So what do we do? Sign in until we hire a new AD? Do we force Yow to resign?
I am a big believer that you can over think and over complicate things. Like others on this site, I think our adminstration needs to operate under the assumption that next year’s decision won’t be an easy one that will be cheeredd by the media.
choppack1ParticipantBJD – AD’s don’t have much pull compared to a successful coach. And I think your point is that after 2 years, a coach won’t have had time to develop his program – and that’s fair.
However, again, I would be worried about hiring a coach who is worried about that. AD’s come and go. This isn’t professional sports where the owner’s regularly force out successful candidates. There is a power gap and the AD can screw up more things than they can fix.
choppack1ParticipantYou have to give Yow credit for some fantastic non-revenue hires. However, she deserves mucho criticism for the public meltdown in the basketball search.
And I think as far as a “fallback hire” which Gottfried unquestionably was – it was a solid one. If ever there was a case for co-ad’s it’s with Yow when it comes to non-revenue vs. Revenue.
choppack1ParticipantEas – I would say half the teams…only Vandenberg played for Lowe. Granted, Tyler was recruited by Lowe, but still Gott deserves credit for years 3 and 4.
I think this year, and certainly 2 years from now we may be in another dicey spot. Where Gott has failed is assembling a balanced roster.
Unless we have unexpected departures (read anyone but cat) – we should be good again and we will be perhaps his most talented team yet.
If he can’t do better than a 6 or 7 seed, we can pretty much say ,”we will never be great under Gott. “
choppack1ParticipantYep. Going to bed @ 10:15 vs. 11:15 was the right call.
choppack1ParticipantLooks like I will be in bed early again tonight.
I owe the wolfpack a huge thank you for helping me properly prioritize my life.
choppack1ParticipantBack to recruiting – as I understand it, we are hopeful that we will end up with at least a grad student transfer big man.
Of course, the bigger problem is that we don’t have any young big men signed. As such, if we don’t sign any more freshman or juco big man, we are looking for freshmen at the 4 and 5 spot. Really a very poor job in this area.
choppack1ParticipantDo these guys not do any friggin homework? “Freeman’s leg looks like it is bothering him.” Uhhh, that’s because he has a stress fracture.
choppack1ParticipantPackfanistan – I don’t think it’s so much bad luck as it is a direct result of the opposition.

Tractor – thank you, you’re correct.
Regarding Coach K – I think part of it is having the kids only for 1 year.
You guys bring up a good point about d though. And golden state certainly isn’t known for defense. And really I am not sure what to say other than that in a day and age where it is being de-emphasized, we are still bad enough that it’s a bad thing.

If we can win Paul westphaul style – fine. I also am a big believer in basic fundamentals… Among those are boxing out and having an offense that doesn’t look like basic ISO’s.
However, I have thought that what keeps Gott’s teams from being great is their D. Specifically if we forced more to’s or did a better job on the defensive boards, that should probably be enough.
I don’t have a pitchfork out or anything. I am a big believer in earning things based on merit and Gott has earned next year.

When your players have this kind of impression, it gives an idea of where the passion of the coach resides.

Yes Adventuroo – another career day by another opposing player, which is surprising since we were told that defense would be the strength of this team.

Good effort tonight. Then again under gott effort is usually there.
choppack1ParticipantYou know I just watched someone get their tooth pulled out by a Lamborghini… Fo real – on jack arse 3d.
It was quicker than a state game!
choppack1ParticipantAs fate has it I have had to work a bunch of weekends… And this year that has not been a problem. Losign conference record in football and basketball, swept by the heels.
Georgia Tech is interesting. Gregory’s seat had to be boiling in hotlanta. Hopefully, he eeks out an NCAA play-in game.
choppack1ParticipantVa – I want multiple post season bans – the banners coming down don’t mean squat. They still got to enjoy the moment and the fans don’t have to return the t-shirts.
choppack1ParticipantYep. I am thinking a 3 year post season ban and loss of scholarships and banners coming down would make me smile.
I think it’s more likely we will see 2 year post season ban for football, 1 year for basketball and 3 for women’s basketball and some minor scholarships reductions. IMHO, that is something above a wrist slap, but it ain’t no hammer and discourages no one.
02/25/2016 at 11:04 AM in reply to: A Victory Over the Tarheels Would Salvage an Average Season #100142choppack1ParticipantStupidly weighing in on this Sendek / Gott comparison. Sendek inherited a program where the NIT was a huge step up…after a promising start he plateaued. He had a disasterous year 5, but then made 5 consecutive tournaments.
The only reason I held out some hope with Sendek was because this was first major gig, he had good bloodlines, didn’t seem to do much else other than coach basketball, and because he proved a ton of folks wrong when he made the tourney, and I figured it could have been just part of painfully slow progress. (That he had already shown).
Gott, OTOH, was a guy who actually left (or was forced to leave mid season.) His career showed steady progress at Bama, then it fell apart. Either he changed, the game changed or his conference got tougher. When he came here, the hope was and still remains that he knows exactly what went at Bama and won’t let it happen again.
This hear creates doubts that he has. Even in his successful seasons, there have been some glaring red flags that we weren’t building, bit rather simply treading water.
Next year will tell us a ton. Hopefully, after it, we won’t lose our best coaching options if it ends like I expect.
I don’t want Gott fired, he doesn’t deserve it. He has delivered solid results, and has earned next year.
02/24/2016 at 10:25 PM in reply to: A Victory Over the Tarheels Would Salvage an Average Season #100111choppack1ParticipantMr. Wolf – that’s what we ran last year we just had 2 players who could go 1 on 1.
02/24/2016 at 9:06 PM in reply to: A Victory Over the Tarheels Would Salvage an Average Season #100102choppack1ParticipantBoys – did what I could. Went to church, ate pizza without watching game, entertaining my mom. I will probably even put my son to bed and fall asleep in the process.
02/23/2016 at 7:18 PM in reply to: #4 NC State Wrestling caps off historic season winning at #2 Iowa #100046choppack1ParticipantWow!! I don’t believe in upsets in wrestling and track and field/ cross country. Great job by the team great hire by Yow. I don’t have a problem with paying a guy like this something equivalent to his quality.
choppack1ParticipantWhile we’re playing these games…what if Josh Powell would have returned for his junior year? What id Scooter Sherril doesn’t sprain an ankle?
Injuries happen, as do early departures. In his second season, Gottfried returned 4 starters (and brought in 3 MCD AA’s) from a sweet 16 team…that went to the acc semi-finals and was in within a c-hair of beating unc-ch. The next year he want 11-7 in conference and didn’t win the ACC and lost in the first round.
Gott will have his chance next year to show that he can lead a talented team to a seed better than an 8 seed in Raleigh.
choppack1ParticipantPackphanistan – I was going to ask how this one guy wrecking Gott’s defensive gameplan got 16 years of eligibility.
