choppack1Participant
Like I said, not the coach, clearly on the the team, and when they decide to show up for the whole game, we win. The coach had every right to call them out last game, and see what happened.
On a micro level, that’s certainly true. Every coach wants his team not to turn it over, take good shots, defend well and rebound well.
But the issue is the macro-level. Was this team built with ALL of the parts needed to be a solid team in the ACC and to make the NCAAs?
Even in his successful first 4 years the defense is not consistent enough to win a championship, in the conference or nationally.
If you believe that most battles are won before they are fought like l do, then you see the the overall performance of the team this year, and possibility the next couple of years, being a reflection of failing to prepare for the contegencies that arise when your A Plan isn’t an option.
Perhaps Gottfried has learned. If Abu comes back next year, we should be a solid team – even without an additional big man. Will fit be like his first 4 years where injuries were minimal and he was able to replace the transfers – so he can stick with Plan A? If he does catch those good breaks, will we better than a 7 seed?
choppack1ParticipantI missed the part of the game being @ Miami.
I also didn’t say gott was a bad or even mediocre coach. However, it is obvious to anyone who has eyes that these two approach their craft much differently.
Gott has enjoyed more success in the NCAA tournament to this point. It will be interesting to see if Bennett’s program makes a move in the NCAA post season.
choppack1ParticipantThat was fun. Cat was great but is not yet 100%/
The key was that the Martin’s and Rowan didn’t take bad shots.
choppack1ParticipantWhy is Freeman in the game?
choppack1ParticipantFunny how good the sportsmanship is when you are 1-7.
choppack1ParticipantWe have actually been very good in the first half in conference most of the year
choppack1ParticipantWell UVA just worked Louisville over @ Louisville. Tony Bennett and Gott are a good example of polar opposites.
choppack1ParticipantSometimes everything comes together… In a bad way.
choppack1ParticipantToo many game, too much money for those games, to top it off, team hasn’t been great.
This was a $ grab by karmanos I suspect current ownership will take theirs… If there are any takers.
choppack1ParticipantIdk – we will see. He has a great secondary, good linebackers, solid dl…IMHO, panthers DC did well yesterday. I have to believe advantage panthers. Davis being hindered is huge. Peyton will be throwing lots of short routes…to minimize pressure.
Panthers have the most difficult run offense to defend in the league. If they can run effectively game over.
choppack1ParticipantBill – that’s a good point on the fouling.
This year probably will be the first one where we don’t go the dance under Gott. To me, the only real question is where do we go from here.
The bad news for Gott – is that he has a track record – and that has to be considered when evaluating his future. But that evaluation, from the point of retention, shouldn’t have to be addressed until next year.
Good coaches do miss the tourney – it happens. The question for Gott is as it is for all of us – will be learn from mistakes or not.
choppack1ParticipantNope bjd – that’s who the man was and it wasn’t right to fit him into a template that wasn’t him, IMHO, it probably would have made him not as good a coach.
Say this about v though, we always had a backup pg and usually had plenty of depth…different game then.
choppack1ParticipantDuke got some good looks on the first half – they just missed them. In the second half they stopped missing them and we had a 5 minute span where we stopped moving offensively and were taking bad shots.
I love V – and he is the best coach we have had since Everett Case – but Coach K had started building his empire while V was here. The difference between Coach K and V is that Coach K – like Dean Smith before him just wanted to coach basketball. Valvano, OTOH, used his celebrity to host a nightly talk show and became AD. In short, he was a much more complex man than K or Dean. This is why we missed the tourney in 84, and had to win the Acc tournament in 87 to get a bid. However, there was definitely evidence that was focusing more on the basketball side of things when he was forced out.
choppack1ParticipantI believe the great players will develop himself, I do think Howell took a huge step forward, lacy was a much better player for us than for bama.
My biggest gripe has been he doesn’t play enough guys and doesn’t sign enough of them. At the end of the day though, that’s just an opinion…. All that matters are the end results. And making tourney 4 of 5 years is solid any way you cut it for NC state.
Next year and potentially the next will tell us a lot.
choppack1ParticipantGott has earned a mulligan. The man can coach, the question is can he build. I think he needs to play more guys to keep his players more happy, if we busted our ass on d, that would cater to it…
He can prepare a team and he can bag an elephant… But he’s competing against the best big game hunters to bag more…he needs to improve the roster building and talent acquisition and development areas…if we a going to get what we all want.
I was pleased with the effort today. I like that gott can identify guys who can carry a team. I was hoping this would be a breakthrough year, maybe next year… We will have some ballers. Hopefully we can keep our bigs.
choppack1ParticipantHuge get for pack, especially after departure of Grinnage. Randy Moss’s son I believe.
choppack1ParticipantThe concern I have for next year is that Abu or Anya leave early. We will definitely have talent at the 1,2 and 3 spot. However once again we find that at this point, there appears to be no backup point guard and to date no big men have inked.
The comparison with amato is appropriate – amato often chaesed stars and wasn’t prepared when we he struck out. Still, Gott has done a much better job keeping his staff.
Next year is huge. Its very likely Smith is 1 and done, if Dorn has a good season he will be gone as well. Coaching college is tough these days..if I guy averages 15+ he probably goes pro, if he has to sit too much he transfers. But a coach has to build his roster with these facts in mind.
choppack1ParticipantI thought team player well with exception of – minutes where the movement stopped on offense.
This year is all about avoiding disaster and embarrassment.
And thad moss committed today!
choppack1ParticipantTorfino – I see the ocean and I want to swim in it! But I would enjoy the heck out of watching those waves.
Bill – it does sometimes – but I like the disasters!
choppack1ParticipantThe only problem with the beach is that you don’t get snow….I love sleet, snow, big storms…if I am allowed to have my ship come in I will build on my lot on the coast and will head to the Shenandoah when I see a forecast like this…and yea, go to 10 football games a year.
choppack1ParticipantWe will know in next 3 years won’t we? We have 0 big men committed for next year and could lose 2. We have 2 super guards lined up (not counting cat.)
That a veteran coach got caught in this storm this year is inexcusable…but he has built up a season or two in reserve based on past pere.
This season isn’t over yet and the man can certainly coach… Bit can he build..because coaching ain’t enough here.
choppack1ParticipantNow about that scholarship allocation
choppack1ParticipantNicely done sparta.
Time will tell. We saw last night what gott ball is capable of when coupled with good defensive rebounding…for much of game. I also think we match up well with Pitt because they play a plodding style without a lot of good outside shooters and tons of guard penetration.
choppack1ParticipantGreat effort… Keep winning boards and keeping guys off the offensive boards and we will be fine.
choppack1ParticipantThe d has definitely improved and I believe twin B has started last 2 games.
Gott definitely isn’t afraid to shake up a line-up. -
