^totally agree Xphoenix. Martin knocks down that clean 3, totally different ball game.
02/11/2015 at 11:18 PM #73924BassPackerParticipantChop, I honestly believe we wouldn’t be 14-11 either with Bennett. And I don’t think Gott is a worse coach than of the three mentioned. But if you wanna compare Tech, BC and Wake (which in yr 4 bet Manning has Wake more consistent than Gott) then lets compare the talent. Gott has talent, has had talent, more than most of some of the teams ahead of us. But he just don’t seem to know how to coach those players in a way that highlights that talent. Bennett seems to get that. We all know what gonna happen in late game situation, specially coming out of a time out, gonna run a screen for a baseline 3, usually with Turner. Bennett can draw up a play like he did with a screen on Anya for a dunk late. Gott has shown a tendency to be one dimensional with offense with it being mostly fire away boys. If you look back at every game we have lost late its because we settled for the 3. Only game that we went inside and stayed inside was against Duke. And we know how that turned out. So yes I blame Gott, know when its working and when its not. Know when a screen for a three by us is obvious coming by the opposing team. I’m not on the fire Gott band wagon yet but he needs to learn from his mistakes and in year four, I don’t see that happening. Just tired of this same ole Rut-Ball style of play from Gott. Sit Turner when he needs sitting. Sit Lacey when he needs sitting. But realize when its not working…Gott it?
02/11/2015 at 11:34 PM #73925choppack1ParticipantBass – I agree. Its frustrating as hell. Its like watching Charlie liebrandt take the mound in the bottom of the 9th with the world series on the line. But only, where’s gott’s Marquis grissom.
02/11/2015 at 11:53 PM #73926mak4dpakParticipantAnother close loss, and again disappointing. Can’t help but wonder if the BS calls by the refs, are for the benefit of the incompetent Carl Hess. But again like the last 3 or 4 games, Ralston Turner is a no show. Just absolutely pathetic shooting. He better find himself soon, or any chance we have is doomed. But as the announcers on the radio pointed out UVA is a veteran team, and we are made up of a bunch of freshmen and sophmores. I can’t throw Gott under the bus, and truly feel if we had a veteran team like UVA, we would have won the close ones. Still a work in progress. Hope we can pull the upset in Louisville. Yes, probably doubtful, but not impossible, if Turner finds his touch. Our good start heightened our expectations, but this team was not even expected to do as well as it has.
02/12/2015 at 12:08 AM #73927packalum44ParticipantRuminating about which play cost which game is missing the forest for the trees.
Once you have the right coach in place, then you can agonize over the trees.
Yawwnnnn. Same story, different coach, different year, more grey hair, comfortably numb.
02/12/2015 at 4:55 AM #73930GreywolfParticipantLast night my wife told me to “get that silly grin off your face” so I fired up SFN and read about NC State basketball. It worked. The grin is gone and she also told me if I stop reading about that damn Doeren and his recruiting, maybe it will stay gone.
UVA is a veteran team, and we are made up of a bunch of freshmen and sophmores.
When do you suppose Gott found out he had a “team made up of a bunch of sophomores” — opening day of practice?
Something is distracting Gottfried. New day, same sh!t.
02/12/2015 at 5:15 AM #73931WulfpackParticipantUVa played their game and won it down the stretch. Their defense is so good it can carry them when they can’t do anything offensively.
We’re now in a tie for 10th place in the conference. Not our year.
02/12/2015 at 7:07 AM #73937BJD95KeymasterThere was absolutely no basketball-related reason for Nolte to do what he did. It was a dangerous play, plain and simple, that easily could have gotten Twin A/B hurt pretty badly. His arm went out at the last second IN SELF-DEFENSE. Because he NEVER saw Nolte, because there was NO REASON to be looking for someone there.
It was a bush league play, shame on the gullible refs for rewarding it, shame on Gott for not defending his player. If he was on the verge of losing this team before last night…
02/12/2015 at 7:42 AM #73938RickKeymasterIs anyone surprised?
Justified was great. No reason to subject yourself to piss poor play and coaching.
Got has to go. He won’t but it is only delaying the inevitable. He has not grown as a coach or a person since he left Alabama.02/12/2015 at 7:43 AM #73939tractor57ParticipantUnless the refs have a replay view of that flagrant foul situation than I saw on TV I think they missed the call.
02/12/2015 at 7:56 AM #73940choppack1ParticipantBjd – gott just stood there and took it. Did he say anything in the press conference? Has he or yow publicly called out the officials? Until then – expect no changes in the treatment from the zebras.
