Yea Roo.
Hindsight is 20/20…like Gott, he had huge question marks. In Gott’s case – you knew he could coach, but his ceiling was pretty well established and he had shown an inability to sustain success.
With Doeren it was more of a question if he was capable of building. Ideally, you would find a coach who had built the proverbial business AND succeeded at a better rate than the man he replaced. While DD clearly moved NI forward, he essentially got rich from inherited money.
The NC State gig was a different manner entirely. I would hope that her contacts reached out to Fleck and asked “uh, hey, why did you bolt 1 day after accepting the OC job at NI. Did it have anything to do with DD?”
Sheridan advanced (he replaced cleric’s boy Art Baker) and he sustained. He was also familiar with the region. These are all good things.
Certainly, every situation is different and of there was a way to predict what coaches would be successful, most smart AD’s would mimic it (I do think Deb Yow is pretty sharp)… however, for my money, I would feel more confident about the future of a program if I could find a proven builder AND sustainer.
choppack1ParticipantI think game is on go pack tonight. Of course, all of us itching to get a peak will probably crash the server.
Looking forward to this year, we have tons of talent, very little of it proven to produce on a consistent level in big time college basketball. I haven’t seen this level of talent since, gulp, we had cj Leslie, Lo Brown, Ryan Harrow, Richard Howell, Painter, Scott Wood, etc.
We should be good and come January we can throw all kinds of lineups at teams – V would love this line-up.
choppack1ParticipantWow. What. Roller coaster.
choppack1ParticipantYea BJD – I always thought that if we had hired that dude with Gardner’s hat 5 years earlier we would have been much happier with the results. We got a staff and coach who knew what they were doing they were just old and I doubt football was as important to them in the last few years at Raleigh as it may have been or they may not have had the same energy.
choppack1ParticipantFired predecessors I might add.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – regarding the domers and Kelly vs strong and Doeren…keep in mind that unlike both strong and Doeren, he has clearly passed the results of his predecessors. Strong and Doeren are historically bad for their respective institutions…that can all change – at least in Doeren’s case if things go the right way, but one guy clearly resurrected the program, if only for a few years, while the others are trying to meet the results of their predecessors.
choppack1ParticipantDang cow – you are good…I would be shocked if we got to 7-6 even.
choppack1ParticipantThat’s the problem aint it.
Funny, I saw a blurb that DD was 2-4 against P5 schools + ecu and Notre Dame in games less than 1 score. Bump that up to 8 which reflects the opportunity to tie and he is 2-5.
Now here’s where you run into the query of – well, we are in more close games right? Remarkably, in his first 3 years we were in 3 close games with the same category of schools. So, in a weird way, it’s improving.
The next 4 should tell us all we need to know. Are we on a slow, but real road to improvement – ie Sendekian progress….or have we seen the summit of the DD era? (Year 2).
I still can’t get over his implication that our squad had to execute to perfection to beat a team with a 12 game conference losing streak.
choppack1ParticipantI really like the idea of Des being interim hc. We may get to see that next year of he doesn’t exit the sinking ship. I guarantee you – any of our desirable assistant coaches are gone if DD survives if a more stable situation presents itself.
choppack1ParticipantCof89 – and it should.
He has 4 games to right the ship. That’s more than he deserves…if in fact, Des Kitchings has “it” – give him the rains ASAP so we can keep some good ballers and build on something for next year. I would actually go that far the second we get to the 5 loss mark. At this rate, Syracuse looks like that moment.
choppack1ParticipantBill – I like the idea of the re-branding of our football operations. Heck, that is the de facto status of the program now. Perhaps the higher ups know that this is why people stroll into the game late, leave at halftime, join mid to late thru 3rd quarter only to leave again.
I have noticed more empty spots and less enthusiasm than we have seen in the past. 3-11 at home in conference for the las years has a way of making folks focus on the more important things in life. Friends, family and food.
People also don’t like being told their poop smells by someone whose own bathroom habits have caused you to go to Costco to buy the industrial size air-freshners. The guy probably has a point, but perhaps he needs to remove the stick in his eye before worrying about the eyes of others.
choppack1ParticipantIt was obvious after the 0-8 conference start in year 1 that we didn’t have a coach who could scheme or inspire his troops to victory.
The hope after that season was that he could amass enough talent and / or grow enough as a head coach to be successful.
After the Clemson game, it looked like perhaps he had accumulated enough talent to get this program where it needed to be.
Most of us base our opinions on certain assumptions. My assumption since his second season was that while he would almost always lose to more talented teams and probably more often than not lose to teams with relatively equal talent, he would pretty much have his way with the dregs.
That assumption was shattered yesterday and along with that assumption being shattered, it pretty much eliminates any optimism in my mind that he can ever be more than a 3-5 coach in our conference.
