1.21 JigawattsKeymaster
Looks like they are back to letting mugging go.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterRick, I don’t anyone has ever said Luckie or Nestor and good ref in the same sentence.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterAmazing how the refs let mugging go in the first 5 and look at someone wrong and your called for a foul in the second 5. Hard to know how to play when the refs are constantly changing.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI’m not saying fire MG after this season, definitely not without a guaranteed proven step up, just looking at trends and asking questions as to why we have those trends, what could possibly be behind those trends, then finally speculating as to how the problem areas could be fixed. Any healthy organization does this type of self analysis yearly if not quarterly and if you don’t then you won’t be an organization for very long.
MG is pretty consistent at producing bubble teams and as such if things don’t improve then that is exactly what State will continue to receive. Just as VaWolf examines teams in relation to the RPI and how that translates into NCAAT appearances we can also take the time to review our teams to look at improvement or decline through the years and within those years.
While we are still only approaching the halfway point of year 4, a goal should be set for the 5 year milestone and if that goal hasn’t been reached then what should happen. Continuing to sneak into the tournament and exiting on the first weekend after year 5 may provide cover by the media but is that enough for NC State?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterCD, I see the high post at times too but there is nothing consistent out on the court. As you pointed out maybe it’s because some of the players can’t play it. Maybe MG doesn’t use it enough? If it’s the former then maybe he (staff) made a mistake in evaluating the players he recruited? Maybe they are great practice players but horrible at implementing during a game?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterIf you take away this year’s current freshmen who appear At This Moment to be all quality players, then we’ve already listed all the “mistakes”. Now there will certainly be debate over players like Barber, Anya, Freeman, Lee, Turner, and Washington but that I think comes down to if some or all of those players are suited for whatever system MG is implementing. To me personally if you watch those players they either don’t fit the same type of system or don’t have the ability to play at this level, either way I consider it mistake, a mistake not on the players behalf but the coaching staff.
This goes back to one of my original points in the comments: what is MG trying to do on the court and does the players he’s selected best fit that system? If we knew the answer to the first part we could probably identify which players are the “mistakes” in his selection process because those players skill sets do not complement each other and fit into a cohesive unit. That’s just my opinion from watching live sporting events and looking at data, nothing more.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterIn this day of instant gratification, parent coaches, entitlement and sissified athletes you can’t stop kids from transferring. You just can’t. Duke loses players, Kentucky loses players, UNC loses players.
Most of those transfers had someone else in their ear. I mean just look at the comments on this board. Anyone who has ever been a volunteer coach thinks they’re Doc Rivers. No wonder these kids don’t know who to listen to.
Which shows how much more importance needs to be placed on recruiting the right players and not making multiple mistakes every year. Transfers happen today and as such you have to be right all the time because even when you make the right call on a player it doesn’t mean you will get to keep them.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterYou’d take Purvis over Lee even though they’re the exact same player?
Yup, Lee has shown he has a low ceiling, at least Purvis has a much higher one and you can get more out of him. Like I said he’s a head case and as such would be a detriment to the team but skill set alone I’d take Purvis over Lee.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI think MG and staff have missed on or made the wrong decision on to many scholarships in their recruiting. Think of all the players that have left and the stop gaps they have tied up with multi year players. This isn’t football where you can miss on a couple every year, you have to be right a lot on who you bring in and then keep them, not enough scholarships to continue to make several mistakes each year.
DeThaey, Harris, Raymond, Lewis, Purvis…..
Is there anyone on our current roster that you would trade for one of those guys?
This is an interesting comparison, btw.
http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/compare?add=desmond-lee&p1=rodney-purvis&p2=2-rodney-purvis
I’d take Purvis over Lee if he wasn’t such a head case.
I’d take Harris over Washington and Freeman in a heartbeat.
Even with just the 1 exchange you made my point, that’s 5 players in 3 years of recruiting that left, though I wouldn’t count De Thaey since that was a transition year and he was Lowe recruit but was Harris as well? I can’t remember. Then you add in Freeman, who we all like but may never truly be ACC capable. Just too many scholarships, too many mistakes on the trail.
I question Anya as well, what system is he best suited for? His weight gain in High School into College shows a lack of maturity and/or work habit that questions will he be able to ever do what is necessary to learn his position. Right now he’s great at shot blocking and taking up space but where does he fit into MG offense?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterwhat flavor of Hubba Bubba we have each season.
The “Herble” would also work for State fans…but he isn’t faring quite as well in the desert. (Though he appears to be eating well.)
