choppack1Participant
Although he hasn’t messed up as bad as he did at Bama – it’s pretty obvious since year 2 that there’s an accountability issue.
You can be liked, but not respected. If one is a competitor, the lack of accountability likely drives them mad.
I don’t like to speculate on the “why” we are losing, but since year 2 it’s pretty obvious to me that Gott a) plays favorites b) those favorites can basically do what they want and c) that has a negative impact on most of the team – especially when it comes to doing the dirty work.
choppack1ParticipantI agree.
Obviously we don’t have the right guy…UVA has the right guy, Louisville has the right guy, Duke has the right guy, UNC has the right guy, Syracuse has the right guy, Larranaga and Hamilton are guys who put together solid seasons from time to time. Jury is out on Manning, and Pastner. Stallings is a more consistent version of Gott.
choppack1ParticipantAlias – this is year 6.
choppack1ParticipantYes BJD – I think you say that because you hate the idea of grinding it out thanks to the wood chopping of Sendek.
There is no dispute – defense wins championships. Good offenses can run cold – witness Duke against us. Of course, our coach – who always seems to think the offense could improve – but our defense is where it needs to be.
He’s like Don Coryell? (San Diego chargers ex coach.)
You have to have good d to be consistently good.
We don’t and never will under Gott unless he is subjected to a clockwork Orange type treatment…And who knows how that will turn out.
choppack1Participant2nd and 3rd Running back in football in football skipping a “technically” meaningless bowl game is an entirely different deal than a college basketball 1 year guy coming off a knee injury.
He needs to show NBA execs he can hold up under the demands of an 82 game schedule. As cow rightly indicates, all championships are still pending.
choppack1ParticipantThat’s what I told the visibly upset falcons bartender at the neighborhood pub….”I know exactly how you feel.”
choppack1ParticipantActually, this is good.
For those of us who wanted clarity on what the direction of the program would be under Gott of you removed talent and depth as excuses to why he hasn’t been able to take NC State to the next level….We have it.
There’s really no reason to keep him at this point is there?
This is what his 17th season coaching in a major conference? It’s utter insanity to believe he will accomplish something he hasn’t in those 16 other seasons.
choppack1ParticipantOK – let’s get out timelines straight when it comes to Sendek.
Year 1 miraculous turnaround after 0-8 start to conference that culminates in run to the championship game vs the dreaded Heels where we don’t have the legs to finish the job. Good feelings abound in wolfpack nation.
Years 2-3 – fail to capitalize on this. Year 4 – the year of the great collapse where we start 5-3 in conference only to lose our next 7 games before winning 2 in a row before another blown lead in the acc semis. We make a final 4 run to the nit where we collapse in both games to finish 4th.
Year 5 was awful but Herb signs a program changing class with key members have conditional Lois (not sure if urban myth, if they actually exist or is something that Sendek himself created in a moment of genius.)
Anyhoo – this class does change the program leading to our first bid (of 5 consecutive) in the big dance since 1991 (btw, it’s 2002 now.)
This team advanced to the acc championship game where it was blown out by Duke. In 2003, we advanced to the championship game again against Duke again. This time is different however, when Josh Powell – who has morphed into beast mode – converts on a 3 point play (he may have missed foul shot – State is up double digits with under 12 minutes to play….Coach K, Reddick, ACC refs go off. We lose in a much more painful loss than a year ago.
The next year, Sendek’s regular season apex. Hodge is ACC poty. We go 11-5. We beat a nationally ranked wake team in Winston. Scooter badly sprains an ankle before the tourney. We go to ACC semis, play an incredible first half…Up by 25 or 24 with a minute or so to play, Sendek puts in little used reserve…UMd hits a 3 at buzzer.
Next half witnesses the first of 2 epic collapses which will poison what should have been the most satisfying overall season since 1989. Led by the ACC officials (Larry Rose teeing up our bench for cleaning up sweat) and spurned recruit John Gilchrist, Umd stages miraculous comeback.
The pain of this loss is only trumped by what is to come…A collapse in the round of 32 vs Vanderbilt where we see a double digit lead evaporate (once again with a huge assist by officials) in last 3 minutes of the game.
The next year we go 7-9 and get a bid as a 10 or 11 bid in tourney and advance to the sweet 16 where we blow an 8 point second half lead vs Wisconsin
Next year we start out strong and at one point are either 10-3 or 9-3 but collapse down the stretch…We lose in round of 32. Herb flees to the desert.

