Spring Training….
While Tobacco Road was concentrating on the Roundball stuff, both on and off the court, last week….
Major League Baseball kicked off Spring Training in Florida and Arizona… and not without some ‘controversy’….
As I understand it, the New Rule is that you can only have six mound visits per inning and on the seventh you “may” get injected from the game…
Now… that’s about the least thought out thing we’ve seen from MLB , perhaps since the designated hitter. While MLB is not known for it’s brilliance, this tops it all….
1. What’s the ‘penalty’ for the pitcher leaving the mound and talking to his infield ? That delays the game too, doesn’t it?
2. Why ‘ejection’? Why not just make the penalty an ‘OUT’?
3. Why ‘may’ get ejected? That makes it a judgement call by the umpire. Just make the charged ‘OUT’ automatic, no questions asked.
4. Why do anything?
Baseball is the only sport without a clock. For years, ‘they’ (the TV Guys ) have wanted to speed the game up. They say “Nobody wants to watch a four hour game”.
They don’t mention that maybe 1% of the games played go beyond 3hrs, which is the average length of a NFL game. I’d suggest that if you don’t/can’t watch a 4 hour game, turn the TV off… or turn it on in the 5th inning.
But the real problem here is that you can’t speed up something without a clock. Moreover, Baseball has never nor will ever be well suited for TV for lots of reasons.
Just let BASEBALL be BASEBALL and leave BASEBALL alone…
We really need ONE THING that doesn’t fit TV….

And in West Rawlee… Coach Doeren and his defending North Carolina State Football Champions take the field this week for Spring Football Training… Offense returns Finley and others and holds promise for another good season. The Defense, for all practical purposes, will need to be rebuilt from front to back…
GO PACK!
Ummmm… don’t look now but the pack9 is 7-1 to start the season and ranked as high as 12. Can pack sports get any better? Yep, if the pack9 can do the same thing to FSU baseball that they did to BB. And take out the tiggers too! GO PACK!
On to Omaha!
