ParticipantI am a huge dantonio fan, but I don’t care about his player stats as a player. (Again, it’s not that I don’t appreciate him, I just think it’s irrelevant for a coach.)
There is definitely a purge going on – glad dantonio survived and I hope he improves our strength and conditioning. He played under 2 different ones I think and probably coached under tob’s.
Interesting to see whom we hire and that other thing (which isn’t so interesting, you feel bad for the impacted parties on a personal level. These guys have families and I hope for the best for all of them, who by all indications represented the pack with class.)

ParticipantRye – the ol was the other area we were developing depth. Was Syracuse’s offense much when kitchings led it?

ParticipantThanks botb – I looked at our o and d like my golf game. Some days, my long game was crap, but my short game was good, other days, my long game was stellar and my short game crap, some days both were crap. Rarely, were both stellar.
Prime – regarding “analytics”. I agree. However, in sports, you have to leave a good deal to the ” gut”. Obviously, the perfect hire for NC state in 2012 was a coach who had demonstrated the ability to take a program in a similar (or worse) situation to a higher level. Of course, that POV probably prevents you from hiring an assistant who may have “it” like a Dabo Sweeney.
And it can result in you hiring a coach like Sendek. Altht, in our current situation I would take the sendekesque results (of moving the ball ahead in first 3 seasons.)
You have to hope your leadership can make quality decisions. How has demonstrated that in the past, but she seems to burn a lot of bridges in her wake. As a state fan, I don’t give a tinker’s damn about that, (we probably need that) but this type of person can’t afford to be we wrong much at all because of the bridges they burn

ParticipantBotb – what was our p’s on offense (not as compared to “d” but just our own punts not the ones we force.
choppack1
ParticipantWufpacker – since you singled out my post. Its a simple question really… Part of effective leadership is surrounding yourself with quality people and recognizing good talent…another part is, of course, making tough decisions.
I can assure you, if this had been hux getting the ax – I won’t have applauded the decision. Like you, to me this strikes me as the lower hanging fruit.
I haven’t done the homework, so I don’t know how many effective coaches had to fire both coaches early in their tenure in the same season.
I just know this – one of the main reasons I support giving DD at least 6 years (in spite of a conference record that rivals only Tom Reed) is the belief that stability in itself can yield good results. When you have to fire coordinators, you set back that stability a bit it would seem.
But hey, we may just have that stability on the defensive side of the ball.
Who knows? I certainly don’t. I do believe that DD can be effective coach, but you’ll have to excuse me if I indulge in a little “self-flagulation”. I just call em as I see um with the knowledge that I don’t know the future and there is an exception to every rule.

ParticipantAs someone who has been baffled many times with Canada, I find his release very perplexing if hux is allowed to stay. So what you want about Canada, but he has shown signs of genius. He has shown he can do his part in engineering upsets…the same can’t be said about hux thus far in his tenure in Raleigh.
Of course, hux may be fired tomorrow. If that happens, what does it say about the head coach that he has to fire BOTH coordinators that he had hired 3 years into his tenure.

ParticipantYea Rick. That’s a bit ridiculous.
But hardly surprising. This NC state – while our rival uses its ethical lapses to field great teams, our guys use them on themselves. (This is not to say deb, Woodson or our coaches have done I thing wrong, there is no evidence whatsoever to support that…it just looks bad if true. And part of ethics is to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Then there was the whole oblinger fiasco.)

ParticipantPlywood I am saying that he had better position than the rest of our guys. If he didn’t have butter fingers he catches it. OTOH, if our guys had better position, we have the rebound and ball down 2 (I think)
Our guys actually did pretty good on the boards tonight but in the last 2 minutes, rebounding is just as critical as it was earlier. Oh well, onto wherever.
choppack1
ParticipantHere’s a question for you plywood – of the 4 guys under the basket – who had the best position? It was the Vatech guy.
Regarding the call, it looked like Abu may have touched it, but we will never know – kudos to foxsports for managing to make a play that could have been indisputable a mystery.

ParticipantHellh8tr – every big man on our rose stinks from the line. While it may not be the coaches fault they don’t hit them, he did recruit them. At the end of the day, its a recurrt pattern and if you have no one you can put in who can hit foul shots, as a coach that is today on you.
I would buy this argument if we had good foul shooters who missed here and there but when no one on your front line shoots over 60% from the stripe – you can’t expect them to HIT the foul shots.
It sucks being a state fan.
choppack1
ParticipantBjd – I loathe the officials in this league as well but we will never get the benefit of the doubt until they are called out. Hell, out conference leader was ad at UNC when arguably the biggest cheating scandal of all time occurred,..and crickets.
Regarding the game itself – we gave up several boards, made 1 of our last 3 foul shots and failed to switch and it resulted in an open 3 pointer…we have seen this movie before and we will continue to see it.
choppack1
ParticipantHow many times did msu punt?
Good stuff though botb – watching both Clemson and bama it was interesting the similar arc of both games. Slow starts by the winner, but all the while the winner basically being sure to take care of the ball.
choppack1
ParticipantWe will find out more tomorrow.
In Bill’s scenario we pretty much need to be perfect against the dregs of the conference. I think the board has reached a sad consensus and we don’t need to hash it out.
choppack1
ParticipantI don’t think that’s relevant to out situation. We are mediocre because our defense against the best teams we played was horrid… And our offense vs. Louisville and Vatech sucked.
Acc championships, final 4, 6-2 conference records are carts way before the horse…we need to 4-4 before anything else.
choppack1
ParticipantThis game was an epic fail…IMHO, it accentuated the problems that we saw this year….defense couldn’t get stops when it had to and when the door was cracked open the offense couldn’t make plays.
Funny, msu made adjustments on d and offense. In the second half they basically spread us out and passed to whomever the linebacker was covering. Very disappointing in that we had seen this starting with Louisville game and apparently we didn’t make any adjustments to stop this.
Funny, Houston is totally shutting down an FSU offense we couldn’t stop.
While the offense was the problem in our first 2 conference games, it was our d that was absolutely awful in our losses. There needs to be significant changes on that side of the ball.

