Pack 92 you are right, he had an agenda everywhere he worked, but especially at State. He destroyed every competitive fiber in every sport at State. That’s when we quit winning championships and it’s been a slow, agonizing grind trying to return to that level. Winning wasn’t a priority and wasn’t important. Hence a defeatist attitude evolved and our neighbors began to flourish. Winning is so important to them that they will risk decades of systematic cheating to win. As it turns out it was no risk afterall.
AeightParticipant44 you are correct about the new energy Dick Sheridan created, he ushered in a new era of NC State football, no question. Do I wish he had remained our coach, absolutely. No telling what we could have become had he stayed. He adopted the diamond logo from Furman’s design. He didn’t really have to resign when he did. The diverticulitis he had was treatable and he could had stayed but there were issues he couldn’t deal with and be successful, such as the unc grad AD we had at the time. I won’t even mention his name. Dick knew he couldn’t be successful with that prohibitive leadership. I recall his last recruiting cycle Dick wasn’t allowed to recruit and sign several players who eventually signed with unc. That did it. Then the wrong man was named as his replacement. We lost several good coached during that AD’s tenure including Ray Tanner, and the rest is history. It took 20 years to recover from that and we are still fighting the mindset that mediocrity is ok. Oh, don’t get me started.
AeightParticipantBassPacker you are correct with Avent’s “arrogant” comments. As I mentioned he is a motor mouth. He shoots off his mouth about things he can’t back up. I don’t think he could actually coach a team to a national championship. He is in denial about how good his teams are, and boasts otherwise. So making the NCAA really puts you in the elite crowd? Nice try there Herb, er huh, Elliot.
AeightParticipantOK, nobody seems to want to talk about it so I’ll start it. Avent should have been gone years ago. He does just enough to keep the admins happy and nobody pays too much attention to baseball anyway. It is just another sport at NC State that continues our mediocrity as a whole while everyone around us prospers. Duke baseball has now caught up and will pass us because they want to. UNC may not have made the NCAA this year but their body of work over the last 20 years puts us to shame. Avent is a motor mouth. A couple of years ago when Rodon and Turner played their last season Avent ran his mouth in the pre season guaranteeing a repeat visit to the CWS. We didn’t qualify for the freakin ACC tourney. In 20 years he hasn’t won a thing, nothing. We make the NCAA from time to time, I think he won one ACC tourney, maybe not, and we can’t hold serve at home this year. He’s Sendek on steroids. People just give up on finding a new coach in any sport, “well who are we going to get?” Well why don’t we try until we get it right? Geez, does anyone get ever get tired of this NC State “crap”?
AeightParticipantNevada??? Hee, Hee, Hee.
AeightParticipantThis great news but pay attention to what happens now. A #6 recruiting class in the nation is threat to the blue bloods and they and the media will do everything to stop it. They can’t allow NC State to rise. It’s ok if we win a little, even go to the NCAA tourney, but to threaten their position as basketball elites? There is going to be an all out assault from the local media, the N&O and WRAL, against this young man and his family’s financial records, and the team he played for in Turkey. They will also hound the NCAA to the point of under pressure making a decision, doing an extensive investigation, considering heresay evidence, whatever they can to disrupt this young man’s acceptance or even denial of admission. The media’s actions will make unc’s investigation look like child’s play because of the intensity and swiftness of action. It always happens with us. Stay tuned.
05/15/2016 at 8:05 PM in reply to: Russell Wilson's Commencement Speech AKA Ramblings Of A Lunatic #103408AeightParticipantA lot of you are forgetting the detail TOB went into in explaining what happened. The decision was totally Russell’s until TOB HAD to make a decision. Russell was playing pro ball as he had before but he always came back for spring football. That year he could not make a decision what he wanted to do. The door was open for his return but when TOB asked him if he was returning Russell could not give the coach an answer. Coach had to make a decision. He couldn’t be held hostage by a player that hadn’t decided if he wanted to return for one more year of football or try to make in pro baseball. When Russell could not give TOB an answer at that time, coach had to make a decision for the benefit of the entire team and not wait on one player. He then told Russell he was going with Glennon as the starter. When fall camp rolled around Russell decided he wanted to play his final year, but TOB told him the decision was made to start Glennon. This was known to Russell months earlier in the spring. Yes, coach could have welcomed Russell back as the starter but he had made the decision to play Glennon and coach was a man of integrity. He was not going to diss Glennon that way. That’s when Russell decided to look elsewhere. But in the spring the decision was totally Russell’s, so I don’t know where this crap came from in this story. They make it sound like he was just booted out. As it turned out Glennon was a heck of a QB but had little help. We are very proud of Russell as an NC State alum and player and he is a great rep for NC State. Very proud of his accomplishments and wish him great success.
