While having friends is never a bad thing, the Selection Committee is surprisingly consistent from year to year. The authors of the Dance Card discuss this because without consistency they could never have developed an algorithm to predict what the Selection Committee will do. The accuracy of the Dance Card algorithm proves to me that the Selection Committee is pretty consistent.^I agree. I feel each iteration of the committee is very objective in their subjective selections
My gut says we still get screwed somehow this year. We have been very fortunate lately.
backthebackagainParticipantEspn Bubble Watch, updated today (2/20)
“Last weekend, the NCAA held its annual media mock selection exercise. …
For example: This week, one committee member told Grantland’s Mark Titus: “I care more about who you can beat than who can beat you.” Do big wins matter more than bad losses? Detroit Free Press writer Joe Rexrode told his readers that the mock committee looked at “every possible number and intangible measure of quality,” including “individual players who make a team more viable — such as Green Bay point guard Keifer Sykes.” That sounds like a new idea, but it could easily explain NC State’s surprise T.J. Warren-led bid last season. The Chicago Tribune’s Teddy Greenstein wrote that the mock committee debated the meaning of a bad loss — whether, say, Iowa’s Jan. 20 blowout defeat at Wisconsin fit that category. (Our own Mike Tirico, who called the game, thought so.)There is a risk to parsing too much here; there’s (obviously) a huge difference between the mock committee and the committee itself.
Still, taken together, even mock discussions offer a useful reminder: The composition of the NCAA tournament is more art than science. For every “official” guideline the committee must follow, there might be a dozen personal quirks brought to bear when the bubble arguments get tight. One member doesn’t care about bad losses. Another member thinks a star player should push a team over the top. Another places more value on recent performance than official guidelines suggest. Another knows a coach tried to schedule well but got stuck with opponents having down years. Another ends a heated S-Curve argument by simply asking “Who would you rather play?” Another places way too much value on her own “eye test.” Who knows?
That’s why Kansas State — if it were, like, 15-12 and not 13-14, with an even remotely reasonable RPI — would be such a fun argument in the committee room. The Wildcats have great wins and terrible losses and a star guard (Marcus Foster) and a bunch of weird stretches in their season that could be interpreted very differently by people with different personal priorities. At the end of the day, that’s all the committee is: a bunch of people with opinions. We can analyze résumés and look at historical trends and try to introduce as much science as possible. Opinions, and the people who have them, are rarely so simple as that.”
Pretty fascinating.
seems too subjective in my opinion. Almost like its better to have a friend on the committee or something. There dont seem to be any set rules and objectives.
I have a funny feeling State is going to get screwed this year based on our recent luck with the selection process. I hope I am wrong
backthebackagainParticipantCan someone explain to me what Gott’s “off the court stuff” is? I gather he got divorced and bought a love nest? Where are y’all reading that, geez, I try to follow all the team news; never heard about that one.
The main thing I know of is his drinking and hanging out at bars during the season. My inlaws live in N Raleigh and saw him out quite a bit last year and a couple times this season. Add that to the other stories I have heard from my friends in Raleigh and I just dont think thats a good look to have your head coach trying to pick up women. I may be in the minority or totally wrong but I just dont think its a good thing. He has been known to hit Atlantic Beach pretty hard as well. Kindof has a billy gillespe feel to it.
Think about any other job, if your performance was suffering because of it wouldnt that be an issue? And another thing would be how comfortable would you be sending your kid to play for him if that was his rep?
I know if you post this on the other site they ban you so if this crosses the line here I will delete it.
backthebackagainParticipantHow can we salvage the season?

