choppack1Participant
I think our young receiving group performed pretty well last year.
Regarding the kicking game, it had established itself as a weakness early on in the season. (Read before DD put the Clemson game in its hands) – so I can only excuse so much in that endeavor.
I think a lot of us are in the same boat here:
Impressed by the program building – especially on the lines which is where so many games are won and lost. Impressed by the character he appears to demand. But somewhat concerned about the game day decisions and the less “just follow the process” oriented things that seem to have kept us from reaching TOB’s conference win total the year he was fired.
I think the comparisons to Sendek apply here. We have a ham and egger. This is much better than Gottfried – hopelessly distracted – or a Les – too challenged for the big stage – or whatever…I think this just may work out as Beamer didn’t kill it early at VaTech and Mack didn’t kill it early in Chapel Hill and Grobe didn’t kill it early at Wake Forest.
And let’s face it, football is a game that is usually won in the off-season…which is where the process stuff is key.
choppack1ParticipantI think Finley’s play last year is also a good sign.
If red zone td conversion (which imho hurt us every bit or more so than our field goal kicking) can improve I think sky’s the limit (assuming we have any scholarship bodies left in defensive backfield.)
choppack1ParticipantRye – I don’t care about X’s and O’s. I care about scoring, red zone efficiency, and the ability to get that key first down (read third down efficiency.) But, no matter how good you are at the most visible part of your job – there are things you can’t do. It sounds like Canada crossed one of those lines.
Like the op – not sure why the SI guy had to editorialize unless he has asked both Canada, DD and DY on their take as to why he was let go, but hey, it’s the media and there’s a reason why most Americans don’t respect that job anymore.
Drink really needs to improve on our red zone efficiency this year if we are going to have a better year.
choppack1ParticipantTrue cow dog – but just because people present employment challenges doesn’t mean they aren’t good at their job.
Translation: if Canada wasn’t good, he would probably be out of football. But there’s evidence he is good.
Like I said, these next 2-3 years will be interesting. I had heard another one of our ex-oc’s was similarly eccentric/difficult to work with. He ended up as a HC in the NFL
choppack1ParticipantFreeman will help. Hopefully, we will have all hands on deck.
The “scuttle” seem to indicate Yurt7 is a goner and MJ is on the fence.
Probably need to get at least one more for an NIT run next year. (Note: This is all out of KK’s control. Give him time. He deserves it.)
choppack1ParticipantYes. There were statements made that it wasn’t related to on field performance.
As an OC, it matters not what we think. Most college coaches and the stat sheet have a favorable impression of him.
His next gig is head coach if he doesn’t go off the reservation at LSU. And if he does well at that mid-major gig..
choppack1ParticipantIt always is and should be a business or treated as such.
I actually think most student athletes get a good deal. Where the exploitation exists is when you see kids whose”earning” potential is limited to a scholarship and the free market would yield 5 fold results. Most don’t fall in this category but about half of he big-time football and scholarship recipients fall into this category.
Else, that free education is very much a fair exchange (if not tilted towards the athlete in terms of the cost/ benefit model.
choppack1ParticipantPaki – I can guarantee you the marriage bill won’t make it out of committee. There’s probably a slight chance that the ACC boycott bill might, but that is unlikely as well.
You ever wonder why these stories are reported with such enthusiasm?
choppack1ParticipantBummer news losing these 3 guys.
Regarding Pharaoh and Moss, the loss of one of these guys could have easily been absorbed…both of these guys are playmakers…and when you have a team that has come up just a bit short in several games, well – you can see why they left.
Regarding Mav – who knows. You have to give the new coach time to get his guys in there and you can’t blame a kid for leaving. Was he tired of school? Did he dislike the new coach? I dunno. It now matters not.
Let’s give Keatts a season before saying the hire won’t work. He knocked the cover off the ball at unc-w. That’s a good thing. Unlike DD, he didn’t take over a program on an upward trajectory.
choppack1ParticipantPaki – so these bills have been put to a vote and passed in the house?
choppack1ParticipantHamlet- good call out. Certainly, overall, our athletic department has taken a gargantuan step forward under her leadership…if Keatts and Doeren can be successful then she will rightfully have a large building or two in her name and will place her face on state’s athletic mt. Rushmore.
04/03/2017 at 7:03 PM in reply to: Dad asked me to watch the National Championship with him. Why I said ‘No.’ #122262choppack1ParticipantAmen Bill. I was thinking the same thing. I have read many posts from men who have lost their Dad’s. My Dad was pulling for the heels hard Saturday – and I ain’t going to lie it bothered me.
But sometimes whatever shall we call it works in mysterious ways. There’s? was a large group behind us with the typical obnoxious loud mouthed Tar Heel fan….I fumed. I saw someone battling obvious disabilities – not sure if it was cerebral palsy or what limp by with a great deal of effort?. Occasionally when that obnoxious heel fan would start chirping I would look behind me for the voice. While the challenged individual wasn’t him, he was with that group.
I talked to the Heels fan after the game. They were in Charleston for a batchelor’s party. I realized, if this group of guys was going to include an individual with physical challenges – a) they couldn’t be that awful and b) there were more important things than this stupid game.
04/03/2017 at 5:31 PM in reply to: Dad asked me to watch the National Championship with him. Why I said ‘No.’ #122256choppack1ParticipantI made a decision last year at the football game that I should never attend a UNC-State athletic event.
I wonder how UNC fans would feel if the scandal was @ Duke and this was Duke in the championship game? We know – they would be angry as heck.
It matters not, this is the lot we have chosen. I will try to avoid the game tonight but probably won’t be able to do so. I don’t want to watch – because like the author – there are people I love who want them to win badly – and pulling against them is schadenfreude which ain’t good.
