BassPackerParticipant
Great post Mista Wolf. Why I enjoy talking to my friends who are coaches at another school or even sport, it gives a point of view that the fan does not see. I agree Gott is the best we Gott since V. But I do have my reservations on his in game and fundamentals with coaching. I admit I’m a fan, not coach, so maybe don’t know difference from a coachable trait to a learned trait with a player. I do think a lot of our team problems are coachable traits.
To give an example: Know a high school basketball coach whose team was averaging 30% from free throw line. He spend entire week making them shoot free throws and adjust techniques. In between a miss, he also made them run some suicide sprints. The next game the team shot 75% and have up season average currently to 65%. Things like poor FT shooting makes me blame Gott more than players. And same can be said for plays like the TO call last game. We all knew who was gonna get ball so Louisville doubled Cat which he ended up throwing ball to Martin who mishandled the ball without putting up a shot. Again that is on coaching. IMO
BassPackerParticipantWell….according to GoPack.com schedule and results, we beat FSU 85-78 Feb 1 in Tally for our first win. So I’m going with Feb 1st. I think better question is how bad will the Cheats beat us by on the Hill Sat. I say 3 touchdowns.
BassPackerParticipantI heard thru the grapevine we may have a Henderson sighting tonight in uniform. And if not tonight, he will suit up for UNC. This is encouraging.
BassPackerParticipantI like Gott but have to agree he can and is his worst own enemy. Some I get, some I don’t. No way he knew would see early departures and transfers. Well, maybe he knew the transfer was coming. Main thing I completely don’t get is his lack of using some of the bench warmers to rest others. I mean, is Kirk that incapable that he cant be on the floor 2 mins? If so why did Gott recruit him? How bout little Corch? Give the kid a chance for Chris’ sake. No way Cat can continue at this pace and be healthy and/or productive all season. The team free throw shooting can be a product of being tired. Gott to try something different because the other coaches gonna come at us the same game plan night after night.
BassPackerParticipantRoo, you are correct about TOB. We should have not included him in the conversation with BUnting, Davis and Weis. All were fired is why I mentioned TOB. And in most instances when a head coach is fired, he usally chooses to hit the beach or broadcast booth while he collects the remainder of his contract from their former employer. Which would have been the case for TOB had he not taken job at UVA. And my understanding that when that happens, usually only the difference in old salary at new job is paid to compensate contract.
I was referring to when a head coach gets fired, not moves on to another school as was in case of DD or Larry F. Then a buyout is neg to the coach and school. When its a firing, as you pointed out, unless the coach takes an immediate job, the university is obligated to pay his contract money as was the case with Davis and Weis. The assistant coaches like my friend are usually given no more than a dismissal paper.BassPackerParticipant4 star Greensboro WR Diondre Overton had us and Clemson on his final list. He was scheduled to announce Sunday nite, which was only hours after news broke OC Matt Canada had been fired. Overton picked Clemson over us. Not saying Canada firing had any decision (probably) on the kid picking Clemson but Overton choosing Clemson could be a reason Weston is re-opening his commitment with a visit to NC State.
BassPackerParticipantI guess I should be happy that VT has a better basketball program than us?
I don’t understand the giddiness to point this out.

Salt in these old red wounds and more scars
BassPackerParticipantI have a long time good friend who has been an assistant football coach for 25 yrs. I’ve seen the stress and pressure of the job both on and off the field on a personal level. We fished together this weekend as he finally had much needed time to get away as the season ended with a loss in their bowl game too. Its always interesting to get his take on goings on in college football, but I also take advice from Lynyrd Skynyrd when we are together: Don’t ask me about my business, And I won’t tell you goodbye/ If you want to talk fishin’ Well, I guess that’ll be okay.
