choppack1Participant
Gso – Wiseman is one of my favorites. I actually ended up watching the 4th quarter at Sammy’s – had to split up the ride back from Wilmington.
choppack1ParticipantNo question about it we caught a break there.
That’s beside the point though. And yes, 2 months from now this victory will be in hindsight..we will have all the data to know whether this was a turning point for the program or Notre Dame 2.
What it means regardless at this time is that we beat a team we could have very easily and according to the odds makers should have lost to…and really what has held back the perception of this program in terms of the fan base is the difficulty we have had in specifically these types of games. Remember, in his first 4 years he had only beaten 4 other teams (vs 8 other teams.)
No matter how you look at it, it’s progress.
choppack1ParticipantFrom a participation level this started in my generation with the advent of integration….and poof soccer became very popular (again, from a participation standpoint.)
However, it will be interesting to see if middle / upper class white suburbanite families continue to participate so heavily in the sport if it becomes more diverse and the athletes become faster, bigger and stronger. Girls youth soccer has already had to change rules to minimize headers.
It’s also interesting that no one seems to care about hockey players – who have demonstrated similar risks to NFL in terms of concussions and violent / self destructive behavior that mirrors their NFL counter parts. I am not sure if the football Nazis think football families are too dumb to make their own decisions or they don’t care about hockey players.
I guess we are living in interesting times.
I will also say this: most “extreme/individual” sports are every bit as dangerous as football…skiing, skateboarding, biking all carry life threatening risks. 2 years ago, I was terrified and feared the worst when my son hit a concrete wall going about 20 miles an hour down a steep driveway. It was miraculous that he wasn’t seriously hurt.

Finley, JaySam, finally got running game going.
Bad: defense plew a lot of assignments, missed only fg attempt badly.. Furman’s kicker was $$.
choppack1ParticipantI haven’t thrown in the towel either. History has shown that some coaches who stink at prep are great in the game and vice versa. I always thought Mack Brown was a horrid coach once the ball kicked off.
In general, coaches are like people…flawed individuals who have strengths and weaknesses. Florida State looms large but alas we can’t overlook the paladins. (Though we should win this game by 45+.)
choppack1ParticipantThis is why after a few years you need a season and some great wins to point to…because injuries do happen, bad calls do happen and players fail to execute.
Good and bad breaks being what they are…they should all even out.
Here’s a question for us to ponder – what is DD’s record vs Power 5 teams in the 4th quarter when tied or trailing by 1 score or less.
I don’t know the answer but I am thinking he beat Syracuse in that situation but I cannot think of another example.
choppack1ParticipantFwiw it’s worth, Marshall beat Miami of Ohio, who BEAT Austin Peay.
Lots of thoughts here:
1. The DL has been like they were last year…outstanding against the run, challenged against the pass and qb’s who can pass.
2. The db lost a starter who will soon return. He was our only returning CBC starter. Predictions are made without injury information if they occur after the predictions.
3. The kicking game has predictably struggled. DD took the same approach to it this year that he did last year- signing a small school grad school kicker and go figure, results are the same, if NOT worse.
4. Running game misses dayes.
5. Game day coaching/motivation/confidence remains the samechoppack1ParticipantCowdog – I am looking forward to it. Also I hope that you are worried about wolfpack football vs Irma come later week.
choppack1ParticipantCow – agreed. The OL was missing 2 key pieces much of game (and one the entire game.)
As for the DL – SCAR got what 31 yards rushing? We see a similar problem to last year – vulnerable to good passing and an elusive qb..not sure we are alone there.
Still much football to be played – but hard to be incredibly excited until we close the deal (hence the Sendek comparison.)
Clearly some things are be done right – but closing is kind of important…and to date DD has proven a very mediocre closer (and that’s being kind) in this 50/50 games.
choppack1ParticipantFunny – people say defensive secondary still a problem yet the 2 starters we lost were drafted. Geez. You think, maybe, just maybe, it’s the scheme.
I mean, if there is anything state has been able to do in the past, it’s pull the occasional shocker…but alas, 5 years into diamonds ru n we haven’t done that.