But who is going to hire him away?By “somewhere else” I didn’t necessarily mean another coaching gig. Plenty of former-coach broadcasters have had their chances to return to coaching and turn them down. I’m guessing that the money is vastly different, but for most the peace of mind seems to be worth it.
He is making north of 2 million and he just got divorced and bought a nice new house. He aint leaving all by himself. He would be crazy to.
backthebackagainParticipantI think he could get another decent coaching job but not at the money he wants. Besides who would even think about his buyout at this point? Only the big schools looking to make a move could afford it and there isn’t any big schools with that kind of money looking for GOTT. So….even if he wants out it is going to be two years at least if it’s his choice for financial reasons. He can stay and get paid top dollar for a few more years if DY can’t afford the $$$ to pony up for an early departure after next year.
I reluctantly agree that Gott is here for a minimum of 2 more seasons. Between his absurd contract and relationship with Yow he has two more seasons to completely burn this puppy down. I wonder though what the state of the program would be if he is a bubble team again, his recruiting is sub par again and he has more transfers next year. Would that ultimately FORCE Yow to do something or would she just lean more heavily on his sweet 16 and 3 straight berths as leverage against the revolting fan base?
Although, as I have mentioned before, his off the court stuff may be his ultimate downfall and is more of an issue than a lot of people want to admit.
backthebackagainParticipantI have yet to come up with anything new to add about the game. State had a shot – literally – and they didn’t execute. Rinse, repeat. Regarding Gott, I get the distinct impression that he would like to be somewhere else. That’s all I gott.
Certainly an interesting way of looking at things, he certainly has left some baggage here in Raleigh. A fresh start may be on his mind. But who is going to hire him away?
backthebackagainParticipantI think the flagrant foul was with between 2 and 3 minutes remaining.
We lost the game because we play undisciplined and took way too many contested shots early in the shot clock. Really curious what the time of possession was last night, but UVA just works the ball around so well trying to get open looks (which they did get, they just couldn’t hit them). Only when they are unable to get an open look and the shot clock is running down do they take contested jump shots.
Is it just me or does Anya just look lost when he’s on the floor. Just standing around acting like he wants to set a pick for someone, but doesn’t know where he should be on the floor. I can remember more than once he would look at one of his teammates, palms turned up with a “where am I supposed to be; what am I supposed to do” look on his face. He also got lost a few times on defense and gave up uncontested shots or layups.
I think Anya has checked out, has been for several games now. I think this is the tell tale sign he is exiting stage left.
backthebackagainParticipantA couple of life changing events has a bit to do with Cat showing profound confidence.
Again, so many issues to deal with, Gottfried resembles the Little Dutch Boy.
Ya wanna clue to what’s happening? Stop watching the ball. Take the whole picture in.
If you are inclined to lay it on Gottfried’s feet…so be it, but you’re missing alot.
I read these cryptic posts on both boards, I wish someone would just spell it out for me. I honestly have no clue what you are referring to. Quit being vague and just say it

There is something very very wrong internally right now.I would pay a lot for a tell all book outlining the truth concerning all internal and external forces surrounding our basketball program going all the way back to Valvano’s hiring. I watched State make the WF center lurch look like an overall #1 NBA draft pick for a day back in the late 80’s. I also watched $25,000 in gambling funds flow in and out of a frat house per week back in the day. Hell, there was a considerable amount of money floating around Bragaw in 1984. There has always seemed to be bad blood between our players from Sendek to Lowe to Gott’s first two years. What is behind all that? How many times over the past decades has the team taken the floor and let the opposition build a 10-20 point lead and then play even the rest of the game? There is a lot more to this decades old story.
I have said for years that its systematic. I think Chuck broke the trend but he pissed off a lot of donors in the process (murphy, Ramesy, etc) but at least he tore down the barrier and now we are seeing some dividends in football. With basketball its deep rooted. Not sure exactly why but the culture is not there for top notch program or even a program being run with an ounce of effectiveness. When Yow starts hiring her long time friend, that share the same agent, who was run off mid season from his last job and was not even coaching at the time, you know something is off within the Athletic Dept or even university wide. Woodson should have never gone against the committee to hire Yow and someone sure as hell should have vetoed her on hiring Gott. My god didnt any one do any due diligence or vet gott?
backthebackagainParticipantI think I am officially and completely off the Gott bandwagon. How this type of game happens in his 4rth year with your back against the wall all things considered is just unfathomable
backthebackagainParticipantWe should absolutely hammer Wake tonight. I will be in full panic mode if we crap the bed at this point in the season.

