You gotta love it when you’re sitting here in Wake County (or elsewhere), unable to get out onto the roads, holding tickets to today’s game (as are about 19,000 others). The State Highway Patrol and numerous area media outlets are telling us to stay off the roads. The governor, on tv, says that this game should nevertheless be played without anyone there to watch (so that we could hear the bounce of the ball and the players’ conversations), and on top of that, the ACC Comish and the Wolfpack AD are encouraging everyone to stay home and watch it on tv.

Will there be a ticket exchange or a refund? I paid $70 for these tickets, not to mention WPC dues and LTR fees. Do the paying fans matter anymore?

I get it that rescheduling wouldn’t be that easy, but come on- these two schools are only 20 miles apart, and this game could easily have been played at a later date. It’s not like one school would have to fly its team in here.

With all due respect to our ACC and Wolfpack officials, you got this one wrong.

Alpha, Channel 2’s tower is about 15 miles south of Greensboro along US220. If you’re within 70 air miles of it, you should get it with a rooftop, preferably a UHF antenna. WFMY has a 2000-foot tower and gets into most of Wake County with an outdoor antenna. Fox will be harder via Channel 8, whose tower is also in the same area slightly south, but is only 1250 tall. I get it some of the time but height is the deal with HD signals over 35-40+ miles away.

If Channel 5 doesn’t settle this thing before Sunday’s Panthers game, it probably won’t be until the end of February before a resolution. If it’s settled by Saturday at 2pm, State is probably doomed!

Channel 5 may be doing the Wolfpack a favor by keeping their game tonight off the screens of Directv viewers. And with a switch to NBC on February 29, that’s probably when Channel 5 (and Fox 50) will re-appear on Directv. I seriously doubt that WRAL will pay more money to the satellite provider since they’re switching networks in another 6 weeks.

Although the Duke game is on CBS this Saturday, tonight’s ACC Network game is on Channel 48.1 from Greensboro. Despite being on Dirctv and living in Wake County, my modest rooftop UHF antenna brings in all the Triad stations (CBS on Channel 2) except for NBC, which isn’t worth watching anyhow. A small loop, bowtie or rabbit ears antenna will bring in all the local stations here in Wake County, and probably a small wire or paper clip might even work. Just be sure to set the tv on “air” instead of cable, and run the autoprogram option to scan these stations in.

I’m not sure what tv is coming to down the road, but it seems the more technologically advanced we become, the more problems we have in getting the stations we want. Blame whoever, but start with the politicians in DC who let local stations totally control their network and keep anyone else from showing it on your tv, even when they decide to drop that network.

All you need to do is go back to the beatdown we got in our season opener in the PNC by W&M. Outplayed, outsmarted, outcoached and outeverythinged.

    That’s who this team is.

I think our AD is here as long as she wants to be, and I don’t think the success of the football and/or basketball coach will have much effect on DY’s tenure. The PTB and AD have too much power (and $$$), so why would they want to give that up? State fans have shown a long history of accepting whatever they get. Attendance figures prove this, and except for a few downturns, the numbers trend upward.

Wolfpack football and men’s basketball HCs who haven’t produced for 3 or 4 years are ROUTINELY given two more years, or three more years, or ever how many more years it’ll take for them to learn to be a good coach. You can’t re-invent the wheel; if they’re really GOOD, it’ll be obvious from the start. Holtz, Rein and Sheridan demonstrated that in football, and ditto for Valvano in his early seasons. Coach K didn’t have great seasons in his first 3 years at Duke, but those teams, which were superior fundamentally to anything we’ve put on the court in a long, long time, were building blocks. At State, we’re perceived to have more blockheads than we have building blocks. When was the last time we saw a recruiting class brought in for the sole purpose of building a program? It hasn’t worked too well with transfers, that’s for sure.

Right now, our football and basketball programs are in a long drought when it comes to good fundamental recruits, and neither has fielded a decent DEFENSE in some time. The State way has become to just throw the best athletes you can get on the court or field and hope they can outjump, outrun or out-whatever everybody else. As much as talent matters, football and basketball are still TEAM sports.

We’ve got football teams that don’t seem to know how to play defense, and we’ve got basketball teams that can’t shoot free throws, let along a 15-foot jump shot. Just going .500 in the league now seems to be a stretch for b-ball, and football seems to be mired near the bottom of the league. Everybody remembers 1974 and 1983, but few seem to remember the significance of 1979 and 1987.

