I am to the point I want there to be zero reason for Yow to keep Gott.
From a basketball perspective, we’re already there. I’m hopeful that State has the finances to pull off a coaching change with two sets of buyouts (Based on $ info posted above). Also buyouts are rarely lump sum payouts. See “Fowler, Lee”.
But “hopeful” is far short of “certain”. After Hewitt’s disastrous contract, GT had to suck it up for a while after getting rid of Hewitt. I can’t say for sure exactly what State’s financial situation is.
I’ve come to view those in charge of NC State athletics as a corporation with a CEO directed to keep the share holders happy by staying in the black, winning is optional. Do just enough to keep the consumers from screaming for heads to roll and keep the money rolling in. From my view there is no desire to do everything within the rules and grey areas to win. If that view is wrong then they really suck at it because riddle me the last time NC State won a conference championship in Basketball or Football?
If revenue sports are simply put up with for generating revenue and not wins/championships then why should I care?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterIs this the run Gott makes to save his job and hold us in limbo?
Always glad to beat Duke.Dear Lord I hope not but we’re NC State and this is exactly the type of cover the PTB always look for to do nothing.
Was our defense better or did they just miss open threes?
Joe Giglio tweeted: Duke got off 19 uncontested 3s against State and made only 5.
I think it’s fair to say they missed open threes. So no, our defense did not improve.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterOne game does NOT a season make….but we have had two lapses already…
Don’t forget two more in the OOC schedule.
I wouldn’t dismiss the Wins over:
Georgia Southern (2 pts)
Loyola-Illinois (2 pts)
Boston University (4 pts)
Tennessee State (OT – 12 pts)1.21 JigawattsKeymasterFundamentally flawed teams will be exposed every time against Fundamentally sound teams.
Yeah that’s what we did to VT where were you?
I enjoyed watching a talented flawed fundamental team beat up on a team coming off an emotional win over Duke who turns around and play on the road. That’s where I was.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterWe just need more Stahs, that’ll solve the problem.

1.21 JigawattsKeymasterUnless you are a micro-manager of an in game coach (see Sidney Lowe) then 95% of coaching is done prior to games. We can see who did a better job coaching prior to this game.
EXACTLY. I always used to grade coaches on three prongs/roles: as recruiter/salesman, as in-game coach/strategist, and as team preparation/motivator.
And don’t give me that shit “they shouldn’t NEED to be motivated by anybody else.” First, it IS WHAT IT IS. NOT WHAT IT SHOULD BE. Second, if you don’t think a teenage male is the kind of person who needs his energies and emotions properly directed…well, shit. I don’t even know where to start.
I’ll be the first to admit that I personally suck at motivating kids. I just can’t do it. My analytical brain just doesn’t function that way. It comes off forced and kids see right through it. That’s why I have an assistant coach who is great at pumping my teams up. I’m a student of the game and spend my time studying, managing, teaching, and preparing teams before the season and games; but when I need them to take the court or get them fired up at any point I turn it over to him because I recognize my strengths and more importantly my weaknesses.

In game coaching is tweaking things
Agree to a certain extent. During games I don’t tweak but rather I reinforce what we’ve worked on in practices. The majority of what I do during games is keep the kids focus on what’s important and try not to disrupt the symmetry when I have to substitute.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterBeing up front on this I’ve always thought Larranaga has been a great coach, not a great recruiter, and felt he would have been great for us not Gottfried. He’s not a flashy guy and traditionally not a great recruiter (high stars) but he knows how to develop players. Even with his lack of high recruiting success NC State has enough built in advantages when it comes to basketball recruiting that he could have done as well or better recruiting initially as the other coaches in the last 25 years at State.

1.21 JigawattsKeymasterI would agree we’ve seen more, I am not sure we have seen better.
Benchcoaching is not Gott’s strength[/quote]
Fixed that for you Rick 😉

12/29/2016 at 6:11 PM in reply to: Rider?? I Barely Even Know Her!! Game Thread (7:00, ESPN3) #1131781.21 JigawattsKeymasterPersonally I still see the same defensive errors that plagued the team before feasting on crap competition as well as previous years. The good news is the cavity filled cupcake schedule is over and they get to show if improvement is real or Same as it ever was.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterIt’s clear Gottfried either has never heard of the Shell Drill or refuses to teach it. 1-2 passes away = Up the Line, Off the Line. Be in a position to deflect the pass or drop down for help defense and still be able to recover if the pass makes it to your man. When you’re 2 passes away you should be in the lane.
One other thing is we close out on the ball poorly, too many times State either doesn’t close out on the ball aggressively enough or out of position to allow the dribble drive (which there is no help defense because they are finding out what flavor bubble gum their man is chewing).
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterGott is not a good coach.
Defense is poor as usual. Plenty of talent, poor thought process and bad coaching.
McCallum
WHAT?!?!? Noooooooo. Gottfried is the greatest since slice bread. No way could we possibly do better than him. Who else can coach this much talent to play this ugly…consistently.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterState defense = Stand flat footed and reach until you hear a whistle
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterSomeone needs to tell Yow to book their flights on Southwest so they don’t have to get charged extra for carry on. They definitely left their brains in Raleigh.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterSomeone please tell me Illinois was a Final Four team last year if only they had won a game here or there.
They are mighty like Georgia Southern and Loyola-Chicago. Definitely media bias is preventing them from being ranked in the top 10, how else can you explain their games against State?
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterSometimes when you win, you really lose. And sometimes when you lose, you really win. And sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie. And sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterBoth conferences should have to deduct points from their total after this game.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterMr. Hanky approves of this game.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterThe best way to describe State is AAU ball: No defense, Showcase yourself trying to out talent the defender.
1.21 JigawattsKeymasterLooks like this game will be decided based on whether or not Creighton is hitting their 3 balls.
When does a team not shoot the ball well from 3 against State?
Add on to that what unknown player (or one in a slump) will have a career game tonight for Creighton?
1.21 JigawattsKeymaster1.21 JigawattsKeymasterMaybe Gott needs some Just for Men to shake things up?