As painful as the last 2 decades or so has been, we have been to the tourney 9 times, and have 3 sweet 16 appearances and 4 ACC championship game appearances.
choppack1ParticipantThe similarities end with the fact that both consisted of HS football players. Many of TOB recruits, like Amado’s never made it on campus. Doeren’s all seem to make it. How many of TOB’s class of 2012 graduated? About 5 or 6. Tough to have seniors and senior leaders on your team if they aren’t in school.
Grey – you must have missed the part where I say that he has done a better job retaining them than his predecessor. And that you can build a solid program through player development as long as the vitals are there.
However, I think we can all agree that the biggest reason DD has yet to have a single season that matched the conference median record of both of his predecessors has little to do with talent.
The big test for next year is turning the corner. The DD era tbus far for me has a sendekian feel to it. Incredibly slow progress, but progress nonetheless.
Hopefully year 5 for DD will be like year 6 for Sendek. It was that year where the players learned to win and close out games – and they took the big jump. Some would say the just learned to win like all players do, others would say they overcame their coaches tendency to make those games tighter than they should be – regardless, from that point forward the program was different. The collapses were still around and still happened, but we were no longer a laughing stock.
We get a good shot early. I am actually excited next year. Personally, I think he does it and I am more or less impressed with how he’s methodically building the program. But, it’s time to show the results on gameday.
choppack1ParticipantAnd this is where Yow’s diarrhea of the mouth gets her in trouble.
There’s a lot of similarities between the rankings of DD’s last few classes and TOB’s.
Again, I think attrition and character class hurt every bit as much as poor rankings for a school like us. If you can take and develop these guys into players I honestly don’t think they have to be 4 stars. That’s essentially what Wisconsin has done the last 10 years or so and others have done that as well (perhaps minus the character quotient.)
It bears repeating that without Blue Chip prospects were able to compete with 2 exceptions – Louisville and Miami. So, I am not too worried at this point.
If we don’t have a solid recruiting class next year and a good record , l think we can all agree it’s time to move on.

DSJ and Mav played their butts off…

One of the stranger things to me was smith was on Gillen.
It. Really. Sucks. Being. An. N.C. State.Fan.
That’s all.
I don’t know what we have done but the man upstairs is trying to push us away from sports.
02/01/2017 at 8:56 PM in reply to: Your “I’m Too Apathetic to Think Up a Cute Title” Syracuse Open Thread #116087choppack1ParticipantSeriously, no matter who our coach is we need to call these scumbags out.
02/01/2017 at 8:52 PM in reply to: Your “I’m Too Apathetic to Think Up a Cute Title” Syracuse Open Thread #116080choppack1ParticipantI don’t know why I watch. These refs are scumbags of the highest order.
02/01/2017 at 8:16 PM in reply to: Your “I’m Too Apathetic to Think Up a Cute Title” Syracuse Open Thread #116051choppack1ParticipantDSJ is putting on a passing performance for the ages.
choppack1ParticipantWe just picked up a solid juco dl
Cow – from everything I had heard Hodge was a true difference maker…I would have had similar thoughts to amerson…Which was “very glad he’s in the fold.”
We shall see what happens in the hollers of WVa.
02/01/2017 at 5:33 PM in reply to: Your “I’m Too Apathetic to Think Up a Cute Title” Syracuse Open Thread #115978choppack1ParticipantI am going to try what worked for Duke.
Oh, who am I kidding, I missed the first half of the Louisville game.
choppack1ParticipantLet’s face it. It’s foolish to say “Gott can’t coach.”
He has proven a competent coach – even at the highest level of college basketball. However, the true differentiator for the “Good Coach” vs. “Great Coach” – is the ability to build and to sustain after building. To win and win big over several years.
And whether it’s a lack of focus, lack of attention to detail, personnel issues ; it’s not really relevant. The man has coached for almost 2 decades and he hasn’t demonstrated an ability to sustain it.
It was fine to offer him the job when it was offered. It was a mistake – if avoidable / if costly – to offer the buyout.
choppack1ParticipantYea cow. I am sorry – but I would think that most coaches aren’t too concerned about the ad if they are going to be successful. I mean, you do what Bennett has done at UVa and the ad is in hot water of Bennet doesn’t like him – not vice versa.
It’s only less successful coaches who have to worry about buttering up an ad.
choppack1ParticipantInteresting that there seems to be such an opinion on the ad. If the basketball coach is good and he doesn’t get along with the ad, that’s the AD’s problem. Now, if they look at an AD like having a shack attracting vermin that will eventually head their way, that’s another and such an issue needs to be escalated to those in the leadership position above the ad.
Unfortunately for Yow, none of her 2 most important hires have knocked it out of the park. The rest of the sports are like good sides and clean silverware at a restaurant…They matter not if the main course doesn’t impress you. And that’s her reality, hey, the salads are super and so are the sweet potato fries…But neither of the steaks I have had here are really good.
choppack1ParticipantBill – it’s not fair to criticize Gott. He only had 6 days to prepare.for.this game.
choppack1ParticipantTo be fair cow I am not sure any of Gott’ teams knew / know how to play any defense.
choppack1ParticipantI haven’t seen this much talent wasted since Lowe’s 2nd, then final and then Gott’s 2nd year. Same as it ever was.
