We’re a little more than a week into the ’14-’15 season, and after a bit of struggle (or perhaps even some growing pains) against USF the Pack sits at 4-0. There is some quality competition on the horizon as the Pack tries to find it’s groove … next up is typically tough (or usually painful to play) Richmond on Wednesday evening. Should be some fun games ahead.
Taking a look at the rest of the league after the opening week, here are some things that standout:
Miami sits at 5-0, impressing by winning against Florida and then winning the Charleston Classic. In addition to the Florida win, Miami also has blowout victories over Charlotte and MAC contender Akron.
Duke’s youngsters look impressive early, and the Blue Devils also sit at 5-0 after winning the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Duke’s victories include wins over Michigan St., Temple, and Stanford.
Florida State sits at 1-3, with losses including Northeastern at home and an 0-2 trip to the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic where they lost to UMass and lost badly to Providence.
RPI watch: According to CbsSports, Clemson’s RPI sits at 341 after losses to Winthrop and Gardner-Webb, and Virginia Tech’s RPI sits at 297 after a home loss to App State, a team picked to finish last in the Sun Belt. Pick it the **** up, albatrosses.

Looking ahead, there’s plenty of holiday / preseason tournament action to be found on the TV this week in-between (or in lieu of) football.
The Pack has a pre-tryptophan tilt with aforementioned Richmond on Wednesday, followed by a quick post-tryptophan contest vs. Boise State on Friday evening. Both teams are dangerous opponents, and should continue to push the Pack towards getting untracked.
Around the league:
Pitt begins play in the Maui Invitational today, after a fairly bad loss to Hawaii the other night.
Clemson finishes up their play in the Paradise Jam today against LSU. It’d be good for the league for Clemson to notch an upset here.
In a bit of a scheduling quirk, Miami plays at Charlotte on Tuesday evening after just defeating the 49ers in the Charleston Classic on Sunday …
Georgia Tech will take their 3-0 record into the Orlando Classic starting Thursday … their first game will be against old friend Steve Wojciechowski and Marquette.
The Cheats could be tested this week as they begin play Wednesday in the Battle 4 Atlantis. While they’ll be legitimately out of class for a change, they’ll open with Butler. The field is pretty strong, featuring Wisconsin among others.
Please feel free to add whatever you find of interest and enjoy the week everyone!

Do they really need help jumping the rails?
🙂Thanks for the writeup. Good summary and glossary building too:

11/24/2014 at 2:12 PM #62351WufpackerParticipantWould you believe me if I told you that VT had an RPI of 33 prior to their loss to Appy? Or that Wake sat at #12 before their recent skid? The Pack jumped 19 spots after their narrow victory over USF (at that rate, we’ll be a #1 seed before Xmas), while the Bulls jumped from #136 to #81 after the loss.
Time to start chopping wood this week vs #40 Richmond, and #17 Boise. Ah, the joys of early season RPI watching.
11/24/2014 at 2:22 PM #62353WufpackerParticipantForgot to mention that FSU deserves every second of their 1-3 start after wearing the unis they wore yesterday…

Shades of 80’s Phillies.11/24/2014 at 3:50 PM #62365wufpup76KeymasterYeah, admittedly RPI or similar metrics are not worth much this early – I just like to include for conversation/interest.
Good call on the FSU jersey being reminiscent of 80’s Phillies jerseys – dead on.
Future Pack opponent Purdue currently getting worked by K-State in the first round of the Maui Invite. Cats up 20 early in the 2nd half.
11/24/2014 at 6:08 PM #62380wufpup76KeymasterClemson gets the win against LSU, and K-State holds off a Purdue 2nd half rally.
11/26/2014 at 9:20 AM #62459wufpup76KeymasterPitt gets taken down by SDSU in the Maui Invitational, and VT gets beaten soundly by No. Iowa (UNI) in the Cancun Challenge.
Some good games all around today, including The Cheats facing Butler at 12 noon today.
I’ll have a Pack-Richmond preview/game thread up soon.
Enjoy your day everyone, and please be safe if traveling.
11/26/2014 at 2:24 PM #62491wufpup76KeymasterHeh heh – welcome to the loser’s bracket, Chapel Hill 🙂
Despite getting calls (shocker) and some horrid shot selection by Butler after going up by 14 – the CheatHoles can’t capitalize.
Smaller Butler obliterated the Holes on the boards and generally outplayed the Cheats the entire game.
Suck it, Cheaters. 🙂 🙂 🙂
11/26/2014 at 2:39 PM #62494MrPlywoodParticipantPoor Holes were all tuckered out after having to actually attend classes.
11/26/2014 at 5:15 PM #62516TexpackParticipantImagine how stressful it’s going to be for them taking finals for the first time.
11/26/2014 at 6:40 PM #62520MrPlywoodParticipantAndy Katz’ article had a not so subtle dig at the Holes:
“The stats don’t lie. And the mythical nature of the Butler way truly has power.”
I wish he had capitalized “Way” though.
