Think pack – this year is somewhat irrelevant. In essence, there are really 2 issues:
1. Have things fallen off so badly on the recruiting trail that we are in a nosedive in terms of personnel.
2. The more complex and difficult issue of what happens if gott recruits sufficient talent again but can get us no higher than an 8 seed.
Going into the season, I was concerned about the 2nd item. The first one is the one I didn’t see coming. I was thinking that at this point and time we wouldnt have a 1 person recruiting class 7 players on the roster.
I understand lacy, cat and even Abu going pro. Understand transfers – don’t understand having 3 big guys on roster (now 2) for next year and no back up pg.

choppack1ParticipantAdditional thoughts:
– we have 3 fewer players than when gott took over
– if you are going to be very tight with your scholarship allocation, you can’t afford to have a lot of attrition. (This is probably where Gott has been hurt most.) Right now, Gott only has enough food to eat twice a day and about half of that food goes bad or is in storage. (His tummy is growling from hunger pains.)choppack1ParticipantOk – I did a quick memory jog on a spreadsheet and from what I can tell Gott’s biggest problem isn’t retention, it’s being tight with scholarship offers.
Right now, out of 47 possible seasons from his recruits, he’s gotten 27 seasons…not good, but from what I can tell – somewhere within the average.
However, the big issue is that he’s been carrying scholies in his pocket AND he’s used 4 scholies on transfers (which means they count toward allocation but are not in the court their first year.)
Going into 2013 and 2014, he had 4 scholarships available (I think).
Going into 2015 and this year, he had 3 available (I think)
Heading into next year – we have 5 available. So again, Gott’s biggest problem so far is not filling out his roster. Sadly, one of the lessons apparently took away from Bama, was to be more selective with scholarships. I think he has over-compensated.
choppack1ParticipantPlywood – that definitely wasnt Hess calling him out.
Speaking of officials – how bout heels being in the bonus under 6 minutes into the second half.
choppack1ParticipantI can see Grady talking to Gott now…” The twins have been very naughty, if i may be so bold…you must correct them.”
choppack1ParticipantIf that the case Yow should have been fired and Gott fired together immediately after the hiring.
choppack1ParticipantBill – accountability works both ways though. Just as kids are accountable for their actions a coach is responsible for his.
When a coach doesn’t recruit sufficient depth – he is accountable. AMD gott because of his past and his inability in 5 years go get better than an 8 seed – regardless of early departures – absolutely should enter 2016-2017 squarely on the hot seat.
As others have indicated – we are preparing to enter a new age in the ACC – we will have a great opportunity for titles and program growth under the right guy.
UVa and Notre Dame can be confident. I am not.
choppack1ParticipantThanks Manu – I think swimming actually makes for great television.
There’s a guy who swims at my local y who medaled in the 96 Olympics (from Cuba) – fun watching those guys swim.
choppack1ParticipantI don’t think k it’s fair to accuse Gott of lying to recruits. We don’t know of that’s the case. E en those who left the program in a huff haven’t said Gott lied to them regarding their role.
Again, it shouldn’t matter the “why” this is happening. What matters is that it is and he is accountable no matter what happens when we get to this season – injuries, bad luck or bad calls. His defiencies in personnel management have left us extremely susceptible for the expected breaks that wreck even teams that have maximimized personnel issues.
choppack1ParticipantThanks Manu – 18 seconds for 50 m free is insane…is this televised anywhere?
choppack1ParticipantPIR – I hope he comes back, that said, I am pretty sure he and everyone else under the sun knows his limitations… He’s hoping to hear an NBA team (and it just takes 1) – say, we like you, we think you’re ready. And he’s gone -/and if you haven’t figured I out, I think about hlaf of NBA GM’s are certifiable, so I imagine it’s 50 / 50.
On another note, it’s been forever since I have seen a t called on a dunk like UMD’s layman did. Very odd.
choppack1ParticipantRegarding recruiting – sometimes no names fall into your lap – like a del negro or a gugliotta. Like a lightly recruited kid who is your son’s best friend. The guy with the natty didn’t wait around until it was too late when he had scholies to burn, the other is watching his son’s best friend play starting 2 guard for a 1 seed.
But Yow likes Gott’s swagger..the man would have been money at the 5th season back in the day or that club in the big hotel on falls of the nurse/old wake forest road across the street from the north Raleigh hospital.
choppack1ParticipantRoo – gott has v’s swagger, but he doesn’t recruit or adapt like V.
Here’s another thought… You reap what you sow. When you have 3 consecutive years of clear and obvious no 1 options, when you build a team around offense (me, me, me) rather than the selfless act of defense – well, teams are a reflection of their coach right?
I have said it before – it is to Gott’s credit that he appears to recruit good kids, but when these kids leave in droves….
choppack1ParticipantYea bill – if Abu doesn’t come back – and you have to think there’s at least a decent chance he won’t – then yea.
This year suddenly looks worse than last year – thing is, this is exactly what happened to him at Bama -/combined with some off court shenanigans.
choppack1ParticipantI always thought it was hilarious that the message boards dismissed tdt’s comments. One person had this man as a basketball coach his last 2 season, the other party didn’t play one minute with him…yet, some were confident they knew better than his first hand experience.
choppack1ParticipantDoes it matter? This is why I called bs on the “lacy surprise.” Who cares? You know when excuses are valid – if you don’t make them every damn season.
With this departure, I can already hear the excuses now. It doesn’t matter – gott should be judged on his record…not given a pass when these surprises happen on consecutive years. He deserves a chance to coach this team next season – he should be fired if he misses the tournament. We should consider firing him if he doesn’t have better than 7 seed.
choppack1ParticipantGood bye depth!!
choppack1ParticipantYep – bjd – good point… That may be the available job right now.
choppack1ParticipantWow. Tough day. Ken Howard (of white Shadow fame) and Fife (from a tribe called quest) also died today.
choppack1ParticipantTau – I think that each situation is different. In the case of gott at Bama, howland at UCLA and Barnes @ Texas – the returns had started to diminish.
I don’t think Gott has reached that point yet here. I do think the worst thing gott can do next year is eek into the tourney with a seed somewhere between 7-11. This will fracture the fan base and create apathy
It’s his 6th year – he’ll need to do something that shows he can have a very good season…. Read: top 25 ranking going into or coming out of acc tournament.
choppack1ParticipantTau – only one coach on your list hasn’t made a final 4.
choppack1ParticipantSee – we’re in the herb doldrums and we don’t even know it…(or maybe we do.)
Next year is critical. As I have indicated before – if he can’t string together a 6 seed or better – we know what we gott.
I think a good comparison is actually Mike Brey. Here’s a guy who after years of coaching, seems to have found his groove. Then again, his program relies upon retention and spreading out the court. Gott’s biggest problem is his hesitancy to use scholies. They have had us very vulnerable the last 2 years. Last year, it didn’t prevent us from having a decent season – this year – well it did.
As for the “why” – I don’t care. Next year, we will have better depth if gott and yow don’t get surprised again.
choppack1ParticipantI think this is likely a get out while the getting is good move by Dixon.
You could do much worse than Kruger.
I am not sure about Turgeon…if he continues his rum that will say a lot. However, I think he’s going up against 1 of the 2 best teams in the tournament.
choppack1ParticipantHaha – nice bill. Definitely some truth to that..but using the wife analogy – I don’t know if I want to marry someone whose husband already kicked her to the curb, especially if ethical shortcomings played a role in it.
But then again, once you have tied the knot – best not to bail for petty differences