Until NCSU gets an administration that is willing to admit that what they’ve been doing for the past 25 years isn’t working and will never work, and makes MAJOR changes, we will continue to dwell near the ACC cellar. No other ACC school gets less bang for its athletic buck than the Wolfpack.

As an LTR ticket holder for over 20 seasons in both football and basketball, I’m in for one more season. But after that, without something really changing, I’m done. I can take that money and buy a big-screen tv and sit home and cheer for State, Wake Forest, Duke and for whoever’s playing UNC, plus I can root hard against Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, Pitt, Louisville and BC, those wonderful Big East schools that have made the ACC even more wonderful.

We arrived almost an hour early last night, and there was already much traffic in and around the PNC. The lower level wasn’t full at first, but eventually it did just about fill up, and the crowd was very supportive. Much of the upper level was full, probably a good walk-up crowd.

The game was lost in the first ten minutes, when UL raced to a 27-13 lead. They simply were running all over the Pack inside and their D bothered many of the State players. State simply got into a hole too deep to climb out of, although several times they made many of us think they would. Louisville is a tough, tough team, and is probably a Sweet 16 team, maybe better. The effort was great, but we were simply outmanned.

In its quest to become a football conference, the league has instead become a more brutal basketball endurance contest. It’s too early to tell where we’ll fit in standings-wise, but there’s a fair chance we’ll play on opening day of the ACCT, or probably the 2nd day if not on Tuesday. As far as the NCAAT, way too early to rule it out. Having Barber gives us a chance to win many games we might not be expected to win. One of two of those just might get us into the Dance.

I don’t have any problems with the way the team is being run right now. The only thing I’d like to see is an occasional appearance by some of the better “bench players”, which would rest the starters a little and fire up the crowd.

Fans need to ease up on the personal insults. This team is NOT a good-shooting team and the free throw line exposes this. It may take a change in the way we approach future recruiting. Athleticism and dunking are important, but eventually we’re going to have to get more players, preferably forwards, who can knock down the 15 to 20-footer. Relying on dunks against stronger ACC foes Duke, UNC, UL, Pitt, Syracuse, Miami, UVA and ND isn’t likely to get us many quality league wins.

These coaches aren’t going anywhere; who’d want them?

Everyone is worried so much about offense, but until we can put a defense on the field that can actually stop somebody, nothing is going to change.

I’ve given up on us ever winning a division title, and in fact doubt that we’ll ever break 4-4 in the ACC given the division alignment and our coaching staff.

I have never seen Wolfpack football at a point as low as I see it now. Everyone keeps saying we’ve got all this talent coming in, but I don’t see it. And if we did have it, would this staff know what to do with it?

Two more seasons, everybody says. Then what?

Regarding the post “join the SEC and it will suck….Too far to travel for away games…..”

What could possibly suck worse than not being able to play your closest conference rival (Duke) who is 20 miles away but once every 8 or 9 years, yet have to travel darned near all the way to Canada every year to play either Syracuse or Boston College? That would be far worse than having to play Vanderbilt and Kentucky each season.

I was originally opposed to a switch to the SEC, but now am on board with BJD. There will probably be a few more moves before all this stuff settles, and NCSU should do everything it can to get the hell out of this league. It’s a Blue League and always will be. Being an SEC member would significantly upgrade our football recruiting. Basketball wouldn’t be any worse off because in the ACC we are likely to be no better than a middle of the road team.

If the fan sentiment is to keep Doeren at least 2 more seasons with no questions asked, we’re doomed to mediocrity and another coaching search in 3 to 4 years. I don’t dislike Doeren, but honestly, I have seen little from this staff in 3 seasons that makes me think we’re going to turn a corner anytime soon, if ever. When we first had Holtz, Rein and Sheridan, it didn’t take much to figure out that we had something special. I just don’t see it here now.

    The beat goes on……

Field goal shooting is somewhat variable from game to game, but the stat last night that should most concern Pack fans is the 13-26 from the FT line. This team simply cannot shoot the ball and I don’t think they’ll ever get much better at it on a consistent basis. Barber is a decent shooter from inside the arc, but most of the time he ends up with the ball in his hands at the end of the 30 seconds and has to take a long shot he obviously doesn’t want to take.