The only good news is that the conference season is only half done for us. He can still get us to 4-4 or 5-3..5-3 being the sad high water mark of the last 22 years – that would put him on a one season par of our last 2 fired head coaches. He would still have a lot of work to do to catch Amato and TOB in their conference marks.
(Dont worry Dave you have already wrapped up the low water mark of zero wins in conference, a mark that you alone share in my lifetime.)
choppack1ParticipantI don’t know roo.
5 years ago after walking out of Carter Finley – after a wolfpack route of bc – into a parking lot where the high dollar spots were virtually empty…I told my wife that tob would be fired.
Keep in mind – with that WIN – we had just gone 4-4 in the acc – the 4th time in 5 years we had been at least .500 in conference. But the wins of November were blowing – and it was semi-cold and well, even when the game kinda meant something – this meant nothing.
DD, IMHO, is now coaching for his job. He wins 3 of 4 and he keeps it and builds momentum. We wins 2 of 4 and I can’t call it. He wins less, there’s no excuse to keep him on board.
My question in that event to deb Yow would be:
Name the last nc state coach to have 4 losing conference records in a row.
choppack1ParticipantWell it is beginning to look like the fluke of this season was @ Clemson.
If Dd doesn’t get to 4-4 (which at this point would be a miracle)…he will be the least successful nc state coach since Tom Reed. Think about that.
choppack1ParticipantRoo – I don’t know how many are true pack fans or are the corporate kind. Like you, I think something could be done. I do know if I had 6 figures to throw away, I would entertain the investment, not sure how often I would go.
choppack1ParticipantPapaJohn – can’t really do this. I imagine most have paid the ltrs – and those ain’t being replaced. I do like an “upgrade” policy.
And I think they may try something but I doubt mucb more effort or $$ is put in it.
choppack1ParticipantVa Wolf – yea. The attendance “issues” will be solved, but it will still look bad on TV and for the majority of the games will still feel like a mausoleum
choppack1ParticipantAnd see basspacker – That’s the problem isn’t it.
Of course, in the acc of our youth the games were played in Reynolds, Cameron and Carmichael. Arenas that were special even for mediocre games…and yep, a lot smaller.
Football, OTOH, you only have 6 home games…and they are either on weekends or Thursday night. The event is much more enjoyable.
choppack1ParticipantAgreed with the comments on the size of the arena.
I have said it before and I will say it again, the worst thing that happened to nc state was coupling the arena with the canes.
Not only did we get an arena that wasn’t totally ours, it was built to host hockey which means even durn good seats (and expensive ones) are far from the action. It’s a monstrosity and has created an embarrassing situation – and has reduced the special feeling that nc State basketball once had.
Hopefully the canes bolt soon or get their downtown arena and we can make it something that is more of a fit for nc state.
I used to have season tickets and i can honestly say I don’t miss a minute of it. I live in Winston and it’s quite an obligation even to do a “wolf” or “pack” package. And those seats were too far away for a 2 hour trip in a half empty arena.
choppack1ParticipantIn the spirit of “never”…never has the old adage (which I believe cowdog himself has repeated) – what game is the most important? The next one.
As bad as las week was, it will be nothing but a distant memory if we win 3 or more of our next 5 games.
We lose this game and things will get ugly. We win this game and the atmosphere will be festive on the 5th.
BC is good enough defensively to hang around (one of the best in the country) and our offense has to play much better than it did vs Louisville for the first 2 quarter or we could be heading for humiliation.
Sadly enough for bc – we may be the offense they have played to date so look out.
choppack1ParticipantWhiteshoes – one of the best ways to pick up the pace is with pressure defense. If you don’t pressure on D, you don’t create turnovers and you are more likely to encounter a set defense which prevents transition buckets which are the easiest in basketball.
Gottfried’s half court sets are pretty good. But I think we’d all like to see better defense and see our d generate more to’s.
choppack1ParticipantI am more worried about the chemistry of the team. Lots of good college players and 2 lottery picks.
Defense will always be a concern with Gott. However, imho, our key is rebounding. If we can keep teams off the offensive boards and avoid stupid fouls, we will be fine.
This year will tell us a lot about Gott’s ceiling. He has secured talent not seen in these parts for quite a while.
choppack1ParticipantSo true Packfanistan, so true.
The sad part, usually – we do take a nice step back, at least in short term.
choppack1ParticipantSo cow – is that the regular season #? I gotta figure if that was fire him now and get it over with.
With this schedule, I don’t know if Sheridan goes 8-4 regular season…or, were you predicting 4-8.
choppack1ParticipantSo, does that include bowl games?
I guess she was expecting him to go 4-4 in conference and 4-0 ooc.
I don’t think that was totally reasonable given our history unless she and her agent share fleck, Herman or miles’ agent.