He was at UNC during the Bunting years, then at Clemson with Bowden, joined Maryland with Edsall but got out of that ticking time bomb to join Narduzzi when he was hired at Pitt last year. Most assistants don’t get paid to be fired like the head coaches, they scramble to find another job. Charlie Weis being paid almost 25 million to NOT coach football was a topic we laughed at and shook our heads about. Also about TOB still cashing in from firing at State while slumming it in a million dollar ocean front home in Charleston. Point is most assistants don’t get the credit deserved when team has success but become the scape goat when a head coach fails. He told me a story that showed the short lived joy of the job. My friend is the running back/kick off team coach. His last season at Maryland, when they were down 6 with less than a minute to go, Coach Edsall told him to tell return man take a knee to save time. When it was kicked, the player ran it out for a touch down to win the game. Edsall was irate at him for the call, even thought they won, and to the point it was the start of the end of his time there.
Don’t get my point wrong, my friend loves his job. A job that even though only has security from season to season has allowed him to provide for his family well. And a job that never stops. He phone was never off, from calls from Narduzzi to calling a potential recruit between cast. A job that affects his family greatly with each move or firing. Moving, new house, new school, new friends, new town. Don’t get me wrong, they know its part of the business, only good as your next season or recruiting class, but it makes me see things different. I agree we need changes with football staff. I just don’t get as excited as some to see headlines when it happens.
BassPackerParticipantThe Clemson pillage of our top NC players continue. Diondre Overton commited to Clemson last nite. For those who don’t know who is, he is a 4 star WR from Greensboro who had NC State and Clemson his two top destinations. I find it odd or maybe telling that DD fired his OC Canada hours before Overton was gonna announce. Unless DD makes an homerun hire, like a Lincoln Riley at OC, one can imagine our top players will continue to go south of the border.
BassPackerParticipantWonder what happens with Diondre Overton tonight now. Could be bad news for us and good news (again) for Clemson.
BassPackerParticipantI agree, DD needs to do some internal changes with his staff if he plans on being long term here in Raleigh. Perhaps Raleigh was only planned to be a stepping stone back to Wisconsin but the way that train is rolling, its off the track and headed for a station at South Florida or Bowling Green.
Some have suggested throwing the bank at the likes of a Chip Kelly. Or maybe Lincoln Riley. I would love to see a big established name or young proven gun here if for nothing more to bring some excitement back to the program. My question is who drives the brink truck to the bank? UNC threw big bucks at Chizik for DC and he came. Where and who decided his salary to get him in Chapel Hill? So, who controled the money to get a Gene Chizik as DC? The AD? The head coach? The WPC? Does the salary come from the Athletic Dept bank or is DD given free rein to decide assistants salaries? Short of long….who gives the green light to back the brink truck to a big name DC or OC front door and then signs the IOU?
BassPackerParticipant<Man, North Dakota State got hammered. When does the Pack play?>
Thanks, I needed a laugh but it cost me a good beer.
BassPackerParticipantI listened to an interesting interview with former coach Butch Davis on recruiting. He said that 8 out of 10 recruits who sign with a school don’t know or care what their past records were. And that they don’t use that as reason to commit to a school. He said they are more influenced by coaches and interaction with their family. I remember Coach Logan saying he got a top instate recruit because he took the time to help put a roof on his family home. Guess point is you can throw more money into a program, build nice practice facilities and still not know if it matters to a recruit.
BassPackerParticipantI think the trend on this site reflects the trend of NC State athletics. Its hard to be positive about anything right now. And the frustration of it all comes out here. Maybe this site has become our “couch” and a place to vent. Coming off a lack luster football season right into an obvious downward spiral in basketball is like getting coal in your stocking.
Perhaps we all need a visit from the Ghost of Championships Yet to Come.
BassPackerParticipantWe have become a program of gimmicky uniforms, not a program of success. Seems ever other game its something new with this crap. Those shoes are a joke. If gonna do something like this….and that’s a big IF, why not use Tuffy which has a tradition with our school. We are the red and white. Forget all this dang bling, its embarrassing …..JUST WIN !!
BassPackerParticipantDanny Manning will have Wake back in less than 4 yrs. Maybe in 3. Wait….he needs get his players in first. Guess Pack plays down to its opponent. Only 20 pts against SoCo 4-7 powerhouse on our own floor.