That is one man who seems never to learn from his mistakes, if he ever admits he makes any. You’d think he’d have learned by now to change his scheduling philosophy but I guess he’s too busy in his daytight compartment to notice. Honestly I don’t think Herb would have made 4 of his 5 NCAAT appearances at NCSU under the current evaluation process. So in that respect I’d say MG is a step up from even Herbie but getting the same results that Herb did while he was here.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterBest case scenario is hiring a coach who understands it takes both sides and is a quality recruiter and that doesn’t mean going after the highest rated player you can get and trying to get them to fit your system.
Could you expound on which players you feel don’t fit our system?
And what you think those players are missing?
I’d first ask what system are we trying to run? I honestly have yet to identify what we are trying to do out on the court. I’ll admit i don’t know all the different offensive and defensive sets that are out there so I’d appreciate it if someone can explain to me what system MG is running because I’d honestly like to know.
Unless you are an up and down the court fast paced offense I’d assume we’d need big men who can box out on defense, have soft hands that can catch/pass, and relatively high Bball IQ, especially if we are running attempting to implement the High Post Offense. Those are skill sets I don’t think any of State’s bigs have. Abu may be the lone exception but he may be too inexperienced to show it.
I think the twins are a nice fit. I also think we lost a good player in Harris when he transferred to Providence after his freshman year.

1.21 JigawattsKeymasterThere were several times I saw BJ drop into the lane off the pick and roll but was never passed the ball. To me that shows a lack of trust between these players.
There were also numerous times when the lane was wide open for a pick and roll but there was no roll but that’s for another thread.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterA Good Defense is NECESSARY.
What’s the best case scenario? Hire an assistant that can teach it?
Best case scenario is hiring a coach who understands it takes both sides and is a quality recruiter and that doesn’t mean going after the highest rated player you can get and trying to get them to fit your system. Honestly I have no idea what goes on behind closed doors, Gottfried may be doing everything right but is coming up craps most every time but the product on the floor and the results/stats show he’s not getting it done and it’s not changing. Just wash, rinse, repeat. The one thing that remains the same in all 4 years is the coaching staff, if firing Gottfried and with someone who may be better isn’t an option then a shakeup on the staff is necessary.
From all I’ve read, and if someone with real inside knowledge knows differently, then the staff is composed of 2 recruiters and 1 defensive coach who is organized. IF Gottfried is listening to or letting Lutz run the defense then he must be replaced.
I also question the ability of the coaches to identify talent, not rankings, and get the best possible players to fit the system they are trying to implement.
I also question the leadership of the staff. Give the players/team an identity and go with it. I hate Bennett ball but his team has an identity and they do it really freaking well. 2012/13 is the only season I’ve seen the fast paced, high scoring, high offensive efficiency identity work under Gottfried. That season should have been a banner year for him but he apparently couldn’t control egos and thus it was a bust of a season.
Again I have no inside knowledge as to practices or if players like each other or not. Simply put the product on the floor is Sendekian level results without the style of play and continuing to chop wood in Daytight compartments will continue to result in deciding what flavor of Hubba Bubba we have each season.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterUnofficial stats…subject to change
1st Half Stats:
Good offense, Poor defense but decent defensive rebounding. Reduced second chance points, down by 1.
2nd Half Stats:
Poof offense, decent defense but bad defensive rebounding. No second chances for the Pack but plenty for UVA, lost the half by 9.
Final Stats:
Defensive rebounding is very important for this team. That and free throws the big difference in this game even with the tough offensive shooting second half.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterHas BSW taken a shot this half?
If he has he hasn’t scored any of them
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterbad shot after bad shot after bad shot after turnovers after more bad shots.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI know there’s plenty of time but it just feels like the game is over
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterthey like calling that charge tonight
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterThis has now become a must win game for State. The odds it’ll have another chance this good to get a big RPI win as this currently is probably won’t come along again.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterId say this is playing at UVA’s style but no, both teams are just ice cold at shooting this half.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterJigsie…ya got to be frusted. Zeebs calling fouls and ya turn on the coach for not hitting his free throws
Nope, never said that. Might want to go back and read it again.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterNice flop
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI’ve never seen a team so God Awful at shooting free throws as I’ve witnessed in State since MG became coach.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterdecent defensive rebounding but too many easy open shots by UVA, especially 3’s.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterThe refs won’t call a foul on UVA even if they pulled out a club and started beating our players.
See the Calvin “travel” as pictured in pup’s main article.
