I am cautiously optimistic about the search right now.

While on 1 hand, the use of a search firm is not encouraging (read we have reached out to parties of our short list and received the heismann and we now need to use someone with a longer list of names on their cocktail napkin) – we can only hope that it means we’re getting all these inquiries from various agents and need to keep it hush hush.

The timing is such that one would think a little bit of pre-existing work has taken place and perhaps, didn’t yield fruit.

Still, you have to believe we are going to get one of these right and there are a lot of exciting candidates out there.

Rye – how much of that is due to his conference though? He has elite takent for his conference. How will he handle being on the other side of that equation.

Regarding Cronin – you do see a steady improvement. How much of that is the result of the quality of the competition diminishing is another story and indicates the “risk” in him as a candidate.

Of course, a bigger question is whether or not he would take the job. I believe Cincy is his alma mater.

His teams play some ugly basketball, but ncsu needs to be a tough team.

I have heard whispers that Marshall may be interested.

Like Whiteshoes, I think there are reasons that he might be interested in this job. NC State can offer him things many other P5 schools cannot.

Now, he could just be playing Koch brothers or Indiana or whomever for a raise…

Regarding Miller – his motivations for coming here are very different.

Like BJD – I agree that there are no obvious, obtainable and desireable P5 candidates.

And let’s be honest…The last thing most of us care about in a coach is their political leanings. Like I said, it would have to be something way off the reservation to make me want to dump a great coach….And if you stink, I don’t care if on a hundred issues you and I are in total agreement.

Their job is to 1 legally build a good basketball program 2 bring in kids and staff who don’t embarrass the university. 3 Conduct themselves in a way that doesn’t embarrass the university (this is more about personal behavior.)

Heck, Boeheim and Roy have missed a tourney or two – just show me you can put really good teams on the floor – more than one season.

I do think if you haven’t won a conference title in 10 years – it is not unreasonable to think you won’t ever win one. (And here, history proved that just maybe we weren’t crazy to think we could do better than Sendek, who in 10 years @ Arizona state didn’t win a title there either before he was fired. Yet, the sun devils are never criticized for their lack of patience with him

I think the article is fair.

Like mentioned earlier – too much emphasis is placed on simply making the tournament. Making the tournament should happen roughly 75-80% of the time.

I think a fair expectation of an established program in the Acc of our “overall package” would be something like
Conference record 6-12 to 8-10 one year (and no dancing)
9-9 to 10-8 and bubble bid
11-7 to 12-6, bid, no bubble.
+12 conference win, top 4 ACC finish, top 5 NCAA seed.

Gott’s problem was that he never really got to that fourth level.

In year 6, when it should have been obvious he was building something, he was having his worse season ever. Worse yet, there was no hope for the future.

Sendek came much closer to building something than Gott. The administration should him patience by allowing him a 6th year. The risk paid off in that Sendek made 5 consecutive tourneys and had a couple of solid seasons. However, his teams collapses made it very hard for fans to be optimistic about the future with him at the helm.

Personality and leadership are critical. I have always thought that under a different AD and Chancellor, things could have turned out differently. The marketplace has demonstrated that his coaching alone isn’t going to build much without tremendous advantages.

So, NC State just needs to find a coach who will demonstrate he is building something AND give fans some very special moments.

We haven’t had that since V….So, Yea, we get more and more frustrated.

I tell you if I coach this team I scream at them to run and when they don’t they are sitting on the bench.

There is no need for us to play in a half court set when it can be avoided.

I was hoping Henderson was playing with so much fire because of the benching.

Unfortunately, he appears to be part of the mark Gottfried template…When they hit shots they are engaged.

It’s just the shame a great coach couldn’t get great talent to come to Raleigh.

If we boo the hiring of Steve Kerr or Greg Popovic we reserve to go 0-18 in conference.

A certain amount of success allows you to be anything but an outright Klansman/Islamic terrorist…And I would hope our alumns and true fans with ability to write would understand that.

Actually wulf – what I would tell you is that is shows that when your top choice turns you down, you may have to go down the list a little further.

You also better have a good pitch about not only why are you asking for them to take the job but also why they it’s in their best interest to do so.

Yea. I am not going to read anything good or bad into tweet.

And I am pulling for the flyers.

If Arch comes here – great, he is my a1 candidate. If not there’s others. What has made these job searches disasterous is the hires after the big fish turned us down:
Sean Miller and Marshall were available in the Lowe search.
Archie was available as was Lon Krueger (I think Dana Altman may have been available as well.)

Have a plan – execute said plan, unless it’s something you drew up on a bev napkin at the Angus barn.

If we don’t get Archie, I think we can conclude his time here in Raleigh wasn’t exactly enjoyable. I never got the impression that he was someone who was gaga over his time here in Raleigh. An example of someone who appears to look back at his time fondly is Julius Hodge.

Thad Marta being under fire pretty much highlights the hypocrisy of the media. Apparently, it is totally acceptable for tOSU fans and Indiana fans to be demanding change with their past.

Unlike Gott, these 2 guys didn’t resign under pressure from their last big gig.

