Alpha WolfKeymaster
I was a child too young to remember the last time we had a coach who had a legitimate chance to win the ACC dance with any team he brought. Missing Valvano.
The game’s been rigged since not long after Valvano left. For a low seed to win, they have to win two more games while the better competition rests. In reality, it’s killed the fun of it.
Alpha WolfKeymaster^ He does it because he can.
Until it starts costing him, either through fines or fouls in the game, he’ll keep on doing it.
It happens in a lot of sports. BJD will probably agree with me that Luis Suarez is probably playing the best soccer in the world right now, but he flops like a fish tossed on the floor of a boat every chance he gets. Refs reward him for it, the same as they do Lebron.
Alpha WolfKeymasterI think Gott is good enough to keep until we have a surefire replacement.
And there is the rub: a sure-fire replacement. We’d want a major program D1 coach with a history of strong recruiting, strong in-game coaching and someone who got to the tournament on a regular basis. Wouldn’t be cheap and those guys are fairly rare.
So the questions become: who? And would they be willing to come to NC State, a team with a pronounced mediocrity over the past 24-25 seasons? If we identified such a coach, could we afford him?
Alpha WolfKeymasterHEY CAT… see ya! I think Tyler is a little happier at this point
I think Barber’s ceiling is far higher than Lewis, who is slow, is not a consistent threat to shoot over a zone and is a severe defensive liability.
Barber needs to work on his decision making, something that can be taught. He is a good defender and he has a decent midranger that will improve with more experience.
Alpha WolfKeymasterThere is too much drama in this team still.
Lewis is mad when he doesn’t start. Barber is mad when he doesn’t start. BOTH have OBVIOUS flaws in their games. Lewis can’t shoot and can’t play defense, while Barber is ineffective as a distributor and relies on his athletic ability which causes turnovers. Anyway, you hear rumblings from parents and sisters — Lewis wants to go to Davidson, and Barber’s sister bellers on Twitter that he needs to leave after this season. It’s gotten old.
Alpha WolfKeymasterI guess it’s time to go and pretend I don’t give a damn.
Alpha WolfKeymasterBy all means let’s save our timeouts after the turnover and a chance to eat into the lead.
Game over.
Season over.
Alpha WolfKeymasterNice plan by Gottfried to put Lewis back in up one.
He’s a nice point guard but a total defensive liability.
Alpha WolfKeymasterAnd if the crowd would get in the game…
that might shake the Miami kids up a little….That silence is the sound of our season going down the drain.
03/01/2014 at 11:23 AM in reply to: Oh look, Technician suddenly has time to write articles! F' OFF! #43378Alpha WolfKeymasterI wouldn’t let a puppy crap on Technician these days. I’m afraid he’d come away with more on him than he left.
That’s not a “get off my lawn” moment. Its writing has dropped below a lot of high school newspapers and as you can tell from the op-ed piece linked above, the subject matter stinks.
And thanks, Technician, for getting my email and Facebook pages blown up by Carolina fans posting your article.
Alpha WolfKeymasterApp is now 0-7. That’s where my comment came from. They may be playing better than their record, but on the other hand, the record so far does sort of speak for itself.
Alpha WolfKeymasterThe boys finished up their sweep of hapless Appalachian State with a 3-1 win today. Jake Armstrong accounted for all three Wolfpack RBIs.
Alpha WolfKeymasterMost players have improved. Exceptions – Des has stagnated, Vandy has badly regressed, and Cat is going full Kenny Drummond.
Perfect analysis.
Alpha WolfKeymasterWe’re all doing a great job of making a win feel like a loss. Just sayin’.
Alpha WolfKeymasterCat seems to want to play ever game like it is an AAU game or the McD AA game. He’s got a lot of physical talent but seems to struggle in the team concept a lot of the time.
Look at all the great point guards, past and present – they all make the right pass at the right time, and when it isn’t there they either pull out and reset or they have their own ability to score. Cat seems to lack that killer pass right now on a consistent basis and his mid-range jumper needs some real work. If he can get his head around that, he’ll be an All-American. If he doesn’t and plays like it is all about him, he’ll end up playing in Europe, because NBA scouts aren’t going to recommend investing millions on the kid.
I think that the bigs are getting better everywhere except the free throw line in most cases. That should be a huge off-season goal for this team, improve at the line. It only take minimal coaching and a lot of repetition to master.
Finally, someone needs to step up and be the leader of this squad. All too often they look like a rudderless boat trying to navigate Grade 4 rapids.
Alpha WolfKeymasterI have no delusions of beating the ‘Cuse in their place. Last year’s team playing at its best wouldn’t have been able to do that. You’d have to go back to a Valvano team that would be able to do that.
Anyway, the boys played very well most of the night, with some of the sloppiness that’s been a problem in the past. They still managed it well, but they also managed to handle the moments of adversity and keep their cool. That bodes well for the games after Saturday, where I give them a chance in each one of them.
What the heck, we’re playing with house money up there, and if they play with no fear, who knows. Maybe Syracuse will come out flat and we can make it interesting. Interesting means <10pts.
Alpha WolfKeymasterWinston will not be able to resist the money that he’ll have at the ready. If he’s smart, he’ll realize that he’s only one play away from that signing cash evaporating.
Alpha WolfKeymasterI was just thinking the other night that I missed the days of the Weave-and-Heave and of being a bubble team at best for the NCAAT.
Oh, wait, I wasn’t.
Herb has made one tournament (or is it 2?) in five or so years.
Alpha WolfKeymasterI’ll take the win and call it karma for last year’s loss.
Let’s back those guys from Wake and then head to Clemson and get a couple of games over .500 in the ACC standings.
Is this a great team? No. But considering everything, the team is exceeding expectations a bit.
Alpha WolfKeymasterYeah, me too. I was disappointed once I started looking closer at it and the PP people started seeing the same things. The smack talk on that account goes way back.
Alpha WolfKeymasterIt’s looking as if it is a hoax account. Only 18-19 followers and he is only following journalists.
Alpha WolfKeymasterWait and see…come the end of the month, you’ll see various members of the media stoking the 20-win myth.
Alpha WolfKeymasterReally, it is time for Joe Namath to retire from public life. He’s become a cartoon — he seems like the drunk hanging on the lamp post.
Alpha WolfKeymasterRegarding the MLS graveyard, I can see European clubs starting to tie-in with MLS clubs and placing reserves there to get seasoned in competition. Man City is seeking to get a New York franchise for that very purpose. If it happens, look for all of the top PL clubs to follow suit.
The good news is that Chelsea may catalyze an MLS team in Raleigh, given their deep hooks into CASL. I kind of get tired of seeing the Plastics logo all around town wrapped by the local youth league’s name…but I do realize it is a good thing for CASL to get that level of support.
Alpha WolfKeymasterThe AD’s see a drop in revenue since they can’t soak the fans for a game against Northeast Sisters of the Poor JV, and coaches see a potentially losable game and a loss of a home game every other year.
IMO, the AD’s can bite it, an ACC team should NEVER be playing an FCS team in the first place. As for the coaches, man up, you don’t learn much from beating a hapless squad you have no business playing and fans would prefer a meaningful game anyway.
As usual, it is all about money, nothing in sports isn’t these days, so don’t expect it to happen.
