Yes bill but some are better at it than others. Gott is not one of the top 25 at his position. There is a reason he has coached in major conferences for 16 years and has 1 elite 8, and 3 or 4 sweet 16s, but nothing more.
He has a pretty consistent book of work. If we don’t get where we want to after this year, it certainly won’t be his fault if we don’t do any longer in his tenure. He has been given a great toolset. If he can’t build it this year…
choppack1ParticipantFastback – that’s a great story and probably true.
And that’s my problem with Gott. I just don’t see evidence that excellence is demanded and attention to detail is demanded.
I think he’s a good coach and I think he has patience with his pets. And I don’t think we will win a championship here. I hope I am wrong.
His teams absolutely improve as the year goes on, but I think a little improvement earlier would go a long way to get us in a better position to win those championships.
choppack1ParticipantCoach Rat absolutely hung his kids out today…
In fact, he does this annually around this time of year…Today he blamed it all on Grayson…
which is a whole other conversation…Remember that Dook game in the PNC, I think two years ago, when we blew their doors off? Rat sat with his arms crossed the whole second half. Game didn’t matter. He was prepping his kids for the Dance.
True. But I think that’s silly to compare Gott to Coach K. I guarantee you K demands more from his kids the second they set foot on the court for their first workout.
Let’s put it this way – Gott is in his 16th season coaching big-time basketball. In his 16th season, Coach K had won 2 natty’s, had 2 NCAA runner ups, and 2 final 4s.
Let’s just say that Gott ain’t no Coach K, he ain’t no Roy. If we’re lucky in terms of wins and losses he is a Gene Keady.
choppack1ParticipantWhat do you really expect the Coaches on the down side of the score to do once you’re half way thru the second half ???
True. This game was lost a long time ago. Probably in practice for dsjr and Yurtsven sometime in October. For Abu, Anya, Henderson’s, and Dorn it was lost every time they were allowed to loaf or not box out or not move their feet or commit a stupid foul in practice.
We may end up being great this season or another under Gott, but it will shock me. Like I said, the most likely outcome of this year is an ACC semifinal loss, an NCAA seed 7 or worse and another year of us bellyaching about calls, and watching the NCAA bubble.
It’s also amusing that Gott’s teams have to learn the hard way while other coaches in the conference and around the country can reach their kids before they are virtually eliminated from a top 4 NCAA seed.
choppack1ParticipantVintage gott ball on display here.
Miami has a very good basketball coach, we have a great recruiter.
We can’t use lack of talent as an excuse for our 7 seed or worse yet.
choppack1ParticipantGreat game last night in the orange bowl, sans the useless commentary by Steve Levy – we get it Jabril Peppers scratched at the last minute – it’s not the Cuban missile crisis.
Watching these games it’s obvious that a) we had a defense that was amongst the strongest in the country, especially in the dl and lbs b) our offense had a ton of talent c) given a and b we had the potential to be a top 25 team (and I might go as far as to say, potentially Top 15.)
I will also note that the Canes got it together at the end of the year and look poised to break through next year.
We blew an opportunity for a very fun year, next year, the sledding will be just as though. Hopefully, the team addresses the weaknesses in some form or fashion in the off-season.
choppack1ParticipantSo state did a better job of shutting down dLvin cook than Michigan did.
choppack1ParticipantGreat game. The men totally dominated. Funny, we haven’t been ranked that highly in recruiting, but darned if we haven’t been fine man to man (sans Louisville). Gives me hope for the future.
choppack1ParticipantSo. If you were to flip the TV and go “which team is the SEC school”…
choppack1ParticipantFinley has not been a picture of consistency today. Some good passes some bad.
What would game be like without 2 red zone fumbles.
And no answer for Jay Sam.
choppack1ParticipantUgh.
So far we look like the more talented team.
3 and out or a to would be nice.
choppack1ParticipantGlad it went OK Bill. Christmas here was pretty special. These are the salad years – with a 8 / almost 9 year old.
