1.21 JigawattsKeymaster
The refs won’t call a foul on UVA even if they pulled out a club and started beating our players.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterBSW keeping us close
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI don’t care if Washington did make a 3, he doesn’t need to be taking those shots unless the shot clock is under 0:01
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterThe problems are still the same bill…
On offense the pack struggles against a pressure defense and during their losses they struggle to rebound the ball as well.
On defense when they lose they aren’t creating difficult shots and they struggle at defensive rebounding.
Saturday’s game against Pitt showed they still struggle at all aspects even in the win. The strong halfcourt defense that prevented easy shots for Pitt is what allowed State to comfortably win.
So what’s wrong with the Pack is still there, if they don’t fix the problems then they’ll struggle. Today they fixed one area and it benefitted them.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterQuality defense mixed with quality offense resulted in a comfortable win today. Still some areas to improve on, mainly defensive rebounding and responding to pressure defense, but you can’t become great overnight so it’s a nice start on the road to getting better.
What is also impressive is State did this against a team that is their equal through this season.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI’m very happy to see State play good defense (still not happy with the defensive rebounding) and good offense against a team that is their equal.
A Good Defense is NECESSARY

Pitt 6/17
State 10/151.21 JigawattsKeymasterPitt is definitely not a quick team.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterWow, look what happens when you actually steal the ball and push it up the court for a fast break?!?!?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterthat’s twice now that Lacey has had the ball and everyone else is standing around, lacey takes a contested shot that goes in. Got lucky 2x.
Not a fan of the shot selection, but do you make an exception for Lacey? Completely agree on the offensive complacency though – unless it’s a strict iso.
Rick – no press from Pitt yet
The first shot was a bad shot, the second was a tough shot but still it’s a result of the rest of the team standing around instead of any type of movement. If it was going to be an isolation play they didn’t do a very good job since the lane was still occupied. Looked more like they were just spaced out evenly.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI just got home and like the score. How have we looked?
Have the pressed any?Rick, Pitt pressed during the first 4 and for some stupid reason stopped.

1.21 JigawattsKeymasterTeam identity still undetermined, but workin on it
I’m guessing that’s because it’s leader doesn’t have one and/or hasn’t given it to them on a daily basis.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterFor the season Pitt is the very close to state offensively so the Pack is doing a great job on defense with 1 exception, rebounding.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterPitt can’t shoot and if it wasn’t for State’s inability to grab a defensive rebound consistently then the Pack would have a double digit lead.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterDoes anyone else think it would be beneficial to run the Wood Trailer play for Turner?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterCaptain Obvious here…Pitt with 8 more FGA’s than State, Pitt 5 OR State with Zero OR, hard to win games if that trend continues.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterLack of boxing out on defensive rebounds. God I miss Howell.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterCat is really the only guy who can force tempo like that, and he’s basically in PSTD mode at present.
It’s not even about dribbling the ball up the court really fast but more of no one is ever breaking towards the other basket and no one is looking down the court for the outlet pass.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterCaleb Martin has at least responded to Gottfried’s call to arms. Great playing by him today.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterAnyone else notice State never looks to push the ball on a defensive rebound? They get excited on blocked shots but a normal defensive rebound is so ho hum that we instantly go into slowdown mode and settle for halfcourt play?
12/30/2014 at 8:26 PM in reply to: Bad defense. Bad offense. Bad. State lays egg, loses 76-60 #674681.21 JigawattsKeymasterThis is a game where the numbers don’t do it justice in explaining just how big of a flaming pile of crap this team is producing. First let’s look at the numbers…
125%!!!! That’s just sickening for anyone who takes the smallest modicum of pride in defense especially against a team as offensively inefficient as Cincinnati. (For those that don’t know 100 is the average, or a team scores 1 point per possession, so in this case Cincy scored 1.25 points per possession) The best performances by Cincinnati this year were 130 (Middle Tennessee) and 124 (Stony Brook). Heck 5 times this year they’ve been held under 100 to the likes of St. Francis, PA (84), Eastern Illinois (83), and VCU (78).
So many things in this game have been seen and repeated in other games:
Poor rebounding (lack of positioning/boxing out)
Turnovers against any pressure
No forcing of TO’s (a staple of the Gottfried system)
Constantly being out of position on defense (usually because a teammate has done something stupid and is leaving the rest of the team to leave their man to cover).
Now add lack of intensity from the tip off, digging yourself into a hole that is difficult to overcome except against the likes of La. Tech. This team has no identity. What can you point to and say is a staple of this team (besides the bad stuff) that is does really, really well and everyone knows them by? You don’t have to be great at everything to be successful but you do need to be great at 3 things and THAT is your IDENTITY.
I look at this team and see a mixture of players who fit different systems and at the same time I have no idea what system Gottfried is trying to run. It’s like he’s trying to get the highest rated players he can and then force them all to work together. Frankly I find this a failure from top to bottom and everyone is responsible.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterState players wouldn’t know what a box out is if it fell out of the sky, fell on their face, and started to wiggle.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterSeriously do we even practice or do we just use the force?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterPack still on vacation