ParticipantMost people at the pinnacle of their profession who earn a ton of money work those hours. To me, this is all about building a relationship because here is a guy who can truly help…quite frankly, if I was ad and our job opened up – I would be calling him not for interest but for names.
choppack1
ParticipantKeep in mind – it doesn’t have to be as AD…but IMHO, you want him involved in ncsu athletics in some way. You have one of the successful NFL executives as an alum – I trust our ptb are doing everything in their power to leverage the relationship.
choppack1
ParticipantDumb to fire Chuck?? We didn’t have much of a choice. Once he got his own players in here and Rivers left his best conference record was 3-5 and 0-3 vs. UNC-ch teams that were actually pretty bad. If he had “it” he would have done better or at least ended up as hc somewhere else.
Rick – I don’t think the stinker OOC games hurt us as much from a recruiting perspective and with the exception of this year – its not typically as bad as it was this year. Still, we had major games vs. UNC and Clemson where the 1st half environment was good.
Look, the 2nd half attendance is a problem. We can act like it’s not a problem – but it certainly can’t help. It would be understandable if it was just for stinkers, but the same problem was there for the Clemson game as well and anyone watching the game on TV was treated to the announcers calling us out.
choppack1
ParticipantI think the situations are totally different…. One guy has coached in major conferences for 15 years, in a sport where changes can happen quickly… The other has just 3 years experience where it takes several years to build something (especially at a school like NC state).
As for fan support. He kind of has a point. We don’t like to think of ourselves as fair weather or fickle, but to a certain extent we are. IMHO, pass outs are a huge issue. (I say this as someone who utilizes them)
But on TV it looks terrible… And we can’t expect much of a change in our football fortunes when recruits see that. Don’t get me wrong, as fans we are pretty much walked all over and while DD shouldn’t have called us out..we can’t expect much or expect a good coach to stay unless that changes.choppack1
ParticipantThis year wasn’t about bowl games, as correctly noted, it was more about failing to take a more tangible step forward.
I will say that the game that I find most encouraging is the game @ FSU. We have given the best opponent we played in Raleigh a run for its money all 3 years, but against our best road opponents, we were destroyed… Not this hear.
We will see. I think next year we likely take a step back as we break in a new qb, but I think you give DD a chance and a few more years to see if we can build and sustain something here in Raleigh.
choppack1
ParticipantPackphanistan makes a great point. The starting from square 1 every year – even when you are breaking in new starters…of which we basically return 3, but aside from Mav – everyone who is receiving pt has been in the program for at least a year. If we have 7 guys and 6 of them are projects…that’s on gott.
I guess my point is that this lack of continuity is really what has kept this program from making the next step thus far in Gott’s tenure.
Within the next 2-3 years – he needs to put a product on the floor that says “this is what I can do and I can’t do any better” else I think it’s fair to assume we have seen that already.
choppack1
ParticipantPackofMac – I won’t count his teams out. I think this one has the most difficult road in terms of talent and depth – bit Gott’s history here shows teams that stumble a great deal for the first 2/3rds of the season, but recover enough to make the tourney.
choppack1
ParticipantLet’s face it – the surprise would be consistently good results and solid fundamentals. Again, we have seen this movie before – if we are lucky, it will end like it has the last 4 seasons with us ending up on the right side of the bubble. If we aren’t – it will end up like his last 2 seasons at Alabama.
However, I am fairly confident we have seen the ceiling of the program under its current leadership. I would love to be wrong.
choppack1
ParticipantGetting mad at Gottfried for a game like this is like getting mad at a baby for crying.
We’d all like a coach who steamrolls through a decent schedule with just 1 or 2 losses, who wins 2/3rds of his games in conference and who has a top 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.
We don’t have that. What we do have is a coach who has gone to 4 tournaments in 4 years, who hasn’t had a losing record in acc play.
Gott has earned at least this year and next, he’s done a solid job here. We’re it not for his history at bama he’d have more support.
As for me, I am casually watching, trying to enjoy the gott-coaster. I do think we have challenges in depth in talent and depth – something that he hasn’t faced thus far (which isn’t encouragin in year 5.)
choppack1
ParticipantUnfortunately, We agree on Sidney.
Les was put in a difficult situation but I believe he was in over his head from a program management standpoint.
Gott is obviously in a much better situation than Les and we can’t complain about the results thus far. At some point, and hopefully soon, we will start seeing a top 16 NCAA seed and top 4 acc finishes.