Trying to figure out what to do for the bowl game. Watch it here and deal with distractions of home or go to local pub and hope juke box knuckleheads don’t show up or watch it elsewhere.
choppack1ParticipantMerry Christmas Bill! One thing I know – as State fans, we are less at rick of worshipping the false athletic gods and we will likely inherit the earth.
And yes, Merry Christmas to all and peace.
choppack1ParticipantBotb – I hear you and I can relate. Hopefully, you and yours have a Merry Christmas and you enjoy your pops! (I enjoyed a few lsst night secure in the knowledge that today would be a low consumption day due to church stuff and trying to get my kid to stop acting like a maniac.)
Kids do make Christmas special again – but make it a lot more work.
And that Merry Christmas goes out to the entire statefans community. Hopefully, it is a safe and satisfying time..and hopefully, our country and state can find the civility that I believe we have here.
Peace.
choppack1ParticipantYea Bill. I read that and disagree. I doubt he would say the same thing about California, but such as it is with guys like this.
I got some scoop on what went down and let’s just say governor elect is now responsible for hb2 being the law of the land and his divisive comments afterwards prove that he has no intention of being a peacemaker for ALL North Carolinians.
choppack1ParticipantIn general, folks should be empathetic enough not to request politically-oriented gifts unless they are confident the giver shares the same passion.
It’s a bit like asking your atheist uncle to give to your church. And hey, I get the credit, so killing 2 birds with one stone. I get the rationale – if you are like me – if you dont have it, it’s either because you don’t want it or can’t afford it – so most of your gift givers can’t afford it either.
It would have been much more noble of these folks to request that you choose a local charity where confidence is high that the dollars are going directly to the intended recipient rather than activities that a significant % of the population may not support.
To teach a lesson botb – I would give to a legit charity in their name and use it as a teachable moment and see if theh return the favor. Hopefully, that can change hearts and minds, but kind of doubtful.
choppack1ParticipantYou should reciprocate and ask for a donation to the NRA
choppack1ParticipantAgreed Daniel Day – I wonder if the coach is still never prouder of his team. I wonder if team will issue a statement saying “uh, this wasn’t cool. This could have been our sister, mother, girlfriend or whatever…”
I have never understood the appeal of multiple guys “training” even if consent is clear. Not my idea of fun. OTOH – just me and several attractive and in shape females – I found very appealing.
choppack1ParticipantListened to game on the radio on the way back from upstate SC.
Sounds like offense was humming when we went inside and out. Sounds like we could have been better on the 3s but we did a great job on the defensive boards.
Overall, more positives to get excited about than negatives to stress over.
Yurt continues to impress as does DSJ. Great interview post game with Terry Henderson.
choppack1ParticipantI saw that. I couldn’t have blamed him for leaving – but that’s fantastic news!
choppack1ParticipantTrue Bill. There’s definitely an upside here.
Downside would be his tenure doesn’t time out right for us, but great for him.
choppack1ParticipantBeen a great game to watch.
Really like this roster. I wish they had more time together.
choppack1ParticipantBill – ain’t nothing wrong with multi culturalism…as long as the goal is the same.
Diversity for diversity’s sake is stupid.
Diversity as a result of merit and the desired same end goal = great
choppack1ParticipantBoys and girls – watch out. I think the light in terms of effort has come on.
I actually love the way Anya is playing. I saw the disappointm in his face earlier tonight when he was ignored at the foul line but he is engaged.
Dennis Smith It’s defense is great. I thought his defense last game was the turning point.
Omer looks much improved from exhibition games.
The key for this team will be love for each other, focus and defensive intensity.
choppack1ParticipantAnd this is where it gets interesting. Who was on the receiving end of this? If DD was a benefactor does this taint a third of his conference wins? Does it diminish “the character quotient”?
Hopefully, he is not on the benefactor list. He has done well vs the cuse and pretty good vs the heels. So, it’s not fair to think that this is the only reason they won or asterisk those.
I am only saying what I suspect most of us are thinking:
How does this impact Nc state. -