We may end up pulling this out of the ditch, but I suspect we are headed for 3-5 and more coaches blaming in on the kids not making plays.
choppack1ParticipantAnd those gamecock fnas are absolutely the worst I have ever seen. Saw a wolfpacker get thrown down 3 rows… I was threatened myself. Definitely pulling for Clemson. ( There were lots of decent gamecock fans, but lots of absolutely awful ones too… probably like going to a hooligan soccer game.)
choppack1ParticipantNot sure how you blame this game on db’s. The way I see it….we lost 10 points on special teams, 7 points on a to in the red zone.
But please, blame it on the secondary. They weren’t bad – bit they put us in the position to win. Personally, I thought we should have tried to run the ball more.
OL did Ok…how bad can they be when your qb who is not a speed burner or have a cannon completes almost 40 passes (btw – I think we passed it 60 times.)
Team needs to find a way to stop winning games instead of losing them. DD may be the best builder we have had – bit this far he football’s version of Herb Sendek – just not as good as herbus Maximus.
choppack1ParticipantYep Rye. Personally, I don’t like to associate myself with folks who don’t seriously try when it comes to having standards.
choppack1ParticipantTat. Good news: these were freshmen.
Bad news: highly recruited freshmen
Good news: our coach had the integrity to kick them off the team.choppack1ParticipantSometimes you suspect the “who” based on the fact that it makes the news.
choppack1ParticipantReally looking forward to football. DD Inc have done a great job putting the program in a position to have the best season in a long time.
Secondary is a bit of a concern – as is field goal game. All in all, the most complete team we have had in my memory. A credit to his building….
But now we have to sign on the line that is dotted.
choppack1ParticipantIt’s a pretty big deal having Feinstein weigh in on this so forcefully. When it comes to college basketball and sports in general, he is as respected as anyone out there. He’s not a bomb thrower… And he is very connected. He has earned his gravitas not by appealing to the lowest common denominator or from being a former player, but rather producing some of the best sports books of our time. The guy is on ESPN and NPR.
Please notice how his opinion is much different from those who are actually employed in a full time capacity by an entity that I have come to view as representative of society in general, not just sports.
Quite honestly, given his extensive connections and his background – I expected the same “everybody has easy classes” response so typical in the industry. For a guy who has written about the best of college sports and was written about them in glowing fashion – this is a big deal.
choppack1ParticipantGc – two things should be separated…
1) the gray zone between no action and a clumsy pass / overzealous but brief touch
2) the brief touch being extremely forceful / umm in the “red zone” and on…No matter what anyone dresses like you can’t violate that 2nd zone or exert force. I think we can agree on that.
From my standpoint – I see the suggestive dressing much like I do the proverbial toilet seat argument. There should be some leeway involved and discretion as well. However, I would rather live in a world of absurdly short skirts than without them!
choppack1ParticipantBill ; as a 47 year old man who sometimes does his version of two-a-days (not that, but when I am lucky…) I think this is pure-t wussification cwap.
choppack1ParticipantWhy wouldn’t a state fan be happy for him. The only thing we can fault him for is not demanding Gott be fired as a condition to him playing here. But that’s not fair to him or Gott.
choppack1ParticipantGowolves – I think in the eyes of the law sexual assault can be somewhat of a vague term. Technically, a sexual assault could be no more than unwanted groping. While that isn’t good – it’s also much different than rape (which is also lumped in that broad category.)
Agreed that both parties deserve to be treated fairly. I saw an interview with a co-ed on campus and she was saying these people shouldn’t be allowed back in school. (Someone forgot to tell her about innocent until proven guilty.)
choppack1ParticipantThanks gowolves – some people apparently have not mastered deduction and basic internet searches.
And agree with you – that’s why I said, hopefully these accusations are not true regardless of whom is accused.
choppack1ParticipantOddly enough I am not a huge fan of Clapton’s solo work but obviously enjoy his collaboration with Harrison.
And agreed on Paul McCartney
choppack1Participant44rules – I don’t know if I would complain too loudly about the cards and their actions being that uhh…
