North Carolina will open the 2016 football season by playing Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at the Georgia Dome.
The game will be played on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016. Kickoff time and television coverage have not yet been set.
It will be UNC’s first appearance in the Atlanta game since a 30-24 loss to LSU in 2010 — a game marred by the suspension of several key Tar Heels for their roles in the scandal that wound up landing coach Butch Davis’ program on probation.
It will also mark the second straight year in which UNC will begin its season against an SEC opponent. The Tar Heels will play South Carolina in Charlotte in its 2015 opener.
“The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is a wonderful event and an excellent opportunity for our student-athletes to compete on a national stage,” UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said. “It is one of the premier events in college football and Atlanta has always been a popular destination for our fans. It should be an outstanding environment in the Georgia Dome.”
According to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which quotes Peach Bowl president and CEO Gary Stokan, the original plan was to have Florida State play Georgia in the traditional season-opening game in Atlanta. But when the Seminoles decided to play Old Miss at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic turned to the Tar Heels as the Bulldogs’ opponent, instead.
Here’s to hoping we get to watch Carolina get murdered on national TV.
Ha-Ha, 2nd choice. Better have a backup plan for when the ax falls.
Will Fraudora still be the Cheats HC?
Did Bubber say “student-athlete”?
