a game and public announces, “I’m celebrating tonight!”, you’ll have to excuse the players if they think they’ve accomplished something.
Funny – again, you blame it on 18-22 year olds instead of a guys who has 14-15 seasons of major college basketball coaching and has been on the bubble 7 of the 9 years he’s made the tournament. But by all means, keep on blaming it on the kids.
choppack1ParticipantWhat is this mop thing of which you speak?
Well, let’s see – I’ve got a broken phone, the door is falling off my truck, and my team sucks. It’s been when your life starts to resemble country music song.
You know the worst thing about this stinker – it ruins basketball until the next game. That’s why it’s always best to play in the NCAAs on Fridays and Sundays. At least you get to enjoy the tournament that way!
choppack1ParticipantBJD – He’s a player’s coach.
IMHO, there’s 3 kind of player’s coaches:
1) The worst kind: guy who has a very short career that the players don’t respect and rarely play for a couple of years after the drill sergeant has left.
2) The middle of the road player’s coach: A guy who cares about his players and is talented, but isn’t consistent enough in his approach to have his guys turn the corner. (Think Wayne Fontz, Gott falls into this category.)
3) The coach players respect because he cares and they know if they do exactly what he does they’ll win: Coach K, Dean Smith, Bill Belicheck, Calipari, Poppovich, and I think Bennett will ultimately fall into this category.choppack1ParticipantAnd chalk this up to the ying and yang of life. I was planning on vacuuming Tuesday evening to burn off my frustration of another heartbreaking loss. Needless to say, I got that vacuuming in today. (Don’t ask me why, but I typically have to be in a bad mood to vacuum – and I’m usually in a pretty good mood, but a $225 cleaning bill will sour that!)
choppack1ParticipantYep BJD – one of the unique things about basketball is that it gives 3 opportunities for success. The regular season conference slate, the conference tournament and the post-season tournament.
I sometimes think that V’s magic spoiled us. People forgot – he had started to build a pretty consistent winner in Raleigh – and the main reason we weren’t a “consistent winner” in 83 was that we lost our best offensive player for much of the year. As much as V emphasized the tournaments – he had some pretty good results. Even still, it’s a lot easier to build during the regular season – get a good seed and roll through those last 2 tournaments facing worse performing teams than it is to hang banners when you’ve got to go through a gauntlet.
choppack1ParticipantYea – BJD – we did. We all enjoyed the hell out of it…but the bottom line is that if you’re say “We’re going to celebrate tonight!” – You damn well better take care of business the next night or people will blame it on that short term thinking.
Mickey Mantle may have had just as many injury problems if he wasn’t hitting the town and raising hell all the time, but he was and when his body broke down, people naturally concluded it was a result of that behavior.
I’ve also seen interviews with Gottfried. He’s huge on “making the tournament”. Making the tournament is a minimum goal. It’s the equivalent of showing up to work sober at a school that’s won national championships.
Again – I have no problem with celebrating. But it’s similar to what I said about Larry Fedora – if you’re going to brag about your six pack of abs, you darn well better produce on the football field. Else, people will think you care more about the results in the gym than you do the results of your team on the field.
I’ll put it this way – if we lose out – which is a damn possibility (but unlikely) – how will his post-game dance look? It will look foolish, and we’ll all rightly point to that as “the Todd Maranovich” moment. “Hey, look what we did – this is good enough!”
