choppack1Participant
Do you really want me to throw Jamie Knox out there….then there was Mike Bell 1…Tevin Binns.
Good call on Dinky though.
choppack1ParticipantNcsu – what it is is a year to effectively determine what Gott can do with all the pieces in place. (Assuming they stay in place.)
He has put himself and the program in a very good position next year. We will know what he can do with it. It’s something to be thankful and content about. If we don’t have some kind of breakthrough next year, it’s hard to argue we ever will.
If we do, well, perhaps Gottfried has learned his lessons from Bama and here in Raleigh.
choppack1ParticipantDurn straight. It is an unethical arms war where tons of $$ is generated for the rest of the sports at a school and the best “producers” don’t get paid squat.
Funny, college sports as we know it would cease to exist if the athletes were allowed to test the “free market”.
choppack1ParticipantPaki- did you edit that ordid I miss it…I thought you used “hawk” or “Jonathan”. Regardless, nice find and it is good to hear he is doing well and still balling.
And you ain’t in your 40s or don’t have a great useless memory if you don’t remember Harold Thompson (aka Lorenzo Charles II)
choppack1ParticipantJohnny Thomas Packfanistan – from Greensboro Day School…he had 2 major knee injuries and was thought to be done…now he is playing for the globe trotters. thanks for linking.
I thought you meant Jimmy V recruit Harold Thompson.
Regarding bi-polarity – of course State fans are. You can’t say everything works out in the end because as this year shows – it certainly doesn’t. And let’s just say that our “highs” haven’t exactly been earth shattering the last few decades.
That kind of yo-yoing between utter disaster and mediocrity does lend itself to the “when is the anvil” going to fall on my head mindset.
choppack1ParticipantThis is really a stupid exercise.
You can’t objectively rank guys from lower-tier conferences. You have zero data on which to rank them in comparison to others.
I have a huge problem with Jimbo ranking ahead of Dabo (haha). Dabo has done an amazing job @ Clemson – winning an ACC title and taking them to a bcs bowl game. While Jimbo has done a solid job, I don’t think he accomplished what Dabo does at Clemson and I am confident Dabo could match his results at FSU.
05/20/2016 at 6:24 PM in reply to: NC State Basketball Scholarship Distribution & Discussion #103755choppack1ParticipantTau – speaking for myself – I think it’s just very difficult to forget Gott’s decade at Alabama and his inability to capitalize on the opportunity of his 2nd year.
He deserves credit – and even if Yurt didn’t sign – the opportunity to coach these kids for next year.
The questions for Gott are really 2 fold:
1) will things fall apart here the way they fell apart at Alabama.
2) if they don’t – can he establish State as an elite program again. He definitely has the moxie – and in he definitely doesn’t prevent his kids (a la herb Sendek) from doing good things on the basketball court through micromanagement.
Next year is critical. It’s pretty obvious to me that if we had accomplished more in Gott’s tenure, we wouldnt have missed on some of these bigger fish to the sharks.
As we found ourselves in year 2 and year 4, Gott has assembled a roster that is talented enough to win a national championship.
I certainly don’t expect one. I think a great coach would either finish in the ACC top 4 ( not tied), the ACC championship or better than the NCAA sweet 16.
choppack1ParticipantAbu and Anya returning is great news for next year!!!
This insures at the minimum a solid post presence regardless of Yurtseven’s Eligibility status. If cleared, we look like a monster.
What a difference a week makes. We are on the good side of the Gott-coaster again.
choppack1ParticipantJeremy – this guy is much more skilled than Bam and should be a better college player.
In terms of talent acquisition – again with that caveat of him being eligible – this gives all those necessary all of the necessary information to make a decision. If he can put together a great season – read the following:
1) top 4 ACC regular season finish
2) ACC tournament title
3) elite 8 or betterIf he can do one of those 3 – there is no way in the world to justify firing him for on the court results after next year.
choppack1ParticipantGreat news!! Now, on to the clearing house.
We can say what we want about his coaching and recruiting philosophy, but if Yurtsven plays for the Pack this year, it will be the 2 most impressive signees (Smith and Yurt7) that I can recall.
05/15/2016 at 8:30 PM in reply to: Russell Wilson's Commencement Speech AKA Ramblings Of A Lunatic #103409choppack1ParticipantI have no idea what was discussed between these 2 men…funny, I don’t think rw’s version is that off from the one we have heard…and what was evidently in TOB’s mind early on.