Even if no one transfers, we will not have enough scholarship players to scrimmage.I really wish Lewis and Purvis would have stayed
Couldn’t disagree more. Both guys showed that they could not accept low minutes with a healthy attitude. And neither guy would be getting hardly any playing time right now. No way either one of them would be getting non-trivial minutes over Cat, Lacey, Turner, and/or the twins. They just aren’t good enough. Which means they would be hurting the team with their attitudes.
I didnt know about any of the locker room stuff with either, I was just referring to ricks post and his comment about not having enough players for a scrimmage. I was just saying we could use Purvis and Lewis in that regard. I have no idea why either transferred. I thought Lewis played better down the stretch then cat
backthebackagainParticipantEven if no one transfers, we will not have enough scholarship players to scrimmage.
I really wish Lewis and Purvis would have stayed
backthebackagainParticipantRick: I’m with you. I believe we’re recruiting with 3 slots in mind. We’ve just not filled them.
Regardless of what is in the pipeline currently, you can’t take a 0 in a recruiting class because of scholarship spacing. That’s what did Al Skinner in at BC. It’s also why Sid’s “6 pack” class was so, uhm, questionable. People arguing the pipeline excuse just don’t seem to understand recruiting and the nature of transfers in college basketball.
If we have transfers out this year, and no one coming in next year, then this staff will enter the season with some actual heat. I still think due to contract situation that they could probably miss this year and suck out loud next year and nothing would happen, but I could be wrong. I also think we’ll sign a couple of kids late and probably see 1 transfer.
Thanks for your response. I feel the same way. I think we miss this year and next year is crucial. If he misses the next two I think he gets one more based on his sweet 16 alone and his relationship with Yow. By then however the split in the fanbase will be way more divided then the Herb years.

I will ask again, what happens next year if we lose Freeman, Cat and possibly Anya in the off season? Would that not be a red flag on MG or does the reset button of excuses get hit…….again.Because what I am hearing is that those 3 all could be gone.
Who are you hearing that from?
within the AD, Cat and MG dont see eye to eye on things, Anya and freeman worried about minutes
when you stop and think about it, it makes sense
abu and martins will be nucleus next year and if Anya doesnt get his stuff together he is the odd man odd
backthebackagainParticipantI will ask again, what happens next year if we lose Freeman, Cat and possibly Anya in the off season? Would that not be a red flag on MG or does the reset button of excuses get hit…….again.

backthebackagainParticipantNobody mentioned that we dropped off some NC State SH_T in Atlanta… Maybe this team has learned something about how it can go both ways. Hard for me to believe all the criticism of Gott and the team. Pretty young IMHO and learning how to gell.
we are 3/4’s through the season, if they aint gelled yet it aint happening. The young excuse is perpetual and exhausting.
backthebackagainParticipantWin is a win but, unless we have something great happen we are not going dancing. Lets face the truth. Gott is building for next year
and what happens when we are a bubble team again next year? I just dont think the dude can coach. His teams all the way back at Bama were the exact same.
I fully expect to lose Freeman, probably Anya (if his minutes keep decreasing) and Cat wouldnt surprise me either
I absolute detest all the “WTNY” talk.
backthebackagainParticipantIf, and I stress if, say Gott loses a combination of Abu, Freeman, Twins, Anya, or Cat is he on the hot seat next season just on general principle?
I can see (and probably expect) Freeman to go somewhere else and it wouldnt surprise me if Cat left as well.
I would put the twins leaving around 20%, Abu 20% and Anya 30+%. Those are unlikely to happen.
backthebackagainParticipantroo is all over it
win lose or draw I think Gott is our coach and by looking at our results, method of play and recruiting I think we may be in for a sh*t show over the next few seasons.
I still stand by that his off the court behavior is a bigger issue then people realize. The story about him in Atlantic Beach with the Hollers are legendary.
backthebackagainParticipantas Wufpack has mentioned several times… no more Marshall talk please…. that bridge was burned to the ground, pissed on, stirred, then pissed on again to make sure it was cold. For better or worse, Marshall and Yow aint gonna be working together no where no how.
what happened here, was it the low ball offer or something else?
backthebackagainParticipantI would bet the house that whomever plucks Arch away from Dayton is going to be very happy years from now. Again, the coaching acumen is in his veins.
I totally agree with this. While I dont think he is the savior as some but I think we have a hell of a lot better chance reaching the top 25 with Arch then Gott. Gott is the pure definition of fools gold.
I think his relationship with yow and making the tourney for 3 years (he and yow will milk that for all its worth) will keep him here for a while.
If his off the court stuff gets him fired and I put it at a decent chance, then you have to give Marshall a blank check and if he or Shaka Smart dont bite the suck it up and hire Arch.
