Headed down Interstate 85 on a bitter cold, sunny winter day… a day just like today weatherwise all across North Carolina…
I wish I had 1/2 the gas money I’ve spent over the years making that trip today… Boys… we have us one helluva SFN cookout!!!
Today’s trip to Death Valley by Coach KK & Company, reminded me of the first time I drove by the Clempsom exit on I-85South.
Senior year -Christmas break – 1975. Actually, I had taken extra classes, made the grades and had finished all my classes three weeks earlier so it was celebration party time for real. I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do after graduation, but I knew I was headed down I-85 to….
HotLanta and the Peach Bowl v. West Virginia!!!
As it turned out…. that Peach Bowl was a crossroads…
The young West Virginia Coach, ya’ll know, was Bobby Bowden. The next August, Coach Bowden moved to Tallahassee; I got there for a 18 month stint in the Sig-Ep house and B-school that September.
More importantly, I had convinced that tall girl from Atlanta who was down the street at St. Mary’s — the one I hadn’t dated yet — to give me the New Year’s Eve Hotlanta tour the day after the game… She did not disappoint.
In fact, tomorrow night I’ll be looking at the same smiling face across the dinner table 42 years and 4 kids later….
We made a bunch of trips up and down I-85 over those years, until we finished burying everybody.
Told the kids to roll the windows up in the car everytime we passed that Clempsom exit, so we wouldn’t get that Tigger smell in the car too….GO PACK!!!

Back to the basketball game today….
Needless to say…. December was a ‘little’ disappointing, for more reasons than one… and it’s gonna take us a couple weeks to get our heads and legs right for conference play.
The Tiggers are a good team and we’ll be ‘challenged’ in every way.
I’m advising “Patience”…
