Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions. First, congrats to John Swofford in his “New And Improved ACC”. Gotta love it even more now that Syracuse basketball is part of if not most of (along with Duke, UNC and Louisville) the ACC.

I’m sure that for next season’s Duke-Syracuse game(s), Dickie V can tell the ESPN viewers that Syracuse is really a class act.

And hopefully CBS will pull out their big guns for tomorrow’s game here, reminding us of just how fortunate we should all feel that we’ve again been graced by the presence of Coach Jim Boeheim. If he’s out for the first half of next season’s ACC schedule, then why isn’t he out tomorrow as well?

The BC loss has put State in a predicament of having to win at least their next 3 if not 4 games to reach the NCAAT. Beating Clemson and Syracuse plus a fellow bottom-feeder in the ACCT next Wednesday isn’t likely going to improve State’s stature with the Selection Committee.

If State gets to next Thursday in the ACCT and wins, that might do it. Maybe. I know what the “bubble experts” keep saying, but State, to me, has reached the point that they simply cannot afford another bad loss. We know that they’ve got some really good wins, but they’re really stinking up the joint right now after the BC disaster. Being swept by Clemson would guarantee the Pack an invite to the NIT if they aren’t playing in Greensboro on March 14.

Simply stated, this team has GOTT to start beating the teams that they should beat. They’ve GOTT to start playing DEFENSE. Will they do that tonight? Who the hell knows? Least of all me.

Wulfpack, no need to worry about us being in the same bracket with Kentucky (or Duke, for that matter).

Won’t happen. Neither of those two will be in the NIT.

You can argue RPI, strength of schedule, whatever. The sad and sorry truth is that NC State has lost a dozen games so far this season and will lose at least one more, or maybe two or even three before Selection Sunday.

The Wolfpack went off the bubble today and landed squarely in the middle of the NIT field.

    Wait ’til next year……

Who are we pulling for, The U or UNC-CHeats? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

As for our game, if we see the same type of defensive effort we saw last Tuesday, we’ll be in great shape.

    DEEEEFENSE!!

40-70 in the Pac-12? But, but, but………Bill Walton insists that the Pac-12 is the greatest conference in the nation, so it’s understandable that HWSNBN might struggle a little bit against those powerhouses like USC, Colorado, Cal, Washington State and Oregon State. Desert b-ball is hard!

Herb was a PC hire by a female AD and I agree with BassPacker- he ain’t going nowhere. He’s an AWFUL coach.

An ASU-NCSU matchup will be a done deal.

The only thing I’ve ever wanted State to have in regard to their uniforms is red and white only, with STATE on the front.

And preferably with no names on the back.

Michigan State gets it; we don’t.

As long as State plays the kind of defense we saw last night, they are going to Dance in March.

    They could even be Sweet.

Maybe we Triangle-area fans should be upset that our local ACC affiliates aren’t carrying the Syracuse-Notre Dame game instead.

As for the 2003 win in the Dean Dome, that was a sloppy win against as bad a UNC team as I’ve ever seen; everybody seemed to beat them there that year, excepting Clemson, of course. I think Matt Doherty’s team finished 8-20.

Anyway, tonight’s game will produce two almost certain things- the Food Lion lion giving his two cents worth, and the Wolfpack going something like 4-24 from behind the arc en route to getting the hell beat out of them.

Georgia Tech basketball has become the Rambling Train Wreck. No team in the ACC gets less out of their players than the Yellow Jackets, period.

I wonder if Tech fans miss Paul Hewitt yet?

WolfWiz11’s comments about covering his State shirt in the Dean Dome was very telling about this series when the games are played in Chapel Hill.

Just about every State team I’ve seen play since the 1980s has played like a scared rabbit in that place. A Wolfpack win there tomorrow night would shock me more than an ACCT run to Saturday night. Heck, a strong State performance would be almost as surprising.

I’m probably one of the few on here who think Kyle Washington should be playing a lot more, but remember, our most damning loss of the season came on an inside possession by Notre Dame, who pounded it inside against us to send the game to OT. KW sat out most of that second half, and I honestly believe had he been in the game at the end of regulation, ND would not have gotten that tip-in. UNC has just killed us inside lately, and you can bet they’ll pound it inside again Tuesday night. I think Gott will have to play #32, but I don’t think sitting out the entire VT game helped him or the team, especially with Carolina up next.

If the 3s aren’t falling for us tomorrow night, just where will the offense come from?

