Was anybody else surprised to see Uncle Roy pull the 1-3-1 zone out after five years of nothing but MTM and beat Coach Rat bad the other night? (his kids said they had been practicing it for two weeks but nobody had seen it — Uncle Roy is a shifty dude)
You GOTT to play more Zone to win today’s game.
————–… If those that want to speed the game up and make it more “offensive” (in more ways than one)… the impact will be twofold on the defensive end….
… you gonna see more and more zone defenses… because of the foul difficulties when the refs average 45 whistles a game …
But none of them are going to be very good… cause it’s a foreign subject to the MACFIVEONEANDDONE Kids and the NBA doesn’t play it so why learn it… AND it takes THREE years to learn how to play it reasonably well…… which also translates to more recruiting headaches and more player transfers over playing time cause they ain’t learning faster and conflicts with coach ’cause coach wants me to do something I don’t want to do…
So let’s just shorten the shot clock by 5 or 10 seconds… and EVERYBODY over fifty years old can quit worrying about basketball ’cause NOBODY they know is watching it anymore….

Especially where the learning is “incremental”…Who reasonably expects the students to do logarithms, quadratics, integrals && differentials… when the class was all about adding, subtracting, multiplying && dividing ??

Yeah… this year’s Team… has shown a lot of defensive deficiencies and still does with two games left in the regular season…
Yeah… truth is this year’s Team “sucked” defensively… except for a few games.
Yeah… truth is … for the first half of the season… they weren’t much better on the other end of the floor.But to play the kind of Defense….
… that wins championships
… that Mr. Dog and Dr. Wuf and Paky are talking about above…
… the kind the ‘Hoos play…
… the kind Miami played last year…
… the kind FSU played the year before…It’s takes “good kids” a minimum of THREE YEARS to learn…
It don’t happen with your MacFiveStarOneAndDone Kids… look at Kentucky’s record this year… and you know their lineup…
It take YEARS….Most of the kids coming out of HS today are clueless… Our last three teams being Exhibits A, B & C…
But to say stuff like the Coaches don’t emphasize, don’t teach, don’t care about defense, unless you’ve been to a couple practices…. may well be just a little myopic…
On the other hand… if one watched closely and knew what they were looking for…
This group of kids… has shown us one thing… they have all busted their butts since August to get better and to win some games.Like I said at the top….
GOTT & Company are doing most everything right in terms of building the program…
And GOTT & Company will get better at what they do too…———–
The new day is coming… we know not the day but one day soon…The sun, moon and stars are all lined up somewhere in GOTT’s fourth or fifth year…
and that’s when Uncle Roy and Coach Rat hang up their sneakers…In the wailing and gnashing of teeth that ensues, there will be a very nice opportunity for those who are “in the right place at the right time” and hopefully they will be wearing red and white.
And I think Everybody here has GOTT to be there that day !

It’s not a loaded question… it’s a “trick” question….
.. kinda like “running a cutter thru the lane to see if the other team is playing zone or man-to-man…”
The ‘trick’ is this…
There’s an imaginary “line” out there somewhere and it’s one of those “lines” where discretion should cause one to pause when approaching. It’s also one of those “lines” where extreme caution should also be used when one chooses to cross.
Is it not true that nobody is hiring anybody who “appears” to look for ‘excuses’, uses ‘excuses’, or worst of all — manufacturers ‘excuses’ — to avoid accepting responsibility for their own actions and the actions of those working under them?
And is the same not also true when the “applicant” is so firmly entrenched in their stated opinions as to become blind to larger perspectives, and in that process becomes insensitive or rude to other people?

Now… along these lines…
with respect to officiating in basketball games…It’s probably okay to say… with or without profanity….
“The refs suck…” or…
“The ref made a very bad call at the end of the game…” or…
“If the ref had called that last play differently… we would have won the game”It’s probably NOT okay to say… “The refs cost us the game…”
Likewise…
It’s probably okay to say…
“We do not appear to be getting our fair share of questionable or judgement calls…”It’s probably NEVER okay to say… “The whole world is out to get us and is doing everything it can to make sure we don’t ever win again…”
Needless to say… when some people hear this last statement… that’s when the fireworks become most spectacular… or the conversation ends quickly and politely — the result being the same either way.

You know as well as I…. that when you ask someone what they thought about something or if they liked or disliked something… their responses tell us very little, if anything, we didn’t already know, about the “something”…
…those kinds of answers always tell us much more… about the person answering the question.
Therein, my friend, lies the danger of choosing to cross the line.
Some things, perhaps, are best left unsaid.

Lesson #1…. Geography matters….
Which is to say simply… the farther you are from the intersection of Hwy 15/501 and I-40… the easier the job of building a championship ACC basketball program will be.
Perception is reality in this case. There is the physical geography as in the actual number of miles from one point to another, and there is the “perceived” geography… the “distance from one place to another” in one’s head. That’s the feeling that you are close to home, when in fact, you are a thousand miles away.
We might all be better off… if we ignored 90% of what emanates from Durham and Orange County. The truth is that’s exactly what ‘everybody else’ has been doing for years.
The potential downside of that shift in thinking, however, might be severe winter boredom.

and if you’ve ever coached any team in any sport at any level… you know this to be true.We are NCState….
Case, Sloan, Valvano….
all won 20-30% of their games by out-coaching the other SOBs…
before, during and after the game.Even in the case of HWNSNBM… he won 40-50% of his games the same way.
But no F’ing way am I inferring those years were “better days”.It may also be the case, that the percentages here for the Big Three were even higher in big games, in rivalry games and in important games.
Today’s game was an “Important” game for us.
