Rye – it isn’t that he doesn’t like zone it’s that our zone makes our man to man look like the the basketball version of the 85 Chicago Bears D. (In other words, it specialises in giving up open 3’s and offensive rebounds, while not creating turnovers.)
choppack1ParticipantIf he shats in the bed and loses out or perhaps 4 of 5 this year. Else, let him coach a veteran team next year.
After Clemson, as painful as it was, we know that we are close.
And yes, this game was Mike o’cain bad – bit remember, 3 years after that game, we beat them 24-7 and moc didn’t get fired because he couldn’t beat great teams. He got fired because he couldn’t beat UNC.
Blowouts happen. Did you really think we were going 1-1 in this stretch.
Bjd – if that loss hurt you like that how do you think it made the team and coaches feel? Again, this season and perhaps dd’s tenure with come down to these next 5 games
choppack1ParticipantHeck ; look at Auburn – Arkansas… Arkansas is down 21-0 and it’s only ghe the first half.
choppack1ParticipantTAT – again, a little perspective.
When has nc state had 3 consecutive games like this – ever?
Last week, UT lost to Alabama 49-10 in flipping Knoxville.
What is much more important is how we faire in our final 5 games. Going into this year, I had the success / failure mark as 4-4 in conference / 7-5 overall.
And that was before Louisville emerged as the best offensive team in football with the odds on Heisman favorite.Let’s not act like the petulant children at pack pride.
choppack1ParticipantThanks Bill.
Onto BC. Really, that’s all that matters.
Some historical perspective – only time in nc state history when we have played 2 top ten teams on the road back to back.
choppack1ParticipantNot happy – but we could see this happening… however, I didn’t see the offense being so bad in the first half. I think that’s really what sunk us.
BC comes at a perfect time.
Most importantly – any word on Dayes’ injury?
choppack1ParticipantWell. This stinks. Mack is right. We are exhausted. I think it was smart to rest Finley and Dayes. At least I hope they are resting. I think next time starters do something positive, you rest em up.
I would also start running sweeps to the Louisville sidelines with a hope of getting petrino caught up in the scrum.
choppack1ParticipantAbsolutely cowdog.
The notre Dame and Clemson games have been a revelation. We had heard/read that our DL was stout – but seeing in both of those games, well we know how some of those farms feel when they see the horses gallop and see their splits and say “by golly, we gott something.”
We may not be ready to race against the best in breed yet every week, but the correct reaction to these last 2 weeks should put a lot of folks on notice… because we definitely should be ready for the big tracks like Del Mar.
(If you can’t tell I haven’t felt this good about the future of football since we were up 7 vs. GA Tech.) You don’t want to serve whine before it’s time and you don’t want to push your young horse too hard – so sit back and hope that the progress we’ve seen evident these last 2 weeks is as legit ad it looks and that it continues.
choppack1ParticipantCowdog – first off – top notch writing.
Personally, I think that if we have anywhere near the energy, focus and physicality of last week’s game, the wolfpack Represent a Spectacular Bid. However, there is Genuine Risk here – as Louisville ventures into the red zone and scores more red zone TD’s than anyone in college football.
As good as the offense was last week – this week’s is better. Of course, we know the value of transitive properties here. They don’t apply.
What we do know is that the Wolfpack is competitive nationally in the trenches, behind center and in the backfield. The question remains, can the DB’s, WR’s and LB’s perform at the level they did last week…and can everything about the kicking game (that includes player and coaching execution) – come together for their best effort yet? If we don’t, we’ll be lucky to even feel like Alydar.
Personally, I think that last week Affirmed DD’s efforts as a personnel recruiter and a pre-game prepper. The game management represents room for improvement, but there are very few Triple Crown winners around.
My coaching outlook, especially for football, is decidedly big picture. And while, I’d love the win, place or show in this game, like last game, I just want to be close at the final turn.
10/17/2016 at 12:54 PM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108463choppack1ParticipantRegarding clock management at the end of the game – it was damn close to perfect. It would have been perfect if we had a stronger kicking game.
Unfortunately, we don’t and the staff knew that going in. We had budgeted time and time outs to seek a td. It’s definitely a close call as to what to do. Still, if you have a kid that you know is struggling, that’s a tough position to put him in and you probably need to throw the percentages out the window. (Because from the % pov, it was probably the right call.) But percentages are relative – and there was no way to create that cauldron he was facing Saturday afternoon.
I hope Bambard can overcome this. If you have played sports you know what an awful feeling it is when you have a moment and let it slip away.
10/16/2016 at 7:59 AM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108432choppack1ParticipantAnd I think DD’s strength as a long term planner, his decision making outside of the cauldron of the 60 minute game, his methodical building and his personal integrity outweigh that weakness.
Coaches are human, they have strengths and weaknesses. The question is always can their strengths outweigh their weaknesses enough to be effective.
10/16/2016 at 7:54 AM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108431choppack1ParticipantAgain, if you have a kicker who is struggling..it is probably not the best choice to leave the game up to a field goal.
I understood the rationale – but it comes back to a problem i have with DD, given 2 choices in the heat of the battle, he often chooses the worst one.
It’s important to clarify that this doesn’t mean I think he is incapable of being an effective coach for nc state. It just means I see this as a weakness for him. He clearly has other strengths – and you can see the progress this program has made is remarkable.
Now the wheels may fall off, but otherwise I think the program’s is heading in the right direction.
