ParticipantWhat a shocker – we aren’t getting defensive rebounds. It’s frustrating – but I guess it is to be expected. If we were to be a good defensive rebounding team it would be a first since gott arrived.
Again, I think we’re seeing why we can be good, but won’t be great under Gott. He has done a solid job thus far, but this leopard isn’t changing his stripes. Viva gott ball! Viva la bubble.

ParticipantMichigan state would definitely get some consideration – especially if tOSU beats Michigan in that scenario. Heck, the way things are going they might be in if they win out regardless.
I don’t know if anyone watched that tcu – ou game but tcu’s coach made one of the most bizarre decisions I have scene by going for 2 when a kick would have forced ot. Ou couldn’t move the ball with their backup qb and tcu had just finished scoring 17 straight. Now, do I think Vatech should have gone for 2 – perhaps – but I didn’t see that game (thankfully).
Craziness out there. Those 4 big 12 teams in the top 25….3 of them have had their starting qb knocked out.and Oklahoma state’s guy is in bad shape.

ParticipantTalk about your NC state sh*t…Burris gets injured on a virtually meaningless onside kick. Like foose said – his loss would be devastating for our secondary – he hasn’t been beaten long all year
Our d will have to change its stripes a bit. All year we have been susceptible to big plays. The gamecocks made them earn it and they struggled. Our offense needs to run on them and hold onto the ball.
We can beat them but we’ll have to have our best game of the season. (Like we did last year.)

ParticipantReal interesting to see the development of this team. I actually like our triumvirate of the Martin twins and mav. Mav needs to get his feet set and let the game slow down just a bit, but I don’t think he’s gonna stop shooting. Cody actually looked ok playing the point at times. Seems to make good decisions with the ball.

ParticipantI thought we looked pretty good. Best part is lots of room for improvement.

ParticipantFrom what I am reading on tos the week may get worse. Hopefully we are getting trolled.

ParticipantThey are much more athletic true – but apparently they defend worse. I actually could have seen HWSNBN recruiting the Martin brothers – they fit in that Cam Bemmerman/Fells type mold. Of course, he wouldn’t have given them much offensive freedom as Gott gives his guys.
I don’t think he brings in those guys and Sean Kirk. And we all know that cat doesn’t sign with him either.

ParticipantRye – I would not mind zone if it wasn’t so bad. It gives up good looks on the 3 point line and offensive rebounds.
It’s worse than our man to man – which says a lot. Boeheim teaches the zone – it’s his thing, hell, he can probably go on about zone d the way Vince Lombardi went on about the power sweep. Or the way Bobby Knight did about man to man…I don’t think that’s where Gott’s passion lies. (I am not implying anything other than I think he’s an offense first guy.)

ParticipantBjd – its called “wings and things”.
Somewhat similar in terms of personnel to another coach we had here a few years ago.

ParticipantThis point guard issue was glaring for a while. I don’t know if we didn’t go all in on a combo/pg or if we went all in and totally whiffed – so this – and the bad d that we are seeing this far are foreseeable and are expected. Unfortunately, we have realized the risk of injuries – with Freeman’s pre-season injury and Henderson’s ankle injury. Of course, this was foreseeable as well.
In other words, thus far, in the high stakes world of college basketball’s card game – we’re on the short stack. Still, gott has managed to play these hands pretty well since he’s been in Raleigh.

ParticipantImagine this team if cat gets another concussion. We ‘be actually been pretty fortunate on the injury front in basketball the last few years. And we don’t have the depth to be unfortunate and dance.

ParticipantMak – IMHO – that’s a sign of the lack of talent around them more than an indictment of their abilities. Brisset and cat are both major conference calibre starters – better than a significant % of those at the same position in the acc. Are there games flawed – yes – but that’s to be expected with college kids who aren’t the clear best in their conference.
Look – we played a decent game vs. FSU – but we don’t have the talent to expect to beat a team as talented as FSU at home unless their coach is really dumb. Unfortunately for us – Jimbo woke up and changed qbs.
choppack1
ParticipantI thought the team fought today. I think when he has time – Jacoby is solid – but like 90% of other qbs – does worse after getting hit a few times.
I thought the d had a good gameplan and initially so did the offense. This year’s big bugaboo has been the second half. Like Vatech and Louisville – a decent 2nd half offensively keeps us on the game.
Got 2 more games to do something good. 4-4 at the end of this year would be solid and be a great foundation for next year.

ParticipantI had a feeling it wouldn’t take our fans long to start criticizing Maverick’s defense.
Here’s a hint – if you’ve got a kid who by all accounts works really hard on his game and you find his d lacking – perhaps, the staff doesn’t do a very good job teaching and reinforcing proper technique and good team defense.
Guys can only do what they are asked and taught to do. I suspect that’s exactly what they are doing.