I think it’s the classic case of 2 guys doing what they believe is best for them. Hopefully, RW will do a better job of fact checking in his next speech, as these kind of embellishments can damage your credibility – and I believe that’s really important for him
choppack1ParticipantI don’t know how you read that article and come away thinking that cat had a problem with Gott. That’s a bit of a stretch unless there are hidden pages or something.
choppack1ParticipantState44 – given Yow’s and our adminstration’s tepid response to the going ons in Chapel Hill my only logical conclusion is that we don’t have firm ground to stand on ourselves in that regard. Also, all things being equal – given their post season success vs. Ours, they will choose the schools you just mentioned.
choppack1ParticipantAs it should be Jeremy – these guys aren’t endentured servants.
I imagine these kids want 3 things:
1) develop their game so they can make a living at it professionally.
2) play for championships.
3) playing time
For some, they probably even want a good college education and college experience. If 2 of those first 3 aren’t happening, it’s a perfectly understandable position to seek greener pastures. If Gottfried doesn’t start showing he can win championships and / or develop 3 and 4 star guys a little better, he will continue to miss out on the Bam’s, Camille’s and Devonte’s of the world and the Martin’s, Washington’s et al will continue to depart.
The task is almost impossible, but he is getting paid good money to do it and since he has been here 5 different schools have win the ACC championship.
Getting Hicks is a good start, but we need Abu back, and we need the Turk. Even if we get these guys, we need to become better defensively. As long as Gott is here and has decent talent, we will have a puncher’s chance against almost anybody. But it needs to be sustained to cut down some nets.
choppack1ParticipantEaten by a coyote? Oh, that was in the desert wasnt it?
choppack1ParticipantDammit – that is awful. Horrendous disease that seems to target athletes at a higher rate. Boys and girls, we should be thankful for healthy bodies and minds, because we won’t always have them. Wolfpack nation is praying for you and your family Chris Combs

But I actually think that would be a great response…assuming Geno and Anson dont try it first.
choppack1ParticipantPackphanistan – blame it on the phone, I always do.
choppack1ParticipantYes packphanistan – context is important… Which is why I provided the additional context that in fact 50% of the teams in the “higher” play-in game advanced to the round of 32. I believe 50% of those that advanced to the round of 32 advanced to the sweet 16…
In other words, while we may have been “tired” – we wouldnt have been doing anything special if we had held on.
Like you, I don’t consider the loss a huge black mark on his resume.
I do consider it a “black mark” that the reason he hasn’t more ACC tournament success isn’t because we didn’t have the talent, but rather were “gassed” after playing one more game than our opponent that we lost to in all 5 years.
Like a procrastinating student studying for an exam, Gottfried’s teams have had to deal with the stress of going into the tournament squarely on the bubble for 3 of his 4 tournament bids.
I suspect if we can get a big man or two on the roster next year, we will dance again. Will we have a top 4 seed in the ACC tournament? Will we have a Top 6 seed in the NCAA tournament?
choppack1ParticipantPackphanistan – what’s your point? From what I can tell 1 of these 2 teams in the non-16 seed games advance to the 2nd round.
I agree – we were fatigued. We had pretty much been on the bubble that year for 10 weeks. However, good teams DO overcome that.. Heck, solid teams overcome that. Gottfried’s teams couldn’t finish that year because of the same reason his teams haven’t been able to advance past the semi’s in the ACC tournament…they don’t perform at a high enough level in the regular season to overcome their lack of depth / consistency of execution in the tournament.
However, give him credit – this “we just don’t have enough gas in the tank” thing has been keeping him from great things since he arrived at NC state and apparently durin his decade at Alabama. I guess he should ask Leonard Hamilton, Bennet, and Laranaga how they can do it in the ACc. He should ask Shaka, Cuonzo, and Gregg the same thing regarding the NCAA s.
choppack1Participantso that’s why we never won relays.
choppack1ParticipantThere old days and there are OLD DAYS …ahh, the beer with the taste for food.
The Milwaukee Braves were before my time. As a tike, I had a poster of Hank Aaron’s record breaking home run (one of my most vivid dreams was when it came to life.) And I remember the “never say die Braves” well…guys like bob horner, Claudel Washington, Dale Murphy and the catcher (bruce Benedict?)
choppack1ParticipantIs he related to the Mendoza for whom the term originated?
Regarding the old Braves days, I remember Pete and Skip (or maybe it was Sutton and skip) talking about Raphael Belliard(who was from the Dominican Republic) and his propensity to swing at about every pitch…”no one walks off the island. “
choppack1ParticipantBill – that ain’t on the players is it? Nd seriously, when was the last time we had a player in any major sport academically ineligible.
choppack1ParticipantFor perspective, no Gottfried 4 year recruit has lasted 4 years yet. Granted, he has only been here 5 years and is heading into his 6th season. But hey, Freeman and Anya may just be the first.