I wouldn’t call last night’s game one of our better efforts, but we got what we needed. However, like eas observed, we’re going to need our bigs. That will be especially be true at UNC and Clemson and here vs Syracuse. I don’t know what’s going on with KW, but if he continues to sit, this is not going to make us a better team IMHO.

UNC, always a house of horrors for us, will be a very tall order without the interior presence of #32. And having #15 wouldn’t hurt us either.

If a win in Chapel Hill, on top of an ACC and overall losing record is worth this much, think of how much he can make if State ever breaks .500 in the ACC.

    Mind-boggling.

I was trying to be logical instead of emotional. We’ve simply racked up too many losses this season, and all I’m saying is that if we don’t get at least 20 or 21 wins, it’s going to be the NIT.

I have no doubts whatsoever that the Wolfpack is capable of beating anyone in the country, but they’ve simply got to stop the losing and start winning. We haven’t won 2 straight games since December 12.

I see only two ways for this team to get to the NCAAT: win out the regular season plus at least two in the ACCT, or simply win the ACCT.

It’s not any more complicated than that. We’ve lost too many games at this point, and too many of those have been truly bad ones, most of which came at home, where they shouldn’t.

State won the ACCT in ’83 with the ACC’s 3-point line, but I don’t remember a shot clock being used then.

IMHO State would have never won the ’83 title had a shot clock been in place. Villanova did win with one in ’85 but it was with a longer 45 second clock, plus they were playing a familiar opponent and shot an unheard-of nearly 80% for the game. Nowadays, most teams can’t even shoot 80% from the free throw line.

The shot clock has turned the college game into a talent contest, played more and more by less-talented players than in the past. Shooting percentages and scoring are down, and the 3-point shot has contributed greatly to that.

We haven’t had a real Cinderella make the Final Four during the shot clock era except maybe for George Mason. UVA has figured out how to play against the clock, but now I read in the morning paper that there’s a push to shorten the shot clock in order to improve the game.

The more the college game looks like the NBA, the worse it becomes.

Yesterday was a good win and showed that this team CAN be a formidable opponent, even for good teams.

But until State can break into the 20-win column, the NCAAT will probably remain a dream.

UVA played without Justin Anderson, which would be about like us playing without Trevor Lacey. We had ’em at home, and still couldn’t finish. This doesn’t look like even a bubble team anymore, and in fact is starting to look like a candidate for the NIT’s last four in.

Lacey can make almost impossible shots from 30 feet and beyond in win-or-lose situations, but when he’s close to the basket, like several other of our players, he can’t finish. Plus, there were way too many quick bricks, as someone called them.

The effort was good, but without good fundamental play, it doesn’t matter much. The Martin twins seem to be the only two players on this team who have a fundamental grasp on how to play this game. They certainly are the only ones who know when NOT to shoot. No knock on the coaches, but I still don’t understand why Kyle Washington is usually on the bench late in games. Tonight we were getting killed inside late in the game, and I felt we had two quicker and better defenders on the pine in Washington and Freeman.

Forget the NCAAT. A .500 record or better in ACC is out the window, and there’s a real possibility this team could finish .500 or even worse overall. Heck, even Tuesday at the ACCT isn’t out of the question. All in all, I’d say the biggest problem is that the Pack’s score tonight just about matches its basketball IQ.

I’m heading out there for a meal at the Arena Club and a game that hopefully won’t give me indigestion.

This is a pivotal game, big time. If this season is to be salvaged, the team needs to do something tonight that will stick the rest of the season. Hitting a bunch of threes won’t do it. Hitting free throws will. Playing great perimeter defense won’t. Playing consistent team defense, especially interior, will.

Last season’s game here was something like 76-45. The last one, in Charlottesville, wasn’t pretty either, but at least we were in the game. Hopefully this one will be even better for us.

In a low-scoring game like UVA prefers, points off turnovers could be huge. This is to me the area where State can disrupt the Cavs and give itself a chance to win a game they need badly. Another close loss to another ranked team won’t cut it anymore.

    Hold THEM under 50.

I also congratulate Vinny and the seven other ACC Legends (Battier, Budd, Grant, Edwards, Clark, Hand and Cremins). But not so much the other 7.

Why? Because these other 7 never played or coached in the ACC. I repeat: these other seven NEVER PLAYED OR COACHED IN THE ACC. Their records are not in the ACC record books.

So how can they be ACC Legends? Curious minds want to know.

highstick, the first time I ever heard this one was at a Millbrook (Raleigh) basketball game in the late 1960s:

    Whomp ’em, whomp ’em,
    Side the head!
Hey whomp ’em up side the head!!!!!

And with the McKaig boy (Bennie?), they usually did.