ParticipantMaverick – you probably won’t hear his names for a big job. He has a coached a lot of seasons of basketball. His best overall season @ bama was his 4th – where he went 12-4 and had a #2 seed in the NCAA tourney – in his 7th year – he again went 12-4 – and had a #5 seed. Neither of these teams advanced past the second round.
He has a track record and we shouldn’t be surprised when history repeats itself. His greatest strength is that his teams have shown resiliency throughout the marathon that is a college basketball season. He has shown an ability to build effective teams under different circumstances.
He has to have a great heart – because his teams seem to live on the bubble. As a fan – it stresses me out – but like others it beats the tenure of Sidney Lowe or Les Robinson – so in the words of Bobby Knight – try to sit back and enjoy it.

ParticipantIs this where we go to complain about the game?
choppack1
ParticipantWow. That sucked. This is an example of why we have been no higher than a 7 seed under gott. Unless we learn how to defend, we’ve seen the ceiling of gott. Hopefully, we won’t see similar lows to bama. However, we know that under gott we start slow and generally finish strong. It’s frustrating, bit we have seen this before with staff – and like a stunt pilot -/gott pulls out of it.

ParticipantRye – good points. I don’t think most of us are expecting a stairstep progression – but rather general evidence of improvement.
And clearly, we are in a much better place than we were 2 years ago. Unfortunately, we haven’t yet reached those very reachable heights of where we were from a record standpoint. (4-4)
.458, .446, and .464 – those are the winning %s of our last 3 coaches. While the on field results have been wildly inconsistent – the overall results were amazingly consistent.
Perhaps the 0-8 start in 2013 and 0-4 beginning last year was the bottoming out we needed to get out of that funk. (Look at it like the red sox falling behind 3-0 to the Yankees in the alcs when they finally won it.)
Although we beat 2 awful conference teams this year in BC and Wake – we won both games easily…that’s good. Big test Saturday… And no so much whether we win or lose – but do we hang with them. Is it a ball game in the 4th quarter?
choppack1
ParticipantAll should note – game plans vs. Wake and BC were solid and worked to a tee. And I am definitely seeing progress on thst front..
choppack1
ParticipantBjd – I agree with you on the scheduling take – and I brought up this before the season that it might cost us the game vs Louisville much like the scheduling cost us the unc-ch game in 2001. (Although that year the scheduling wasn’t nearly as bad as it was this year.)
I disagree with taking much positive away from Clemson game from a long term standpoint only because in dd’s 3 years here he has played very competitive games against our strongest home game opponent each year.
What really needs to happen is that we see that type of effort and imagination against our less talented opponents across the board. (It won’t help matters if UNC-ch starts building something over there.)
At this point, I am cautiously optimistic, coming into the season, I was very optimistic – a lot of things happened to create a challenging environment – but those typically happen in football.
choppack1
ParticipantI think progress is being made. However, sooner or later you find your ceiling… And that’s really all that’s out there isn’t it? Is Doeren’s “ceiling” a single 5 conference win season every 5 years or so with a typical season being 3 or 4 wins? (Which is exactly what our last 3 coaches were) or are we seeing the gradual, steady build of program that typically wins 5 conference game in a season with the occasional ceiling of 7-8 wins?
I firmly believe 90+% of the posters here support waiting it out to see – regardless of what happens the rest of this year.
choppack1
ParticipantProgress is being made I agree.
However, context is very important and a couple of things need to be considered. While it is great to beat BC and Wake at their place – these 2 teams are a combined 1-12 this year. From a historical perspective – this is the worst BOTH of these teams have been since BC came in the conference – and it’s not even close. The previous years we played at Wake and BC (from 03 with wake and from 05 with BC to 2011) – their combined record during those years was 42-38 – which is very respectable. Now, in 2013 (dd’s 1st year) they were a combined 6-10 in conference play. This was the worst record of these 2 teams before this year. Basically, it’s the equivalent of sendek sweeping the tar heel teams that missed the tournament.
Regarding Dabo – he went 6-2 (which tied Tommy Bowden’s best) his first full year and won the Atlantic division (Tommy never did that) He slipped his second full year, but went 6-2 again and won the division again the next year…so it’s not really fair to compare him with DD…two totally different situations and go figure, totally different results.

ParticipantAgreed wufpack – we what the bed vs. The ‘ville and Vatech… We take 1 of 2 and we’ve got a different perspective. However, I think we can get at least 1 back we can be making solid, undeniable progress.
choppack1
ParticipantI don’t see how one can feel good about our ability to stop Cook – healthy. However, he’s had a bad hammy and it may not be in good shape after Clemson game. Our pass d will have to be much better than it was vs. Tigers, BC and Vatech.
I do think we have a shot – but we’ll have to play and have the best game plan of the season.
