ParticipantOnly thing I would like to see differently is for us to play unc-g @ Greensboro…. It would make a huge difference rpi wise.
But when it comes to scheduling gott is a proven master.

ParticipantGoing into the game I was under the impression that Troy was decent based on their recent history. However, after the game I did some research and it determined that they were pretty bad last year. They were 3-9 and ranked in the bottom 20% in both offense and defense.
They do have a solid starting qb (who evidently didn’t start until the 2nd half of the season.)
Given those facts – the game was ok. I thought the question mark of ol was answered positively…after this game, I still have concerns with our receivers (who didn’t get much separation from my POV) and our d – which gave up some big plays.
Who knows how good Troy will be and how much we will improve. I also strongly suspect that we had a vanilla game plan (and we will see the same next Saturday.)

ParticipantTough to predict records when you have no idea what will happen in the year. However, while young, dd has done a very good job building depth. Some question marks in the trenches and at receiver, but it would appear that both talent and depth are there.
I look for 8-10 regular season wins. 4-4 will represent improvement and 5-3 will be a watershed year (matching a conference record for wins in last 20 years.)
The season has gotten off to a solid start with fedora showing incredible stupidity/stubbornness allowing the chickens to get a w in Charlotte last night and harbaugh falling in his debut.

ParticipantThe only problem I see is that we have 1 pg and 1 semi-proven inside (offensive) big man….still gott is doing a solid job constructing his roster.
The 2016 class is huge. If you have been following you know the potential and that gott and staff have done a fantastic job positioning us for smith Jr and Bam.

ParticipantI am with pack leader. Let’s not put too much pressure on this kid.
He could be a solid player and not be as good as wood. He could be an all-american and not be as good as Rodney Monroe.
I have no frame of reference for cd’s shooting guard as I am only 45 – but I don’t doubt he was a good one.

ParticipantEager to see what k street does…and pharoah – and our lbs. D could be nasty…but we lose a couple of solid dls. But hey – its supposed to happen in cf.
Bjd good points on kicking game and ots. Cowdog – I agree – if this Clemson game is any time after 2pm – they are in trouble.
choppack1
ParticipantIn the last 20 years, whenever we’ve had experienced qbs coupled with inexperienced ols and young dls we haven’t been as good as predicted.
Still, I like the way dd is building program. I also think our ol could actually be a strong point.

ParticipantGood discussion here – I think both rye and bill make some excellent points.
Regarding the schedule, that’s definitely part of the problem… But schedules have usually been mediocre…but when factor that it into the other factors brought up on this thread, coupled with the new playoff – and you get that 4% drop.
07/17/2015 at 10:54 PM in reply to: College Football’s (Continued) Student Attendance Problem #87631choppack1
ParticipantOk – has anyone really looked at these #s critically? First off, they mentioned that in 2014 lots of little d1a schools were added…and when you take away that – oh my heavens, you see attendance was down from a peak roughly 4%. That’s not good – but sky isn’t falling either. Part of the problem is the extra game..there are other factors too. Finally, there is the college football playoff…the media told us that college football had to have it.
Well, it did – but it didn’t buy a bump – because the extra eyes watching were sports fans – not college football fans. And sport fans aren’t going to put up with the inconveniences a college football game brings.
I predict the college football playoff will get bigger and attendance will drop off… And you’ll see interest wane for the middle-tier majors of the world.

ParticipantThere was nothing like walking into Reynolds for a big game. If you didn’t get to experience you truly missed out. Sometimes “progress” sucks…I don’t think saving Reynolds sucks and renovating it at least avoids a sad demolition.

ParticipantHell, he couldn’t have been much worse than j.r. Smith.

ParticipantNate McMillan and spud Webb were jucos…like dez lee, mickey hinnant. Let’s not confuse these guys with true transfers like…mike giomi, Ralston Turner and Trevor lacy.
Great pick up. This kid’s a baller.
choppack1
ParticipantRye – he seems to do a good job securing talent. Seems like both a decent and ethical guy, but like you I see others question his decision-making process (who actually know what they are talking about.)
choppack1
ParticipantThanks for clarification cowdog – I didn’t want to connect dots that shouldn’t be connected.
Based on your laundry list it sounds like the weakness is in-game decisions.
I hate it. It sucks for kids, their parents and fans. I spent much of evening trying to comfort a dog in her last few weeks. (No, its a real dog.) When collapses like this happen my thoughts turn to players, staff and their respective families and unfortunate pack fans who don’t have much time left.
choppack1
ParticipantOk. So help me out here.
1. I didn’t play much baseball.
2. I don’t watch much college baseball.I do know this:
Part of being a good team is doing the little things: ie – not making errors.
However, I seem to recall last time we were close we had a ton of errors. I don’t track the statistics or anything…but do avent’s teams have more errors than most good teams?05/07/2015 at 8:16 PM in reply to: Tom O’Brien recruiting on display as Pack shut out of NFL draft #86179choppack1
ParticipantInteresting but not surprising that 1996 was the last year that happened. That being the case, some of that lack of talent fell on Sheridan. (The 96 season wss either moc’s 3rd or 4th.) Tob was fired (rightly so) because the talent well was drying up AND fan support had gotten very lukewarm… And yea, because Debbi had some balls.
choppack1
ParticipantYep cow…I generally expect history to repeat itself.
There have been several times when we have been on the cusp. It’s sad to day this but I will know we’re having a special football team if we win @ BC and @ wake.
I think we can do it. We do have plenty of question marks – but we have plenty of bodies to throw at the problem.
choppack1
ParticipantCow – I think you are older than I – but I’ve seen lots of promising seasons go down the toilet when we’ve had holes up front.
Of course, the pack nation should rest easy, because when I am worried we do good things, when confident…well…
choppack1
Participant13ot – he actually transferred from state.
But pretty paltry showing in the draft…I do think the talent problem is being addressed. I am worried about offensive and defensive tackles…we lost some experienced grown men out there.
choppack1
ParticipantLast year’s strong finish certainly helped our recruiting for the incoming class…next year is huge…as pack fans we know all too well what happens when good things are expected!
choppack1
ParticipantGetting a solid combo guard ready to play would be huge.
With the current lineup we’re still extremely susceptible to injury/foul trouble bug. Great core of players but I think that combo guard is the difference between a team that competes for a national title and a sweet 16.
choppack1
ParticipantWith exception of year 2…?I agree on the effort part.
choppack1
ParticipantNice to battle with calipari and UK and come away a winner.
Great job by the staff on this one. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and how it impacts the Martin twins. As I indicated in the other post, that’s the only potential drawback I see here. We need ballers though – and if he plays hard and is skilled, he will definitely contribute.
choppack1
ParticipantDepending on what UK can sign – I can actually see us being better than them next year.
But with Kentucky – there is a greater likelihood that if you stay for 2 or 3 years, you’ll play in the final 4.
As I have stated, I think gott has done a solid job recruiting. We are just missing depth for next year.
choppack1
ParticipantMy only concerns with this commitment was his position (one of the 2 positions we have depth) and his grades.
It looks like he can definitely play at this level. My biggest concern in losing him is the impact to Erik Smith.
I am not going to blame Cal for going after him after the commitment. Nor am I going to play “you’ll just get recruited over game” – as gott clearly recruits over existing players as well.
Its difficult doing what gott is trying to do. Clearly, he’s shown recruits he can get to the tournament and advance to the sweet 16. But he’s flying with the eagles.
