Jiggie, There’s a smart-arsed comment that fits here: If they can’t take a joke, frig ‘em.

Yes, I was laying the sarcasm on thick with my first response to the ODU mistake but there was truth weaved in there.

Yeah, today’s not a good day to get on my bad side. Best to let me discover that hanger on my own.

It’s a minor error that doesn’t take away from the article. You guys also don’t realize that it’s not as simple as fixing a word.doc when editing. It isn’t difficult but I wasn’t going to spend the time fixing it.

    your charts list ODU

Thanks for your quality input. I’m sure no one can over look me using the same chart each week and the obvious mistake of forgetting to change those 2 blocks this week.

Maybe we can refund everyone’s monthly fee and print a retraction?

Well we all know I’m half full of crap in predicting conclusions, just look at my Politiboro results.

Just skimmed it. It’s the craziest time of year now that youth sports has started up again. A coach’s job is never done.

Grey, it’s okay. My response wasn’t one in anger, just USF was beyond awful last season, had some promise heading into this one but still not much better than a couple of more wins and then the 2 games they’ve had this year were polar opposites in their play on the field. I can’t even make a guess of how their defense will play. If USF’s defensive results for the first 2 games had been reversed against their opponents then it would be easier to infer how they might play against the Pack but as of right now they are a bigger mystery on defense than anything State has shown on offense. Their RB Mack had a video game performance against WCU but wasn’t close to as effective against MD and both their QB’s are lacking. The only guarantee is their Kicker and he alone I think will keep them in the game as long as USF can get him to atleast the 35 yard line.

The Maryland game may have been a fluke and they still aren’t any better than they were last year or against WCU but maybe they are. State has put up average numbers in both rushing and passing against GSU and ODU, the latter I think everyone would agree has a horrible defense. Taking what we’ve seen from last year and this year for both teams, it’s just as safe to say State will struggle running the ball against USF as it is to say State will easily handle USF’s run defense. The real question is has USF improved at defense because we haven’t seen any big improvements from State.

No ill will and I welcome anyone who is willing to have an honest conversation, whether we agree or disagree. What is it about my reasoning that you disagree with? Explain to me your point of view.

Thanks for the work on the preview. I don’t agree with some of your reasoning but hey, we don’t have to agree do we?

I think our road record before these coaches and huge number of sophs and frosh got here is really of no consequence to them. I can’t see Doeren wringing his hands saying, “Woe is me. Our road record sucks.” Just like our winning 5 in a row didn’t bother *nc.

I hope Taggart plays with 2 tight ends the whole game. Bring a crowd together at the line of scrimmage. Running lanes are far more available in the spread than in a tight formation.

I disagree with the Bulls having an advantage over our offense but like I said, so what that we disagree. Just because MD turned it over 6 times doesn’t mean we will.

Again thanks for the work and thought you put into this post.

I did mention USF is a conundrum. Their defense was awful against WCU but forced lots of TO’s and held Maryland in check. Who knows what they’ll do against State but I have to base my reasoning on something and 2 games isn’t much, for both teams.

As for the road record, yes Doeren won’t be harping on the negative but it does point out just how bad State has been on the road with most of the current players.

As much as I want to say State is better than a team that went 2-10 last year and was awful, State was just as awful and outside of an improvement in QB, what has State shown that they are head and shoulders better than USF in doing?

    West Virginia (+3.5) @Maryland [12:00 B10 Network]

Toss up game and since I hate the twerps and they turned the ball over 6 times at USF.

    Central Florida (+9.5) @Missouri [12:00 SEC Network]

I picked against the Tigers in Toledo last week and got burned, they better not let me down two weeks in a row.

    Louisville (-7) @Virginia [12:30 ACC Network]

Petrino vs London and only a TD?? Yeah right.

    Georgia (-5.5) @South Carolina [3:30 CBS]

The chickens front 7 is awful and will get destroyed by UGA’s OL and Gurley.

NC State (-2) @USF [3:30 CBS Sports Network]

Toss up game. First game on the road. State has no defense. Offense is slow to start. I’ve got no clue how this will result so I’m picking the better offense since USF couldn’t score more than 17 points off 6 TO’s and one was a defensive TD.

Fortunately, Wake and Presbyterian are no better, and BC and USF may not be. Beyond that, no too optimistic.

