choppack1Participant
Let’s see where gott is in 10 years before comparing him to Dixon. I agree that recently gott has done much better than Dixon.
Regarding long tourney runs – ga tech made one 5 or 6 years ago.
I am sure someone will do it sometime. (I think uga may have beaten bama in the tornado tourney.) I do think it will take a perfect storm to do so – and unfortunately for us, I don’t see that storm right now. Hope I am wrong!
choppack1ParticipantBjd – I was wondering same thing but they only won 3. (That was last year of 9 teams.)
choppack1Participant4in12 – I was getting ready to post the same thing. I don’t think we win the tourney this year because we’ll have to play 4 games and the other likely winners only have to play 3. When we won in 87 we played the same # of games as our tourney opponents.
I would have loved to have played this duke team in the semis or finals. They’d be gassed. As it is, they’ll be fresh and we’ll be weary.
Translation: I don’t think we win the tourney until we are a top 4 seed unless we get a huge break. I actually think we’d have a better chance than anyone if we were a 4 this year…I still think we have a shot – but its extremely unlikely.
choppack1ParticipantHey 2 of 3 vs. Clemson in baseball (football and basketball for that matter) are certainly satisfactory.
Last year was a kick in the nuts. But hey, you can’t go to CWS every year. Thanks for updates.
choppack1ParticipantPitt has had a bizarre year. Talk about your shadow pack…they appear to be the yen to our yang. Hopefully we smack them again.
choppack1ParticipantLooks like laranaiga wins the Seth Greenberg award for scheduling combined with an average conference record…it will be interesting to see how the team responds this year since we have some rope. Hopefully, the lesson was learned vs. BC.
choppack1ParticipantI don’t want any part of Kentucky until a bit farther down the road.
Dance card has us @ 30. That’s definitely 8-9 territory…2 of the other popular models have us in the top 40. Depending on how we do in the tourney we can be anywhere from a 6 to an 11. Losing to Pitt won’t submarine our RPI like losing to BC did. Still – I think we need to beat Pitt to avoid the perfect Storm. (I will be watching today as Illinois state takes on northern Iowa.)
choppack1ParticipantHe used “swagger” more at least on CBS. Who knows maybe Ingram and bam bam like “swagger.
choppack1ParticipantDamn bjd – 40-31 was kinda lighting the world on fire.
On another note – I love those ACC ads. A great opportunity for parody…bring us your schools who cheat really bad, bring us your coaches who bang some strange in the booth of a restaurant or shouldn’t be driving a motorcycle.
choppack1ParticipantYep bjd – agree with the grades. He’s frustrating only because you can see that we’re right on the cusp with him. OTOH, Lowe and Robinson were frustrating because your thought was “exactly when do the adults in charge around here figure out this guy is leading us right off a cliff.”
choppack1ParticipantSo, let’s put anyone on ignore who says gott can’t coach. He can. Whether or not he will be great, time will tell.
choppack1ParticipantJust looked at v’s ACC record. His first 4 years he was 23-33 in conference…. He had 2 4-10 seasons. His next 5 years (when his teams were NCAA eligible) he went 40-31…after his first 4 years he was on the bubble once.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – I think v’s rep for that was overrated. The 83 team went 8-6 with the whit injury. He did go to the tourney one year with a 4-10 record but that was solely because we won the ACC. (How many years in his tenure were we bubble teams?)
I like gott but he is no v. Brilliant game coach. Gott talks about swagger – v certainly had it.
choppack1ParticipantAbu’s emergence has been nice.
Gott’s actually coached his arse off much of the season. The HC gets the credit and the blame – and tonight, he’s certainly earned a celebration. These last 2 games, the team showed a toughness that will serve them well against decent opponents.
I didn’t know we stood to face the Tigers again. Hopefully, they won’t start that Devoe kid, he was amazing the last few minutes of our last game. (Luckily, he was pretty much the only offense they had the entire second half.)