AeightParticipantWhat a fantastic representation for our university. We are very proud of the 83 team and very proud of the class they represent themselves and NC State. This is the only “feel good” moment I’ve had regarding NC State athletics in a few months. Wonder why no current athletic dept representative was with them? Very proud day.
AeightParticipantI’d be willing to bet that PR will go into coaching when his playing career is over. He grew up a coach’s son and he has a passion for the game that will need to be fed, so coaching may become his passion in the future. He is a very detailed, and brilliant X and O guy, he showed that as a player here as a young man. I remember a TV game where the TV analyst did a clip on PR during film study and they were amazed at his knowledge of formations, coverages, etc. That will bode well for him as a coach. He is also very rich and probably won’t need to coach to make a living, so we’ll see, but I bet he does.
As far as Chuck goes, don’t knock him too much. Yes he had his issues but Chuck was loved by the fans, he was responsible for getting the redo started and completed to Carter Finley, and he absolutely brought an excitement to NC State football that has not been seen before or after. At one point we were becoming a football school, no doubt about it. I have never seen passion in our fanbase for football the way it was when Chuck was here, particularly in the early years. He also recruited better than anyone we’ve had and that excited everyone. He loves this school. I miss Chuck. Kind of wished they would have given him another year or two to see if he could fix things.
AeightParticipantWatching SportsCenter this morning, they talked about NC State’s buzzer beater in 1983 about as much as the game last night. Even showed a replay. Since it was uncCHEAT on the losing end it was nice to see, very nice indeed.
AeightParticipantThis basketball program is nothing but one big cluster…. They can’t recruit nobody, can’t keep nobody. When they do get a recruit they have to steal one from Elon, or Guilford. That’s where the twins belong anyway, so no great loss with them leaving, but it does hurt with bench depth. Gott has lost this thing in a big way. Debbie better get a handle on this quick, we are the laughing stock of the conference now. Next year we won’t be able to compete with Elon or Guilford.
AeightParticipantThis is good to hear. A post player of this caliber is certainly a missing link with our program. Hope Gott can land him. Thanks for the update Red…any info on other schools in hot pursuit?
02/25/2016 at 7:52 AM in reply to: A Victory Over the Tarheels Would Salvage an Average Season #100115AeightParticipantRyebread, I’ve saying all year that we have one ACC caliber player and an improving Abu. That’s it, and it won’t get any better because we don’t have anyone coming next year besides Smith. Cat is gone after this year. Last night you saw the difference in one thing…recruiting. I think Gott can coach well enough to win, but not consistently or at a championship level. UNC recruits talent and they recruit for depth. They also develop players thru out their college careers where you see improvement year to year. They are coached to run their system with precision, always seem to be in the right positions to make plays, play defense, block out, screen to free playmakers, make free throws, and all players can score. It’s coaching. We have one player who can score and we are wearing him out. Get used to it because I don’t see it getting any better any time soon. We have scholarships to give but can’t fill them with players to play at a level you saw last night. We just sit on them or bring in players that give us what we have. Sad.
AeightParticipantTOS means “the other site”, such as as Pack pride or The wolfpacker.
AeightParticipantRyebread and 92 owen you are corresct and I agree with your assessments. It’s not just the loss of players expected to be here this year and not being prepared for such loses. This is a systemic problem with the basketball program. With the exception of Dennis Smith, we have nothing coming next year…nothing. News here state we are going back to the JC route to fill spots or looking at other graduate players with one to play, to fill spots on the roster. This should not happen to a program at the ACC level. Gott got caught with his pants down and now there doesn’t seem to be a recovery plan. You can’t make a living with transfers and the lot, you have to have program building freshman recruits, 4 year players to build, create depth, and develop so you can absorb a loss or two when it happens. Someone mentioned Virginia’s formula for doing that and it works.