Mak4pak – you won’t throw gott under the bus but you’ll throw a student attending your alma mater under the bus? Odd who gets a pass and who doesn’t. It doesn’t appear we’ll get the equivalent of the 12-4 conference record gott delivered twice at bama.
02/12/2015 at 8:40 AM #73942WulfpackParticipantGott called the refs out in the presser. It was a bad call (wasn’t really a call since no foul called on the play, but then went to monitor).
02/12/2015 at 9:12 AM #73949CodebrownParticipantWe might not win again this year. Is it football season yet?
02/12/2015 at 9:14 AM #73950TexpackParticipantI couldn’t bring myself to watch last night. Flight delayed almost two hours coming home so the last thing I needed was to get pissed by the inevitable. I saw the halftime score and then the final score. This team is one of those that just figures out a way to lose almost every night out. Some teams are like that.
Fairly or unfairly, next year will be a referendum year on Gott.
02/12/2015 at 9:19 AM #73951BJD95Keymaster^ Completely fair. All his guys, and it’s Year Five.
He’s fortunate to get that, given how badly this season has gone. But he really should get credit for doing some good to very good work the first three seasons. I will be fair. But I am very, VERY worried now.
02/12/2015 at 9:20 AM #73952BJD95KeymasterAlso, the most NC State thing to do would be to beat Colonel Sanders (aka “the Minute Man”), then lose to Buzzy at home.
02/12/2015 at 9:35 AM #73953BJD95KeymasterWatch/listen and feel better. Because I like the Proletariat:
02/12/2015 at 11:02 AM #73960JasonPParticipantTough loss in a season full of them. Never seen a single team have as much hard luck on the court as this year’s Pack. Someone’s got some mighty potent voodoo.
Credit to the players for not giving up, but a trip to the NIT is not a reward or even a consolation. Here’s hoping other teams start sleeping on us and we can string together some unlikely wins – it’s really our only hope at this point.
02/12/2015 at 11:04 AM #73961PackFamilyParticipantI may take heat over this, but i don’t care. I complain about officiating a lot, but the call on Martin was legit. He dropped his shoulder into the kid and it is plainly visible. The kid may have flopped some but there was no reason for Martin to run into him. If the shoe was on the other foot we would be screaming about it.
Now.. i will agree that if the shoe was on the other foot, there would be no call,

I agree with this statement. Kid probably lost the game for us with that move. It gave Virginia just enough spread to survive. And as much as I hate flopping, don’t give them that opportunity!
02/12/2015 at 12:07 PM #73965Fastback68ParticipantWill Henderson be a major upgrade both offensively or defensively over Turner?? Have not heard a thing like I did with Trevor. If I am recruiting for this team, major minutes available is my opening line. BB IQ is at a major low.
02/12/2015 at 12:20 PM #73966ncsu1987ParticipantCan somebody give me the rough timeframe within the game when the flagrant was called? I see multiple interpretations in the comments, and I’d like to see it myself, but I damned sure don’t want to watch the whole thing.
Thanks in advance.
02/12/2015 at 12:38 PM #73968ncsu1987ParticipantAnd on that call, I don’t get Gott’s passivity. I understand that in those situations, you’re still in a position to win the game – a technical foul or two on the bench, with the ensuing free throw attempts, wouldn’t help things, especially against a team like UVa. BUT, given the WF fiasco, and our general inability to get anything called our way for the past few years, that would have been my breaking point. I’m a firm believer in calmness and proper channels, but I would have GOTTen myself tossed.
Don’t know if he’s on a leash, or if, as Grey suggests, he’s distracted by something, or if that kind of display is simply not in his DNA. Or something else.
I stick with our coaches MUCH longer than most, but this bothered me.
02/12/2015 at 12:49 PM #73970Daniel_Simpson_DayParticipantI think the flagrant foul was with between 2 and 3 minutes remaining.
We lost the game because we play undisciplined and took way too many contested shots early in the shot clock. Really curious what the time of possession was last night, but UVA just works the ball around so well trying to get open looks (which they did get, they just couldn’t hit them). Only when they are unable to get an open look and the shot clock is running down do they take contested jump shots.
Is it just me or does Anya just look lost when he’s on the floor. Just standing around acting like he wants to set a pick for someone, but doesn’t know where he should be on the floor. I can remember more than once he would look at one of his teammates, palms turned up with a “where am I supposed to be; what am I supposed to do” look on his face. He also got lost a few times on defense and gave up uncontested shots or layups.

Interesting opinion given the taking point for no recruits is a lack of playing time available.