BTW – the team has played absolutely incredible defense 3 of the last 4 games.
choppack1ParticipantJust for anxiety’s sake (and why I’m saying it’s semi important for us to win Wednesday) – before the BC game, our RPI was 39 – after it was 55. I don’t think a loss to FSU will drop us that far, but we’ve only got 8 of those spots back after Clemson. This win today in all likelihood gets into the Top 45…with all of our factors – good wins, SOS, playing well late – I think it’s highly likely we still get a bid even with a loss, but I’d much rather be playing in a way so we avoid the first four AND the dreaded 8/9 seed. Ironically, that FSU win I’m hoping for, followed by a loss to Duke may just give us the seed I want to avoid most. However, we beat FSU AND Duke, and I think we’re a 7 – assuming we don’t lose to some scrub Friday in the tourney.
choppack1ParticipantGreat game. The strategy was great – they looked like they were having fun, and the team played hard and smart. I liked how we attacked the full court press when they threw it at us.
Solid season – I’d love to have one more win – which could ultimately cost us a tourney title this year or deaden our legs for the NCAA or in the worst scenario – both.
Still, I love that the staff and kids didn’t quit. I loved how they have seemingly found a love for defense. Having Anya in the middle makes all the difference in the world, and Martin is the best pound for pound rebounder I’ve seen in my lifetime for the wolfpack at this stage in his career. He’s had a lot of huge defensive rebounds for this team.
Great game and a fantastic way to finish up the regular season. This should clinch our NCAA bid, but a win vs. FSU will make it totally academic even if carnage erupts in the conference tournaments.
choppack1ParticipantWinning today is earl Hughes huge. Not sure if it totally punches the ticket with a Wednesday tourney loss…but it puts a bid even with a loss in the 80% range.
And the cuse is definitely my 2nd most despised team in the conference…. Although as indicated in previous thread I don’t blame them for cheating
choppack1Participant13ot – I think the punishment is better if he’s out half the season next year.
Still – I think the cuse got off light. At the end of the day – this “punishment” does nothing to dissuade others from cheating.
You want cheating to stop- throw the book at those who break the rules. If Syracuse got a 3 year postseason ban – schools would think twice about breaking the rules. Instead, they are allowed to “self-impose” in a year they stood a very good chance of missing the tournament anyway. Big deal.
The big question with NCAA sports isn’t “why do school cheat?” The bigger question is “why don’t they cheat?”
Obviously the NCAA is much more concerned with a member institution who lets a pedophile hang around the campus who just happened to be a former high ranking assistant. The dirty secret is that this wasn’t a sports thing but a result of the moral ambiguity/pretzel logic created by “the right to privacy”/”well he was never charged so we can’t ruin his life” mindset…which of course doesn’t apply if he had been suspected of raping a coed. Translation: if Sandusky was a professor instead, I suspect the university’s reaction would have been the same. Further translation: if the NCAA had simply said “this is a criminal matter, and the school president and others are facing criminal charges” no school is going to think its a good idea to keep a child molester on campus, there is zero benefit to the school to do that. Cheating, OTOH – is long term a good idea for a college athletic department.
choppack1ParticipantYuck. Did we have any good wins?
choppack1ParticipantWhat is our RPI? (Seriously.)
choppack1ParticipantIf you want to hear someone who should be institutionalized listen to bill Walton. It’s really sad.
choppack1ParticipantJigs just good stuff.
I think it reinforces what a lot of us believe and common sense. You can’t suck or even be mediocre on one end of the floor and win it all. But awesome stuff. Interested in seeing how coaches stack up – of course, you won’t have #s for v.
choppack1ParticipantThey are. But damn those guys are tough. It helps that most of their guys are 32 years old.
choppack1ParticipantNo such thing as a bad road win in conference. But this was impressive, not pretty. The team did what it had to do to win. Let’s do it now vs. Syracuse.
choppack1ParticipantBill…you get his d and gott’s o…of course, it doesn’t work that way does it. God, for the most part is fair. Then again, someone is sleeping with Erin burnett.