I don’t know if BC is that far behind. They did run the ball pretty dang good against Pitt. I can see them getting 300 on the ground against State.

I take away from this game that State has no pass rush and that exposes the poor pass defense. State also can’t stop the run or tackle their way out of a paper bag. All 3 of those things will prohibit wins against better teams than ODU this year because State will allow more points and score less. Improvement from the front 6 is a must.

I think it’s safe to say State’s D is just as awful in 2014 as it was in 2013.

Can’t stop the run. Can’t stop the pass. Gonna be a long, long season.

I want to point out just a couple of things, just in case I haven’t made it clear already, we have absolutely no idea what this team can and can’t do on either side of the ball. It’s very difficult to draw many conclusions from the game against GSU:

    1. GSU runs a non-conventional offense so not many on D are prepared for assignment D and thus the big plays.
    2. State was breaking in a brand new QB who hasn’t played a game in 2 years and looked off in the first half.

The only thing I think we could take away from it was the confirmation that State is severely lacking in talent considering GSU looked equal or better.

ODU will play the Spread but I still don’t think there are any positives State will be able to take away from playing this team. If State beats the snot out of them we don’t know if it’s because ODU still isn’t ready for the FBS level as last year’s performances show. So the only things to gleam from today’s game is looking for the negatives, or the areas where we struggle, and if they are similar to last year, and last week, then we can infer State will continue to struggle in these areas all season. Just for the record, while GSU may help State for GT this year, playing ODU and Presbyterian do nothing for State, even the quest for the almighty “Bowl Eligibility”. Presbyterian does absolutely nothing for this team, especially when coupled with ODU this season, and if you think we can’t glean any positives from today’s game then wait until State plays a team that is lacking even more talent than State does.

This isn’t about Poo Pooing on State, this is about what can we realistically learn about this team before State plays a conference game. Just as a reminder, State’s first 2 ACC games are against FSU & Clemson. I believe the only things we can learn are, as VaWolf pointed out, areas you struggle in against weaker competition will only get worse as you play teams with better talent.

Fans all too often maximize the positives and minimize the negatives in these types of games. I tend to concentrate on the negatives since too many of the perceived positives disappear when playing better opponents…while the negatives will only get worse. It appears that you take the same approach.

Yup, only see the worst because bad is really bad against lesser opponents while good could be fools gold.

With so few offensive starters returning, it’s hard to judge just how good ODU’s offense will be this season. Nevertheless, a poor defensive performance will certainly be bad news when looking towards ACC play.

It’s really tough to determine how good they really are on offense but a great QB can make up for a lot. If you’re going to be young it might as well be in the receiver corps since they can excel the fastest.

Hipster Cat is responsible for our passing game now? I is intrigued.

It’s more of a hoping that Hipster Cat is representative of the passing game; at least vs. ODU.

Missouri (-5) at Toledo [12:00 ESPN]
The Rockets get the rare return visit by a Power 5 school, without the game getting bought out, and take advantage of it. The Rockets return all but 1 on their OL and played great against the Tigers last year. Add in the Alabama QB transfer and I think Toledo may have enough at home to win it outright.

Michigan State (+12.5) at Oregon [6:30 FOX]
Both teams played scrimmages last week, so who the heck knows what either team has to offer. I’m gonna guess the Ducks go all techmo bowl on the Sparty’s and easily cover.

    Duke (-19) at Troy [7:00 ESPN3.com]
The Trojans defense is thin and weak. They barely put up any barrier against UAB last week and couldn’t stop them from scoring. Cutcliffe will easily penetrate their defense and unload on Troy.

BYU (+3.5) at Texas [7:30 Fox Sports 1]
Putting the T back in Texas takes more than words and an offseason. While I think Strong is the man Texas needs right now I have a feeling the Mormons will storm into Texas and ride off on their bikes with a Win.

    ODU (+16) at NC State [6:00 ESPN3.com]
A veteran QB who threw for 281 yards (against Hampton) will find the same ease of passing against the Pack’s porous secondary. What’s worse is their RB who averaged 6.2 ypc while gaining 137 yds will find the Pack’s run stop even worse than the secondary. I believe the Pack will win but cover?? Just don’t see it happening if they wait 30 minutes again before deciding to play football.