I blame the 30-second shot clock for this. The talented teams should love the faster pace of a shorter shot clock, but the teams who struggle more to create shots will suffer.

I am old school and hate the damned shot clock, which I think has ruined the NBA (along with its hip-hop attitude players), and is turning the college game into a miniature NBA. Problem is, teams like State who don’t have the talent to run up and down the court repeatedly can’t keep up with the teams who have top-tier talent.

The women’s game is even worse with its 30-second clock. Most women’s teams can’t get into any kind of an offense with such a short time of possession, and it’s even worse in Division II and III. These players are being forced into a pace that assures a sloppy game.

Shortening the men’s clock this season to me was a bad move, and I’m already seeing bad results just from watching State’s inability to set up their offense in a shorter time frame.

You gotta LOL at the prospect of State playing Akron in Detroit! And we all know what happened the last time those two met on the football field.

And as far as the playoffs expanding to 16 teams, or even 8, that’s about as likely to happen as Notre Dame joining the ACC in football.

    It ain’t gonna.

The bowl that State gets will most likely be a high-priced affair in a faraway place few care about traveling to, against an opponent who would look like State’s OOC opponents this season. What is to be gained here? I went to the old school that taught me to believe that a bowl game was a reward for a good season. This has been a lousy season, one that I believe was even worse than the last one.

I say put State and Duke in the same bowl. After 5 or 6 years, isn’t it about time that we got to play them again on the gridiron? And for goodness sakes, play the game in Boise or somewhere way out west, since the schools are only 25 miles apart.

Or, heaven forbid, start letting these awful bowls be played on the home field of the higher-seeded team. At least give one set of fans some semblance of a reason to attend.

I sit up behind the State bench, and couldn’t help but notice how Henderson struggled just to stand up and sit down last night. I’m not nearly as young, but I fractured my leg 2 months ago and getting back to normal has been a struggle. I can’t imagine Henderson playing effectively this season. I think it would be in his best interest to sit out the season and get well. He would be a bigger help to next year’s team as a healthy junior rather than playing as a hobbled junior this season.

Last night was more of a bricklaying contest than it was a basketball game. Saying that this team looks like it doesn’t shoot well is like saying that Paris doesn’t look real safe right now.

It has always amazed me how some people can throw down acrobatic dunks with defenders all over them yet can’t shoot simple free throws.

I’m not worried about Barber; what he needs is help in the backcourt. Abu needs to sit out the first half and play just the second half until he fouls out. The Martins and Rowan are going to be ok and in fact already are. Maybe Henderson could be redshirted.

If we have as good a class coming in next season as I’ve heard, this team might be really good by February of 2017, good enough to make most of us forget this season.

We cannot develop a quality QB any more than we can teach somebody how to dunk. Until we get REAL talent at this position, we’ve pretty much reached our ceiling, which is beating only cupcake teams, mediocre ones at that, and beating only the bottom of the barrel ACC teams.

In fact, during our last 2 seasons and this one, all 11 ACC opponent we’ve faced have beaten us at least once. And most of these losses haven’t even been close.

We cannot develop a quality coach, either. A mediocre coach can get by for awhile if he has a Philip Rivers-caliber QB.

But the sad truth is, if you’ve got it, you can’t hide it. We are a mediocre football program and as bad as I want this trend to change, I just don’t see it anytime soon. I hope we don’t have to wait as long as the UVA fans have had to wait if things don’t work out for us.

HWSNBN’s similarity to our current football program is that yes, he could wipe up the bottom of the conference, but only if the Pack was playing at home. I honestly don’t remember HWSNBN’s teams ever winning a significant road game, at least not in the ACC, except when they won at Chapel Hill when Matt Doherty was coach. EVERYBODY, except Clemson, was beating the 8-20 Heels in Chapel Hill and just about everywhere else that season, though.

At least football has now won two road games this season. Granted, the Wake and BC teams this season are among the worst ACC teams in memory, but Doeren got 2 Ws ON THE ROAD. Give him that.

But with this team, one that I doubt would have had much if any more success with Holtz or Sheridan, the timing isn’t good. Doak Campbell on Homecoming against an angry FSU team, followed by a classic trap game vs an underrated Syracuse team, and a home finale vs UNC with the students home on Thanksgiving break may not set this team up to finish well.

Whoever’s responsible for State-UNC on Thanksgiving weekend should have their asses kicked until their noses bleed.
