choppack1Participant
I went for a long run @ 12:44… Definitely the right call.
Seriously, this talent is a total waste on a coach like Gott. Give Pitino these guys and they are a Top 10 squad. Under Gott it will take a minor miracle to make the tournament.
choppack1ParticipantLouisville excels @ making the opponents make mistakes. This is a game that with our talent we can win if we don’t turn the ball over and if we keep them off the boards.
These Pitino teams are polar opposite from Gott teams. They force turnovers through pressure defense and keep their opponents off the boards. They are great on the defensive end, adequate to ugly offensively.
Again, from a formula standpoint winning is easy vs this team. Louisville is the hard working guy in the office who busts his butt every day. We are the real bright guy leaving the office as soon the 8 hours are done, who doesn’t want to miss happy hour.
Are we capable of taking care of the ball and rebounding well enough to win 2 games in a row?
choppack1ParticipantSo maybe some of the old timers remember this….But there were a few games where Shackleford’s and Chucky’s jerseys looked like dresses.
They asked Coach V about this and he said that they never tucked their shirts in and it annoyed him. So V figured he would get the largest one they had and then they’d tuck it in…But like the prankster / carefree guys they were – they didn’t keep em tucked in and it looked pretty hilarious.

Without looking at their Kenpom I am wondering if they (UCLA) have that 20 point differential.
Also interesting that Creighton was so high – but we know their d ain’t all that and a bag of chips either.
choppack1ParticipantDefinitely sad news.
He was incredibly talented and a fun college player to watch…Part of basketball teams that just overflowed with personality.
Rest in peace original Shack.
choppack1ParticipantYea the – I don’t see a conference tournament title under Gott. In his 5 years here he has never won more than 2 tournament games in a row and he doesn’t manage his bench well enough to handle the current schedule.
Regarding Louisville, I think they may be missing 2 of their top 3 guards. However, they will still play hard.
We will have to be tough and protect the ball again. If we don’t get killed on the boards and we don’t turn it over we will win. Of course, of our 8 games we have done that 3 times so far.
choppack1ParticipantA few years ago a “Thursday win” was the play-in game, I guess it would be the 3rd round for the pack potentially. (I.e. a quarter finals win.)
choppack1ParticipantArkansas was 7-9 that year and made it to the championship that year beating Mississippi state and Vandy. (The SEC west was putrid that year with an 8-8 record winning the division. Looking at his sec record it appears he would have been a better hire than, well…)
I know we made the tourney when we lost to Duke in the semis after the Chris Paul nut punch and we had a losing record.
FSU made it one year with a 6-10 record, but I don’t think they made much noise in the ACC tournament that year.
Sendek’s first year and either his 3rd or 4th we got within a mention (on the show) but I didn’t watch the selection show with any expectation / anticipation of a bid.
Like you said, there’s a good chance this year someone in conference will have a record that would have likely excluded them from consideration that will pop up at least in the discussion on Sunday.
choppack1ParticipantI think we can do OK vs Louisville if we handle their pressure. Truthfully, they scare me less than anyone because of their offensive inconsistency.
But yes, you are correct – in that, similar to last year, Gottfried blew a chance at the post season in the first half of the year.
What would be “interesting” would be our status if we go the projected 7-11 and then win 2 or 3 tourney games. In such an event, I imagine our rpi would be slightly better than it is now so we’d go into selection Sunday with slight shot. (And you know Swofford would like to buy our continued silence regarding an ongoing NCAA issue.)
choppack1ParticipantYes Vawolf – I was hoping we wouldn’t have to pay attention to the bubble this year, but alas, it looks like if we make the tournament, it will come down to the last week or two of the season like our last 4 and that, if we are lucky – we’ll be in the 10-13 seed.
choppack1ParticipantIgnore our rpi for now.
If we win 6 out of next 10, we will be in. Win 5 out of 10 and we go I to the tourney on the bubble with work to do.
The NCAA has given hints it is going to start looking at more sophistimicated data….Like Kenpom and sagarin.
If we win 6 out of next 10 every metric will be fine. Else, we better have one heck of an ACC tournament.
choppack1ParticipantThoughts on the game:
Duke’s defensive style typically plays into our hands.
The biggest difference between this Gott team and others is that this has turned it over a lot. They didn’t do that last night and that was key.
For the most part we avoided stupid fouls.
Perhaps the best fortune was that we got the lead late and that had a shock factor. We didn’t have that pressure long.
As the last minute showed I am not sure how long we could have held onchoppack1ParticipantHappy for the kids and coaches. Great win and a few days to enjoy it…Much better than our last 2 performances on the road.
We tried to give it away, but that’s part of it.
As cow says, hopefully, this is the start of the rebound.

