One of the traits of competence is that you learn from mistakes.

Her first basketball search was a disaster in every way possible.

But her football search was much quieter and as others have mentioned, the non-revenue sports haven’t been better in a long time. She does rub a lot of people the wrong way – assertive, confident, demanding and decisive people tend to do that – especially when they are female.

This has emerged as the classic Deb Yow revenue hire:
    – hot commodity with limited experience
    – confident, almost to the point of arrogance

She places a great deal of “faith” in personality. Ironically, she has a similar viewpoint to many of our fans who are enamoured with “swagger” and the “it” factor. If I were to wax poetic with her on the effectiveness on coaching I would probably surmise that both Dean and Coach K would have likely failed that test. (As would Bill Belicheck.)

As for this hire, like DD there are red flags. And one of these potential red flags (like it should have with Gott) – shouldn’t be allowed to reoccur again. The best news for the reddest flag is that a) he wasn’t in charge when it happened b) he hasn’t been implicated and c) it has little to do with coaching.

His on court red flag is the defense. We will find out if Wilmington’s below average defense (and that is putting it nicely)
is something that was a part of the growth process or if it’s a limitation directly resulting from teaching / philosophy and execution as it was unquestionably with Gott.

I mean this is absurd….On a criminal level. Some type of investigation should take place. Seriously. Was this incompetence or intentional.

I am sorry. That’s totally absurd that a 2 seed plays in South Carolina vs. South Carolina (the 7 seed)…And to make matters worse, the heels played their earlier. It’s disgusting – and on an IOC / World Cup Soccer corruption level.

Haven’t seen unfair play but boy was vcu ugly.

That a disgusting display. They do play hard but they don’t play smart and their offense is pedestrian. Truthfully, I was more impressed with nccu.

Vcu still plays an incredibly ugly brand of basketball.

Quite frankly?, it makes me question the quality of basketball that they get more than 10 wins a season.

Bjd – are you saying you don’t like Keatts or Wade?

Or are you saying they aren’t options post-Archie?

Mike – time will tell. Sooner or later he has to do it on a stage bigger than Central. How will he do with prima donnas?

He needs one more step up IMHO to see if he is ready for a big time P5 gig.

It makes no sense to me either

I don’t think Bennett can do much more at Illinois than he has done @ Uva. But who knows.

Don’t underestimate herb’s recruiting. He recruited well at Arizona state too. I think his personality was much better in a “closed” setting.

So I am watching this game and I didn’t know it – but evidently Bruce Weber was also in Mad men.

Regarding Archie, that’s a fair concern – as is the pace. I actually see a lot of Sendek ball in him and Sean. And I am talking first 5 year sendek ball, not the considerably more successful Princeton offense last 5.

Dance card got 100% of the at large teams…Lunardi didn’t.

    I don’t know about palm.

Based on that rational, then the Ohio State job is just as tough/bad as State!

Quite the contrary – they are the flagship school. I will put it this way – I have met hundreds of people from Ohio – ALL of them love Ohio State and I don’t think a one of them went there. Heck, some of those other in state schools are huge – and like most other UNC dash schools – they are buckeyes first.

State is a “tough” job. Sean knows the difference now between being THE “State” (flagship) school and being a “_ State/Tech” school.

The “flagship” usually has the journalism school, law school and med school. The _ State/Tech school often doesn’t.

This doesn’t mean that success can’t be had at the State/Tech schools – it just means that fight an uphill battle. Sean is well-traveled and he knows these things. At Arizona, he knows what it’s like to have the advantages. He knows it was/is much easier to build there than it at NC State.

Yep cow and bjd – got salesman AND inspiration in him. Heck, he a guy I would want my son play for. (Sorry, Deb our last coach didn’t meet that criteria.)

As for coach most likely….You can’t bet against Pitino or K of Wright. I think S. Miller has his boys on a roll. I am hoping that Kentucky works over them tarheels.

And I absolutely love it that Boeheim aint going to the big dance. If only they didn’t lose in the 1st round in Greensboro.

#1 – looks like dance card nailed it.
#2 – these guys are full of it. They need to move away from a conference schedule to “total body of work” like they claim to do. Seth Davis absolutely nailed it – no way UNC should be higher than Duke,..But thanks to the process they couldn’t pass Arizona.

Seems to me if your #3 2 seed (or was it #4 2 seed) is better than your #3 or #4 1 seed, you have decided facto evidence your process sucks.

    Yesterday’s games were interesting.

2 games of small ball vs. tall ball. In both cases, the small ball teams won. They spread out the bigs and dribble drivEd and killed their opponent from the 3 point line?.

Brey I proving himself quite the tournament coach lately.

Wulfpack – when was the last proven winner at a high level that we got – in any sport. TOB was a proven winner with an established ceiling. Jimmy V wasn’t, Coach K wasn’t, nor was Dean Smith or Everett Case.

What does worry me is that he hasn’t had to slay any giant, nor has he had a chance to build something yet.

I see him a lot like DD. A guy who has done well in a very limited period of time…But he ain’t young. He knows the region and he is an established recruiter.

If this is our guy, we better have done our homework on the red flags.

Hmmm – mysterious disappearance from college coaching for several years, around for an embarrassing recruiting scandal, and defense that rivals Gott’s?

Makes sense. Of all of the candidates this is the highest risk but ole Deb loves that swagger (almost as much as Gott.)

Don’t get me wrong- there’s a lot that’s right about Keatts…but there’s a lot that is wrong about him and if we are in this position in 5 years, well, to me that’s the expected result given the raging red flags I just threw out.