BassPackerParticipantWas glad to see the Twin Towers play with no obvious effects from the ankle sprang. As more teams concentrate on Cat with double team, hopefully Coach Gott will run offense to make quick passes to get our true bigs like Abu more into the offense. Cat will have a bullseye now from all opposing teams game plan. It was interesting that Rowan would actually be a senior in high school had he not reclassified. Thats really young to be thrown into ACC starting role. Go Pack!
BassPackerParticipantSaw that on WRALTV5 last nite, really really unfortunate news. If he comes back in Feb, not sure he will be close to 100% until maybe ACC tournament time. Hate for the kid but at this point would be considering asking for a medical redshirt perhaps if available.
BassPackerParticipantECU is a powder keg right now. There is a big petition to bring Ruffin back by players and fans…and fire the AD. Cant see Canada setting sail in those rough seas. If they do hire Canada at ECU, look for a quick mutiny if don’t win early and often. Would make an interesting game come Sept 10th with Canada on the opposite sidelines in Greenville…..Arrrrr !
“If ye thinks he be ready to sail a beauty, ye better be willin’ to sink with her.”
BassPackerParticipantI agree, seems like one excuse after another after another bad performance. One could understand it (maybe) if we lost our star and key player at pg early on but it was the other them that had this happen. Michigan coach changed up after the injury and Gott never had an answer. Which is very telling when it should have been an opportunity any good coach takes advantage of on his home court. I like Gott but into year 5 beginning to question his ability to adjust to most in game situations. Just don’t see how the return of Henderson will make that much a difference this season. But I have hope.
BassPackerParticipantSome great comments here on the game yesterday and sideline coaching decisions. We sit in front of section where late hit on Williams was called. It could have went either way, a no call or as it was a flag. The two refs closest to play didn’t deem it severe enough to call while the one ref in chapel hill did (loved that remark). It was a momentum changer as it would have been a punting situation and our ball. Would it been a game changer? Maybe #71 on offense in blue did more obvious holding that were no calls to me was more game changing that the out of bounds pf. It created holes and slowed potential tacklers from getting to their backs.
I like DD but I sense a loyality to his staff similar to TOB, for better or worse. There are some great young coordinators out there. I watched Lincoln Riley at ECU light up opposing defenses, including UNC, and wished DD would go after him. Unfortunately he is now in Okie and will be wearing a championship ring by New Year. Point is will DD make a move or change on a defensive and/or offensive coord? We saw first hand how a change in one year with D coord can go from 6-7 to 11-1. I hope he is not a young TOB,BassPackerParticipantLets give him another raise, maybe that will help. Last nite was more about coach than players. Gott simple got out coached by a first year head coach at ASU. Don’t buy into the need more bodies. No way we should have been killed on rebounding and inside like was last night. From a much smaller squad and from a team that saw its main big man in foul trouble early. And we can’t exploit it. Its X’s and O’s and we ain’t Gott it.
BassPackerParticipantThe whole idea of LSU firing Les Miles is beyond me and college football. And it looks like it will happen. With no name mentioned in a resume would you fire a coach with a 10 yr record averaging 10 wins a season? And throw in these couple asterisks: One National Championship, 3 SEC Championships. And just 3 weeks ago his team is ranked #2 in the Nation with a Heismen candidate on the roster? Plus a 20 million dollar buyout?
I think there more coming out of those Louisiana Bayous than gas.
BassPackerParticipantWhen a coach make 7 million a year. 3 losses a year is unexceptible I guess. Maybe more who the losses are against. One can see alot of movement in the coming weeks. Strong out at Texas, hired at Miami. Les out at LSU, hired at Texas. Who that replaces Les could start a chain reaction. USC hire could see a huge swing in coaches movement. could we see the return of Butch Davis? I bet USC goes after a top coordinator, possibly like a Gene Chiznik at the CHeats. Alot could happen over at the hill depending on next 2 games, Fedora could become top of the list for several vacant jobs.
BassPackerParticipantDoes the bass team compete tomorrow? If not gonna be hard to show my face after two great Wolfpack performances so far this weekend.