Here’s the thing…In year 6, what a coach is seeking to “build” and how he plans on building it is or at least should be pretty obvious.
Coming into this year, Gott scrambled and put together a very talented roster – with some talented pieces that were already returning. We were hoping against reality that year 5 was the fluke, that the reason we weren’t consistent was due to youth, injuries, bad attitudes and chemistry and bad officiating. Through it all, one thing has remained constant and the constant is the same as it was during his tenure at Bama – Gottfried.

Give him credit – he is screaming as loud as he can: “Get rid of me now!!!!”
01/21/2017 at 7:18 PM in reply to: Your “It’s Not Danny Manning’s Fault But I Still Don’t Like Him” WF Open Thread #115152choppack1ParticipantNope. We are getting exactly what was expected. Hiring Gott wasn’t stupid… Giving him a contract extension was.
01/21/2017 at 4:27 PM in reply to: Your “It’s Not Danny Manning’s Fault But I Still Don’t Like Him” WF Open Thread #115118choppack1ParticipantA) Danny Manning in his third or fourth year is already farther along in the actual program building phase than Gott.
B) Our d stinks as does our gameplan.
C) we need to play a lot of 4 guards and pressure.
D) Jamie Lucky is a first class jerk
E) The only way I want Gott to keep his job is I he specifically calls out Lucky on his post game press conference.
choppack1ParticipantYes Bill it takes about 1 more minute for guilt to set in if you keep watching the movie
01/20/2017 at 6:35 PM in reply to: Blatant Non-Sport. Should The Donald Push For The Legalization Of Marijuana? #114933choppack1ParticipantGott no problem with it. I don’t think it’s a panecea, but in general, the more freedom the better. As it is with the removal of any law/regulation there will be innocent victims negatively impacted by this new freedom, but it gets us closer to a place where the individual is held responsible for the damage the individual does.
choppack1ParticipantAnd I don’t mean that in a smart aleck way.
Now we just need to work for a good shot…And we did.
We are kind of facing our dopplegaggers in Pitt.
choppack1ParticipantGreat timeout by Gott.
choppack1ParticipantYep. This is kind of. Custer’s Last Stand game.
choppack1ParticipantAnd here’s the problem with both of Yow’s revenue hires:
Neither of them had a track record of any kind of sustained success.DD was a solid gamble – but he was being asked to take on a rebuilding operation. While he has not yet reached the record his predecessor had in his final season.
And yes, the jury is still out
For Gottfried, you had a coach who had to resign to do an awful combo of bad results and personal issues. Keep in mind, this isn’t a case of Petrino or Pitino or Eustace, guys who were winning and got in trouble for personal stuff – this was a case where the personal stuff just gave them the ammo they needed to avoid the handwringers and defenders in the media and on campus playing their usual game.
Coaches in this category rarely find success as the head guy at a higher level again. Steve Lavin flamed out quickly at St. John’s. I can’t think of others in a similar situation who have succeeded.
We were actually in position to leverage our best option – some other p5 school to swoop into Raleigh after year 1,2,3 or 4 to “steal” Gott.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and it looks like a Bama reduex
choppack1ParticipantI don’t think Gott survives this year unless this team turns it around. Translation: I believe Gott is let go at end of season.
choppack1ParticipantSurely we can find a reason to fire him for cause.