If Archie is wise – he should realize that what OSU is expecting is a lot more ridiculous than what we are. I am not sure what he brings to the table that Matta doesn’t. And this is a warning both here and there – the style and pace of both is similar I believe.

I don’t care if Gott wins the national championship this year.

He doesn’t deserve another year. People want to view these things in a fishbowl…
    1. “he has been to the tournament 4 times in 5 years.” – Yes, he has in first 5 years at NC State. But, he has never been higher than an 8 seed, and 2 of those 4 times he was likely one of the last 5 teams in.
    2. “He’s been to 2 Sweet 16s in those 5 years.” – Yes, he has. But there’s more to basketball season than the NCAA tournament. His record in the other 2 main “seasons” is far from outstanding. In his first 4 years it was solid. However, the last 2 years, it has been very bad.

It sounds like NC State should release its own talking points to counter the talking points of the media:
    1. We don’t believe ESPN and the sports media have our best interests at heart, so the public should keep that in mind when they do what they do…
    2. This year’s team is one of the worst defensive teams in ACc history. As a matter of fact, in the last 10 years, there has been 1 team worse defensively.
    3. Speaking of defense – Gottfried’s defenses are the main “on court” reason he is being fired.
    4. It’s year 6 – if he was building anything it would be obvious. What should be obvious is that he’s not. If the roster is young and inexperienced – this is Gottfried’s fault.
    5. If Gottfried is such a great coach I look forward to facing him in the future when we play other P5 schools.

See – this is what I like about this site…You have rock-ribbed conservatives like roo arguing for DY and you have leftists like BjD arguing to the contrary – and for good measure you even have the trolling McCallum giving legit facts as well. (See there’s hope for merica yet )

Personally, in spite of the last search, I think Yow will play this hand better. I think she is hard working AND smart….And thus, I believe she learned her lesson first time around.

Tex – he is poorly coached on defense.

He was better defensively his freshman year…As was cat.

Funny how Kyle Washington is adequate defensively now.

Regarding our $$$ – I would think Yow already knows if Arch will come or not. If he will, I will be shocked if money is an issue… I also am confident Yow won’t go the clumsy Fowler route.

This needs to be a home run bite in some form or fashion. We are getting crucified right now but nothing would be fined that to call out Bilas and Parrish on the podium.

Guess what – coaching at NC State is a tough job,
You are in the shadow of 2 of the most successful basketball programs and coaches of all time.
You are NOT the de facto flagship school of the state or even your metro area.
You don’t enjoy the favorable media coverage and popularity that comes with #2.
The local media can be downright hostile towards you.
The program has had great success, so expectations, pressure and the attention of the fan base are definitely above average for a P5 school.
You play in a tough conference.
You play in the arena equivalent of the family minivan (before Sirius radio, screens) – it holds a lot of people, but has zero personality and the vehicle itself hinders excitement.
The fans expect you to win without cheating.
4 of the last 5 coaches were fired or resigned under pressure.

    However, on the other hand:
The last 3 coaches were capable of bringing in Top 25 ranked talent on a regular basis.
2 of the last 3 coaches have been to Sweet 16s and have made multiple NCAA appearances.
The university’s leadership and big money donors hasn’t had a coach with less than a 5 year tenure since the late 60s.
None of the last 4 coaches have proven themselves great P5 coaches, yet you still have items 1-3.
The program’s history, fan passion and attendance are above the P5 average.
The Pay will likely be above average for the P5.
NC State doesn’t have a modern day equivalent of Coach K or Roy – be successful, and you won’t be in anyone’s shadow. There is no reason, NC State can’t be the equivalent of a Duke or Michigan State or Florida in terms of success if you are the right coach.

Guess what – most rewarding jobs are tough. The job at State is no different. It does have its own unique set of challenges, but what job doesn’t.

I still think that part of the perception problem lies with the last 5 years of Sendek. This was when that “The NC State job is a really tough one” narrative really became front and center. The causes are debatable – I think LAF played a huge roll in this – but perception is reality, and for now, that is the de facto reality.

Many in the media think that you can’t win big at NC State, in spite of the fact that NC State did win big over several decades. They see this past history resulting in intense fan expectations, that make the job a “thankless job.” Too much pressure and expectations when they only won by luck and/or cheating more than 20 years ago.

Guess what – these same group of people said the same exact thing about Clemson football. And that’s the retort to the pundits making this claim.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess what caused Yow’s meltdown in the coaching search was the outright hostility from the press specifically reserved for Wolfpack basketball. It’s something she probably didn’t encounter at UMD and something she didn’t and hasn’t encountered in her other searches which of course have been much smoother and effective.

I imagine this time she is prepared…And what could be sweeter than getting an A lister and/or solid second tier candidate and having excellent results.

I think she has been preparing for this for a while and hopefully is mentally prepared for the search.

Speaking of classy… Tonight Gott did the show. He said he loved NC State…If Deb Yow was difficult to work for, you couldn’t tell.

Gott deserves some thanks for making us relevant again…And showing that you can recruit, win and beat the blues at our place or theirs.

It hasn’t been a perfect ride, but he deserved this shot. And like bjd said, if he leaves us a good slate – thanks and you are welcome at the bar any time.