10/15/2016 at 9:01 PM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108419choppack1ParticipantI have been critical of last minute… however, it needs to be emphasized – the staff did a super job building this roster and assembling talent that can hang with notre Dame and Clemson in the trenches and did a good job gameplanning.
If it meant something, I would give a handshake and hug to everyone on this team, coaches and players. They did something great today – now, we build on it.
10/15/2016 at 8:23 PM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108412choppack1ParticipantFoose – not directed at you at all. Your response is reasonable, you seem to understand that he has done the best he has with the tools that he has been given… until proven otherwise.
As I said to someone after the game…this is why if you are a kicker, you bust your butt in the weight room, the class room and in practice – if you do that, there is zero excuse whatsoever for your teammates and fans not supporting you.
10/15/2016 at 8:05 PM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108406choppack1ParticipantI am just going to say this…if you are attacking the kicker, that the lowest of the low. Again, unless you have some info that indicates this kid has a substandard work ethic or morals, it is on the guys who collect the paycheck.
Again, you don’t leave a 60 minute game on the kicker…when you have other alternatives. Treat him like you would your own child, that’s all.
10/15/2016 at 7:37 PM in reply to: Show Us Where the Bad Howard's Rock Touched You Game Thread #108395choppack1ParticipantBoys and girls, this was an epic heartbreaker. However, through it all, the team and staff showed we are ready to compete.
I don’t put this one on the kicker. If you look back at my post before the game, this was the scenario I worried about.
Great job getting the kids and prepping them, but not maximizing the opportunity at the end.
Personally, I think with a kicker who has been inconsistent, you try to get the ball in the end zone. In the immortal words of someone, never leave it up to the kicker.
Here’s where the kid’s work ethic and attitude will either save him ot bury him. If this kid put in the time onnthe practice field, weight room and classroom – his teammates and coaches better rally the heck around him.
As for the staff, while I didn’t agree W the the last possession, I think the game plan was fantastic – and I can see that, yes, we are building something.
Louisville isn’t as important as the rest of the way home. We need to get to at least 4 wins in conference.
This is all about building on a very solid, yet ultimately disappointing outcomes.
choppack1ParticipantCowdog – ain’t that the truth. The crowd ain’t nearly as well-oiled either
But guess what – they do allow half-time pass-outs.
choppack1ParticipantCowdog – I agree that we can shock the world.
The Notre Dame game was big because we beat a name opponent, with the talent to beat us and as you rightly pointed out, in challenging conditions, giving us arguably the biggest victory in DD’s tenure.
Our key will be somehow to hold the Tigers to field goals and keep them under 30. DD’s squads have done a decent job of protecting the ball in non-hurricane conditions, and that will be critical again Saturday.
We play a great game, they play a bad one and our staff doesn’t commit headscratchers inside the Clemson 45 and we have a shot.
Clemson often lets less talented teams hang around. Maybe they will do that with us and their luck will run out.
choppack1ParticipantPackplanth – you, the other farmers and those harmed and still in harm’s way have my thoughts and prayers.
Bill – nicely said. These 2 jackwagons deserve each other but we the people nominated them. It takes a hell of a man to make Hillary look reasonable. Thanks locker room!
choppack1ParticipantRthomas…the games are all for the almighty dollar without regard for public safety.
Large events always have an element of danger and plenty of people stayed home. Some of us got our rain gear on and had a great time and have great memories.
This doesn’t mean I don’t have sympathy and concern for those impacted in the worst way.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – that’s what I am thinking. Looking at our problems last year, we were basically able to stop everyone but Clemson, UNC, FSU and Mississippi state.
I think our game Saturday showed that if you negate the speed advantage and passing game, this D is just fine, if not above average. My biggest concern is that I don’t see any of those “speed guys” in the pipeline that allow us to slow down the explosive offenses, nor have I seen anything that indicates the staff will deviate significantly from their base d.
choppack1ParticipantBill – regarding defense, IMHO, our problem is on the edges. We have strength in the middle – which is the key to stopping the most basic play in football, but we struggle in pass coverage and at times letting good running qbs get out of the pockets.
To a certain extent, the way college defenses are defined – we have good college football defense…we stop the run – more or less. We struggle with the spread but so does everyone else (not named Bud Foster)….and we struggle with running qbs who can throw effectively.
Next week will be interesting. Will we put up a fight or will it be a less embarrassing version of 2 years ago.
choppack1ParticipantGame was tons of fun. We won a slobber-knocker with the domers and I hope a lot of folks on the southeast got to enjoy it in thecomfort of their own home.
Funny that Kelly thought that this was just going to be a bunch of rain and his qb would throw for 300 yards like he did vs Clemson. I guess he learned the difference today between playing in a lot of rain and playing in a lot of rain and a hurricane.
I also like that be basically made an ultimatum and had to eat some crow.
Props to the fans who attended…I was there and in spite of executing my bad weather plan perfectlyi didn’t meet the expected results.
choppack1ParticipantSo. Ultimately this is one of the most satisfying games of the dd era, if not the most. Certainly, the most satisfying home game.
Lots of fun today. The conditions were absolutely brutal. I have been to most of the bad weather games and for sustained misery, this took the cake.
Hopefully, this is the game that turns around the dd era.
Funny thing, I never thought I’d see the day when we would dominate a school like notre Dame in the trenches… but make no mistake about it, this game wasnt nearly as close as score.
And this brings us to the cruxt of the problem with him. He does a good job recruiting, a good job prepping his team and a relatively good job prepping our band.
Now for the coaching…we saw some questionable cLlz. In