Throughout this whole scandal – I have wondered how I would have reacted had this been NC State. Would I have wanted them to kick the can down the road when we had a great chance at athletic glory this year? Would I have wanted a just punishment for our violations? Would I have wanted us to stick it to the NCAA? (I think almost all of us know the answer to that question in our hearts.)
I am also taken back to a wise family friend several years ago when I asked if he would watch the final game in the Braves- Blue Jay’s World Series. He said the pain of watching them lose would be greater than the joy of watching them win. And while the roles on this are reversed – his words proved to be true.
And I also look at this as I look at other recreational things. If every other time I drank beer I got angry, I wouldn’t drink beer. If every other time I ate a certain food, it made me feel lousy for a few hours, I wouldn’t eat that food. Meaning – why do I subject myself to it?
choppack1ParticipantThose solid Wake teams of the 90s and 2000 had a ton of NC talent. There was a lot of good NC talent on V’s teams post-83… Washburn, Shack, Chucky, Howard, Hinnant…For Herb’s tourney teams you had Cliff Crawford, Marcus Melvin, Scooter Sherrill, Cam Bennerman, Ilian Evtimov’s, Cedric Simmons. Gott’s tourney teams has CJ Leslie, CJ Williams, TJ Warren, Tyler Lewis
choppack1ParticipantThere are actually 2 assistants officially in the cold now. Johnson and the latest is his right hand man from uncw.
I am fine with both hires.
Rye – like you, I think there was a lot to be gained by being methodical in the search. It’s important to remember – that last time a coach was hired in a methodical, logical manner – it resulted in a 10 year tenure. Granted, the cocktail napkin searches that followed – were perfect examples of what happens when you don’t really have a plan after your first option or two say no thanks.
To me, I think Archie would have listened, but ultimately turned us down. Maybe he’s a midwesterner at heart, maybe he thinks we’re nothing but a bunch of red-faced unreasonable fans.
It’s not important anymore as it pertains to him. What I do hope our community learns is to try to keep our disagreements more private. Specifically, I would like the moderators? to actually moderate our largest site. They don’t need to run down our current players to prop up subpar coaches and they shouldn’t tolerate attacks on players or the families of coaches. That particular site is the wild West and l don’t think that’s accidental.
choppack1ParticipantBjd – good to see you back and posting.
I think the Don Henley song “Boys of Summer” applied in this case. Us fans were apparently pining for someone that we had a strong connection at one time. What happened happened – and the school went one way, Arch went another. Drove by the house, and there’s someone who obviously moved on. At least, that’s what the tea leaves said…Will this go in history like Fowler’s infamous pizza slice with calapari? The Rick Barnes lowball offer?
Who knows. Perhaps another way to look at it is the potential impact of negativity long term. When Arch was here it did get ugly. And while coaches are 100% fair game, the general rule should be to avoid going after the student athletes. I think our largest site does a lousy job of policing that stuff, but regardless, it certainly doesn’t help. Personally, I think Fowler was due the lion’s share of the blame, but again, those kids on the ground floor likely saw it differently. If they respected and admired Sendek – they probably don’t remember the times too fondly. If they had the opposite of a more nuanced view – perhaps they totally understand the fans frustrations.
Continuing with the “one who got away” analogy. I think most state folks thought we left it with Archie on good/decent terms. Now, some are blaming his family for poisoning the well. But, it’s now not happening – ever – barring something unforseen.
Me, I believe this happened for a reason. For the first time in a long time we chose a successful coach who wants to be here and believes we will be great again. Hopefully, we will look at the cold shoulder from Archie’s camp as the best thing that happened to us since Morgan Wooten turned us down.
choppack1ParticipantA thought about Sendek as it compares to Keatts.
All Keatts has to do is be a little better. Sendek played in the ACC championship 3 of his 10 years (not a bad %)…He advanced to the ACC semis 6 of 10 I believe.
Sendek came durn close to where we want to be – and many of Sendek’s problems were about ability to inspire confidence (an area V excelled in). If Keatts can be just a bit better – we’ll have a solid coach for 15 years.
choppack1ParticipantI hate that we are losing Allen. He had good perimeter skills and we could definitely use that with Keatts system.
Rumor has it that Kansas is making a push.
choppack1ParticipantThanks for info Manu – good stuff.
Really enjoy watching swimming – it’s a great sport to watch and participate in – perhaps the worst ever to practice though.
choppack1ParticipantPakfanistan – I think that’s a fair question….There are zero “sure thing” P5 coaches that are obtainable out there.
The closest sure things were Marshall and Arch and who knows their level of interest.
choppack1ParticipantIs this on tv anywhere?
choppack1ParticipantAnd he liked a good night on the town.
If you are going to hit the town, you better win. Boy, Gott and Staak hanging together would have been epic.
choppack1ParticipantGrey – I hope you are correct. She is looking for superstars (which makes the Gottfried hire look like even more of a panic move in hindsight.)
choppack1ParticipantWithout having access to any inside scoop, I am going to operate under the assumption that Yow, Woodson and Murphy are rational actors.
As such, I believe that the alum with a stronger resume was queried as to his level of interest and it did not pass the test. I also believe my 1a was queried and again, positive enough vibes were not given.
And after watching VCU – Keatts moved way ahead of Wade.
choppack1ParticipantYes, but I have my doubts about Coach Sheridan. Me, I’d prefer her to be more data focused, but I do think she has excellent instincts. Heck, she identified Franklin before others who hire head coaches did.
She can place her head on the Nc state mt. Rushmore if DD and KK turn out well.