AeightParticipantThe plan was to have Lacey, Washington, and Henderson in the lineup this year. All three are scorers and would have made a huge difference in many of our loses. But that plan was shot and there was no back up plan or an ability to absorb the loses…so we have what we have, one elite caliber player, and the rest, well you know the rest. However, there is no explanation for playing sorry defense, unless it is not an emphasis, and it doesn’t appear to be.
AeightParticipantYou want to see something that is really telling? Go to TOS and look at the posting “This has To Stop”. It list the top 50 North Carolina players and how they bolted to schools out of state. There are a lot of 5 and 4 star players in the state this year that I was not aware of. That tells the story.
AeightParticipantI agree. We need to be reaching out to Archie now, let him know of our interest, but sadly this will not happen. What kind of future is basketball destined for on our current path? Archie is the smart play, he can be the future for years to come, but we are the lunatic fringe. What do we know?
AeightParticipantI don’t know packback. History says he will get a pass this year because of the last 4 years. But if that happens any chance of getting Archie may be gone. And if that happens the admins would have made a decision that will negatively impact basketball for years to come. Debbie needs to decide right now what kind of future NC State basketball will have. Archie is now 17-3, has been at Dayton 3 years and has better athletes, better talent, and better system than Gott after 5 years at an ACC school. The talent deficiency at State is incredible. After 5 years we have one player, only one player that is ACC caliber…period. Abu is improving but we are a one man team, let’s face it. Ga Tech had better athletes, better depth, and better talent. We have players that throw up a dozen air balls a game either as field goal attempts or free throws. With the exception of Dennis Smith we have NO ONE coming in next year, so this isn’t going to get better any time soon. The Martin twins, Anya, Freeman have no business playing at this level, and our bench is loaded with walk-ons. It’s unconscionable to me that after 5 years our talent gap is so deep compared to other conference schools. If the university is serious about restoring the basketball program to a championship level, they need to invest in an upcoming talented young coach, who is an alum, has a passion for the school, and can build a legacy for the next 30 years. I’m afraid Archie may be gone after this year, we’ll stick with Gott, and we’ll be having this conversation again and again.
AeightParticipantGlad it’s over and glad to get the win. Not happy the way they decided to play the 2nd half though. Now on the NFC champ game.
AeightParticipantRivera states at halfime they are going to keep trying to score? That’s bull crap. All they have done the entire 2nd half is dink and dunk on offense, and it may get them beat. Only up by 10 with 6 minutes to go after leading by 31 is pure coaching incompetence…playing it safe and playing the clock is a sure fire way to lose. Seattle wants to win a freaking ball game. If the Panthers lose this game after dominating the way they did, it is well deserved.
AeightParticipantNice post Mista Wolf. I agree completely. Not having shirt tails tucked and pants hanging down below butt cheeks are definite signs of lack of discipline and absolutely does not represent the university with class. Also shows lack of focus, more interested in the street look and playground attitude…and they play like they are on the playground.
FYI…Archie comes om at 7PM tonight…ESPN 2 I think.AeightParticipantEven a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.
AeightParticipantHow conceivable is it at year five for coach Gott that we have so many “gaps”…talent gap, scholarship gap, execution gap, coaching gap, player gap. This is stuff you go thru in year one, not year five. It’s hard to see us winning a single ACC game this year. I know losing Lacey and Washington really hurt, I mean really hurt, and is probably the differnce this year. But after 5 years you have to be able to absorb such loses and the great coaches are able to develop players year after year and recruit and develop incoming players to cover such loses. We were caught with our pants down and now are exposed with all the gaps that exist in the basketball program. I can’t complain with the past 4 years, NCAA bids and 2 sweet 16’s, not many can say that. So Gott can certainly get results. But we absolutely should not be where we are now, in year five, and after Dennis Smith we don’t have anything else coming in next year either. I’m riding the fence on a change right now, but we can’t afford to let Archie get away to another P5 school with little hope of getting him if the time comes.
AeightParticipantSounds like a good hire. Looks like the trend hiring young, smart offensive coordinators with today’s modern offenses, such as Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley, etc. Comes from a good coaching tree of Gus Malzhan and his spread offense. Need to recruit the players to “fit” his offense, but we have some good players in house now that can probably make it work. Now let’s work on the defense.
